BMW Shows Off Car That Changes Color at the "Touch of a Button" – Futurism
Posted: January 9, 2022 at 4:34 pm
"Perfect for when you need to lose your stars."Changing Colors
Heres something wild we didnt expect to see at this years CES convention in Las Vegas: an electric BMW that can literally change the color of its paint job with the press of a button.
A video thats gone viral on Reddit shows a sleek SUV puttering around a parking lot when it suddenly switches its exterior color from a pearl white to a medium gray in an instant. Oddly enough, the charging port cover stayed white, while the rest of the vehicle darkened.
A different video shared on Twitter shows swirls of grey move across the vehicle like a dark cloud.
Sure, its a bit gimmicky but CES is all about gimmicks. And the feature may have other uses, too.
Perfect for when you need to lose your stars, one Reddit user chimed in, referring to the wanted level in the video game franchise Grand Theft Auto.
In December, BMW issued a statement that it will show off the first-ever demonstration of a technology that changes the exterior color of a vehicle with the touch of a button, but didnt elaborate on what that would look like or how it would work at the time.
One Twitter user suggested that the color-changing tech could involve a temperature sensitive finish, but BMW has yet to comment.
Only a few people will be able to see the car in person, thanks to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
Out of an abundance of caution, BMW will move all planned media activities at CES to a fully online program from Germany on January 5, reads a statement from BMW.
While were still not entirely clear on how the carmaker managed to pull off the chameleon paint job, were pretty certain on one thing: this vehicle will be turning a lot of heads at CES this year, given the hype on social media.

Study Finds That People Who Believe COVID Myths Are More Likely to Catch COVID – Futurism
Posted: at 4:34 pm
In a grim finding, a team of scientists say that people who believe myths about COVID are more likely to catch it.
Community transmission rates drop when government entities impose restrictions, Ohio State University researcher Russell Fazio told PsyPost in a new interview about a study he helped publish back in October of 2021. But the very persons who engage in more social distancing behavior decrease their personal likelihood of contracting COVID-19. [We] took this a step further, examining beliefs and personal characteristics that predicted whether individuals contracted the virus.
Study participants completed assessments for variables including pandemic perceptions, faith in government, belief in science, conspiratorial ideas and more. As it turns out, those with a strong trust of former President Trump, more government faith and more conspiracy theory beliefs were more likely to contract COVID, according to the studys findings.
There are many important findings from this research, but the most critical one may be related to misinformation regarding COVID, Fazio told PsyPost. Individuals with more accurate knowledge were far less likely to have contracted [it].
The solution to these problems, though, may not lie in political evangelism and trying to sway COVID deniers to the other side of an ideological spectrum.
Instead, a less political and more empathetic approach may be a much more effective way to reduce COVID cases and deaths, which should really be everyones end goal.
It would be fascinating to examine the consequences of correcting any misinformation that people had acquired regarding the virus, Fazio told PsyPost. Whether changes in accurate knowledge results in changes in the likelihood of contracting the virus is an important question that needs to be addressed.
In other words, in the fight against COVID, preventing hospital stays matters more than changing votes. So letting people know that their leaders failed them in an empathetic way, and not holding them personally responsible for those failings, may prove most effective.
After all, if individual action can make you vulnerable to COVID transmission, surely the reverse is true, too.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 hauls us into a bright retro-future as the smartest EV on the market
Hyundai Ioniq 5 is retro-futurism made flesh, fulfilling the neon dreams of the forward-thinking 1970s its also easy to live with, efficient and practical
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 wears its retro influences on its sleeve, but in truth there were never really cars like this on the road. The closest parallels to the faceted forms in Hyundais newest EV can be found in the concept car designs of the 1970s and 1980s, back when futurism meant sharp edges. In particular, the jumping off point was Giorgetto Giugiaros 1974 Hyundai Pony Coup concept, shown at the Turin Motor Show. The Ioniq 5 is the production version of the Hyundai 45 Concept, featured in our 2020 Design Awards for its combination of excellent exterior, intelligent interior design, and eco-conscious engineering.
