Doctor Horrified by That Pivotal Scene in "Sex and the City" Reboot – Futurism

Posted: December 15, 2021 at 9:49 am

Spoilers abound for the shock ending of the first episode of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That

A cardiologist has affirmed what every Sex and the City fan suspected after watching the end of the first episode of the reboot And Just Like That:Carrie Bradshaw just may have committed manslaughter on her husband.

To recap, Mr. Big,played by Chris Noth, dies of a heart attack at the end of the episode while Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, stares on in horror and does nothing for a conspicuous period of time.

In an interview with enterprising Vulture reporter Rachel Handler, Chicagos Rush University Medical Center cardiologist Daniel Lugersaid that it was a goddamn travesty that Bradshaw allowed her husband to die of a heart attack while she dramatically screamed and cried instead of, you know, calling 911.

For all the barely-concealed spoilers about the death in the finale which infamously happened after Mr. Big, ne John James Preston, took a spin on his Peloton stationary bike so far, there hasnt been much about the medical science behind what happened.

In theVulture interview, Luger said that some of the specifics of Mr. Bigs death, such as the characters penchant for cocktails, cigars, and big steaks in the aftermath of his canonical angioplasty during the shows original run, would likely be considered very unhealthy if a real-life patient did them. Indeed, the character is seen puffing away on a stogie prior to that final Peloton ride.

But others, such as the implication that the exercise he got from taking a ride on his Peloton catalyzed his coronary, seem about as fictitious as Bradshaws ability to survive in Manhattan on a columnists salary in the first seasons of Sex and the City.

Its not unrealistic that he would exercise and then have a heart attack, Luger toldVulture. Exercise slightly increases your risk of having a cardiac event, but we encourage all patients with coronary disease to exercise, because the risks of having an event are low and the benefits are much higher.

Peloton, as the interviewer noted, responded to the brouhaha over the play-acted death of a fictional character by noting that said character lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in Season 6.

These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death, the company said in a statement.Riding his Peloton bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event.

More shocking than Mr. Bigs death, however, was how Carrie responded to coming home to find her husband clearly ill but not yet dead: by wasting a ton of time on her usual melodramatics that should have been spent calling an ambulance from a nearby hospital to come to their fancy Fifth Avenue home.

If he was in the hospital or if EMS was at his side when that happened, they could absolutely shock him out of that rhythm, Luger told Vulture. Thats a very treatable problem in the hospital setting.

Letting Big die was absolutely Carries fault, the good doctor toldHandler.

This is a PSA: If you see somebody lose consciousness, the first thing you do is feel for a pulse, Luger added. If theres no pulse, you call EMS and start chest compressions without delay. You can definitely save peoples lives that way.

He didnt need to die, the cardiologist added. This is a goddamn travesty.

And just like that Carrie may have lost her chance to save her husband.

Elon Musk Is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2021 – Futurism

Posted: at 9:49 am

"Lately, Elon Musk also likes to live-tweet his poops."And The Winner Is

Its official: Elon Musk is Time Magazines Person of the Year.

The Tesla CEO received the illustrious designation on Monday. This year, he also joined the likes of Simone Biles, who was named athlete of the year, and vaccine scientists, who were named heroes of the year, in the magazines annual issue that profiles people, groups, and ideas that have had the most influence on the world.

He dreams of Mars as he bestrides Earth, square-jawed and indomitable, the magazine said in the accompanying feature story. Lately, Elon Musk also likes to live-tweet his poops.

The billionaire meme poster took part in a wide-ranging interview as part of the issue. He covered a range of topics including the reason behind his semi-separated relationship with baby mama Claire Elise Grimes Boucher.

We werent seeing each other that much, because what she needs to do is mostly in LA or touring, and my work is mostly in remote locations like this, Musk said to the magazine. Im human and all; Im not a robot, but this place is basically a techno monastery.

He also gave an intriguing glimpse into his stance as a utopian anarchist who wants to give people unfettered access to any goods or services that they want.

If we have a highly automated future with the robots that can do anything, then any work you do will be because you want to do it, not because you have to do it, he said. I dont mean to suggest chaos, but rather that youre not under anyones thumb.

It should be noted that the magazine awards Person of the Year to people who have had the most influence in society in a particular year for better or for much, much worse.

Still, that probably wont stop Musk from using the magazine cover as yet another thing to lord over Jeff Bezos.

