Bangladesh decodes genomes of freshwater dolphin, Ruhi, and Kalbaus – The Business Standard
Posted: November 17, 2021 at 1:23 pm
After sequencing the jute genome in 2017, Bangladesh has now brought another landmark achievement in scientific research: it decoded the genomes of Ruhi, Kalbaus and freshwater dolphin, a global first.
At the same time, the country also completed sequences of the Mrigel and Catla fishes, which was however done earlier by China and India respectively.
A team led by Chittagong University Zoology Department Professor Dr Manzoorul Kibria unveiled the genome sequences of the four carps and the Gangetic freshwater dolphin after a two-year effort.
The US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has already recognised the work and Bangladesh has the patent on it. It also preserved the sequenced data which can be accessed by any researcher around the world for further research.
The information was revealed at a webinar organised by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in Chattogram on Tuesday.
Dr Manzoorul Kibria, also coordinator of the Halda River Research Laboratory under the University of Chittagong, and Dr AMAM Junaid Siddiqui, professor at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University, were present at the event.
Professor Junaid Siddiqui provided technical support as a genome sequence expert to the team comprising two researchers from New Zealand and China, five students from Chittagong University, five from the Veterinary University and Premier University.
"We completed genome sequencing of Ruhi, Kalbaus and Gangetic dolphins for the first time in the world," Junaid Siddiqui told The Business Standard.
"The genome sequence of freshwater dolphins has elevated Bangladesh's position on the world stage," added the professor.
Some 82,788 genes have been identified in this study, of which 16,609, are of Ruhi fish, 16,597 of Catla fish, 16,607 of Mrigal fish, 17,620 of Kalbaus fish, and 18,365 genes of the freshwater dolphin, said Prof AMAM Junaid Siddiqui.
"Halda river is the only natural pure gene bank for fishes like Ruhi in Bangladesh. The modern complete genome formatting is a very effective method in scientific research which helps us conduct the physiological research of the fishes," said Dr Manjurul Kibria who led the research.
"Various comparative studies have been done to determine the genetic differences between different carp species. However, no complete genome sequencing of wild Ruhi, Catla, Mrigal and Kalbaus had been revealed before."
"As such, the research will help us with different diseases of the fishes, their capability to respond to the diseases, inbreeding problems, and other important biological processes," said Dr Manzoorul Kibria.
The research team collected specimens from a dead dolphin, weighing 70-80 kg, and some 16-17 kg Ruhi, Catla, Mrigal and Kalbaus fishes, in 2018.
Junaid Siddiqui said, "We can now also work on finding out the reasons why freshwater dolphins die frequently. We can know whether it is a genetic problem or because of water contamination."
"We will also be able to know why Halda fishes are different from others and what their characteristics are."
He added, "Several researchers from University of Andrews and various other institutes have expressed interest in working with us on further research."
The PKSF and the Integrated Development Foundation (IDF) financially supported the research project.
PKSF Managing Director Nomita Halder said, "We responded immediately upon getting a proposal from Professor Manjurul Kibria for the project."
"We did not take it simply as a project but as our social responsibility to save the Halda river."

India has sequenced over 100,000 viral genomes as part of its surveillance effort – Hindustan Times
Posted: at 1:23 pm
At least 100,000 genomes of the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has been sequenced by the consortium of laboratories that keep an eye out for variants that might lead to a surge in infection. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), which consists of 10 central laboratories and 28 regional ones, has sequenced 115,101 samples since January this year.
Of the total samples, over 65,000 samples were assigned lineages by the Pangolin software used by the researchers to determine which variant family they belong to. Of these, 69% of samples are known variants of interest (VOI) or variants of concern (VOC), according to the latest bulletin of the consortium.
At present, delta and its sub-lineage continue to be the dominant variant. Delta (B.1.617.2 and AY.x) continues to be the main VOC in India. No new VOI or VOC are noted and other VOC and VOI other than Delta are now negligible in sequencing data from India, the bulletin states. A previous bulletin had clarified the delta sub-lineage AY4.2 that was declared as a variant of interest by the UK was found in 0.1% of the samples. It is too low to be of a concern at the time, the bulletin from November 1 states.
