Food Anxiety and The Festive Season – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE
Posted: November 28, 2021 at 9:45 pm
Having struggled with an eating disorder myself, there is no doubt that the festive season can be one of the most stressful times of the year. The holiday season is supposed to be a time for relaxation and fun. But, it seems like the whole festive season revolves almost entirely around food and eating. When you are already struggling with anxiety around food and eating, it can seem like the worst time of the year. But, though it doesnt necessarily help, you arent alone. In fact, some research suggests that one-third of all holiday stress derives from food-based overindulgence. Below is a combination of research and personal experience which I can only hope will help if you are in a similar position. This isnt medical advice and I still recommend seeing a professional who can help you in the long term and deal with your specific difficulties.Try to stop viewing food as good and bad
For me, this has been one of the most difficult things to do. To be totally honest, I still struggle with it. Seeing food as neutral rather than good or bad means letting go of all those toxic things youve been taught.
Abby Langer R.D. explained in an article for Self that going into the holiday season with the intention of restricting calories and strict plans usually ends in disaster. This all-or-nothing mentality can lead to even more negative feelings around eating and your body. Usually, these super restrictive rules lead to slip-ups. Once youve broken your rules, it can be easy to end up bingeing and ultimately, making yourself feel worse.
As difficult as it is when you begin to see food as neutral and simply eat what you feel like, at the time, it takes a weight off your mind. Ive found that focusing on listening to what my body wants has resulted in me eating less sugary snacks and more healthy foods that are nutritious and, generally good.
Its also important to realize that the low-calorie option isnt always the best option nutrition-wise. Eating a balanced and healthy diet is ultimately going to be better for you. That can include protein, salad, vegetables, and some sweet holiday snacks.
Its easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit and end up buying all the sweets and chocolates available. I have an awful tendency to fall for the pretty packaging and can end up buying things that, without that pretty container, I wouldnt usually buy. Making a list before you go shopping can be hugely beneficial for this and can help you to avoid falling into this trap.
It will also help you to eat better in the time surrounding the holidayswhen youre still cooking for yourself. Maintaining a normal way of eating as much as possible is of huge benefit and can make you feel that youre more in control.
Its also worth saying here that, if you dont have it, you cant eat it. If you are looking to avoid unhealthy snacks and foods, making sure you keep them to a minimum will inevitably help you to avoid them, at least when youre in your own house.
Planning to have healthy snacks on hand can also be of huge benefit to those last-minute invitations. You can bring something from home that you are comfortable eating, which means that youll have a safe option to rely on.
Unfortunately, there seems to be at least one in every family. It might be that random uncle whocomments on your body or weight that you can usually avoid.
Photographee.eu/Shutterstock
However, over the holiday season, you are forced to interact with him. Its definitely not great but, unfortunately, it can be unavoidable. When you are forced into interactions with those types of people, try to set boundaries with them right up front.
For instance, Langer suggests telling them that you wont discuss your body or your diet. She also suggests the thats none of your business angle might work. However, it could also cause issues so what I try to do is stay away from those types of people as much as I possibly can.
Alternatively, if you really cannot manage to avoid them, try to immediately re-direct the conversation when you start to feel triggered. Remember that you always have the right to take some time away from everybody to breathe and regain control of the situation. If you really struggle, try to chat to a friend about being on hand for a text if you need emotional support.
Remember that you are human and that things can affect your emotions differently even on a day-to-day basis. Trying to take some personal time away from people during the holiday season, as I find this can really be helpful in maintaining a more balanced perspective. Taking care of yourself and accepting the way you feel is also hugely helpful when it comes to dealing with food and the holidays.
As much as you can, try to actually enjoy the food itself and become more focused on the enjoyment than the calories or carbs. It can be a difficult time when it comes to food, forgive yourself when you are unable to cope, and really take time to analyze how you feel. Itll likely help you in the future.

San Diego nonprofit gets grant to help seniors living in its affordable housing communities – The San Diego Union-Tribune
Posted: at 9:45 pm
Denise Obrero understood the power of housing stability early in her career and learned a deep respect for elders and seniors from her family and community. The ability to combine those passions in her latest work with Community HousingWorks is an opportunity she welcomes.
The nonprofit organization develops, rehabilitates and operates affordable housing in San Diego County and California, providing programming, resources and services to help residents.
Last month, it was one of a number of local nonprofits awarded grants from The San Diego Foundation for efforts to enhance the quality of life for older San Diegans.
With a $30,000 grant, CHW is launching a yearlong pilot program for seniors 55 and older in their housing communities to work part time in areas that include education-related programs with children, health and wellness programs, and services that include food delivery or financial literacy support for fellow senior residents.
Obrero, 50, is director of programs for the nonprofit and has previously worked as a teacher and in managing public funding to support affordable housing developers. She divides her time between living in Golden Hill with her son, Kai Pele, and their dog, Chivo; and San Clemente to take care of her aging parents. She took some time to talk about the organizations pilot program and how her experiences growing up in Los Angeles in the 1990s, and her previous work in education, have influenced how she approaches her nonprofit work today.
Q: Where did the idea for this kind of program for seniors come from?
A: For some time, weve been discussing how the senior population in San Diego and in CHWs communities is growing rapidly. Weve made some move in terms of our development focus to address this, by building several senior-focused communities in the past few years (including North Park Seniors, which specifically serves the LGBTQ population, along with Mission Cove Seniors in Oceanside, and Windsor Gardens, which is a rehab project in Escondido).
This initiative is really about the programs and services we deliver once these communities are built. All of our programs and services are designed to provide residents with a platform for success, and what that looks like for seniors is the ability to age in a safe, stable and affordable home where they can rely on neighbors and engage in community activities that increase health and wellness.
Q: Why did your organization want to focus on employment, financial independence and decreasing isolation?