Paul Gosar, Welcome to the Hypocrite Hall of Fame – Democrats.org

Posted: at 9:36 am

The DNC War Room is pleased to welcome Arizonas Paul Gosar into our American Rescue Plan Hypocrite Hall of Fame, where he will join the likes of Ron DeSantis, Kim Reynolds, and other Republicans who have shamelessly tried to take credit for funding they opposed. While Rep. Gosar might now be pleased that an airport in his district is receiving American Rescue Plan funds, back in March he called the legislation a spending bonanza that Americans should be furious about.

We would extend an invitation to Rep. Gosars siblings to witness his Hypocrite Hall of Fame induction, but theyve alreadymade clearthey want nothing to do with him.

The evidence is clear: Paul Gosar is a hypocrite who is trying to take credit for a bill he vehemently opposed and used every tool at his disposal to defeat.

Rolling Stone: Paul Gosar Takes Credit for Covid Funding He Bashed as a Democrat Spending Bonanza

MSNBC: Paul Gosar seeks credit for relief funds he fought to defeat

Roll Calls Niels Lesniewski: Rep. Gosar is touting federal aid from the American Rescue Plan going to help with COVID-related airport sanitization.

NBCs Sahil Kapur: Rep. Paul Gosar celebrates a federal grant to an Arizona city to fight Covid under the American Rescue Plan. The congressmans statement includes a quote from the mayor thanking him for his support. UNMENTIONED: Gosar voted against the legislation.

CNNs Ryan Nobles: Paul Gosar in Feb: Cut everything in the American Rescue Plan but $10k checks. Gosar today:This funding is essential to maintaining safe and reliable air service to the community.

Arizona Republics Laurie Roberts: Funny thing. Gosar wasnt so pleased when the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 passed. In fact, he voted against the bill. Twice. Do you suppose hes forgotten those votes, taken in February and March? Or that hes just hoping the rest of us have?

MSNBC: Its clear Gosar is just a two-faced politician whose self-serving hypocrisy explains, in part, why his own siblings revile him.

Senate membership shows how the parties have changed – Roll Call

Posted: at 9:36 am

ANALYSIS Like the start of the 107th Congress, which began Jan. 3, 2001, and ended Jan. 3, 2003, todays Senate (the 117th Congress) is split between the two parties. In 2001, Republican George W. Bush entered the White House with his party in control of the chamber, thanks to Vice President Dick Cheneys tie-breaking vote. Now, Joe Biden is president, and his party controls the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaker.

But while the party affiliations in 2001-2003 and 2021-2023 are similar, the two parties look dramatically different from a mere two decades ago. Sixteen senators of that 107th Congress six Republicans and 10 Democrats are still in office. Except for one obvious exception (Maines Susan Collins), the Republicans in that group are and have been very conservative, while the Democrats are and have been very liberal.

Besides Collins, the five other GOP senators still serving are Alabamas Richard C. Shelby, Idahos Michael D. Crapo, Iowas Charles E. Grassley, Kentuckys Mitch McConnell and Oklahomas James M. Inhofe. On the Democratic side, theres Californias Dianne Feinstein, Delawares Thomas R. Carper, New Yorks Charles E. Schumer, Illinois Richard J. Durbin, Michigans Debbie Stabenow, Oregons Ron Wyden, Rhode Islands Jack Reed, Vermonts Patrick J. Leahy, and both of Washingtons senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.

Republicans often talk about how much more liberal the Democratic Party has become, and it certainly is true that in the 2001-2003 Senate, at least six Democratic senators could be classified as conservative or moderate Arkansas Blanche Lincoln, Georgias Zell Miller, Nebraskas Ben Nelson, Indianas Evan Bayh, Louisianas John B. Breaux and South Carolinas Ernest F. Hollings.

Today, only West Virginias Joe Manchin III falls into the moderate-to-conservative Democratic category, though a few others, such as Arizonas Kyrsten Sinema, can cause heartburn for progressive Democrats on individual issues.

Bill Kelliher reveals Ron Woods signature ESP as his secret studio weapon: Its the best-sounding Tele ever – Guitar World

Posted: at 9:36 am

Since signing with ESP Guitars in 2016, Bill Kelliher has been mostly sighted playing his signature BK-600 and Sparrowhawk designs, but it turns out the Mastodon riff machine has an affinity for another, more unlikely, model in the Japanese companys catalog: Ron Woods signature ESP.

