Michigan GOP Official Hosted Podcast With White Nationalist – The Daily Beast

Posted: November 17, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Years before he helped purge his local elections board, Michigan GOP official Shane Trejo hosted a podcast called Blood Soil and Liberty with a member of a white supremacist group.

Shane Trejo, chair of Michigans 11th District Republican Committee, made headlines earlier this year when he encouraged the ouster of a fellow Republican who had voted to certify President Joe Bidens election. You should quit all your GOP posts and never show your face at an event ever again, Trejo texted the Republican elections official, whom he and other Republicans later blocked from re-nomination for office. Previously in 2020, Trejo had spread election-fraud conspiracy theories as a writer for the far-right site Big League Politics.

But Big League Politics wasnt even Trejos most extreme venture on the far right. The local Republican chair used to host a podcast with a member of the white supremacist group Identity Evropa. The co-host, Alex Witoslawski, was recorded on an Identity Evropa leadership webinar giving fascists advice on how to make themselves appealing to mainstream conservatives.

Trejo did not return The Daily Beasts request for comment. His participation in the Blood Soil and Liberty podcast was previously flagged in 2019 by Gizmodo reporter Tom McKay, who noted that the podcast was racist even by the standards of Big League Politics, where Trejo works.

The podcast ran for 15 episodes starting in 2017, and appears to have been yanked from the internet by its creators the following year. Some podcasting sites still host its episode titles and descriptions remain online.

Libertarian nationalist podcasters Shane Trejo - a states rights activist in the patriot movement for many years - and Alex Witoslawski - former conservative political operative turned American Renaissance writer - discuss current events from a consistently uncucked perspective, the podcast description reads. Common targets of derision include commie trash, losertarians, cuckservatives, thots, tokens, welfare migrants, and the French. (American Renaissance is a white supremacist website. Tokens refers to people deemed to be token members of a minority group.)

Episode titles include Its OK To Be White, Right And Christian, Roy Moore Dindu Nuffin, The Paul Nehlen Pill, and Tanner Flake For Fuhrer.

The titles are a time capsule of racist slogans from 2017. Its OK to be white was a meme associated with an alt-right trolling campaign around the time of the podcasts. Dindu nuffin is another alt-right meme denigrating Black people, while Roy Moore was a Republican Senate nominee accused of sexual misconduct against minor girls. Paul Nehlen was a white supremacist congressional candidate who promoted terror tactics online. Tanner Flake is an ex-senators son who was caught using the screen name that included a racial slur and referenced killing Black people.

Witoslawski repeatedly called for a white ethnostate with an immigration system that virtually excludes non-European immigrants.

Although the audio from the podcasts is no longer available, Trejo and Witoslawski appear to have spoken favorably about white supremacists, describing Nehlen as the first alt-right candidate for public office. (The podcasts website uses the term alt-right favorably, including in an essay in which Witoslawski describes himself as a member of the movement.)

The podcast didnt try hard to obscure its political leanings.

Blood and soil is a Nazi slogan used in Germany to evoke the idea of a pure Aryan race and the territory it wanted to conquer, according to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Since then, it has been adopted by neo-Nazis; the white supremacists who marched on Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 famously chanted the slogan the night before one of them murdered a woman with his car.

The Blood Soil and Liberty podcast launched soon after that deadly rally. The podcasts website, which hosted self-proclaimed alt-right blogs, was registered just four days after the car attack, during a tumultuous moment for the alt-right. But instead of disavow the racist movement, as some on the right did, Blood Soil and Liberty came to the defense of the alt-right and groups that had marched in Charlottesville.

In an essay on the podcasts website, Trejos cohost Witoslawski answered questions about the movement from my own alt-right or blood and soil libertarian perspective. In that essay, Witoslawski repeatedly called for a white ethnostate with an immigration system that virtually excludes non-European immigrants. Most Jews and members of Black Lives Matter should be encouraged through government policy to leave the country and resettle in their own ethnostates, Witoslawski wrote on the podcasts website.

Other articles on the site include a blog post defending white supremacist Christopher Cantwell, an essay by Ray Adolfson who describes going to a white lives matter rally in November 2017, where multiple prominent Charlottesville marchers were in attendance.

I had the chance to meet and speak with members from all of the groups that attended the rally including the Traditionalist Workers Party, Vanguard America, the National Socialist Movement, Identity Europa, Atomwaffen, and others, Adolfson wrote. (An overtly pro-terror organization, Atomwaffens small membership was connected to five deaths in just eight months beginning in 2017.)