A: In conversations about seniors in our society, we hear that they still have a lot to contribute, even in retirement. There is a tremendous amount of leadership and energy that can benefit other generations of residents, while giving seniors a way to stay mentally and physically active. Theres a great deal of data to support that decreasing isolation leads to better health outcomes, which means greater longevity and independence. We saw a need with our after-school programming, which really excels when we have part-time support in helping with the children at each of our sites. This pilot will test whether these two needs can be met with the same initiative, and to see how that might function in terms of providing some additional resources to seniors living on a fixed income, particularly at a time when prices for so many things are rising.
Q: How have your experiences growing up in Los Angeles, and as a teacher in New York and Oakland, influenced the way youve approached your later work in nonprofit organizations?
A: All of my experiences in North America and living abroad have shaped the way that I approach working in high-need communities and raising my son. I am a compassionate, empathetic, tolerant and spiritual human being. The epidemic of gang-related homicides while growing up in L.A. was deeply impactful, and I have seen generational trauma in the communities that I have worked in. Looking back, I would not change one decision because in each of these urban cities, Ive learned a great deal about myself. I lean into taking risks and moving to new areas because I enjoy the challenges that come with not knowing everyone. I have intentionally continued to work in a nonprofit organization because I want to positively influence and move the needle in terms of using housing as a platform for resident success.
I was drawn to Golden Hill because it offers one of San Diegos most historic and architecturally eclectic buildings with many homes from before the 1900s. It is centrally located and close to downtown. It is a vibrant community of cool shops, restaurants and boutiques intermixed with small mom-and-pop businesses that I like to support. The neighborhood is very walkable, and the neighbors are friendly. Golden Hill has the type of vibe and diversity that reminds me of growing up in Los Angeles and parts of the Bay Area.
Q: Whats been challenging about your work?
A: Our current housing crisis is clearly a challenging health issue. We struggle to debunk and fight against the Not in My Backyard attitudes, and we cannot build homes fast enough to meet our current regional housing gaps. Another glaring layer to this is the historical context. When we analyze the federal housing policies in the 1940s and 1950s, there was a deliberate system of oppression targeted at people of color. The federal government created the Federal Housing Association (FHA) in order to spur homeownership. However, the long-term mortgage loan opportunities were only for White homeowners. Redlining occurred in areas like southeastern San Diego, which were earmarked as hazardous. If you are reading my story today and are intrigued to learn more about the history of subsidized housing, racial covenants and their role in housing segregation, please, take the time to read The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein.
Q: Whats been rewarding about this work?
A: Hearing our senior residents lived experiences and stories. They embody genuine humility, grace and grit. For me, I feel the human connection with people who have the same dreams for their children and grandchildren as I do. Since 1994, I have been working in this vibrant industry. My first career path was teaching in urban cities and when I conducted home visits to my students apartments in communities like West Oakland, I saw firsthand that opportunities began with housing stability. Seeing the smiles and successes from our residents has been the most rewarding part of this work. Knowing that neighbors are consistently caring for each other especially during last years lockdown was truly inspirational.
Q: What is the best advice youve ever received?
A: Doors will close, doors will open in your life and This, too, shall pass. My 78-year-old dads sage advice has helped me to clearly recognize that a negative event or circumstance often leaves room for the beginning of something positive. In 1977, my parents took a big leap of faith and became small business owners in South Central Los Angeles. During the 1992 Los Angeles riots, it felt like the world was closing in on all of us. My parents embodied the resilience that you need to carry on along with the residents. Our community rallied together and collectively became organized and stronger in many ways.
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?
A: People often ask about my nationality. On my fathers side, his mom emigrated from Hermosillo, Mexico, and his dad emigrated from the Philippines. On my mothers side, her parents emigrated from Japan to Los Angeles (via Angel Island). In 1942, my grandparents lost everything they owned when they were forced into the Japanese internment camps. When my grandparents and family returned from the Wyoming relocation center, they helped to create the close-knit neighborhood of Little Tokyo in downtown L.A. There was a strong sense of belonging that provided ongoing support for seniors and residents in need. Because of my multiracial background, I see the world from a multicultural lens. My relatives on both sides of my family have instilled a strong respect for all elders and seniors. Elders offer their life experiences and stories, and bring wisdom that is part of the fabric of our extended family and collective community.
Q: Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend.
A: It starts off with pretty strong coffee and lounging in the backyard garden patio. I would definitely (join) my two close friends from my UC San Diego days to get a body detox spa treatment at Karma Massage in Hillcrest. Afterward, we would find a Korean barbecue or sushi spot to share a leisurely lunch where were typically eating and talking for hours. That evening, I would get my dog and walk along the beach in Del Mar, watching the sunset.
On Sunday morning, I enjoy reading the print version of the paper and going to yoga in the park. My ideal day would be spent listening to podcasts and Common Kings island music, and maybe paddle boarding at the beach. I also enjoy stopping by The Ecology Center in Encinitas and purchasing a farm share fresh produce box for the rest of the week. My weekend would wrap up with barbecuing in the backyard and enjoying time with my aging parents and my son. We always try to plan Sunday dinners together.

Ways to feel connected this holiday season after months of isolation: Jennifer Moss – CBC.ca
Posted: at 9:45 pm
Last December we were still deep in social distancing and isolation.
But here we are a year later, and the holiday season feels a bit more hopeful. Evidence shows that the prospect of being able to gather playsbig role in our enthusiasm for the upcoming holiday season.
Even before the pandemic, many couldn't wait for the holidays. And this year, people are especially excited because we can be together without any major restrictions.
But being apart for such a long time and the new habits we've developed due to social distancing rules means the adjustment to full-on festivities won't be easy for everyone. But, staying isolated isn't good for our well-being either particularly during the holidays when being together in person is a major contributor to our happiness.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, connecting with others is more important than most people realize. Social connection can lower anxiety and depression, help us regulate our emotions, and can give us higher self-esteem and increase our empathy.