In a new interview with Total Guitars Amit Sharma, Kelliher explains how the Tele-esque electric guitar ended up handling many of the clean tones on blockbuster new album Hushed and Grim.

One of my secret weapons in the studio is a Ron Wood ESP, he explains. Its a Telecaster with a humbucker and its the best-sounding Tele ever, so warm and still twangy. I used that a lot because I knew any time I needed that sound, it would always work better than anything else.

The Ron Wood model is one of the more traditional offerings in ESPs lineup, built for the Rolling Stones guitarist, and featuring ESP own-design humbucker and single-coil pickups.

Other models Kelliher employed throughout the making of the record include his ESP Sparrowhawks now featuring new Mojotone Hellbender pickups and a black 2007 Gibson Les Paul.

Elsewhere in the interview, the guitarist dished out more info on the mystery ESP double-cut that appeared in a promo for his signature STL ToneHub Pack last month.

Theres an ESP called the Royal Shiva which hasnt come out yet but its pretty much an exact replica of my First Act nine-string, he reveals. Its super-thick at the neck and weighs about 13 pounds... Its the fuckin heaviest guitar ever! Ive been playing it live and it was in the studio, with a set of my Hellbender pickups.

Head to Magazines Direct to pick up a copy of the latest issue of Total Guitar, which features the full interview with Kelliher, as well as a rundown of the 50 greatest Beatles guitar songs, Santana and Trivium interviews, plus tabs of songs by Free, Biffy Clyro, Extreme and Passenger.

‘The Office’: Paul Rudd Said the Show Would ‘Never Be as Good’ as the British Version; Why Steve Carell Played Michael Scott Anyway – Showbiz Cheat…

Posted: at 9:36 am

One of Steve Carells most iconic roles is Michael Scott inThe Office. Ironically, several people told Carellnotto audition for the NBC series, includingThe Shrink Next Dooractor Paul Rudd. Find out what Rudds advice was to Carell when he was getting ready to audition for the American version ofThe Office. Plus, why Carell stuck with the role despite Rudds advice and critics negative reviews.

Rudd and Carell are both successful actors. But before Carell became known for playing Michael Scott and Rudd was dubbed Sexiest Man Alive, the two starred in the 2004 comedyAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

The Officedebuted in 2005, and when they were working together onAnchorman, Carell discussed auditioning for Michael Scott with Rudd. The British version of the show was a huge hit, but Rudd didnt think Carell auditioning for the American version was a smart career move.

Carell remembers talking to Rudd about auditioning for the American version ofThe Office. He goes, Dont do it,' Carell told Kevin Malone actor Brian Baumgartner onThe Office Deep Dive. Bad, bad move, dude. Its never going to be as good.

Ultimately, Carell went through with the audition. He was up againstBetter Call Saulstar Bob Odenkirk, but casting director Allison Jones opted for Carells take on the role.

During his conversation with Baumgarnter, Carell went on to say it was a miracleThe Officelasted the first and second season. There wasnt a lot of confidence in the show for a long time, Carell said. Despite Rudds advice and, later, a lack of love from critics, Carell continued playing the role of Michael Scott.

Reviews for the pilot episode ofThe Officewerent great. Where Ricky Gervais let the boss insecurities show through, Steve Carell is all noise and stupidity, Baumgartner read, citing one critics opinion. Hes like a sketch comedy character.

Carell said he and the rest of the cast disagreed with the early reviews. I think we felt like we were on to something, theSpace Forceactor said. And it wasnt the British version. It was something unto itself based on all of the components that were making it up.

Carell credited producer Greg Daniels for choosing the right people for the show. One of his great talents is choosing people who have chemistry professionally and personally everybody got along, Carell said. We loved each other on that show. The connection with his fellow cast and the confidence they shared knowing they were doing something good and something of value ignited Carells passion for the role.

Rudd wasnt the first person to tell Carell bringingThe Officeto America was a bad idea. But he was wrong and continues to be.

The Officewas one of the most-streamed shows in 2020, which inspired Baumgartner to start two podcasts:An Oral History of The Officeand, later,The Office Deep Dive. Both have been well-received by fans who love the nostalgic look behind the scenes. TheOfficeactor also released a book in November 2021 titledWelcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office.