Not only is the Ioniq 5 substantially different from the companys EV offerings to date, its also pretty different from other companies offerings (including Hyundais sister company Kia). Inside and out, the Ioniq 5 is retro-futurism made flesh, fulfilling the neon dreams of the forward-thinking 1970s as a mass-produced object without the barriers of badge snobbery or brand hierarchy.
You see, way back before retro was cool, companies like Hyundai were comfortable in their unfashionable skin, letting premium brands duke it out for the title of best-looking car. Time and taste have been surprisingly kind to the resolutely ordinary cars built by the Korean manufacturer in the 1970s and 1980s.
Giugiaros original 1974 concept still looks relatively fresh, and in April 2021 the Pony was given a retromod makeover, complete with modern pixel-style lights and a dashboard made from Nixie tubes. It was followed by an all-electric make-over of the stately Grandeur saloon from 1986.
Hyundai Heritage Series Pony
The latter two cars are part of the companys Heritage Series, a canny way of bolstering the credibility of the past through the lens of the future. Consumers often have a nostalgic longing for the lost powers of perception and imagination in old-fashioned futurology. Hyundais design team are tapping into these emotions with a (relatively) straight face; the Grandeur is video game design made real, a clever way of splicing modern EV tech into old forms.
The wider point here is that electrification offers designers far more freedom than ever before. Ultimately, cars will evolve even further, but the underlying promise of such electrified retromods is that there may just be life in the billions of soon-to-be-discarded conventional cars, if only their drivetrains could be swapped out for batteries.
Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur
The Ioniq 5 isnt quite as blatant an homage, but it is still extremely striking, quite unlike anything else on the road. In the metal, its much larger than the compact hatchback-style body shape suggests, but the scale lends the interior an airy spaciousness that is missing from so many modern cars.
Outside, the folded, crimped, and ribbed bodywork is far more sophisticated than the machine-made forms of the 1970s and 1980s. This is a tad fussy in places (especially in comparison with the original 45 Concept), but the overall effect is handsome, well-proportioned and different. The pixelated lights, front and rear, create presence and visual interest, while the clean relationship between the light clusters, bodywork and glasshouse is the very definition of crisp.
Inside, the space makes the most of Hyundais new Electric-Global Modular Platform, which also serves as the underpinnings for the closely related but very physically different Kia EV6. The dashboard successfully blends flat screens with conventional controls, while there are no overwrought curves or scoops anywhere to be found.
The interior of the Hyundai Ioniq 5
On the road, the Ioniq 5 demonstrates all the best EV driving qualities, swift acceleration, stable, grounded handling, and simple one-pedal operation. The bigger capacity battery (73kWh versus 58kWh) promises a range of around 300 miles, and a (scarce) ultra-fast charger will get you from 10 to 80 per cent charge in under 20 minutes.
It is a very easy car to live with, characterful without being overbearingly charismatic, efficient without being clinical, and practical without being dull. We look forward to future Ioniq models with keen anticipation.

Chinas First Emperor Ordered Official Search for …
Posted: at 4:23 pm
The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, wanted to live forever.
Newly discovered documents reveal that 2,200 years ago, he even put out an executive order to search for a potion that would give him eternal life, Chinas Xinhua news agency reported.
Qin Shi Huang was born in 259 B.C., and by the time of his death in 210 B.C., he had conquered all six warring states of China to create a unified nation, of which he proclaimed himself emperor.
During his reign, strips of bamboo or wood known as slips were common writing materials. In 2002, more than 36,000 slips containing ancient calligraphy were discovered in an abandoned well in central China's Hunan province, according to Xinhua. [Photos: Terracotta Warriors Protect Secret Tomb]
The news agency reported that Zhang Chunlong, a researcher at the Hunan Institute of Archaeology, analyzed 48 medicine-related slips from that collection and found that the emperors decree to search for immortality potions reached frontier regions and remote villages.
"It required a highly efficient administration and strong executive force to pass down a government decree in ancient times, when transportation and communication facilities were undeveloped," Zhang told Xinhua.
The wooden slips even contained some responses from villages. One town called "Duxiang" reported back to the emperor that its inhabitants hadnt yet found the elixir of life, while another town in the modern-day Shandong Province in eastern China offered an herb from a local mountain.
Archaeologists and historians already had some idea that Qin Shi Huang was obsessed with immortality.