The original delta variant (B1.617.2) continues to be the most dominant one in India, found in 66% of all the samples sequenced, according to data from outbreak.info, which compiles data from the global GISAID database. Delta is followed by five sub-lineages of it AY.43 (7%), AY.39 (5%), AY.44 (3%), AY.20 (3%), and AY.33 (2%).
In October-end, HT reported that there were 17 genome sequences that were being re-looked by researchers from INSACOG in order to see whether they can be classified as AY4.2. There are two mutations in the spike protein and one in the ORF region of the viral genome; if a sequence contains two of the three mutations coupled with the ones for delta variant they are considered to be AY4.2.
The scrutiny around AY.4.2 arose after the latest technical briefing by the Public Health England (PHE) upgraded the variant as being under investigation. The PHE document, dated October 22, said the key decision is based on AY.4.2 having a modestly increased growth rate and a higher secondary rate of attack the ability to pass the infection on to someone was higher than Deltas (12.4% versus 11.1%).
Among the total samples that have been assigned lineages so far this year, Alpha accounts for 6.4%, beta 0.33%, gamma 0.003%, delta 43.9%, close relatives of delta (B1.617.1 and B1.617.3) account for 8.2% of the sequences, and the AY sub-lineage of delta accounts for 10%, according to INSACOG data.
Dr Ekta Gupta, head of the regional INSACOG laboratory at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi said, So far, there is no clinical significance of the AY variants that we are seeing. These are also similar to the delta variant that a large proportion of the population has been exposed to, so these are unlikely to cause a huge surge.
Union minister of state for science and technology Dr Jitendra Singh, in a high-level review meeting on the current status of Covid-19 research, took note that over 100,000 samples have been sequenced so far and over 57,000 patient samples have been stored at five bio-repositories across the country that will be made available to researchers and private players for the development of vaccines and therapeutics.
A vaccine testing and research facility will come up at the second campus of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) and this centre will also have a BSL-3 facility which is capable of handling airborne viruses like Covid-19. This facility will be the first of its kind in South India. The RGCB will be developed as a hub for research and testing of multiple vaccines such as cancer vaccines and those for infectious diseases, including Covid-19. This will bring huge recognition for the RGCB in the specific area of vaccine research and development, the minister said.

Kyle Rittenhouse And The Evil Of Generalized Justice OpEd – Eurasia Review
Posted: at 1:16 pm
By Jeff Deist*
In a decent society, real justice is specific and not general. In criminal mattersespecially, justice should betemporal and rooted in the facts of the instant case. Greater societal concerns, along with the identity ofdefendant and victims (sex, race, religion, notoriety, social or economic status, etc.), simply should not be considered. This is precisely why we sequester jurors, to keep them focused on the facts rather than outside influences.
Is America really prepared to fully and finally abandon this principle? To acquit or convict individuals based on the inherentlyamorphous ideaofsocial justice rather than the specifics of any particular case?
The criminal trial of Kyle Rittenhouse in Wisconsin tests this question. The case now sits with the jury, awaiting a verdict.Given the tremendous media attention given this case, one can hardly discount the pressure on jurors to announce him guilty.Their anonymity is tenuous at best, and who wants more trouble in theleafy city of Kenosha?
Anyone looking for astrong argument against cameras in the courtroom has found it. The Rittenhouseprosecutors anddefense attorneys are nowuncomfortable and unwanted celebrities of a sort. Ditto for the district judge (old white guy), whose purported pro-Trump politics are now on secondary trial. And with the nation watching, young Mr. Rittenhouse unwittinglyserves as a proxy for a dominant political narrative. His case is now a matter of generalized justice, with enormous psychological and political outcomes hanging on his fate. This is disturbing and outrageous.
The Leftportrays Rittenhouseas an avatar for everything wrong with Deplorable America. He is a gun nut, a protomilitia member, athin blue linesupporter, and a thus representative of MAGA Trumpism. As such, he is a bad guy per seand of course the jury should consider this.In the Lefts conception, a straight white Christian conservative male(assuming Rittenhouse is all those things) simply cant have legitimate political grievances. Men like himhave power; the oppressed Antifa/BLM protestors do not. As such, his causeis illegitimate and his victims cause (ostensibly protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake) is noble and righteous, even if it got out of hand.
