Rutgers basketball: Paul Mulcahy is molding the offense in his image – Asbury Park Press

Watch: Raw highlights from Rutgers basketball practice

Watch: Raw highlights from Rutgers basketball practice

Jerry Carino, Asbury Park Press

PISCATAWAY -- Paul Mulcahy was open in the left corner at the beginning of Rutgers mens basketball practice Friday. The ball quickly worked its way around the perimeter through the air, no dribbles and found him.

Swish.

A few minutes later, he was open in the right corner. Same ball movement, same result: nothing but net.

The casual observer will focus on Mulcahys 3-point stroke. As a freshman, the former Gill St. Bernards star from Bayonne rarely took a shot. As a sophomore he took what defenses gave him and hit a team-high 39% of his triples. Now the junior is looking like a full-fledged sniper, but Mulcahy would rather talk about the passing that led to his open looks.

MORE RU HOOPS: Cliff Omoruyi is working it

I think thats contagious, he said Friday, during the teams media day. Unselfish basketball is contagious. Selfish basketball is contagious. You make the right play, the next guy will make the right play.

No matter how many jumpers he makes, Mulcahy wants the pass-first ethos to be his main imprint on this program. For the Scarlet Knights to return to the NCAA Tournament, thats the roadmap. Last year, there were times when everyone stood around while explosive guard Jacob Young (who is now at Oregon) and others drove headlong at the bucket. Judging from early glimpses of this group, those days are over.

I try to make the right play, and I think a lot of guys are buying into that, Mulcahy said. A lot of guys have learned from last year. Its a fun way to play, its the right way and it works.

For the first time, hes preaching that to the team.

In the past I deferred, but Ive matured a lot, he said.

Its been cool to see his evolution, backcourt mate Geo Baker said. Ive told him, Listen, you know the game better than some of these guys, you have to use your voice. I think we have the right group where he can really excel. We have veterans who are willing to listen and we have younger guys who are willing to listen and learn.

So is Mulcahy. He gets together with newly elevated assistant coach T.J. Thompson two or three times a week to break down film.

T.J. helped me a ton this offseason, he said.

Thompson was a standout point guard at George Washington from 2001-2005, playing under current Rutgers coaches Steve Pikiell and Karl Hobbs.

Pauls been phenomenal, from the way hes improved his jump shot to the way hes leading the team and being more vocal, Thompson said. Im so proud of his growth.

Mulcahy, who stands 6-foot-6, averaged 5.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27 minutes per game last season. He did much of that with a mangled pinky on his shooting hand.

I got surgery, so Im still trying to come back from that, he said, adding that hes undergoing daily treatment with athletic trainer Richard Campbell. Its better than it was; now its about strengthening it.

Although Pikiell calls Mulcahy a point guard, hell split ball-handling duties with Baker, and there will be times when fellow upperclassmen Ron Harper Jr. and Caleb McConnell initiate the offense as well.

The way weve been playing, we dont really have a set point guard, Baker said. I think well be really sharing the game.

So far, in practice at least, its happening.

This team truly shares the basketball, Pikiell said. That starts with Paul, and it starts with Geo, too.

RELATED: Rutgers nearing naming-rights deal for the RAC

Pikiell added two players from the transfer portal, LSU wing Aundre Hyatt and San Jose State center Ralph Agee, and on Friday Pikiell shed some light into thatprocess.

A lot of teams want to stockpile whatever they can in terms of talent five-star, six-star, eight-star guys, he said. Im trying to find guys who are going to fill in the needs we have and fit in with the personality of the team.

In some calls Pikiellmade to transfering players, their first commentwas, How many shots can I get? or Ive got to play this position or Ive got to start.

That was a red flag for a coach with five key players returning.

Aundre and Ralph both said, Well compete, Pikiell said.

Thats exactly what he wanted to hear.

RELATED: Rutgers embraces 'disrespect' of Big Ten media poll

The freshman guard continues to show thedefensive chops that will earn him minutes. He locked up Baker on a few sequences Friday and held his own no matter who he was matched up against.

In one telling half-court set, he dropped down to double Cliff Omoruyi after the big man received a deft pass from Mulcahy on the low block and would up slapping the ball out of bounds.

Pikiell said Miller and sophomore wing Mawot Mag have been his most consistentdefenders throughout the preseason.