According to Chemistry World, the emperor was thought to have consumed cinnabar (or mercury sulfide) in the hopes it would prolong his life. As scientists know now, mercury is poisonous. Ironically, Qin Shi Huang's supposed cures may have helped bring on his death at the age of 39.
If he couldnt live forever, Qin Shi Huang wanted to at least ensure that he would be well-equipped in the afterlife. For his tomb, the emperor built a sprawling underground mausoleum thats never been excavated, though 8,000 ceramic soldiers and horses known as the Terracotta Army have been discovered since the 1970s near the burial mound.
Ancient writings claim the underground palace had a ceiling mimicking the night sky with pearls as stars and rivers of mercury. Its not clear how many of the ancient descriptions are exaggerations, though soil samples around the tomb have indicated high levels of mercury contamination.

The epic rise and fall of Theranos’s Elizabeth Holmes – The Irish Times
Posted: at 4:23 pm
Near the end of Elizabeth Holmes criminal trial, her lawyers submitted into evidence her punishing self-improvement plan.
4 a.m. Rise and thank God, the handwritten memo began. Exercise, meditation, prayer, breakfast [whey and, as she spelled it, bannanna] followed. By 6:45 a.m., a time when slackers were still fumbling for the alarm clock, she was at the office of Theranos, the blood-testing company she founded in 2003.
Holmes had many rules at Theranos: I am never a minute late. I show no excitement. ALL ABOUT BUSINESS. I am not impulsive. I know the outcome of every encounter. I do not hesitate. I constantly make decisions and change them as needed. I speak rarely. I call bullshit immediately.
It worked. Holmes resolve was so forceful, and fit so neatly into the Silicon Valley cliche of achieving the impossible by refusing to admit it was impossible, that it inspired belief right up to the moment on Monday when a jury officially convicted her of four counts of fraud.
Holmes was found guilty of four of 11 charges of fraud Monday, in a case that came to symbolise the pitfalls of Silicon Valleys culture of hustle, hype and greed.
A jury of eight men and four women took 50 hours over seven days of deliberations to reach a verdict, convicting her of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud by lying to investors to raise money for her company.
Each count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, terms that are likely to be served concurrently. Holmes (37) is expected to appeal.
The verdict signalled the end of an era. In Silicon Valley, where the line between talk and achievement is often vague, there is finally a limit to faking it.
From Stanford University dropout to Theranos $9 billion valuation to conviction, it is an epic rise and fall that will be chewed over in the coffee shops and juice bars of Palo Alto, California, until the tech industry departs for a new life in Elon Musks and Jeff Bezos off-world colonies. For a decade, Holmes fooled savvy investors, hundreds of smart employees, an all-star board and a media eager to anoint a new star even, or especially, if she had no qualifications.
Just as Silicon Valley is a cartoonish version of American notions about the virtues of hard work and getting rich quick, so Holmes was a heightened version of Silicon Valley.
As her self-improvement scheme made clear, she was trying to turn herself into a machine that had no time for anything but work. This was not for her own benefit, of course, but humanitys. She perfectly encapsulated the Silicon Valley credo that tech was here to serve us, and never mind exactly how it did it, the billions it was making or whether it even worked.
Whenever anyone a regulator, an investor, a reporter wanted to know a little more about exactly how the Theranos machines functioned, the company cried trade secrets. The real secret, of course, was that Theranos didnt have any trade secrets because its machines didnt work. But her answer worked for a long time.
Hiding fraud behind the imperatives of secrecy wasnt the only way Holmes actions were rooted in tradition. Her self-improvement plan dated back to Ben Franklin but found its most indelible expression in F Scott Fitzgeralds creation of Jay Gatsby, the mysterious, alluring, handsome millionaire who also ran a few swindles.
Gatsby was practically Holmes brother. He, too, got where he was with a schedule and rules, in his case written inside a book when he was a striving youth:
5pm-6pm: Practice elocution, poise and how to obtain it
7pm-9pm: Study needed inventions
The parallels with Holmes extended even to Gatsbys equally loose grasp of spelling. No more smokeing or chewing, he admonished himself.
Gatsby was a bootlegger but also used Wall Street to cheat. He sold fake bonds. Holmes chose Silicon Valley, the last and greatest of all human dreams. In the first decade of the century, it promised to reinvent transportation, friendship, commerce, politics, money.