Furthermore, whywould anyoneespecially a teenagereven possess an assault rifle to begin with? And why would he arm himself with such a rifle to go mix it up in a riot? Not to mention he crossed state lines(a bizarre point repeated ad nauseum by his detractors)!By choosing to carry a weapon to the riot that evening,he placed himself in a position where he mightuse it. We mighteven infer his intent to use it. As the prosecutor said during closing arguments,When the defendant provokes the incident, he loses the right to self-defense. You cannot claim self-defense to a danger you create. In other words, Rittenhouse was asking for trouble and got it. Never mind whether at the moment of the shooting he reasonably thought his life in danger. What matters is the general context leading up to the shooting. Bad guys (Trumpers) doing bad things (using guns they shouldnt ownto defend property in the face of a righteous protest) dont get to claim victim status.
Even beyond this assignment of generalized malice to Rittenhouses actions that night, there are some who would throw himin jail for life to soothe racial tensions in America. Never mind that the threemen Rittenhouse shot were in fact white;the mainstream media certainly did not make much effort to disabuse thefalse impression that they were otherwise(Chris Hayes at MSNBC expressed surprise at his own misperceptionabout this). Facts aside, self-defense aside, why not sacrifice one young white kid to prison if it avoids enraging black Americans who already view the criminal justice system and as racially biased against them. Why not avoid more riots and unrest? This is generalized justice writlarge. Or asDave Bennerput it:
As for law enforcementand prosecutors, have we now reached a point where rioters will be allowed to burn city blocks or even police precinct houses if their underlying cause is considered sympathetic? This seemed to be the case last year, when in cities like Kenosha and Seattle violent protesters often went uncharged or even unarrested. Its one thing for police to retreat when outgunned or outmanned, or to make strategic decisions about deploying officers to mitigate property damage. Its quite another for police, supported by mayors and city councils, simplyto pull back and allow riots, looting, and arson to occur unchallenged because they sympathizewith their perpetrators. As forlibertarians who favor criminal justice reform, the Kenosha riots are decidedlythe sort of thing that turns average people against criminals in support of cops. And you better believe wealthy people will find ways to use private security (or capture local government) to make sure Kenosha never happens in the Hamptons or Tiburon or Brentwood.
Yes, proportionaljustice means we cant shoot a fleeing thief in the back as he absconds with our laptop. Everyone recognizes this. But society is headed in a very bad direction if we allow widespread destruction, arson, theft, and disorder on the grounds that property can never trump human life. Property is necessary to sustain life, and our material surroundings are part and parcel of our humanity. Mere property is atangible expressionof human energy and past effort, not just corporate trinkets snatched from a smoldering store (they have insurance!).When it comes to force in defense of property, chase may be morally questionable but retreat is notmorally required. This is especially true of ones home.
As with the recent announcement of a federal indictmentagainst former Trump advisor Steve Bannon,Americans increasingly sense thatprosecutorsat all levels of American government often wield power as a political bludgeon. Will selective prosecution become the order of the day, rooted in identity and the perceived politics of the parties?Willguilt or innocence in criminal trials increasingly hinge on broader desirable social justice outcomes? Will we put people in jail or acquit them based on context rather than specifics?
Our common law legal tradition urgently counsels against this. So too did thelate Sam Francis, who coined the termanarcho-tyrannyto describe a scenario where government officials selectively decide who is exempt from the rules and who gets the book thrown at them. We should resist this, vigorously.

Ron Flowers Act of Remembrance this weekend | Wolverhampton Wanderers FC – wolves.co.uk
Posted: at 1:16 pm
Between 12pm and 2pm on Saturday 20th November, in the build-up to the Premier League fixture at Molineux, St Peter's Collegiate Church in Wolverhampton will open its door, allowing supporters to pay their respects by lighting candles and taking a moment to reflect.