After shooting the lights out at a recent practice observed by media members, Rutgers was not nearly as hot this time around. The Scarlet Knights struggled from the free-throw line Friday and did a bunch of extra wind sprints because of it.

Worth noting: Omoruyi led the teams sprints nearly every time. Thats highly unusual for a center.

Pikiell said it privately in recent weeks, and Friday he went public: McConnell has graded out as the programs most efficient player throughout the preseason based on the teams internal metrics.

While McConnell got denieda seat forthe television interviewduring Big Ten media day the Big Ten Networks setup in Indianapolis only allowed for two players to join the broadcasters (they wanted Baker and Harper, understandably) his contributions will be vital as the Scarlet Knights top defender andjunkyard dog.

Pikiell announced that the season opener vs. Lehigh Nov. 10 has sold out, going off the board along with Michigan (Jan. 4) and Michigan State (Feb. 5). There will be more.

I go to the store now and people want to know (how many tickets are left), Pikiell said. I just tell them, youve got to call.

That was unimaginable when Pikiell took the job in 2016 not just the sellouts, but people recognizing him in stores.

Times have changed.

What are the best treatments for atopic dermatitis in different areas? – Medical News Today

Posted: at 4:49 pm

Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory condition that can cause itchy and irritated skin. The condition tends to develop in early childhood but may occur at any age. It can appear anywhere on the skin but most often affects the hands, insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, and the face and scalp.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common type of eczema, which refers to a group of noncontagious skin conditions that cause the skin to become itchy, inflamed, or have a rash-like appearance.

A 2019 study notes that in the United States, it appears in roughly 1113% of children and 78% of adults.

AD can develop on any area of skin at any age; however, it tends to appear in specific places according to a persons age. For example, in infants, AD is more likely to occur on the face; for young children, it often develops on the insides of the elbows, and many adults may experience AD on the hands.

This article discusses common areas where atopic dermatitis may occur and which treatments may be beneficial.

Learn more about the different types of eczema here.

AD is the most common form of eczema, and it typically involves the face. Infants and young children with AD often present with dry, itchy, and irritated skin on their faces. This can also include the neck, scalp, and eyelids. Facial AD can also occur regularly in teens and adults experiencing a flare of AD.

Many treatments for AD are topical creams that help to retain moisture and reduce symptoms of AD. However, doctors may recommend weaker dosages when treating AD on the face to prevent side effects due to the skin being much thinner on the face. They may also suggest other options, such as topical calcineurin inhibitors, which are gentler on sensitive skin.

Learn more about creams for eczema here.

AD commonly appears on the limbs, particularly at the flexures, or skin creases, of the elbows and knees. This is why many people may describe AD as having a flexural distribution, as these skin folds may rub against each other during movements, such as walking, which may exacerbate symptoms.

It is also common for people to experience AD on the hands and wrists. Approximately 5060% of people with active AD may experience AD on the hands. However, it has a higher prevalence with increasing age.

AD also develops on the lower legs, ankles, and feet.

Treatments for AD on the limbs include:

Treatment also aims to prevent potential triggers. This may include avoiding potential irritants, such as soaps and fragrances, minimizing exposure to chemicals, and wearing gloves at work and home.

The National Eczema Association suggests applying wet wraps to the limbs. This involves wrapping the skin in wet gauze to help retain moisture.

Learn more about phototherapy and AD here.

Some people experience AD on their torso, chest, and stomach. Typically, doctors will prescribe the same treatments as they would for AD on other parts of the body and include oral and topical medications, moisturizers, or phototherapy.

Some people may require assistance when applying topical medications to their back.

Taking lukewarm baths may be a useful home remedy for people with AD in these areas as they can comfortably submerge these areas in soothing water.

Click here to learn more about natural remedies for eczema.

There is currently still some uncertainty about the exact cause of AD. However, growing evidence indicates that genetics, the immune system, and the environment play a role. It is likely that these factors interact and lead to the leakiness of the skin barrier, which results in dryness and causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed.

Research suggests that several genes may be involved in the development of AD. A 2021 article also notes that if one parent has AD, their offspring will have more than a 50% chance of developing symptoms. If both parents have AD, this risk can increase to 80%.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases adds that approximately 30% of children with AD have food allergies, and many develop asthma.

Evidence also highlights a link between allergies triggering the immune system and eczema. Experts may refer to this progression of allergic conditions as the atopic march.

It usually starts with AD and food allergies in infancy, developing into allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis in childhood.