Blood-testing must have seemed like a breeze by comparison, especially since Holmes was a natural salesperson, as good at bending reality as Steve Jobs himself. Here she was in an interview with the radio show Tech Nation in 2005, explaining what Theranos was all about:
We focused on creating a customised medicine tool that could be used in the home by every patient, so that every day, a patient can get real-time analysis of their blood samples.
Who could not applaud such an invention? Theranos was making a messy, uncertain and time-consuming medical process into something effortless and painless. A little teeny needle that pulls a little teeny drop of blood, she said. Software would do the rest.
Tech Nations host, Moira Gunn, has a masters degree in computer science and a doctor of philosophy in mechanical engineering, but she was dazzled. How old are you, Elizabeth? she asked.
Im 21, Holmes said.
Her age was brought up not to knock down her claims but to underline how impressive they were. Im gonna go tell my two children, they better get off their duffs, Gunn exclaimed.
Holmes said Theranos device was in the production phase. She added, We hope to release it, actually, to a pharmaceutical partner around mid-to-late this year. Thirteen years later, when the company dissolved, it had never successfully released a device.
In 2005, however, even reinventing blood testing at 21 was not enough, so deep were our expectations of genius. Holmes was asked about her future, and gave the stock Silicon Valley response: You aint seen nothing yet.
Theranos already had the next generations of its device in prototype, she said. It was miniaturised to make it even faster, to make it more high-throughput. It would be automated: You dont even have to touch your finger on the device.
So in one of the first media interviews Holmes ever did, she said Theranos had a working device that would be able to analyse your health without actually touching you. No one called her on it. No wonder she and her deputy and boyfriend, Ramesh Balwani, the companys chief operating officer known as Sunny, thought they could brazen it out in the Silicon Valley tradition until they had something that actually worked.
This is a credulous age. William Perry, a Theranos board member, was secretary of defense under President Bill Clinton, a mathematician, engineer and Stanford professor. Not, in other words, a fool with regard to Silicon Valley. Yet he told The New Yorker in 2014 that Holmes has sometimes been called another Steve Jobs, but I think thats an inadequate comparison. She has a social consciousness that Steve never had. He was a genius; shes one with a big heart.
Perry declined to comment.
Jobs, who died in 2011, might as well have been a recruiter for Theranos. Adam Rosendorff, a lab director at Theranos, testified during Holmes trial that he thought the company was going to be the next Apple. He applied for the job after reading a biography of the Apple co-founder.
The whole excitement around Steve Jobs was very compelling to me, he said. I wanted to make a more global impact on health care and I thought that joining a diagnostics company would help me do that.
Rosendorff grew disillusioned before Theranos misleading claims were exposed, but Perry stuck it out until December 2016, when the startup was forced to change its board in a futile attempt to survive.
With believers like these, Holmes dream must have seemed so close that she could hardly fail to grasp it. A couple more late nights from the engineering team, a few more magazine covers declaring her a genius, and it would be as good as done.
So where does this conviction leave the rest of us her marks, her enablers, her investors and former fans?
Ripe for the next huckster that comes along, probably. Some Silicon Valley promises are so sweet we just cant get enough of them. Immortality. Crypto. Flying cars. Mars. Digital harmony. Wealth beyond compare.
As Fitzgerald wrote, we will always be a sucker for the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. The New York Times

Lost in the storm: Novak Djokovic sees Australian Open dreams blown away – The Guardian
Posted: at 4:23 pm
Novak Djokovics hopes of returning to the Australian Open and competing for a record 21st grand slam title and a shot at tennis immortality crashed in astonishing fashion on Thursday as he was denied entrance into Melbourne, Victoria at the airport and his visa was cancelled due to insufficient evidence to support a medical exemption. His journey to that moment reveals much about him.
Towards the end of last year, as thoughts shifted to the season ahead, and players considered their participation at Melbourne Park, Djokovic gave an interview to Serbian publication Blic. He described questions about his vaccination status as inappropriate and he bemoaned the role of the media. He was pointedly direct: Your editors can take what I have just said and turn it into a scandal, he said. I do not want to be a part of that storm.