According to Stanford researcher Emma Seppala, social connection:
Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Low levels of social connection are associated with:
Major holidays are important for maintaining and growing close connections with family members and research shows people often experience increased wellbeing during these times.
For example, Dec.25is one of the happiest day of the year in Canada, andThanksgiving is one of the happiest days of the year in the United Statesas people claim to have the least stress.
A study that analyzed well-being during Thanksgiving in 2020 found that participants who saw even one other person face-to-face reported significantly higher personal life satisfaction, sense of growth, and wellbeing than those who did not.
The data reinforces that it's connection not gifts or food or decorations that make us happy during the holidays.
However, the holidays can place pressure on people to be happy, even when they aren't.
For some, this time of the year can feel increasingly isolating and stressful. In an era of grief where families have lost loved onesto COVID-19, celebrating can feel particularly hard.
It can also be challenging for seniors. Some may be living alone, or they can't risk being with others because of COVID-19, or travel is too hard on them physically.
This is why we really need to look out for each other and find ways to connect even more this year than ever before.
Eldercare consultant and Minding Our Elders author Carol Bradley Bursackhas several suggestions on how to better connect with our seniors. She suggests:
Most importantly, it's about reinforcing social connections and making sure our most vulnerable know that they matter and are loved.
After 20 months of being apart, it's understandable to struggle with getting out there and being social. The number of people now reporting social anxiety has skyrocketed since the pandemic.
But, it doesn't need to be this way forever. We can break the habit of disconnection to get back to what contributes most to our long-term happiness:social connection. Here are some tips to get back in the habit of hanging out.
Talk Yourself Up. It may sound hokey, but sometimes we need a little internal pep talkto make sure we don't bail at the last minute. We don't need to say yesto every event, but we should commit to one or two that are meaningful. Just plan to follow-through without giving your brain anopt-out clause.
Help the host. Focusing on tasks can help reduce anxiety and as we're handing out food or taking coats or helping out,we get time to normalize to the environment.
Hang out with the littles. According to journalist ReneeFabian, in her article 9 Ways To Manage Social Anxiety During The Holidays she shares that "adults can be anxiety-provoking. But at a family or friend party, there's a good chance there may be children, pets, or both, and they offer an opportunity to take the perceived spotlight off of you."
Fabian writes that pets can also provide mental health benefits during stressful times: "Petting animals reduces blood pressure, elevates mood, and releases endorphins."
Prep talking points. Some suggest if you are feelingextreme social anxiety to use tools like preparing a few talking points or conversation starters.
Leverage a mantra. In your head in moments where you're particularly stressed, repeat, "I'm ok" or"I'm not the only person who feels weird/uncomfortable/awkward.I am not alone."
Phone a friend. Or just plan a signal that has your friend coming to your rescue if you're really struggling in a conversation.
Despite people feeling more nervous than normal to connect with others right now, it's important to try even if it's just for a few hours.
This next month in our lives should be about gathering and reconnecting. We could all use some levity and storytelling while eating and celebrating traditions it's deeply encoded into the traits that makes us human.
And it's why so many of us, despite our stresses and worries and fears, love this season most of all.

The Horror Movies Coming to Netflix in December Include ‘Tremors’ and the ‘Final Destination’ Films – Bloody Disgusting

When it comes to classic horror, the Universal and Hammer monster movies come immediately to mind. Next, perhaps the Amicus anthologies or the films Val Lewton produced for RKO in the 1940s. But there is another great classic franchise worth consideration. The series of films directed by Roger Corman in the early 60s that have become known collectively as The Poe Cycle are a truly unique series of films. Though period films, absolutely dripping with gothic atmosphere, most utilize modern, experimental film techniques. Though they never explicitly reference the fall festival, these films are filled with cobwebs, coffins, and dungeons. They are preoccupied with the thin veil separating life and death, making them perfect fall viewing.
Beginning in the mid-50s, Roger Corman became a B-movie making machine, churning out as many as nine films in a single year. His primary partner in these ventures was American International Pictures (AIP) under the leadership of James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff. Nicholson and Arkoffs business model at the time was to make two black and white quickies, shot in ten days, and sell them together for the price of one. Corman, feeling that this method had begun to lose its luster, suggested combining the cost of the two films into one larger budget film, in color and widescreen, shot in 15 days. For the first of these, he pitched making a film based on Edgar Allan Poes short story The Fall of the House of Usher. Corman chose Poe for three main reasons. First, he had been a lifelong fan of the writer. Second, Poes material had long since fallen into the public domain and was therefore free, which greatly pleased his producers. And finally, Poes work was being taught in most American high schools and would be familiar to AIPs target audience.
Anyone who has ever had even a cursory reading of Poe will instantly recognize that these films are extremely loose adaptations of his stories. They do, however, adhere closely to the recurring themes of his work. The pain of the loss of a spouse, the mysterious nature of death, fear of being buried alive, guilt to the point of madness over wrongdoing, and more appear throughout the cycle. That said, they are a surprisingly diverse group of films. Corman was always concerned about becoming repetitive and tried multiple techniques throughout the series to make them unique from film to film while remaining unified in overall look and style.
These are also the films that cemented Vincent Price as one of the monumental figures of horror. Though known as one of the greatest of all horror icons today, Price had only made a few movies in the genre prior to signing on with AIP. He had appeared in Tower of London (1939) and The Invisible Man Returns (1940) during his Universal days, both of which only barely qualify as horror; House of Wax in 1953, The Fly (1958) and Return of the Fly (1959) as the heroic police inspector; and two William Castle films: The Tingler and House on Haunted Hill (both 1959). This may seem like a lot but keep in mind that he had racked up dozens of credits by 1960, and these seven films are the only ones that even remotely qualify as horror. The Corman films changed all of that. From then on, he made horror almost exclusively, with only a few notable exceptions, until his final feature film appearance in 1990s Edward Scissorhands.