Many potential triggers within the environment may exacerbate symptoms of AD. Exposure to various factors, including pollutants, such as tobacco smoke, climate factors, such as temperature, and social factors, such as stress, may contribute to the development of AD.

Learn more about what triggers AD here.

Due to problems with the leakiness of the skin barrier and bacteria on the skin, people with AD are more vulnerable to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. In particular, common infections include those from the herpes simplex 1 virus and staphylococcus bacteria, which can cause pus-filled bumps, cold sores, and fever blisters.

Living with eczema can also adversely affect a persons mental health individuals may worry about their appearance or experience bullying or discrimination. Flare ups may also have links to other issues in some cases, such as:

Learn more about the potential complications of AD here.

Anyone uncertain about their symptoms or their childs symptoms should see a doctor. Even with a previous AD diagnosis, if a person notices that symptoms get worse or flare ups seem more regular, it is advisable to talk with a doctor.

Doctors may help identify triggers by ordering allergy tests and can help suggest over-the-counter or prescription drugs to control flare ups.

Additionally, anyone noticing signs of, or suspects a skin infection, should see their doctor.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that may cause itchy, irritated, and inflamed skin. It can occur anywhere on the body, but certain areas may be more common depending on a persons age. Areas prone to developing atopic dermatitis include the face, hands, and backs of the elbows and knees.

Treatments may vary slightly but typically include oral and topical medications, moisturizers, phototherapy, and home remedies.

It is also advisable for people to avoid exposure to any known triggers. Anyone uncertain about their symptoms or having trouble identifying triggers should contact their doctor.

New campaign sheds light on disparity in health care for Black skin with focus on eczema – Yahoo News

Posted: at 4:49 pm

October is Eczema Awareness Month, and skin care brand Aveeno has launched an initiative bringing attention to Black skin health care inequity.

"Eczema is the second-most common skin disease impacting African Americans," according to Skin of Color Society. Aveeno's new #SkinVisibility campaign focuses on the under-diagnosis, care and treatment of eczema among Black and brown people.

The campaign features those with eczema including actress Tia Mowry and a number of skin health advocates and dermatologists.

PHOTO: Aveeno is shedding light on Black skin health inequities through its #SkinVisibility campaign. (CreativeSoul Photography)

"Black skin health has long gone underreported, undiagnosed and unseen by the masses," said Mowry in a statement. "As a result, my self-confidence was tested when I first began to suffer with eczema, with little information to turn to.

She continued: "Thats why I am thrilled to be partnering with Aveeno to drive visibility to eczema and diagnosis on Black skin, so that others who may be struggling can finally find relief."

A 2018 study discovered that less than 5% of general medicine textbook images show conditions on darker skin. This shortcoming has left doctors with difficulties in recognizing and properly diagnosing conditions such as eczema on deeper skin tones.

National Eczema Association describes eczema as the name for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become itchy, inflamed or have a rash-like appearance.

On lighter skin, the disease usually shows up as a red, dry, itchy rash while on darker skin it can appear as a dark-brown, purple or ashen grey rash.

Aveeno's #SkinVisibility campaign features an "Eczema in Skin of Color" digital hub which the company says serves as a dedicated one-stop-shop for people of color. It includes a quiz to help potential suffers identify telltale symptoms of eczema in addition to community feedback driven by personal testimonials.

The company also said its campaign features virtual talks and community events focusing on topics such as "Closing the Gap on Black Skin Health Disparity and "What it Means to be an Eczema Warrior, with entrepreneurs, educators and advocates. "

In addition to being one of the most frequent skin diseases in African Americans, eczema is also one of the most common skin disorders seen in infants and children according to Skin of Color Society, which is why Aveeno said it is also showcasing an "Eczema Equality" photo shoot. The series of photos tell the individual stories of Black parents struggling to manage their children's eczema.

"The journey to skin health equity for the Black population is far from over," said Aveeno senior director, Suzanne Goldstein. "That's why at Aveeno, we are committed to doing our part to help close the educational gap to Black skin health resources and tools for diagnosis. Using our platform and the launch of our #SkinVisibility campaign, we will continue to elevate important conversations around skin of color."

After two weeks without contact with missions to Mars, NASA hopes to return to normal in the next few days: – The Press Stories

Posted: at 4:47 pm

It sounds like the plot of a horror movie in space. A few days ago, Mars was called the solar link. That is, at that moment when the red planet behind the sun is hidden from us. This happens almost every two years and for a few days, the interactions between the Earth and the gadgets on the Earths surface. Are interrupted. We have been in black for two weeks.