Another essay on the site, by Identity Evropa member James Allsup, was a defense of the alt-right in the days after the deadly Charlottesville rally, which Allsup had attended. Allsups essay was previously published on the website The Liberty Conservative, where Trejo was a news editor. When The Liberty Conservative removed Allsups article, citing pressure from Googles advertising platform, Trejo penned a blog post defending Allsup, whose article he claimed contained no offensive content (it was merely distinguishing the many differences between the alt-right and literal Nazis).

For some on the alt-right, especially in Identity Evropa, Allsup was a prototype for infiltrating more mainstream Republican institutions. In 2018, The Daily Beast first reported, Allsup ran uncontested for a local Republican role in Washington. He soon bragged about his appointment on an Identity Evropa podcast.

Blood Soil and Liberty came to the defense of the alt-right and groups that had marched in Charlottesville.

You have a seat at the table, Allsup said of winning Republican offices. And thats the most important thing, getting that seat at the table, and you can get that seat at the table by, yes, showing up, yes, by bringing people in, and again this doesnt necessarily only have to be IE members.

Allsups local Republican committee later ejected him. Nevertheless, the far right continued to cite his political career as one to emulate. We cant all be Andrew Anglin, a racist podcaster noted in 2018, namedropping a particularly noxious neo-Nazi, but 10,000 of us can be James Allsup.

In a separate podcast appearance with Identity Evropa leader Patrick Casey, Witoslawski described tactics for making the group seem more palatable to a broader swath of Republicans. Leaked Identity Evropa chat logs show Witoslawski giving the same advice, in more candid terms, telling members to effectively avoid questions about the groups true motives.

The moment you say Were not Nazis [] thats going to be the topic of the media report, it's going to be whether or not were Nazis. And that is not a conversation we want to have, Witoslawski said, according to chats published by the outlet Unicorn Riot. We want to have a conversation about our issues and our topics, not whether or not were National Socialists, right?

(In a currently ongoing civil trial against participants in the Charlottesville rally, a former Identity Evropa organizer testified that members of the group embraced neo-Nazi language, using the slogan did you see Kyle? and a discrete Nazi salute as a way of announcing sieg heil in public.)

Trejo, who has authored articles in defense of Allsup on multiple websites, has found his own path to politics.

In a now-deleted Big League Politics post shortly before the 2020 election, Trejo shared audio from inside a training session for elections officials. Trejo claimed the clip showed officials practicing to flip votes and destroy ballots. The audio demonstrated nothing of the sort, the Detroit Free Press reported at the time. Still, Trejos deleted article was cited by election fraud conspiracy theorists as Biden appeared poised to win Michigan. When a Republican elections canvasser certified Bidens victory last November, Trejo texted her to quit her GOP posts and never appear at another public event.

By February, Trejo was named chair of Michigans 11th Congressional District Republican Committeea role that gave him partial control over the districts elections canvassers. The Republican canvasser who had certified Bidens election found herself blocked from re-nomination to the post, she told The Daily Beast last month.

Instead, Trejo and peers selected a new Republican canvasser, who told the Detroit Free Press that he would not have certified Bidens victory.

I believe they were inaccurate, the new canvasser told the Free Press of Michigans votes, adding that he had heard rumors about the vote from other people. I dont know, I wasnt there, you know? Its hard to second-guess that kind of stuff until youre there, thats one reason I wanted to be on the committee.

Anti-Vaxxers Try to Undo COVID-19 Vaccination Shots After Getting Them – Esquire

Posted: at 12:55 pm

Perhaps Im just grumpy because the week is ending with a fairly substantial noreaster and something unidentifiable blew past my window. But I am coming to the inescapable conclusion that we are all too stupid to live. From NBC News:

So people have gone from a mindless war on the vaccine all the way to a war on themselves for having been vaccinated. It is, of course, futile. Once youre vaccinated, youve been made as safe from COVID as it is possible to be. Theres nothing you can do to make yourself vulnerable again, and I cannot believe I just wrote that sentence.

The entire universe of Quackery has been engaged.

And leading the way is a noted Doctor of TikTok.

In one way, if we have to have a portion of the population that is crazy about vaccine, this is infinitely preferable to anti-vax people. At least these ideas involve people who are vaccinated and who will remain safe from the virus whether they like it or not. But, seriously people, dont wash with Borax. You are not a pair of jeans.