The Fall of the House of Usher
The Fall of the House of Usher (1960) sets something of a template for the series, as well as establishing the creative personnel that would collaborate with Corman on many of the films. Richard Matheson, one of the legendary horror writers of his generation, was brought on to write the script. Floyd Crosby set the look of the films with his work as director of photography on House of Usher and would continue as cinematographer on all six films that were shot in the United States. Corman mainstay Les Baxter composed the music, some of the great unsung genre music ever written. All eight films feature production design by Daniel Haller who reused, redressed, rearranged, and built upon sets from the previous film. Because of this, the sets for The Fall of the House of Usher, though reasonably impressive considering the budget, are dwarfed by the massive, cavernous halls and passageways of the later films, particularly The Haunted Palace.
House of Usher stars Vincent Price as Roderick Usher, a man with a peculiar ailment that heightens his senses to the point of torture. In structure, it sets up many elements that would echo into other entries, coming both from Poes work and from Matheson and Corman. As with many films in the series, it begins with a character riding to a large house and ends in the conflagration of the estate. It involves the illness and apparent death of a spouse or lover and the possibility of premature burial. It is the first to feature a surreal dream or hallucinatory sequence that involves experimental film techniques and visuals. Though these themes and images return again and again, they remain engaging because of the variants in tone and character across the cycle. House of Usher was a great success, partially due to the fact that it was played on double bills throughout the summer of 1960 with Alfred Hitchcocks massive hit Psycho. Corman did not intend to make another Poe picture, but Nicholson and Arkoff were keen on capitalizing on the success of the film. As a lifelong admirer of Poe, Corman was happy to oblige, but also hoped to offer some variation to the series.
The Pit and the Pendulum
1961s The Pit and the Pendulum is the most financially successful film of the cycle. In it, Vincent Price plays the dual role of Nicholas Medina and his ancestor Sebastian, who was a ruthless inquisitor who reveled in torturing his victims during the Spanish Inquisition. The film also features Barbara Steele as Nicholass wife, whom he fears he has buried alive. Even more than House of Usher, Pendulum leans into the themes of Poe, particularly premature burial, and the death of a spouse. The film has a psychological depth rarely present in horror films of the era, and an almost Hitchcockian mystery at its heart. The final shot is disturbing and iconic and lingers on with the viewer long after the credits roll.
Tales of Terror (1962) is the one anthology film of the cycle, telling three Poe stories in one film. Again, these deal with life, death, loss, and guilt. Morella features Vincent Price as a man haunted by his dead wife. When viewed with the entirety of the cycle in mind, it plays much like a dry run from the final film of the series, The Tomb of Ligeia. The most famous segment, The Black Cat, is actually an amalgamation of three Poe stories: The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Tell-Tale Heart. Here, humor is infused into the cycle for the first time, most memorably in a wine-tasting face off between a drunk played by Peter Lorre and a pretentious wine connoisseur played by Vincent Price. The final story, Mr. Valdimar brings another horror icon, Basil Rathbone, into the mix along with a climax that resembles something out of Creepshow.
After some financial disputes between Corman and AIP, the director decided to make The Premature Burial (1962) independently. Path, the film lab that Corman had worked with previously, wanted to start a distribution department and agreed to partially finance the film with the rest of the money being put up by Corman himself. Because Vincent Price was under exclusive contract with AIP, Corman approached Ray Milland, the Oscar winning actor of Billy Wilders The Long Weekend (1945). On the first day of shooting, Nicholson and Arkoff showed up on the set to let Corman know that they had bought out Path and he was making the film for AIP. Fortunately, the working relationship was positive and continued to be for some time.
The Premature Burial is the first of the films to be written by Charles Beaumont, well known for some of the most memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone along with dozens of short stories, novels, and screenplays. Beaumonts sensibilities are quite different from Mathesons and the film has a more somber tone while remaining very engaging. Milland plays Guy Carrell, a man obsessed with the idea of being buried alive. British actress Hazel Court makes her first appearance in the series as his long-suffering wife. New to the series composer Ronald Stein cleverly weaves the refrain of Molly Malloy, the famous Irish folk tune, into his score as a repeated theme and harbinger of death. Filled with misty graveyards, crypts, and mystery, The Premature Burial is one of the most unique and atmospheric films of the cycle.
The Raven
Feeling that it would be nearly impossible to turn Poes poem The Raven into a serious film, Richard Matheson suggested making it into a comedy. Corman, always concerned with the series becoming too repetitive, agreed. Corman was no stranger to horror-comedy. A Bucket of Blood (1959) and Little Shop of Horrors (1960) were revolutionary in the ways they melded the two. The Raven (1963) would take it to the next level. It doesnt exactly mock the previous Poe films, nor the gothic horror subgenre, but it certainly knows just the right amount of fun to poke at it. The film expands on its star power by featuring horror greats Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff in addition to Vincent Price, all playing rival wizards and culminating in a duel to the death between Karloffs Dr. Scarabus and Prices Dr. Erasmus Craven. Rounding out the cast are Hazel Court, returning to the cycle for a second time, and a very young (and probably miscast) Jack Nicholson as the unappreciated son of Lorres Dr. Bedlo.
The Haunted Palace (1963) is an unusual entry in the series. First, it is not based on the poem by Edgar Allan Poe of its title, but on the novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H.P. Lovecraft. Charles Beaumont returned to the series to write the screenplay. At Cormans suggestion, Beaumont brought in elements from other Lovecraft stories to give it more depth, in Cormans words. Beaumont delivered a good script before moving on to other work, but Corman wanted a few changes, which he handed off to his assistant at the time Francis Ford Coppola, who did an uncredited dialogue polish. Here, the horror cache in the supporting cast is supplied by Lon Chaney, Jr. as the caretaker, Simon. Additionally, Milton Parsons as Jabez, Elisha Cook, Jr., John Dierkes, and Leo Gordon are all familiar faces from 40s and 50s Hollywood.