The question is, what will we find out when we return? In addition to the disruptions and delays caused by this, NASA expects distorted commands and unpredictable behavior from three orbits, two rovers, a lander and a helicopter. But Explore this event in detail now as we have more and more things It can tell us many things about what we can expect from future trips to the planet.

Darkness affects all companies traveling on Mars, But NASA is Described your plan in these two weeks. Also, to try to get the most out of it, he plans some tasks that devices can do without Earth monitoring and control.

Although Tuesday, October 7, was hidden behind the sun, the communication shutdown began five days earlier, on the 2nd. And while some tools and equipment appear to take another two or three days to recover, it will last until the 16th. As I say, this is a relatively common one. But that is the truth As we have more and more things on the neighboring planet, the problems caused by these two years of resistance are increasing the weight.. And they will earn more.

Especially if we are not able to build an autonomous infrastructure on Mars. It may be One of the best strategic discussions on planet exploration (and colonization): The tension between the need to create a technological node powerful enough to gain autonomy from the earth and the cost (social, economic and political) of this infrastructure.

For now, engineers from all the aerospace companies on Mars are waiting Learn about how this two week silence affects our plans. It is not small.

Internet on the Moon? How NASA Artemis Mission Will Make Lunar Connectivity Possible – iTech Post

Posted: at 4:47 pm

Astronauts and space tourists are seen to have ready Internet access once they land on the moon.

NASA has created an Internet network on the Moon specifically dedicated to its Artemis missions, which need a dependable communications network for their challenging space tasks. LunaNet is set to address delays and disruptions in data transfers in space, NASAannounced in a post.

Present space missions rely on previously scheduled links with ground-based antennas or space satellites. As such, this limits efficient data transfer and communications. With LunaNet, sustainable communications, weather monitoring, and navigation can be attained, as well as provide dependable Internet connections for scientific use.

Similar to the Earth-based Internet, the LunaNet lets users connect to a larger network that consists of nodes, part of which are located in space. LunaNet, which is a Delay-Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN), utilizes several nodes on the Moon, on satellites, and ground stations, thus creating a strong, reliable network. These nodes are capable to store and re-route data to discover the best, ideal path to reach destinations, Screen Rantreported.

Read Also: NASA Space Construction: ISS Tests Regolith 3D Printer for Artemis Lunar Program; Is This the Start of Space Colonization?

As such, astronauts, space tourists, and equipment, such as Moon rovers, need not wait for the routing and processing data emanating from ground stations. This means users can actually access the network wherever they are, even as they hop, skip and walk on the lunar surface. While on the Moon, astronauts, other users, and rovers will be able to determine their location, plan routes, allow autonomous travel, and set safe, quick returns to base.

In addition, astronauts will also access real-time space weather information. With LunaNet, these astronauts could get an alert to seek cover once dangerous solar storm activity happens. This network shall also help in search and rescue operations, astronomical observations, and scientific experiments. According to NASA, LunaNet will be used to research on advanced space communications for future missions, and eventually achieve a "Solar System Internet."

On Earth, LunaNet will offer nodes the chance to help researchers on the ground perform measurements using radio and infrared communications links. This network will also provide opportunities for Moon observations, such as measuring and studying the lunar environment. It will also allow global or regional analysis of the natural satellite, giving scientists access to such lunar data over expansive spatial scales.

The Artemis program is NASA's immediate, most significant current space mission. However, Artemis II has since been delayed due to a lawsuit filed by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin against NASA over lunar landing module project awarded to rival SpaceX.

Artemis I is scheduled to launch in November, bringing an uncrewed Orion spacecraft to the Moon. The next Artemis missions will send the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface. The base camp of Artemis is located at the south pole of the Moon and is deemed the stepping stone to exploring Mars and beyond.

Candidate Suggests Lowering Sea Levels by Taking "All the Boats Out of the Water" – Futurism

Posted: October 15, 2021 at 9:16 pm

Why didn't we think of that?Eureka!

Scott Pio, a Republican candidate for Virginias state legislature who wants to ban abortions and eradicate gun control regulations, may have come up with a solution for climate change thats so brilliant that the rest of us literally cant understand it.

What if, Pio speculated on Twitter, we simply got rid of all the boats?