Nice weather for sledding or shoveling snow; south and east metro had highest totals – MPR News

Posted: at 9:36 am

Parked vehicles are buried under well over a foot of snow on Saturday morning, Dec. 11, 2021 in South St. Paul, Minn.

Andrew Krueger | MPR News

It was a real dumping of snow in the south and east portions of the Twin Cities metro area Friday afternoon into Friday night.

A nearly-stationary band of heavy snow was parked over those areas for several hours Friday evening, with snowfall rates of around 2 inches per hour. The snow was fluffy, with a snow-to water ratio of about 16.6 to 1, which helped those snow totals grow quickly.

Snow totals

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport had a storm total of 11.8 inches. I saw 18 inch snowfall reports from Eagan and Rosemount. 18.9 inches in Inver Grove Heights, 19 in Lakeville and 17.7 in Jordan. One observer in Woodbury had 20 inches, and there was a report of 21 inches from the east side of St. Paul. My tally in St. Paul was 10.2 inches. I saw a report of 8.1 inches in southwest Minneapolis and 6 inches in Excelsior. Elk River, on the northwest side of the metro area, tallied just 3.5 inches of new snow.

This is how the NWS 24-hoursnow maplooked at 10 a.m. Saturday:

Good cleanup weather

The storm system is moving away, leaving us with plenty of sunshine for shoveling, plowing or playing in the snow.

Paul Sullivan: Minnie Mioso’s Hall of Fame election was long overdue but it hurts knowing the Chicago White Sox legend was deprived of experiencing…

Posted: at 9:36 am

Theres always a twinge of sadness when a player gets elected into the Hall of Fame after his death, as was the case recently with former Chicago White Sox legend Minnie Mioso.

Youre thrilled Mioso finally made it after all these years but cant help thinking about how excited he would have been reacting to the news.

Dont tell me that maybe Ill get in after I pass away, Mioso told baseball writer Christina Kahrl in 2015. I dont want it to happen after I pass. I want it while Im here because I want to enjoy it.

No one wouldve have enjoyed it more than Mioso, who knew he was deserving but refused to campaign for himself. And he didnt want to complain when he fell short. After failing to make it on the 2011 Veterans Committee ballot, Mioso tried to put on a good face.

Even if it hurts on the inside, I will always be smiling on the outside, he said.

Im sure it mustve hurt even more three years later. Mioso had one more chance to get in while he was alive but fell short in 2014, being named on eight of the 15 ballots. Former Sox slugger Dick Allen had 11 votes that year, and Minnesota Twins great Tony Oliva also had 11, both falling one short.

No one was elected, and Mioso died the following year. After the 2020 Golden Era ballot was postponed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mioso gained six votes on the 2021 ballot, finishing with 14 from the 16-member committee. He joined Oliva, Gil Hodges and Jim Kaat as inductees for the Class of 2022.

So what changed?

The committee members were different, which helped his cause, and his supporters made a convincing case for his candidacy.

Ron Santo had the same feelings as Mioso about the Hall of Fame late in his life. Santo was denied on four Veterans Committee ballots and was crushed every time. The phone call telling him he didnt make it in 2003 turned into a pivotal scene in This Old Cub, a documentary by his filmmaker son, Jeff Santo.

And after Santo fell nine votes shy in a 2008 vote by the 64 living Hall of Famers, he had had enough.

Im just kind of fed up with it, Santo said afterward. I figure, hey, its not in the cards. But I dont want to go through this every two years. Its ridiculous.

Santo repeatedly told friends he had no interest in making it to the Hall posthumously. But he died in 2010, and one year later, on Dec. 5, 2011, Santo was named on 15 of the 16 ballots of the Golden Era committee.

Afterward, former Cubs teammate Billy Williams said the committee pointed to his numbers but also discussed his off-the-field merits, including raising more than $60 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Some people brought out other than numbers on Ron Santo, what he did in community, Williams said. Everyone saw the numbers the home runs (342) and Gold Gloves (5), but I think they looked at it with a different view this guy should be in the Hall of Fame. When you get 15 out of 16 votes, a lot of people saw him in a different light.

Im not sure if the 2021 committee saw Mioso in a different light than the one in 14. But MLBs decision to acknowledge the Negro League as a major league in 2021 meant Miosos major-league totals increased.