As in The Pit and the Pendulum, Price plays a dual role as an ancestor and a descendant. In this case, Charles Dexter Ward is gradually taken over by the soul of his evil great-great grandfather, Joseph Kerwin, who was burned to death by the villagers of Arkham 110 years before. The film ultimately becomes a revenge movie as Ward, overtaken by Kerwin, dispatches the descendants of those who killed him one by one. The look of the film is darker and more realistic to match the tone of its story, making it a standout in the series. It was also the final film of the cycle to be shot in the United States.
The Masque of the Red Death
For many, The Masque of the Red Death (1964) is the apex of the series. It is certainly one of the most visually stunning horror films ever made, thanks in large part to the extraordinary cinematography by Nicolas Roeg. Originally planned as the follow up to House of Usher, Corman became concerned that it was too similar in theme and story to Ingmar Bergmans meditation on religion, plague, and death The Seventh Seal (1957), so he opted for The Pit and the Pendulum instead. As the series continued to be successful, Corman felt it was time to take on Masque, which he felt was the best of Poes stories, comparisons to Bergman be damned. After reviewing Charles Beaumonts original script, Corman felt it needed a little more complexity and asked R. Wright Campbell to do a rewrite. Corman and Campbell agreed to add elements of another Poe story, Hop Frog, to achieve this added depth. The film was shot in London in five weeks, though Corman considers it more like four as British crews tended to work much more slowly than he was used to. Still, the extra time benefits the picture greatly.
Vincent Price revels in his role as the only completely irredeemable villain of the cycle, Prince Prospero, who humiliates members of his court and terrorizes his subjects for his own entertainment. Francesca, a peasant that Prospero brings into his court in an attempt to corrupt and dissuade from her heartfelt Christian beliefs, is played by English actress Jane Asher. The strong supporting cast is led by Patrick McGee as Alfredo, a member of Prosperos court but also a rival to him, and Hazel Court, returning to the series for a third time as Juliana, a devotee of Prospero and his dark allegiances. This film holds particular relevance to today as we are again faced with plague and the indiscriminate nature of death. It is a powerful reminder of imminent mortality and the fact that death will eventually come for us all.
Though neither Masque of the Red Death nor its follow-up The Tomb of Ligeia (1964) were as financially successful as earlier entries, these remain the artistic high points of the series. Ligeia is a particularly unique entry in the series for two main reasons. First, it is the only entry not written by Matheson or Beaumont, but by Robert Towne, who would go on to write the classics The Last Detail (1973) and Chinatown (1974), among others. Second, it was photographed by Hammer mainstay Arthur Grant, who brings a naturalistic look and a fluidity of camera to the film.
Of all the Poe films, Ligeia also spends the most time outdoors, taking advantage of the sunlit English countryside where it was shot, rather than in misty graveyards and behind castle walls. The film draws more from Hitchcock than the other Poe films, particularly Rebecca (1940) in which a deceased spouse haunts her former husband and his new wife, Vertigo (1958), and even a touch of Psycho (1960). Vincent Price as Verden Fell has similarities to his role of Roderick Usher, who also has great sensitivities to light. Stephanie Shepherd beautifully and subtlety plays the dual role of Ligeia and Lady Rowena, perhaps the most complex heroine of the Poe cycle, and indeed all of horror cinema up until that time. The quotation from Poe at the end of Ligeia sums up the thematic thrust of the entire cycle perfectly: The boundaries which divide life from death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends and the other begins? It is a fitting ending to this remarkable series of films.
The Tomb of Ligeia
These eight films combined form one of the most consistently strong series in all of horror history. They are similar enough to hang together as a cohesive whole, but different enough to remain engaging. The series may not have changed the face of horror the way that Frankenstein, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, or Scream did, but it did influence a generation of filmmakers and writers along the way. Stephen King, Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, John Landis, and many others all count themselves as great admirers of the cycle and saw that Corman was doing much more than meets the eye in creating them. There is an elegance, sophistication, and undercurrent of political and psychological astuteness in The Poe Cycle that is rarely found in the so-called exploitation cinema or B-pictures of the era. If you havent yet seen these classics, I humbly suggest taking a step back in time to this quiet revolution in horror cinema.

Russia’s Prichal docking module arrives at the International Space Station – Space.com
Posted: at 5:17 am
A new Russian docking module arrived safely at the International Space Station today (Nov. 26).
The Prichal module made contact with Russia's new Nauka multipurpose module today at 10:19 a.m. EST (1519 GMT), a few minutes ahead of schedule, over Ukraine. The docking hooks successfully closed at 10:25 a.m. EST (1525 GMT) without incident. The docking was carried live on NASA TV, which beamed stunning views from cameras on the International Space Station.
"It was as flawless a docking as you can have," NASA spokesperson Rob Navias said during the broadcast, in the moments after the docking completed.
Prichal Russian for "pier" brought roughly 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) of cargo to the ISS along with a substantial expansion in docking capabilities. Prichal features six new ports for the station's Russian segment, five of which are available for arriving ships.
Video: Watch Russia launch the Prichal docking module
Prichal can also transfer fuel to Nauka, a newly arrived science module that is expected to substantially increase Russian orbital research output. Beyond that, Prichal may serve as valuable practice for Russia as the country contemplates its future in the post-ISS era, according to RussianSpaceWeb.com.
State reports from Russia suggest the country may want to create its own space station later in the 2020s, either to be ready in case the aging ISS, parts of which date to 1998, falters or to respond to economic sanctions from the United States.