Theres a new tool that can help with your kids eczema – todaysparent.com

Posted: at 12:50 pm

Probiotics are a new way to help heal eczema from the inside out.

Created for

Great news for Canadian parents who have children that suffer from eczema (aka atopic dermatitis). New research shows that doctors, pharmacists and families now have an additional treatment tool to consider for kids with moderate to severe eczema: probiotics.

Probiotics are a safe and effective way to help heal the irritated, itchy skin of atopic dermatitis. Probiotics are the good bacteria that naturally live in and on our bodies. Together with other live microorganisms, they form a microbiome. You may be familiar with probiotics already. Maybe youve heard about the friendly bacteria in yogurt, or bought some capsules when a stomach flu swept through your house. It can seem a little innovative to think a probiotic powder can dramatically affect the skin, but it makes sense once you know how it works.

So, how does it work?

It starts with the microbiome, which is unique to each person. When balanced, the microbiome works to help your body function smoothly.

When researchers studied kids with atopic dermatitis, they noticed that there was an imbalance in the microbiome of these kids, compared to kids who didnt have atopic dermatitis, explains Dr. Kevin Lee, a paediatrician in Markham, Ontario. The probiotics work by restoring balance to the gut microbiome, which ultimately results in influencing the immune response that occurs in eczema or atopic dermatitis. How does the microbiome get disrupted in the first place? Its most likely due to a combination of factors, including your birth environment (more microorganisms pass from mom to baby during a vaginal birth compared to a C-section for example) and the genetic makeup of the child, says Dr. Lee.

There are many different strains of probiotics available, with many different purposes. Some, for example, are used to treat colic in infants, says Dr. Lee. The probiotic strains that have been studied and found to successfully treat atopic dermatitis are Bifidobacterium lactis CECT 8145 (which features antioxidant properties), Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 (which features anti-inflammatory properties) and Lactobacillus casei CECT 9104 (which also features antioxidant properties and promotes microbiome diversity in the gut). Theyre found in a product called ProZema, a small amount of flavourless powder that you mix once a day into food or liquids, for three months. Supported by research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology (JAMA Dermatology), ProZema is clinically proven to reduce the symptoms of eczema and atopic dermatitis.

Results show that after 12 weeks, 96% of patients have improved SCORAD results (the system that doctors use to evaluate the severity of eczema). They also had a better, balanced and more diverse microbiome status, and 91% of patients had cleared or almost cleared their symptoms. The clinical study also showed that there was no need for corticosteroids after six weeks of treatment.

Side effects are both mild and rare, says Dr. Lee, but can include bloating, constipation and/or gas. ProZema is gluten-free and lactose-free, doesnt contain any sugars or major allergens and can be used by kids ages four and up. It shouldnt be used in hot foods, which would destroy the live probiotics. If your child is immunocompromised or taking antibiotics, check with your doctor before using probiotics.

The standard treatments for eczema include topical steroids, antihistamines and calcineurin inhibitors. These do have side effects, so being able to cut down on using them is considered a bonus by many. As physicians, we are concerned about the overuse of the topical steroids because it can cause skin atrophy and that leads to skin discolouration, says Dr. Lee. Taking antihistamines for a long period of time can cause a tolerance for the medication to build up, requiring a higher dose. He adds, Its been very frustrating to treat eczema, as many parents will tell you. Nothing seems to work for some of these childrentheres always these recurrences of the eczema. And so we as doctors are always looking for something thats a little bit better, for something that can help their kids through this.

When your child is taking ProZema, its important to continue using the other treatments that your doctor has prescribed, says Dr. Lee. However, over time, he says, you will likely be able to cut back on the other medications your doctor has recommended. So if youre using, say, a topical corticosteroid, youll notice that you may be using less of it, and you may be using it less frequently. The eczema starts to settle down, and youre finding that the flareups are much, much, much less.

For more information on ProZema and whether it might be right for your child, visit their website.

The Best Bar Soaps for Every Skin Type – gearpatrol.com

Posted: at 12:50 pm

A humble bar of soap is perhaps the most important tool in your grooming regimen. Though often overlooked, soaps come in a staggering array of compositions, and packaging often touts a laundry-list of ingredients. Understanding the best soap to buy starts, first and foremost, by considering your skin type and analyzing the components of a soap to see what will suit your needs.

