Spot the Difference: Eczema Versus Fungal Skin Infection

Posted: September 8, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that appears as red, scaly, and inflamed bumps and patches that come and go. These rashes sometimes ooze with fluid and crust especially in earlier acute stages. In later stages, the rashes may become leathery and scaly. A predominant symptom of eczema is the intense itch that comes with the rash. Eczema is also associated with dry skin and even in the absence of rashes, patients find that they need to moisturize and put in more effort in taking care of their skin.

In babies, rashes typically appear on the face and scalp however in older children and adults, rashes are more commonly found in areas where the skin folds or creases as in the neck, back of knees, inside part of elbows, ankles, and wrists.

Eczema is associated with other "atopic" conditions wherein patients have an inherited allergic tendency like asthma and allergic rhinitis. Patients commonly have family members with the same kind of skin rash, asthma and/or allergic rhinitis.

Eczema is not infectious and is not caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses. Skin with eczema however is more prone to skin infections because there is an existing break in the skin that makes it easier for organisms to enter.

There is no cure for eczema. Like asthma, it is a recurrent condition. However, there are many ways to lessen and manage flare ups.

People may confuse fungal skin infections with eczema because they can also appear as red, inflamed, and itchy rashes. It is therefore important to consult a doctor or a dermatologist who can make an accurate diagnosis and give an appropriate treatment. Here are some differences between fungal skin infections and eczema:

1. A fungal skin infection is caused by fungi. It is treated therefore, with either a topical or oral antifungal which eliminates fungi leading to a cure.

2. Being a form of infection, ringworm may be transmitted via direct contact or sharing contaminated personal items. It is not inherited.

3. Fungi like warm, moist places so areas in the body that provide this environment are typical areas where fungal infections are found like the sweaty feet. Keep skin dry and cool to keep fungal skin infections away.

Lastly, if you're unsure about a rash, it's always good to seek medical advice and avoid self-medication so you don't waste time and money on treatments that don't work.

Bill Maher Finally Goes Head To Head With Christine O’Donnell On Real Time

Posted: at 2:10 pm

video

Two years ago, Christine ODonnell was the Republican candidate for Senate in Delaware, and her race got some national attention after Bill Maher infamously aired a clip of her on his old show Politically Incorrect, where ODonnell admitted she used to dabble in witchcraft. Maher was unable to get ODonnell on his show that year, but finally, she appeared on Real Time tonight. Maher began the interview by apologizing to ODonnell for how much attention the witch video got.

RELATED: Bill Maher To Chris Matthews: The ODonnell Witch Stuff Isnt Really Important

Maher told ODonnell, I made your life hell and Im sorry about that. He said that he didnt mean for the clips of her on Politically Incorrect to be such a big factor in her Senate race. ODonnell laughed it off and admitted that her campaign erred after releasing an ad where she said Im not a witch. Maher admitted that it did hurt [his] feelings that ODonnell never came on his show during her campaign, but ODonnell said it was just a scheduling issue.

Turning to the events in North Carolina this week, Maher asked ODonnell what she thought of Clintons speech and how well it was received. ODonnell said it sounded like Clinton was running based on how much he referred to policies from his administration. She also disputed the idea that the economy is doing better, saying that Obama had four years to fix it.

Maher told ODonnell that to him, the Republican party is acting like everything in the United States was perfect until President Blackenstein took over, and thats when the country took a dark turn. ODonnell admitted that the Republicans were abandoning the principles they stand for in 2008, but then criticized Obama for continuing to blame the Bush administration.

They concluded the interview by talking about social issues and religion. Maher asked ODonnell why Jesus would be a Republican when he seems to be mostly about helping the poor and the sick. ODonnell denied that she believes Jesus would be a Republican, and noted that there is a conservative atheist working in her PAC.