During the first week of the Australian tennis summer, the storm arrived when Djokovic announced on social media that he had received an exemption permission to travel to Australia without being vaccinated. Over the past few months, the vaccination requirements for players wishing to compete at the Australian Open have left a profound mark on the professional tours. Uptake of Covid vaccines in tennis had been extremely slow, but once the Victoria state government rules were confirmed, the rate of vaccination rose. It only made the world No 1s unresolved status more conspicuous.
While Djokovic never explicitly revealed his vaccination status, he has offered numerous indications of his stance. Long before vaccines were available, he stated his concern about having to be vaccinated in order to travel.
He has often stressed the importance of embracing natural solutions; early in the pandemic he held Instagram live conversations in which he spoke of how the power of gratitude could turn the most toxic food, or maybe most polluted water into the most healing water. After having surgery on his right elbow in 2018, a procedure that has allowed him to win nine grand slam titles since, he said that he cried for three days. His belief in alternative medicine is complemented by his commitment to alternative history. He frequently retreats to Visoko, in the hills of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he meets up with the businessman Semir Osmanagic whose claims that there are ancient man-made structures with magical healing powers, refuted by scientists, have turned the hills into a lucrative tourist destination. Djokovic has also expressed his support for the ultranationalist alternative historian Jovan Deretic, whose writings claim, among other things, that numerous European cultures, including ancient Greeks, Celts and Etruscans, are descended from Serbs.
Djokovic is unyielding in his commitment to his beliefs away from the court, however questionable they are, and that single-mindedness is also visible in his faith in the methods that have led to his on-court success.
Since the criteria for the Australian Open became clear, it always appeared that Djokovic intended to find a way to compete at the tournament, but only without compromising those beliefs.
Last year, one of the defining images of the chaotic Australian Open was the continued presence of the tournament director, Craig Tiley, on television as he managed the sudden lockdown that prevented crowds attending much of the event. After Djokovics announcement, Tiley returned to a similar role yesterday as he stressed there had been no favourable treatment for Djokovic and reinforced the strength of the medical exemption process. The exemption applications were reviewed by two independent panels of experts, one assembled by Tennis Australia and another by the Victorian government, which Tiley described as a more rigorous process than for regular citizens.
But further obstacles emerged on Tuesday, when Australias home affairs minister, Karen Andrews, said it was the federal government that would enforce our requirements at the Australian border, whatever Tennis Australia and the Victorian government might have decided about a non-vaccinated player taking part in the tournament.
Djokovic is popular with a considerable group of players due to the concern he has expressed for the lower-ranked members of the ATP Tour but, as the world No 1, he is also a clear beneficiary of the privileges afforded to top players. The cynicism that some have was reflected in comments from Jamie Murray, who suggested he does not believe he would have received an exemption, and Alex de Minaur who subtly described the subject as interesting and hoped that other applicants received the same treatment. In the end, he was sharply dealt with. The clear and simple solution for the world No 1 would have been to arrive in Australia vaccinated and without issue, but the federal government, Victoria state and Tennis Australia also shoulder significant blame for their contributions in allowing a player to travel for a full day before rejecting him at the border.
If Djokovics application was tenuous enough to be denied on arrival, the medical exemption process that was defended so stringently by Victoria State and Tennis Australia was a monumental blunder. As Djokovic was turned away and forced to grapple with his shattered dreams, one reality was difficult to escape. In this storm, everybody had lost something.

The Best Winter Skin Care Tips – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic
Posted: at 4:03 pm
When the seasons change, you switch up many things swapping cooler summer clothes for a warmer winter wardrobe, for example, or lighter dinner fare for heartier soups and stews. Unfortunately, winter also often brings about changes to your skin. Dry skin is extremely common when the weather turns colder.
Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy
Our skin traps humidity or moisture thanks to natural oils, which act as a barrier of protection and hydration. In general, dry skin is caused by a weakened skin barrier, says dermatologistAlejandra Estemalik, MD. Thereason your skin not performing as well as it should be is because theres a decrease in these natural oils, due to overwashing or using products that dry out your skin.
Dry skin symptoms can include itching, flakiness and redness, although in more severe cases, your skin can also become cracked or bleed. Thankfully, Dr. Estemalik has some tips so you dont have to spend the entire winter feeling miserable and uncomfortable in your skin.