Im curious, Pio wrote in a since-deleted tweet that was graciously archived by Raw Story, Do you think the sea level would lower, if we just took all the boats out of the water? Just a thought, not a statement.

To be fair, its unlikely that Pio was actually trying to solve climate change. Besides, if theres one thing that this years trade-halting saga in the Suez Canal taught the world, its that we no longer have any use for boats and that we might as well get rid of them altogether. Right?

But lets indulge the idea anyway. Thankfully, as Raw Story noted, XKCD comic creator Randall Munroe recently tried to figure out how much of a difference it would make on global sea levels if every boat were plucked out of the water. Keep in mind: The oceans are unfathomably huge and, on the scale of planets, even the most enormous shipping vessels are minuscule.

The answer? A whopping six microns, according to Munroes calculations, which is just about the thickness of a single strand of spider silk. Were saved!

Or maybe not: As Munroe added, the current rate of sea level rise would undo all of that progress in a matter of just 16 hours. Maybe we should leave the boats where they are and invest in wind power instead.

Chinese Authorities Are Testing Thousands of Blood Samples From Wuhan – Futurism

Posted: at 9:16 pm

In coming weeks, Chinese authorities say they plan to run tests on thousands and thousands of blood samples from Wuhan, the original epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are up to 200,000 blood samples stored at the Wuhan Blood Center dating back to 2019, potentially giving officials access to a sort of real-time historical archive that could help reveal how the first coronavirus outbreaks began and spread, officials at Chinas National Health Commission told CNN. The samples, which were previously identified as potentially being crucial evidence by the World Health Organizations probe into China, have not yet been tested or examined.

Why the wait? Chinese authorities say that they were waiting for the end of a two-year grace period during which the blood samples could have become evidence in any lawsuits related to their donors or the donations themselves, according to CNN. Now that were almost at the two-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 cases, officials have started to prepare for the tests so that they can start as soon as possible.

This provides the closest in the world weve seen of real-time samples to help us understand the timing of the outbreak event, Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow for global health Yanzhong Huang told CNN.

If researchers are lucky, the blood samples will show when antibodies against the coronavirus first started to appear, which would serve as a proxy for when and where the pandemic began. But the biggest question, unfortunately, is whether Chinese authorities will handle the research with their usual level of secrecy or if transparent reports will make it to the outside world.

The blood absolutely will contain vital clues, Columbia University epidemiologist Maureen Miller told CNN, but that wont make a difference if no one else gets to access them.

No one will believe any results that China reports unless there are qualified observers at the very least, she added.

New Treatment Eradicated Tumors in Terminally Ill Cancer Patients – Futurism

Posted: at 9:16 pm

A team of scientists at Londons Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has tested a new drug cocktail that they say has eradicated previously untreatable tumors in some terminally ill head and neck cancer patients.

Giving patients two immunotherapy drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, seemed to shrink tumors in patients with advanced stages of cancer, The Guardian reports. Some of the patients walked away virtually cancer-free, and the study participants typically survived three months longer than those who were treated with more conventional chemotherapy, hinting at the prospect of cancer treatments that could save or at least help people who would today be out of options.

When I was told about the trial, I didnt hesitate to join what did I have to lose? one study participant named Barry Ambrose, who had previously been told that his throat cancer was incurable because it had spread to his lungs, told The Guardian. It turned out to be a lifeline.

The new treatment completely cleared the cancer from his throat after eight weeks, and subsequent chemotherapy and surgery got the cancer out of his lungs as well.

Although I had to make biweekly trips from Suffolk to the hospital for the treatment, I had virtually no side-effects and was able to carry on as normal doing the things I love: sailing, cycling, and spending time with my family, Ambrose added.

However, the drug cocktails fate as a future clinical treatment is hazy, at best. The phase III clinical trial failed to achieve statistical significance across all patients. Thats the go-to measurement clinical scientists use to determine whether or not the treatment actually had an effect or if any supposed benefits happened by pure chance.

Failing to reach that benchmark means researchers cant be sure that it was actually the new drug cocktail that eradicated those tumors. But calculations of that sort are less important to the patients, several of whom told The Guardian that the treatment gave them a new lease on life.

Despite the lack of statistical significance, these results are clinically meaningful, ICR professor of biological cancer therapies Kevin Harrington, the oncologist who led the research trial, told The Guardian. We will need to do longer follow-up to see whether we can demonstrate a survival benefit across all patients in the trial.