Mioso had 147 hits added to his numbers, pushing him past the 2,000-hit mark with 2,110. It might also have helped to have former Commissioner Bud Selig, a friend of Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, on the 2021 committee pushing for him.

Either way, most observers expected Mioso would get in this time, and they were right. It still doesnt make up for Mioso being overlooked when he was alive. He was deprived of the Hall of Fame experience, from learning of the selection to giving a speech in Cooperstown, N.Y., to the simple pleasure of being greeted as a Hall of Famer.

Minnie was very humble when it came to something like this, his wife, Sharon, said after the announcement. Honestly, I know Minnie would have cried. He was a sentimental guy and very humble and never felt he deserved special recognitions. As (his son) Charlie and I did, it was tears of joy.

While the Mioso family celebrates the good news, the family of Dick Allen is trying to get over the pain of watching him fall one vote shy for the second straight election following the near-miss in 2014. Allen told me in a phone interview in November 2020 that the Hall of Fame was not on his mind.

I never really cared about it, he said. When youre a kid and youre playing ball around the house, youre not playing ball because youre thinking of the Hall of Fame. Youre thinking of making it to the major leagues. The big leagues. First things first. I really dont get it. To me, thats all (up to) the voting. After all is said and done, its what people thought of you after you leave. And after I left, it was only what the sports writers thought of me, not what people thought of me.

Allen was in bad health at the time and died a month later. His chances of making it this year seemed better thanks to national baseball writers such as Jay Jaffe and Jayson Stark advocating for his induction based on metrics that were around during Allens playing days.

Falling one vote short again dealt his family another blow. Because committee members are not required to reveal their votes publicly, none had to explain why they did or did not vote for an individual. This spares the committee members the criticism that Baseball Writers Association of America voters often receive when they reveal their Hall of Fame ballots every winter.

Well never know why some voters neglected to check Allens name or why they thought he was unworthy of the honor, just as we never knew why Mioso, Santo and Allen were deemed unworthy in previous voting. For the sake of transparency, that needs to change.

This one hurt worse than 2014, maybe because it happened twice and by the same amount of votes, Allens son, Dick Allen Jr., told Tribune reporter Meghan Montemurro. I didnt even know what to say. ... To be honest, I was really angry the rest of the night. I mean, I had visions of taking something and throwing it across the room.

Hopefully some day Allen will be selected, and his family and friends will get a chance to celebrate his life and career in Cooperstown, just as well be celebrating Mioso in July.

The rest is here:

‘It was the best decision I made’: Needy Fund helps single mother with car repairs, rent – Cape Cod Times

Cape Cod Times Staff| Cape Cod Times

This single, 26-year-old motherremembers vividly the day she realized she could not stay with her boyfriend. It was too scary.

"The hotline scoured the entire state looking for a shelter that could accommodate me and my (child)," she said. "I thought I might end up in Pittsfield or Chelsea, but they eventually found a family shelter on the South Shore.

After spending six months in the shelter, she was able to find a permanent place to live in Eastham, where she now lives.

It is an awful lot for a young mother to try to make a normal life for her young child, who is shuttled back and forth between parents on weekends under court order at least for the time being.

A court-appointed guardian currently is investigating the case, including home visits to both parents, before making a final recommendation that she hopes can begin to normalize their lives.

In the meantime, she lives week-to-week trying to make ends meet all the more complicated by court and guardian expenses and child support payments that don't arrive on time.

A friend suggested she contact the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund. I was hesitant at first … but it was the best decision I made at the time.

"I called them up one day when I was really feeling down. Even working, I couldn't meet all my bills without the child support," she said. "They listened carefully and made me feel like I had a friend on the other end of the line."

She emailed herapplication and all herbills to the Needy Fund, where they were studied before providing financial assistance.

The woman's lawyer paid for the gas needed to drive her child to her father's home on the weekends, but hercar needed repairs.

The Needy Fund paid for one month's rent, which enabled her to buy newtires and get her brakes repairedso her carcould pass inspection.

"I am very fortunate that I have found myself here. The Cape has welcomed me," she said."I have never felt so much a part of a community as I do now. And the Needy Fund is a big piece of that."

She now is forging a more entrepreneurial path in her own business.

I have to cultivate my own clientele, but it gives me some sense of control over my life," she said.

Many human service agenciesoffer assistance tothose in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.

No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.