The U.S. and Russia have been major ISS partners dating back to the early 1990s; the current agreement goes to 2024 but could be extended to 2028 or beyond depending on whether the various partners agree on it.
The 4-ton Prichal rocketed to space on board a Russian-built Soyuz rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Wednesday (Nov. 24). Prichal rode atop a modified Progress cargo spacecraft, which delivered the new module to the orbiting lab.
The spherical module adds roughly 494 cubic feet (14 cubic meters) of internal volume to the ISS, according to RussianSpaceWeb.com. The space station is hosting record-breaking crew sizes these days thanks to the periodic arrival of four people at a time in the roomy SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Russian Soyuz vehicles are also still in operation, carrying three spaceflyers at a time.
Prichal will remain permanently docked to Nauka's Earth-facing port, and the other five available docking stations will be available for visiting spacecraft. Prichal will "expand the technical and operational capabilities of the orbital infrastructure of the Russian segment of the ISS," Russia's federal space agency, known as Roscosmos, wrote in a recent update.
The arrival of Prichal was far less eventful than that of Nauka. When the science module reached the ISS on July 29, its thrusters fired in an unexpected way, causing the ISS to rotate about 540 degrees.NASA says the space station crew was not in any danger at the time, although a spacecraft emergency was declared as a precaution.
A spacecraft earlier moved out of the way to make room for Prichal. An uncrewed Progress 78 cargo craft undocked from Nauka on Thursday (Nov. 25) for re-entry in the Earth's atmosphere. The modified Progress spacecraft that delivered Prichal to the station is expected to detach from Prichal in late December for a re-entry over the Pacific Ocean.

100 Times More Powerful Than US Tech, China Claims Its Nuclear Reactor For Space Missions Will Outdo NASA Device – EurAsian Times
Posted: at 5:17 am
Chinese scientists are currently building a powerful nuclear reactor for their moon and Mars expeditions. Beijing claims its reactor will be 100 times more powerful than the device US space agency NASA wants to set up on the moons surface by 2030.
The new technology is part of a Chinese government-backed project, according to South China Morning Post. The Asian giant has not yet revealed the exact launch date or technical specifications of the new powerful reactor that will produce one megawatt of electric power.
Two of the scientists involved in the project that was launched in 2019, however, acknowledged that the engineering design of the prototype machine is already completed and some critical components were also built.
One of the Chinese space scientists involved in the project said that the most promising solution is nuclear power. Other countries have begun to implement ambitious programs, and China cannot afford to lose this race at any cost.
One Chinese expert claims that to satisfy the objectives of human space exploration, chemical fuel and solar panels will no longer suffice; the hunger for more energy sources is likely to grow dramatically if there are human settlements on the moon or Mars in the future.
SNAP-10A, launched by the United States in 1965, was the first nuclear power device in orbit. Before being permanently shut off, the device produced 500 watts of electric power for nearly a month.
On the other hand, the only nuclear device China has deployed into space is a small radioactive battery on its lunar rover Yutu 2. Only a few watts of heat may be generated by that device to assist the rover through long lunar nights.
Many countries are currently striving to create their supremacy in space. Then-US President Donald Trump had issued an executive order in his final days in office to speed up the use of nuclear power in US civilian and military space programs. He also pointed to space as the next great-power battlefield.
Recently, NASA has issued a request for proposals for the development of a 10-kilowatt nuclear fission device capable of supporting a long-term human presence on the moon within a decade.
The plan is to deploy a fission surface power system by 2026, with a flying system, lander, and reactor in place. The facility will be completely built and integrated on Earth, then thoroughly tested for safety and functionality.
In addition, Russia has also indicated its intention to launch a massive spaceship powered by TEM, a megawatt-sized nuclear reactor, before 2030. The spaceship would be able to function in Earths lower orbit for more than a decade while conducting more missions to the moon or beyond owing to the nuclear energy.
Democritos, a parallel project led by the European Space Agency, will test a 200kW space reactor on the ground by 2023. Additionally, NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg says that the alliance will not put weapons in space, but it will be required to safeguard its assets, which include 2,000 satellites in orbit. Space is becoming an operational domain for NATO as well.
China indicated that the new nuclear space technology is so grandiose that the project may face some difficulties as it approaches its launch date. According to a report published by a project team led by Jiang Jieqiong, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Nuclear Safety Technology in Hefei, cooling technology is one of the biggest challenges for Chinas space reactor.
Only a portion of the heat produced by the reactor would be utilized to generate electricity; the leftover would have to dissipate swiftly in space to avoid a meltdown. To address this, the reactor would employ a foldable umbrella-like structure to enhance the overall surface area of waste heat radiators.
The space reactor would operate at a far higher temperature than those on Earth due to its compact size. It would utilize liquid lithium as a coolant to increase the efficiency of power generation. However, at temperatures below 180 degrees Celsius, the lithium would solidify, posing another challenge for Chinese researchers.
A ground-based power plant requires routine maintenance every few years, and some components must be replaced due to erosion induced by the radioactive surroundings. However, to address the demands of long-term space missions, materials and hardware in a space reactor must achieve a far higher level.
One more approach China is taking is rather than establishing a single large reactor, many research teams in China developed devices with lower power output. These small modules were easier to construct and could be combined to make a larger machine capable of producing several megawatts of electricity, enough to power massive ion thrusters and take astronauts to Mars.
However, the Chinese space authorities have not yet made up their minds about how they will proceed. Its possible that the solution will be a mix of technologies.
The launch of the main module for Chinas newest orbiting space station in April attracted more international attention than intended for all the wrong reasons. The primary rocket booster plunged ominously down to Earth after reaching space, in what is known as an uncontrolled re-entry.