Call it a perfect storm of environmental conditions. Not only is outside humidity lower, but cold temperatures also mean youre spending more time inside, which isnt always ideal for your skin. In winter, environmental humidity is low, says Dr. Estemalik. But were also exposed to forced air or heat, which is also going to decrease humidity indoors and cause dry skin.
Due to the natural ebb and flow of the seasons, youre also exposed to less sunlight in the winter. Besides being a good source of vitamin D, sunlight is also a natural anti-inflammatory, which can help certain health conditions.
In the summer, when youre in the pool, youre exposed to chlorine and sunscreen, which are skin irritants, says Dr. Estemalik. But youre also in the sun. In people with eczema who getflare-ups in the winter, we have them do light treatment or phototherapy because it can make their skin less itchy.
In addition to seasonal changes, genetics can factor into whether someone has dry skin. Some people have drier skin because they dont produce enough of a protein called filaggrin, which plays a role in forming and hydrating your skin barrier.
Caring for dry skin in the winter involves a combination of habit changes, product swaps and reading ingredient labels carefully.
A long, hot shower feels great when its chilly outside but, unfortunately, its not great if you have dry skin. Its cold, so everybody feels like taking a hot shower is a good remedy, says Dr. Estemalik. But overwashing will dry your skin. The heat in the water dries the oils out of your skin. However, the hot water itself will also dry your skin. The warmer water you use, the drier your skins going to be.
Dr. Estemalik recommends limiting showers to between 5 and 10 minutes, and showering every other day if youre not getting sweaty exercising. If you work out three times a week, you dont need to shower every day.
When you moisturize your skin is also key. After a shower, pat your skin dry with a towel and then immediately apply moisturizer. The function of most moisturizers is to trap moisture in your skin, says Dr. Estemalik. When you apply moisturizer on skin thats really, really dry, its not going to be that helpful because theres no moisture to trap. Applying moisturizers on damp skin is much more beneficial, especially if your skin is dry to start with.
When thinking about what products to buy, Dr. Estemalik has a good rule of thumb: The better they smell, the more irritating they are for your skin. I like to call those micro-irritations. We accumulate micro-irritations that eventually will cause your skin to be dry, itchy and cracked. Fragrance-free moisturizers, such as the old medicine cabinet standby Vaseline, are great options.
Keeping laundry day fragrance-free is also important. Detergent has fragrance, and on top of that, we use dryer sheets, says Dr. Estemalik. They make your clothes feel really clean, but theyre another irritant that comes in contact with you 24/7. Even when youre not wearing your daily clothes, youre wearing pajamas. So this is something that youre experiencing all day long.
Not all moisturizers are created equally or from the same ingredients. Lotions are much more popular because theyre easier to apply, but that doesnt necessarily mean that thats the best type of agent to moisturize your skin, says Dr. Estemalik. Lotions have a lot of alcohol and fragrance in them, both of which are irritants to the skin. But dermatologists favor creams over lotion.
For example, when looking for a cream, read the ingredient label and pick products that contain hyaluronic acid and ceramide both moisture-friendly ingredients rather than botanicals like lavender tea tree oil or coconut oil.
Some other skincare products you might use on a daily basis can also have skin-irritating ingredients. Acne medications can contain salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, while anti-aging products often contain alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid or retinol.
Using these products less frequently is one solution. Anti-aging products may work out well in the summer but the ingredients in them that help promote quick skin cell turnover may be too drying in the winter, says Dr. Estemalik. When it comes to the winter and those anti-aging products, decrease your use to three or four times a week instead of every day. The same holds true for acne medication, she adds.
Soap is known for drying out the oils in your skin. Overexfoliating can also be damaging. Especially on the face, many people will see flakiness and dryness and think, Oh, I need to exfoliate, says Dr. Estemalik. But exfoliating is super potent. It strips moisture or oils out of your skin, and will even make your skin even itchier and drier. Exfoliate once or twice a week max, she recommends.
Its very common to get dry skin on your hands. Especially in the times of COVID-19, were using lots of alcohol-containing sanitizer, she says. Thats a drying and irritating agent. You dont need to stop sanitizing just moisturize as much as you can with something that has dimethicone, a silicone-based product thats great for skin dryness.