In technical terms, soap is a salt of a fatty acid. When vegetable or animal fats (triglycerides) are combined with an alkaline solution (e.g. lye), the triglycerides hydrolyze into soap. It seems complex, but soap production dates back thousands of years. The early processes for making soap combined boiled fats with ashes. Soap making became more complex as civilizations grew, and by the middle of the 15th-century, soap making was semi-industrialized in France. The post-Industrialization 19th-century saw the growth of the soap industry, but the next major innovation happened in 1916 when Germany developed synthetic detergents as a response to the shortage of fats due to the first World War. By the 1930s, Procter and Gamble developed a process that decreased soap production times to under a day, effectively cutting weeks from the process.

The industrialization of soap created the hard bars you now find at any big-box store or motel. Truth is, many of these conventional soaps are very harsh; theyre very alkaline and contain preservatives, artificial colors and synthetic fragrances that irritate the skin. Fortunately, there is now a wide range of soaps formulated to clean without irritating. While the processes and ingredients differ widely, the result is the same: a solid cleanser youll actually enjoy using every day.

You know how toothpastes from abroad always seem so much cooler? The same can be said for bar soaps, and especially this one from Tangent, a French apothecary brand. It's organic, all-natural and scented with a complex fir fragrance.

‘I’m a Dermatologist and These Are the Only Foundations You Should Use if You Have Psoriasis’ – msnNOW

Posted: at 12:50 pm

Photo: W+G Creative Editorial-Best Foundations for Psoriasis-beauty

Choosing to apply foundation over psoriasis is a personal choice, but if it's something you've tried on your own psoriatic skin, you're likely familiar with the challenges it presents. With the wrong product, there's ample opportunity for dryness, irritation, and all-around discomfort. Luckily, Annie Gonzalez, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami is here to share what you need to know about the best foundations for psoriasis.

"Applying foundation to skin with active psoriasis can be challenging," says Dr. Gonzalez. "Plaque psoriasis has scales that can be uncomfortable and easily irritated. The last thing you want to do is to make the psoriasis look or feel drier... which can happen if you apply it incorrectly."

When putting foundation on top of psoriasis, Dr. Gonzalez suggests applying as little makeup as possible. To do this, start with a light layer of buildable foundation, then add more in small increments so you don't overdo it. Plus, you should avoid applying makeup to any open lesions or scars.

"For covering up psoriasis, choose liquid-based cosmetics rather than powder-based ones, which can be drying and accentuate skin flaking," she says. "Also, look for fragrance-free products, which are less likely to irritate your skin. She adds that you might want to avoid foundation with pink undertones as those can accentuate any redness the psoriasis is causing.

Below, shop five of the best foundations for psoriasis.

Este Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation $43.00

Shirley Chi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Southern California, is a huge fan of this product for psoriatic skin. She says its great for long-lasting coverage, and is designed to stay in place for up to 24 hours.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation $35.00

For heavier coverage, I like Fix Fluid from MAC, says Dr. Gonzalez. Red areas are hard to cover while still looking natural. This foundation does a great job with that. Its the closest to an oil-free foundation that MAC makes, and it helps to control oil skin while providing a matte finish. It sinks into the skin nicely with buildable coverage.

Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream $50.00

Dr. Chi also loves Jane Iredale products for those with psoriasis. This BB Cream was designed with sensitive skin in mind, and is formulated with soothing aloe and hydrating sunflower seed oil to keep skin calm, nourished, and irritation-free.

Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation $30.00

This tinted sunscreen is the only complexion product to have the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association, meaning its free of common irritants. Though eczema and psoriasis are different conditions, the ingredients precautions one needs to take with each are similar, which makes this a great pick for those with psoriasis.

Dermablend Flawless Creator Multi-Use Liquid Foundation $44.00

This derm-developed product is a great lightweight, buildable foundation that has been tested on sensitive skin. One drop goes a long way, allowing you to get the most out of the formula.

Researchers Reveal Structure of Itch Receptors on Cells | Newsroom – UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine

Posted: at 12:50 pm

UNC-Chapel Hill and UC San Francisco scientists have published work in Nature, laying the groundwork for better anti-itching medications with fewer side effects. The work was led by UNC School of Medicine scientists Bryan L. Roth, MD, PhD, Jonathan Fay, PhD, and Can Cao, PhD.