At 1pm, an Act of Remembrance will begin, with Wolves officials including Steve Bull and John Richards in attendance, and will see words from the clubs former head of media Paul Berry shared and reverend David Wright provide a reading.
While inside the church, supporters are asked to maintain safe distances and wear a face mask unless exempt, to help keep fellow visitors safe and comfortable in their surroundings.
Either side of the 20-minute service, a book of condolence will be available for supporters to sign, starting at the church and later taking its place in the Molineux reception, allowing more opportunities for supporters to visit and pay their respects in the days following the game.
At 2pm, St Peter's will close its doors and tributes will turn to Molineux, with flowers laid out pre-match and a minutes applause allowing all those inside to pay tribute to the great man, before the game kicks off at 3pm, when both sets of players will wear black armbands.

Liz Soares: Recovering with the help of reading – Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel
Posted: at 1:16 pm
The book was sitting on a bed tray in a hospital room, where I was recuperating from surgery. My husband, Paul, had come to visit, and one of the first things Id asked him to do was to get my current reading out of my backpack.
Now a nurse came through and spotted it. Look at you, with a real book. And a library book, when no one goes to the library anymore.
I am proud to say that, despite my debilitation I was able to retort, Oh, Im a school librarian, and actually, the library is busier than ever this year.
This particular nurse turned out to be not only knowledgeable and efficient, but quite pleasant. Still, it was discouraging to me that she was surprised to see a patient with a book. It was the second thing Id packed after underwear.
My furious pandemic reading has continued unabated, as much as the virus has. Even a weeklong hospital visit didnt slow my pace. Books have always been my refuge and solace.
I finally finished Grant, by Ron Chernow, the weekend before my surgery. I try to read a biography each summer, when I have more time for what tend to be thick and (sometimes) dense tomes. I believe I began Grant in June, and took time away from it for our week at the coast, because it was too heavy to tote along. So, five months.
Whew. Now, I always I have a fiction and a nonfiction book going at the same time. Mystery is my favorite genre, and I often finish a novel in a week. Fiction provides an escape, while nonfiction broadens my mind.
I enjoyed Grant and found it quite illuminating. The great general and not-so-great president was a complex man. His courage in his final years, when he endured excruciating pain from throat cancer, was inspiring. Grant was determined to finish his memoirs in order to provide financial security for his family, and he did.
Chernows descriptions of Reconstruction reminded me that todays political climate has deep roots. The violence against black people (truly horrific), the usurpation of their voting rights, the idea that various laws or elected officials were illegitimate; these were all on full display in the years following the Civil War.
One of the joys of my autumn reading was the second in Richard Osmans series, The Thursday Murder Club. These delightful mysteries feature a quartet of friends who live in an upscale British retirement community and who get themselves involved in real-life cases. Each has their special skills: Elizabeth is former MI5 (or is it 6?); Joyce is a retired nurse; Ibrahim a psychotherapist; while Ron was a union activist. Their latest outing finds them going deep into Elizabeths espionage background. The aches, pains and heartbreaks of aging arent glossed over, but these septuagenarians have fun.
Following Grant, my next nonfiction selection was Peril, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa. I am finding the story of President Donald Trumps last year in office, and the election of Joe Biden, to be intensely readable. I didnt bring it to the hospital because I didnt think politics would aid in my recovery, so I am still reading it.
I actually found that a real book was a challenge to hold up in a hospital bed, and also required me to have more lighting than I wanted. Luckily, I had my iPad, with its Kindle app. On it, I had two perfect selections for a prolonged hospital stay. (There were complications; I ended up in critical care for a week.)
My mystery choice was The Long Call, by Ann Cleeves. Id read Cleeves earliest books, before she became famous as the creator of Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. But while a fan of her Vera and Shetland TV series, Id not read any of those books. The Long Call is the first in a new series featuring police detective Matthew Venn. Hes a complex character who grew up in a restrictive religious sect, broke free, and later married his beloved Jonathan. The North Devon (southwest England) setting is vividly described and the mystery is timely and absorbing.