Wear gloves when you go outdoors in the winter, as well as when youre doing something where your hands get wet, such as doing dishes or washing your car. Coming in contact with chemical greases and other harsher micro-irritants will dry out your hands, too.
Using a humidifier in the room where you sleep can help reduce the effects of spending lots of time in dry and low-humidity environments. Dr. Estemalik recommends setting the machine to between 30% and 50% humidity.
Sometimes. For example, adults over the age of 40 naturally have drier skin and should be applying moisturizer regularly. Just like your hairs not the same, your skins not the same after that age, says Dr. Estemalik. As we get older, our skin naturally produces less oil.
Seasonal shifts that dont necessarily have to do with the weather can also affect certain conditions. Dr. Estemalik says holiday stress and consuming caffeine can make rosacea worse. The anti-inflammatory condition psoriasis is also affected by a lack of sunlight. Plus, eczema can flare up and worsen in the summer because your skin is more irritated by sweat or because you swim a lot, she adds.
However, dry skin can also be a sign of a completely unrelated health condition, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney failure or a nutrition deficiency. The key to figuring out whats going on is to watch out for certain symptoms.
Look out for intense itching, says Dr. Estemalik. If your skin is getting darker in the areas where youre scratching, and if there are areas that persistently rough, flaky and red, you should visit a doctor.
Inflamed skin that starts crusting over is another red flag, as this could mean a bacterial infection. We see bacterial and viral infections in people that have eczema, says Dr. Estemalik. If your skin is red, inflamed and scaly, and on top of that you see crusting, especially if its yellow crusting, its time to go the doctor. If youre experiencing intense itching, and your skin is bleeding, its time to go to the doctor.
Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream might help in some instances. However, when in doubt, seeing a doctor is the best option. After all, there are situations when a medicated cream or lotion is the best option. I see a lot of people that think, Oh, I have eczema, and Im going to moisturize more and more, says Dr. Estemalik. Theres times when moisturizer is just not enough, and you need something medicated. You need help.

This Is What Your Skin Texture Is Saying About Your Overall Health, According To Derms – SheFinds
Posted: at 4:03 pm
While much of your skin texture and type is determined by genetics, there are some cases in which the exterior of your complexion is dictated by certain health conditions taking place inside of your body. If youve lived with dry sky most of your life and are suddenly experiencing an oilier base than usual, it may be worth looking into your overall health and taking your changing skin texture as an indication that something deeper may be going on. We checked in with board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Joshua Zeichner for a clear outline of what changing skin texture may be saying about your health status, and what you can do moving forward.

If youre experiencing excessively oily skin or an abnormal number of breakouts, Zeichner notes that this may be due to an imbalance of androgen hormones. Hormones like testosterone and its more active form DHT simulate oil glands to go into overdrive, causing excessively oily skin and acne breakouts, he explains. Women with high hormone levels often suffer from irregular periods and hair growth in areas that men typically develop it. Should you experience any significant changes in the oiliness of your skin, it may be worth checking in with a primary care doctor to make sure your hormones are healthy and in check.

On the other hand, if youre now experiencing unnaturally dry skin and flaky patches, while it may be due to the colder weather, it could also be related to changes in your internal health as well. Extremely dry skin may be the result of hypothyroidism or dietary deficiencies, warns Zeichner. Thyroid hormone helps our body regulate daily functioning and has an impact on the skin. We know that no thyroid hormone levels are associated with thinning hair and dry skin. However, another possible cause of increasingly dry skin is menopause, so taking age as a factor of your skin texture is also important before assuming your thyroid is out of whack.

Particularly sensitive skin may be just that, or an indication of an underlying potential for allergy, explains Zeichner. People with asthma, seasonal allergies, and eczema often are more at risk for developing skin allergies than other people. These allergies commonly develop after coming in contact with ingredients like fragrances or preservatives, he adds. Having or developing more sensitive skin over time is not the most concerning skincare issue at the end of the day, but staying aware of the ingredients youre using on your complexion is helpful for ensuring no further reactions develop in the future. As a general rule, eliminating fragrance from your skincare products will likely make the most significant difference in clearing up your appearance.