The debris splashed in the Indian Ocean in May, barely avoiding the Maldives and prompting criticism of Chinas largest rocket, the Long March 5B, launch procedures.
Chinas first two space stations were prototypes that only lasted a few months, but the next one is expected to last a decade or more. President Xi linked it to Mao Zedongs call for two bombs, one satellite, which refers to Chinas race to produce a nuclear weapon, equip it on an intercontinental ballistic missile, and launch a satellite into orbit. It is being hailed as proof of Chinas prowess in space, as are all of the Communist Partys triumphs.
The International Space Station, which was jointly built by the US, Russia, and others, is approaching the end of its planned life in 2024.
Russia has stated that it will leave by 2025 and plans to launch its own space station by 2030. If the station is shut down, China may be the only nation in the world for a while to operate a space station.

Five planned space stations for tourists and astronauts – The National
Posted: at 5:17 am
There has been a continuous presence of humans in space since 2000, when the International Space Station became operational.
Now, as the floating laboratory gets closer to its inevitable retirement, there are questions around what would replace it.
Private companies are looking to commercialise low Earth orbit, with space stations that would welcome tourists, researchers and astronauts.
Meanwhile, government space agencies have increased their focus on the Moon, with Nasa, China and Russia looking to build a lunar base.
The National highlights some of the space stations that were announced by private companies and governments.
In October, Jeff Bezos Blue Origin announced plans to build a private space station in Earth orbit, called Orbital Reef.
The space tourism company hopes to build a mixed-use business park and is promising access to media, tourists, astronauts and researchers.
It is going to be a commercially developed, owned and operated low-Earth orbit station, built in partnership with Boeing, Redwire Space, Sierra Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions and Arizona State University.
For over sixty years, Nasa and other space agencies have developed orbital space flight and space habitation, setting us up for commercial business to take off in this decade, Brent Sherwood from Blue Origin said at the time of the announcement.
We will expand access, lower the cost, and provide all the services and amenities needed to normalise space flight. A vibrant business ecosystem will grow in low Earth orbit, generating new discoveries, new products, new entertainments, and global awareness.
The plan is to begin operations within this decade, after launching a power system, core module, life habitat and a science module. This would enable the station to host up to 10 people, initially.
Genesis Engineering Solution, an aerospace and technology provider, would supply single-person spacecraft on the station, allowing those on board to go on spacewalks.
Less than a week before the Orbital Reef announcement, Nanoracks had unveiled plans of a commercial space station that would aid efforts in scientific research and tourism.
Founded in 2009, Nanoracks is a commercial space company that has sent more than 1,300 research payloads and small satellites to the ISS.
Now, it has gone into partnership with Voyager Space, a company into space exploration, and aerospace firm Lockheed Martin to build its first free-flying space station, called Starlab.
It would include a large inflatable habitat, designed and built by Lockheed Martin, a metallic docking node, a power and propulsion element, a robotic arm for servicing cargo and payloads, a laboratory to host research, science and manufacturing capabilities.
Up to four astronauts would be able to occupy the station. The company hopes to begin operations by 2027.
Space infrastructure company Axiom is planning to launch a commercial module to the ISS that would become its own independent station once the ISS retires.
The station will offer access to researchers, astronauts and tourists. By 2028, the Axiom modules would be ready to detach from the ISS, allowing microgravity research, manufacturing and life support testing.
The first two modules that will be launched would each have four crew quarters.
Axiom also plans to launch the first paying crew to the ISS next year.
Nasa has ambitious plans to build a station in the Moons orbit.
Called the Lunar Gateway, the station would host astronauts before they land on the lunar surface, using a human landing system.
It is part of the space agencys deep space exploration plans, which includes building a sustainable human presence on the Moon under the Artemis programme, and sending astronauts to Mars from there in future.
Plans for the Gateway includes a Habitation and Logistic Outpost, an initial crew cabin that would offer astronauts basic life support and space to prepare for their trip to the lunar surface.
Nasa chose SpaceX to deliver cargo and other supplies to the station.
Earlier this year, China and Russia unveiled plans to build the International Lunar Research Station.
The proposal involves sending several Chinese and Russian missions to the Moon over a 15-year period.
Rendering of International Lunar Research Station revealed by Chinese and Russian space officials during the third day of the Global Space Exploration Conference in St Petersburg, Russia in June.
Five facilities and nine modules are planned for the station, intended to support long and short missions to the Moon's surface and orbit.
The plan includes a facility that would support round-trip transfer between Earth and the Moon, lunar orbiting, soft landing, take-off on lunar surface and re-entry to Earth.
A long-term support facility on the surface will include a command centre, energy and supply modules, and thermal management.
Designs also include a hopping robot and smart mini-rovers that would move around the surface of the Moon.
The plan is to launch six missions by 2025 during phase one of the stations construction.
It was reported that China is also working on a lander for human Moon missions.
China has astronauts in low Earth orbit who live on Tianhe, the core cabin module of its Tiangong space station.

Love in the Berkshires: Arlo Guthrie celebrates Thanksgiving in Washington with his ‘bride-to-be’ – Berkshire Eagle
Posted: at 5:10 am
WASHINGTON Retired folk singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie is getting married again, but not before he celebrates a quiet Thanksgiving in the Berkshires.
Arlo Guthrie and longtime girlfriend Marti Ladd plan to marry in Florida.
He announced on Facebook that he would be spending the holiday at his home in Washington with only his "bride-to-be," his longtime girlfriend, Marti Ladd.
"Its not every year I get married," he wrote. "So this year instead of getting together with large groups of family and friends, my bride-to-be and I are going to celebrate Thanksgiving alone at a candlelight dinner to be thankful for each other. I wish everyone a joyful holiday however youre able to celebrate."
In October, Guthrie told a local newspaper in Sebastian, Fla., that he would marry Ladd. He said he had been with her for almost a decade, a relationship that blossomed after the death of his first wife, Jackie Guthrie.