Chinese 'blind spot' for Western readers

Chinese 'blind spot' for Western readers

HONG KONG, Sept 8, 2012 (AFP) -A potent mix of state censorship, conservative publishing choices and scant translation means international readers are given a narrow view of contemporary China, industry critics say. There are the occasional books by Chinese authors that hit the international bestseller lists such as the blockbuster "Wild Swans" by Jung Chang, which has sold millions worldwide, and Adeline Yen Mah's "Falling Leaves". But both of those authors are based in the West -- highlighting the paucity of material from China itself that reaches international markets. Hong-Kong based Harvey Thomlinson founded Make-Do Publishing in 2009 to produce quality Chinese and Asian literature in English translation, capitalising on Hong Kong's unique position as a multicultural Chinese territory where freedom of speech laws remain intact. "You can't underestimate censorship and the impact it has had on the quality of China's literary output," he said. "The effect is like a dust sheet being thrown over a piano -- not only state censorship but also the self-censorship that goes with it." Chinese fiction also tends to follow a template, according to the British publisher, ignoring the realities of industrialised, modern China, which continues to grow and change at a bewildering pace. Western imprints pick out only a few genres for translation such as the Cultural Revolution memoir, along with novels by Westernised Chinese authors -- who often write originally in English. And economic factors also play a major part in the drive to boost sales. "Most books have to turn a profit for publishers and this can make editors and their boards quite conservative about their choices," said London-based author and translator Julia Lovell. "It means they need to look for commercial themes, or books that seem to recapitulate styles and ideas that have worked in the past. Anything new or very literary will, of course, seem a risk." As well as being an easier sell in the West, such books are also less of a risk for the writers, who are reluctant to tackle current social issues for fear of official repercussions. In China's big state-run publishing houses "editing is not a profession any more", said Martin Merz, a Hong Kong-based translator. "Now it's more about avoiding political errors." Make-Do focuses instead on independent authors such as Murong Xuecun and Chen Xiwo, who tend to offer something different from the many government-backed writers in China who receive stipends and other incentives to encourage them to stay on-side. Murong's debut book, "Leave Me Alone: A Novel of Chengdu" was first published online in 2002, where it attracted several million readers before being released in print. The novel tells the darkly comic story of three young men's attempts to make their way in newly capitalist China, their lives beset by dead-end jobs and gambling debts. Chen, who was active in the student democracy movements of the 1980s, was also first recognised as an online writer. His controversial novella "I Love My Mum", which has incest as a theme and is banned in China, will be published in the United States in September.

Home > News City to appeal decision allowing pit bull accused in attack to stay in neighborhood Originally Published on Friday, September 07, 2012 By Cyrus Moulton / The Daily Item

LYNN A Fenton Avenue couple say they fear for their safety after a court hearing officer ruled a pit bull could stay in their neighborhood, even though the animal mauled their leashed shih tzu and its master.

In our court, we decided that a pit bull was more important than a 74-year-old man whos been hurt, Susanne Reynolds, a former longtime Lynn Public Schools teacher, said Wednesday of her injured husband, Jack, a retired Lynn principal. I had the leashed dog. It came on my property and did damage. If it were a human being, it would have been arrested.

Meanwhile, the city plans to appeal the decision by Lynn District Court Clerk Magistrate Stephen Borelli.

There were no reasons given for ruling, city attorney Vin Phelan said Thursday. Typically we dont lose these.

A woman who answered the door at the pit bull owners home declined to comment Wednesday. Nor could attorney Stephen Wise, who represented the owner, be reached Thursday. Borelli could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Susanne and Jack Reynolds said Wednesday that they and their 14-pound shih tzu, Oreo, were getting into their car at noon on May 12 to put flowers on their parents graves for Mothers Day.

Jack Reynolds said he opened the back door when the neighbors pit bull ran down their driveway, jumped into the back seat of the car and began attacking Oreo.

Jack Reynolds said he threw both of his arms around the pit bulls neck and used his body weight to hold the dog, which he estimated weighed between 70 to 90 pounds, for nearly half an hour as they waited for police to arrive. Susanne Reynolds was meanwhile screaming for help.

I ran across the street and heard Susanne outside screaming my husbands dead, neighbor Jannel Vickers recalled. She told me, My husbands dead in the car, and he was motionless trying to hold the dog. Oreo looked at me and his eye was hanging out.

Tunisia: Govt Drops Internet Censorship

Posted: at 2:10 pm

Tunis The internet censorship, more known under the name of "Ammar 404" is henceforth no longer set in Tunisia, asserted Information and Communication Minister Mongi Marzoug denying the social network information on the return of the internet censorship.

In his meeting with the media, the Minister said that the Revolution allowed to put an end to censorship in Tunisia underlining the interim government's commitment to facilitate access to information and promote freedom of expression.

Launching, on September 4, 2012, of the National Forum of Internet governance is "the end Ammar 404", he said.

The Minister said that Tunisia will announce, tomorrow Friday, its membership to joint action for freedom of expression on the Internet "Freedom online", which holds its second session, on September 6-7, 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya.