Reported rates of food and drink allergies rise amidst the pandemic – The Drinks Business
Posted: at 4:03 pm
A rise in self-reported rates of food and drink allergies and intolerances has occurred during the pandemic, according to a new report.
On the strength of increasing numbers and consumer awareness, the allergy friendly food and beverage market is expected to grow through 2026, stated findings from Packaging Facts latest Allergy Friendly Foods: Market Trends and Opportunities report.
According to survey data, 14% of adult respondents report having a food allergy, while 23% report being intolerant of or sensitive to certain foods, revealing that a large minority of consumers avoid certain food and drink ingredients at least some of the time.
Allergy-friendly products are the most important to consumers with diagnosed food allergies that cause allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, tingling or itching in the mouth, hives, itching, eczema, or swelling, cited the report.
Additionally, it observed how some people may think they have a food allergy or intolerance while not actually having these conditions. Some consumers also avoid certain allergens such as gluten, milk, or soy because they do not like these ingredients, think these ingredients are unhealthy, or simply have a negative perception of the ingredients. As such, the allergy-friendly food market appeals to a much broader audience than the name implies.
Opportunities for the food and drink sector can be seen with allergy-friendly products going the extra mile to emphasise when items are free from certain allergen ingredients and may have a third-party certification (such as certified gluten-free).
Products that are free from the big 8 major allergens (i.e., eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts, and wheat/gluten) are, according to the report, important to those with food allergies, as well as products that lack other common food allergens such as sesame, sulfites, mustard, and corn.
The report reiterated how allergy-friendly options are also valuable to the much larger number of people who have food and drink intolerances or sensitivities that cause unpleasant digestive symptoms such as bloating.

8 Amazing Benefits Of Hyaluronic Acid In Skincare – Salon Priv Magazine
Posted: at 4:03 pm
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in the joints, skins, and eyes responsible for moisturizing these body areas. Unfortunately, the aging process leads to the decline of this acid in the body, resulting in dry and flaky skin. On the flip side, it is also available in many other forms from topical treatments, oral tablets, injections, and the likes. Let us look into some of the key benefits of using hyaluronic acid for skincare.
Did you know that a whopping 50% of the bodys hyaluronic acid can be found on the skin? Yes, but over time, this amount reduces due to the aging process and exposure to UV radiation, leading to signs like wrinkles. Well, using products with acid can help with anti-aging properties. It reduces the depth of wrinkles by improving skin firmness and elasticity.
We all get wounded from time to time. Research has revealed that hyaluronic acid speeds up the tissue regeneration process and helps the body heal wounds faster. Applying hyaluronic acid to the skin also relieves the pain of inflammation.
The eyes are another place where you will find a high concentration of hyaluronic acid. Well, if you are experiencing dry eyes, you can use eye drops containing hyaluronic acid to ease their symptoms. Remember to speak to a doctor who will help you find out the root cause
One major benefit of hyaluronic acid skin care is skin hydration. It tends to improve skin moisture and is normally used by patients to treat dry skin. Research has revealed that individuals taking hyaluronic supplements reported a 96% increase in skin moisture only eight weeks after using the treatment.
Eczema is a skin condition that causes the skin to crack and develop patches of itchiness and inflammation. Studies have shown that patients who used the acid in the form of foam reported relief from eczema symptoms compared to other treatments containing ceramide. In other words, hyaluronic acid can reduce mild to moderate symptoms of dermatitis in patients.
The aging process, among other factors, can lead to rough skin texture. Textured skin can lead to low self-esteem among other psychological effects on some people. Hyaluronic is quite effective in smoothing the skins surface improving its elasticity.
Hyaluronic acid also adds volume to the lips and cheeks, making it an excellent and safer option for fillers. As mentioned earlier, it naturally occurs in the eyes, joints, and skin. Since this chemical is closely related to substances produced in our bodies, you are assured minimal irritation.
You will be pleased to know that hyaluronic acid is absorbed relatively fast on the skin, unlike other skin products on the market. Therefore, a little goes a long way, and you end up using less product. It is also kind on the skin. In fact, most patients who use serums and lotions with acid have not reported any side effects.
These are a few benefits of using hyaluronic acid for skincare. That said, ensure you only source products from reputable vendors.