For nonfiction, I realized Id never finished Wintering, by Katherine May, which came out last year. It was the perfect pandemic book. May writes about the times in our lives when we may have to step back and do nothingnot quite hibernate, but take a hiatus from striving. She visits Iceland and Norway (above the Arctic Circle) and explores the cold weather lives of dormice, honey bees and wolves.
Mays words struck home as I endured my wintry week. I couldnt eat or drink. My only goal was to recover. My usual life was behind me; I could only hope it was waiting for me on the other side.
Im home now, and still reading. Ive returned to Peril and read the second Matthew Venn, The Herons Cry. And the first in Cleeves Shetland series, Raven Black. Now Im onto the second, White Nights.
Ive got a ways to go yet, health-wise. Books will get me there.

WHERE DEPRIVATION LIES Evolve As Futuristic Killing Machines on Riches to the Conjurer" – Metal Injection.net

Hey there, tech fiends. It's that time of the week again. Before we dive into today's focus, here's the usual reminder that all prior editions of this series can be perusedhere.
The UK tech-death scene has definitely been on a hot streak for a while so I'm glad to help launch a new song today from another band in the region called Where Deprivation Lies. The last time I covered this British quintet was back in 2018 when I listed their EP, Psalms to the Synthetic Divine on my year-end list for this column that year.
For anyone new to the group. it might help to back up a bit, as several members of Where Deprivation Lies cut their teeth live and on studio releases under the name Circle Spectre Haunting for many years prior to this current project getting off the ground. Although I didn't get around to covering that project, the music was damn good and all of their time spent developing as musicians in that project prior to the formation of WDL shows in the quality music that Where Deprivation Lies creates.
I think the best way to cut at the heart of what they do is to think of their music as cutting into two dual tech-death intersections at once, on one front that would be the more Vale of Pnath and The Black Dahlia technical melodic death strains of technical death metal. And, at the other end of their sound, a focus on Soreption and The Zenith Passage inspired ideas, which means groovy, brutal, and progressive death metal-inspired tech-death ideas that do feel sort of cyber-ish for lack of a better qualifier. The end result is still something I've not heard many bands in the tech-death sphere create which is why I'm excited to help launch "Riches to the Conjurer" today. The song comes off the group's debut album, Tempest which will see release on December 4th. Prior to the launch of today's single, you can also check out the debut single, "Valkyrie" which features a ripping guitar solo from Cognizance mastermind Alex Baille.
The band was kind enough to share with us today that "Having released the first single "Valkyrie", today we launch the next blistering track, "Riches to the Conjurer", a crushing barrage of technical death metal journeying through the dystopian hellscape of the cyberpunk world, to create a distinctly intense auditory experience, designed to fire up the synapses and truly immerse the listener."
Although I have not heard all of Tempest in full, I'm fairly certain it'll be worth your time and money based on the two singles available and the sonic groundwork laid on their prior 2018 EP. So be sure to check out "Riches to the Conjurer" below along with "Valkyrie" and Pslams to the Synthetic Divine from 2018 if you haven't heard it yet. Pre-orders should be up sometime today on Bandcamp. You can follow the band over on Facebook and Instagram.

How Sci-Fi Films Use Asian Characters to Telegraph the Future While Also Dehumanizing Them – Hollywood Reporter
Posted: at 1:16 pm
A new video presentation at Los Angeles Occidental College from Thai-American artist and curator Astria Suparak looks at how Asian characters and cultures are represented in American science fiction cinema.
In the work part of the show Encoding Futures: Critical Imaginaries of AI at the colleges public arts space Oxy Arts Suparaks visual analysis interrogates how Asians are often employed as two-dimensional props whose presence is used to signify a speculative future, while the environment of many of these films leans heavily on a patchwork of Asian cityscapes, symbols, and cultural traditions, creating a gulf between how the future is coded and who gets meaningful character development. The result is a long-standing trend of whitewashed science fiction films where appropriation is excused as a tool for depicting diversity on screen.
Suparaks video essay, titled Asian Futures Without Asians, exists as a database of science-fiction films that incorporate Asian culture as a shorthand to telegraph futurism while failing to develop real storylines and characters for Asian actors within these universes.