CHAPEL HILL, NC Ever wonder whats going on when you get itchy skin, whether from a rash or medication or some other bodily reaction? And why do some strong anti-itching medications make us nauseous, dry-mouthed zombies? Scientists at the UNC School of Medicine and the University of California at San Francisco conducted research showing in precise detail how chemicals bind to mast cells to cause itch, and the scientists figured out the detailed structure of receptor proteins on the surface of these cells when a compound is bound to those proteins.

This work, published in Nature, was led by the labs of Bryan L. Roth, MD, PhD and Jonathan Fay, PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Brian Shoichet, PhD, at UC San Francisco, co-senior authors who have collaborated on previous studies of important cell receptors protein complexes that chemicals (including drugs) bind to cause or stop a reaction inside cells.

Our work provides a template for the design of new anti-itch medications, said Roth, the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology. Also, our research team did a truly remarkable job showing precisely how chemically distinct compounds induce itching through one of two distinct receptors known to be involved in itching.

First author Can Cao, PhD, a postdoctoral research in the Roth lab, and co-senior author Jonathan Fry, PhD, now an assistant professor in the UNC Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, led the experiments during the COVID pandemic.

On the surface of cells sit receptor proteins you can think of as complex locks. When a chemical key enters the lock, not only does the cell open, but the chemical causes a chain reaction of signals inside cells. Many chemicals do this, from naturally occurring dopamine in the brain to caffeine and cocaine.

When it comes to itch, Roths lab identified two receptors called MRGPRX2 on the surface of mast cells and MRGPRX4 on itch-sensing neurons that live in connective tissue and play roles in allergies, immune tolerance, wound healing and other factors in health and disease.

Several drugs unintentionally flood these receptors to trigger the release of histamines, causing the side effect of itching. Drugs such as

nateglinide for diabetes, as well as morphine, codeine, and the cough suppressant dextromethorphan are known to cause this reaction. Antihistamines are designed to tamp down the itch response, but they and other anti-itching medications do so clumsily, tripping other cell signaling pathways to cause side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, nausea, etc.

The researchers used the experimental technique electron microscopy to create high-resolution maps of these complex receptor proteins when bound to a compound that causes the release of histamines to cause itchiness. They also clarified how drugs bind to MRGPRX4 to cause itch related to various drugs and liver diseases. The researchers used the CryoEM Core Facility at UNC-Chapel Hill to determine the receptor structures.

Knowing precisely how all this plays out at the molecular level will help us and others create better ways to control the role of these two receptors in itchiness and other conditions, Roth said.

MRGPRX2 and MRGPRX4 have also been implicated in inflammation arising from the nervous system, eczema, ulcerative colitis, and pain.

The relatively potent agonists and antagonists described in our Nature paper provide chemical probes we can use to explore the biology of these receptors, Roth said, And the structures we revealed so far should accelerate the search for specific medications targeting MRGPRs.

The National Institutes of Health funded this research.

Neutron Crystallography Takes a Deep Dive Into Water Networks Surrounding DNA – SciTechDaily

Posted: at 12:47 pm

Vanderbilt University researchers used neutrons at ORNL to reveal the hydrogen bonding patterns between water molecules (shown in blue) and DNA. The findings could help provide insights into how water influences DNA function. Credit: ORNL/Jill Hemman

Water plays several important roles within the human body, even affecting the DNA in our cells. The entire surface of a DNA double helix is coated in layers of water molecules. This sheath of water attaches to the genetic material through hydrogen bonds, made by sharing hydrogen atoms between molecules. Through hydrogen bonds, water can influence how DNA takes shape and interacts with other molecules. In some cases, water can help proteins recognize DNA sequences.

Scientists can estimate where hydrogen bonds occur and how hydrogen atoms are shared, but it is difficult to gather experimental evidence. A research team led by Vanderbilt University has used a method that successfully captured the most detailed view to date of waters hydrogen bonding patterns around DNA, opening new possibilities for studying how water impacts DNA function. Details on the methodology and the results, produced in part through neutron scattering at the Department of Energys (DOEs) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), are published in the journal Nucleic Acids Research.

Water serves as a mediator between DNA and other molecules, even for very specific interactions. Before any molecule can bind to a segment of DNA, it must first go through this water shell, said Martin Egli, a biochemistry professor at Vanderbilt University and corresponding author of the study. To advance our understanding of DNA processes, its important to know exactly what the surrounding water does and how it arranges itself around molecules.