We first met about 20 years ago when I went to Woodstock, New York with my wife Jackie to do a film," Guthrie told Sebastian Daily. "We were put up at The Wild Rose Inn. Marti Ladd was the owner/operator. Our friendship developed into a relationship after Jackie passed away in 2012. In September 2016, Marti sold the Inn and moved in with me in my home in Sebastian."
Guthrie has taken refuge at his Washington home throughout the coronavirus pandemic, according to Sebastian Daily, but he plans to get married in Florida.
Not familiar with Arlo Guthrie? Here's what you need to know about the Berkshires homeowner.
Guthrie is a political activist and folk singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. He's best known for "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", a satirical talking blues song from 1967. In the protest song, Guthrie describes his own arrest and conviction for dumping trash illegally during Thanksgiving break a conviction that later got him out of the draft for the Vietnam War.
The song, which is more than 18 minutes long, propelled Guthrie's career, and he went on to play at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Woodstock Festival. Throughout his time touring, Guthrie played with numerous musicians, from Pete Seeger to Emmylou Harris to Willie Nelson. In 2020, he announced his retirement from touring.
"Alice's Restaurant" became a popular counterculture song. Guthrie himself endorsed resisting the draft, though he would later describe the song not as anti-war so much as anti-stupidity.
In his early years of performing, his political positions were largely anti-war, anti-Nixon and pro-drugs. He then registered Republican in 2008 and supported Rep. Ron Paul of Texas for the 2008 Republican Party nomination.
During the 2016 election he identified himself as an independent. Later on in the Trump presidency he declared he was "not a Republican" and said he disagreed with Trump policies, especially on immigration.
"I left the party years ago and do not identify myself with either party these days," he wrote to Urban Milwaukee in 2018. "I strongly urge my fellow Americans to stop the current trend of guilt by association, and look beyond the party names and affiliations, and work for candidates whose policies are more closely aligned with their own, whatever they may be.

Buffalo-area familys films yield treasure trove of memories for all – WGRZ.com
Posted: at 5:10 am
The films capture images people, places, and traditions from Buffalos heyday, which stand as memories still cherished by many.
BUFFALO, N.Y. Films produced and images captured by a home movie buff from South Buffalo generations ago are now being enjoyed thanks to the effort of his grandson.
Paul Kimaid owned the Kimaid and Mattar clothing store on Seneca Street until it closed in the 1980s. But along with running a business and raising a family, he had passion for filmmaking.
Every birthday party, every graduation, every Christmas, recalled Kimaids daughter, Betty Romeo, of her father and his ever-present film camera.
Kimaid bought his first camera in the 1940s, and while film cameras were common among families during the post-World War II era to capture lifes special moments, Kimaid took to his hobby with zeal.
He filmed events around South Buffalo and produced several short films starring members of his family during the 1950s, long before anyone thought of reality TV.
The genres included comedies, mysteries and dramas.
It just became his passion, recalled Romeo. And we kids were just used to always being on camera.
She also remembered that her father won several awards from regional film clubs for his efforts.
Every time we woke up in the morning and there was a new trophy on the mantel, we knew hed won another, she said.
The Cecil B. DeMille of South Buffalo
He would feed us the lines to say as he was about to film, recalled Robert Kimaid, Pauls oldest son. "He was like the script writer, producer, director, and the camera man.
Robert says that after his father shot the reels of film, he would send them off to the Eastman Kodak company in Rochester to be developed, and that when they returned, the real work would begin.
Then he would edit it and do the splicing and moving things around, making it the way he wanted it, Robert said.
Some of the films were up 17 minutes in length.
Remembering the clunky equipment and lights his dad would use, Robert quipped, hed be absolutely amazed by what you can do with a cell phone today.
Its fun to watch the progression of how his talent grew and the quality of the productions changed and grew to improve over the years, said John Romeo, Bettys son and Paul Kimaids grandson.
Romeo, who owns a video production and graphic design firm in Virginia, embarked on an effort to collect all the films, which had become scattered in the basements and attics of various family members over the years following his grandfathers death in 1989, and to sort, digitize, and then upload them on a YouTube channel to preserve them and make them accessible to his family.
The channelPaul Kimaid Presents currently includes 122 films.
I honestly didnt think thered be much interest in these outside of my family, Romeo said. But the response Ive gotten from friends and even strangers who are finding this stuff is that theyre just blown away by it. People are connecting with this family even though it's not theirs.
Now in their golden years, the Kimaid children, who all live within a mile of each other in Orchard Park, realize that while they were once the stars of the show, that may no longer be true.
The attraction, they believe, is what anyone viewing the films now sees around them.
There are vintage shots of downtown Buffalo and other parts of the city when it was in its heyday, and had more than a half-million residents.
I think its just the history you see, said Ron Kimaid, the youngest of Paul's three children.
You can take, for example, a film from 1953 and youre like, Holy cow! Look at that car. Look at that stove, look at that refrigerator. I remember that toy.Things like that are precious to people.
Indeed, because anyone watching these films from a bygone era might not be just looking at the Kimaid family.
They may be looking at their own.
And they may be remembering the times (as captured in the Kimaid films) when their favorite uncle came home from serving overseas, or a trip to Crystal Beach on the Candiana to ride the Comet, or dancing the jitter bug at the annual South Buffalo Days in a poodle skirt and saddle shoes.
"I think that people can identify with those movies and identify in their own life," Betty said. And I think that everyone has those has those memories somewhere in the past and they can relate to it when they see it.
It is memories which bind families over time, especially around the holidays, whether those memories were made in an old house that still stand in South Buffalo, or in any one of a million others like it across America.
Captured in time through the passion, and the lens, of a long ago fellow named Paul Kimaid.