I started off as just another viewer of sci-fi and escapist fantasy just to decompress after work, but its impossible, at least for me, to not notice how Asian cultures are used in this genre, Suparak, who grew up in Los Angeles, tells The Hollywood Reporter. When I knew I wanted to work on this project I started by watching the films that I had access to and cataloging the obvious visual markers of Asian-ness that I recognized on first watch.
Suparaks project compiles clips from several films and draws upon research culled from watching several more, like Flash Gordon, Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Soylent Green, Logans Run, the Star Wars franchise and Blade Runner, to investigate how future societies are persistently rendered in non-diverse and non-progressive ways in visual media culture.
This whole series of projects under the name Asian Futures Without Asians draws on over 50 years of white-made American futuristic sci-fi, so its absurd that in this realm of sci-fi where you can imagine anything anything is possible that we still have these really old, tired, stale stereotypes of Asian culture and what Asians can be, Suparak says.
Techno-orientalism was first coined in Rutgers University Press 2015 book Techno-Orientalism: Imagining Asia in Speculative Fiction, History, and Media. Edited by David S. Roh, Betsy Huang and Greta A. Niu, it investigates the phenomenon of how Asia and Asians are represented in hypo- or hyper-technological terms, while critically examining the stereotype of Asians as both technologically advanced and intellectually primitive, in dire need of Western consciousness-raising, per the books description.
According to Suparak, theres a prevailing media trope that situates Asian cultures as ancient and static think samurais, plus katana swords and other props from eras long ago while simultaneously being used to suggest technological advancement and the impressive speed of metropolises like Tokyo and Shanghai.
Theyre not only reflecting the biases and stereotypes and prejudices of the culture, but theyre also influencing that culture back, Suparak notes of the big-budget Hollywood movies she references. That includes 2017s Ghost in the Shell, a live-action remake of the Japanese manga of the same name, wherein Scarlett Johansson plays a Japanese cyborg a casting choice that drew major whitewashing criticism upon its release.
Ultimately, Asian Futures Without Asians illuminates the lopsided nature of one Hollywood genre and critiques the way media is concepted to guide audience empathy. Suparaks video essay investigates how artificial intelligence is coded in film, and the ways in which sympathetic robots and cyborgs, who are often white, are designed as who the audience is supposed to root for, Suparak says, adding: The way theyre presented is in stark contrast to how Asian robots are often dehumanized.
Encoding Futures which examines how artificial intelligence molds society, and how algorithms have the power to define the world to come was co-organized by Oxy Arts with Mashinka Firunts Hakopian, Mellon professor of the practice at Occidental, and Meldia Yesayan, director of Oxy Arts. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to looking at representation, both in terms of how the future is presented and who gets to exist there.
Says Hakopian of selecting Suparaks work for the show, Part of the reason why it was so crucial to include this work is because it is a really remarkable media archaeology thats looking at how Hollywood cinema has shaped popular imaginaries of AI. And so, Hollywood has played an outsized role in determining what AI looks like, sounds like, feels like within the popular imaginary. And I think Astrias piece does an incredible job of bringing that to the fore.
Encoding Futures: Critical Imaginaries of AI is up through Nov 19, at Oxy Arts, 4757 York Blvd, Los Angeles, oxy.edu/oxy-arts.

Mohamed bin Salmn, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the project to create the futuristic city of Neom, announced the construction of the Oxagon Industrial Center, which will become the largest floating industrial complex in the world, collect local media.
The Oxagon industrial city will be located on the Red Sea near the Suez Canal, in a large territory in the southwest of Neom, and will have an octagonal shape that will minimize the impact on the environment.
It is envisaged that this city can achieve world-class production levels while reducing net carbon emissions to zero.
The official Neom Twitter account highlights that Oxagon will become the place where ideas can change the world.
Oxagon will contribute to redefining the global approach to industrial development in the future, protecting the environment while creating jobs and growth for Neom, said the crown prince in that context. It will contribute to Saudi Arabias regional trade and support the creation of a new focal point for global trade flows, he added.