X-ray diffraction experiments have shed light on where water molecules are located around DNA, but the hydrogen bonding patterns between these molecules have remained hidden. Neutrons, on the other hand, are more sensitive to light elements, like the hydrogen atoms in water, which enable researchers to determine where hydrogen bonds occur and from which molecules they originate.

With x-rays, the typical electron density you get for a water molecule is a sphere, like a soccer ball. You cannot see hydrogen atoms, so the molecule has no directionality to it, said Leighton Coates, an ORNL scientist involved in this study. Whereas, with neutrons, water molecules look more like boomerangs. You can see how the hydrogens are oriented and determine hydrogen bonding patterns.

To conduct this research, the team used a crystalized sample of a well-studied DNA fragment with six base pairs, alternating between cytosine and guanine. Known as d(CGCGCG), this fragment was the first DNA sequence to have its crystal structure determined in 1979. Using a deuterium oxide solution, the scientists replaced many of the hydrogen atoms in the fragment with deuterium atoms. Deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, is seen differently by neutrons compared with hydrogen, allowing the researchers to use deuterium to selectively collect information on the DNA and water structures.

The research team collected neutron diffraction data on this fragment using the macromolecular neutron diffractometer (MaNDi) at ORNLs Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). To reduce water movement, the team cooled the sample to 100 K (nearly 280F) using cold nitrogen gas.

By lowering water mobility in our sample, we can keep the water molecules in a lattice-like arrangement, allowing us to lock down where they are and how they are positioned, said Egli. If we collected this data at room temperature, the positions of many water molecules would essentially be smeared, distributed over various locations in space.

With neutrons, we could also differentiate water molecules by the number of hydrogen bonds, such as whether they are involved in multiple bonds or just one, added Joel Harp, a research assistant professor of biochemistry at Vanderbilt University and study co-author.

X-ray diffraction experiments were performed on a similar crystal at the Biomolecular Crystallography Facility at the Vanderbilt University Center for Structural Biology to determine where the oxygen atoms of water molecules are situated around the DNA fragment.

By combining these complementary techniques, the researchers achieved the most detailed analysis yet of water molecule orientations around a DNA double helix. They captured the orientations of 64 water molecules either in direct contact with the DNA fragment or nearby. The study revealed how hydrogen bonds are donated or accepted by water molecules within prominent parts of the DNA structure, including inside its grooves and around its sugar-phosphate backbone. Some of the hydrogen bonds were unexpected, going against previous assumptions, demonstrating that this method could help verify molecular dynamics models for DNA water networks.

The research team is now using this method to study how water behaves around other macromolecules, such as RNA.

Now, I believe its time to apply what we have learned in more challenging projects, said Egli. Water is such a basic entity of life, and there are still many things to be discovered.

ICMP issued its first DNA match report on this day 20 years ago Sarajevo Times – Sarajevo Times

Posted: at 12:47 pm

As a result of this report, the body of a 15-year old boy who had disappeared at Srebrenica was identified. This marked the start of a revolutionary new process using advanced database and DNA technology to identify large numbers of persons missing from armed conflict and human rights abuses.

Working with families of the missing and governments in the Western Balkans, ICMP became the first organization to successfully implement a population-based, DNA-led identification process in a post-conflict environment. The use of DNA not only increased the speed of identifications, but also provided irrefutable evidence of a persons identity that could be linked back to the original crime scene, said Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General of ICMP.

As she stated this process has enabled families of the missing to secure their rights to truth and justice and has laid the foundations for an honest reckoning of atrocities that were committed.

It has helped to uncover the truth about war crimes and I hope that it will prevent the political manipulation of the missing persons issue, she added.

Following the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia more than 40,000 persons were reported missing. ICMP supported the work of families of the missing and the regional governments starting in 1996. In addition to supporting the investigation into thousands of missing persons cases, to creating purpose-specific legislation and to enabling the establishment of impartial missing persons institutions, ICMP collected data, including genetic reference samples from over 100,000 families of the missing who voluntarily provided their data.

This means that all families, regardless of nationality religion, gender, or any other factor, participate in efforts to find their missing relatives. In addition, ICMP received over 60,000 post-mortem samples from governments and issued 41,055 DNA-match reports enabling DNA to be used as the frontline of regional identification efforts.

This unprecedented achievement includes identifying 7,000 of the approximately 8,000 persons missing from the Srebrenica Genocide, announced the ICMP.