On the fringes of its participation in this event, Tunisia will apply for hosting the 3rd edition of this conference, said the Minister.

In another connection, Mr. Marzoug presented the programme as well as the main objectives of the 2012 ICT 4 all forum due to be held on September 17-20, 2012 in Hammamet.

This event aims to give a new image of Tunisia as a country leader in the field of ICTs and freedom of expression and boost the country's role in this sector on the Maghrebi, Arab and African levels.

Local Ron Paul supporter experienced highs, lows of GOP convention

Posted: at 2:10 pm

Longview's Samuel Webb was both exhilarated and disheartened while attending the Republic National Convention as an alternate delegate, but his commitment to Ron Paul and the "Liberty Movement" remains strong.

Webb, 35, was one of 10 Paul supporters who were part of Washington's 83-person delegation. Webb was the only delegate for any candidate from Cowlitz County.

He knew it was a long shot, but Webb still held out a slim hope that Paul might emerge as the Republican candidate for president as the result of a deadlocked or brokered convention. Webb also wanted to be sure that Paul's beliefs were represented.

Instead, Webb said what he found in Tampa last week was a highly scripted and controlled environment that didn't welcome dissent. Webb, like many Paul supporters, was outraged at rule changes that he said were approved against party policy and counter to the voice vote results. He also protested when party leaders replaced some Paul supporters in the Maine delegation, adding that national party leaders have stripped almost all power from the elected delegates.

Among his convention memorabilia is one of the yellow Grassroots signs that dissenters held up at various times throughout the convention. It reads "We are the Party," and Webb said that, while Paul doesn't plan to run again for president, the movement will continue.

"The torch has been passed," Webb said. "This isn't about Ron Paul anymore, it's about liberty and the grass roots and the people maintaining the power."

As an alternate delegate, Webb attended the entire convention but was only on the convention floor when his delegate partner was not. Webb got to take the floor during the roll call of state votes, which he said was exciting even though he was disappointed that votes for Pual weren't announced over the arena's loudspeakers as nominee Mitt Romney's were.

And while some panned actor Clint Eastwood's speech, Webb said he loved it because Eastwood criticized both President Obama and Republicans on foreign policy matters. "He was definitely liberty-minded," Webb said.

As for Romney, Webb won't be campaigning for him.

Make no mistake, Webb is not an Obama supporter -- he predicts an "economic crash and a moral crash" if Obama is re-elected. But he can't bring himself to campaign for Romney after the convention, even if some might say that's betraying the party.

What I'd like to see in the iPhone 5

Posted: at 2:10 pm

There are predictions, mock-ups, and rumors galore...but this is what the next iPhone could use most.

I've owned an iPhone every year since its 2007 debut. Every one. The reward for such reckless upgrading has been a sense of the iPhone's evolution over those years. What started as a device that had not many apps to speak of, but dripped futurism, has become an always-on, location-aware, frighteningly integral part of my nervous system.

While I've listed what we expect out of the next iPhone, I haven't told you what I want. So, here's my own personal list of what matters most...to me.

Battery life. Honestly, I can't stress this enough. The iPhone's become my all-in-one catch-all device, the one thing other than my keys and wallet that I need to take with me. It's a mission-critical device. I need that device to last at least a full day. The iPhone 4 was very good in this regard; the iPhone 4S, while faster and better in many important ways, needs a top-off around British teatime if I'm spending the night out and have been power-using my phone all day. Battery pack cases and portable charge packs aside, I really want the iPhone 5 (or "New iPhone," or whatever it's called) to meet or exceed the iPhone 4S in battery life. Based on its allegedly larger size, I think it can -- but maybe the larger screen will make it a wash.

Smoother Siri. I appreciate the idea behind Siri, and the iPhone is better for Siri existing than not. Still, I hardly use it. The occasional errors and odd miscommunications Siri and I have when chatting are usually enough to drive me to old-fashioned typing...which over five years I've become very adept at. However, I'm a city-dweller. I understand that hands-free use for drivers and others could be a big part of the next iOS 6 update, and I might own a car soon enough as I prepare to leave the city. I'm willing to give Siri a second chance.

Complete cloud support. I use iCloud quite a bit: for Photo Streaming to my MacBook Air, iTunes Match to eliminate old-fashioned music syncing, and overnight backups (I restored my iPad from scratch via iCloud). iCloud is only halfway there. I want a complete, unchained iPhone life from my Mac. I'd like my HD videos and photos to be synced and even stored and archived in a secondary cloud location, automatically. I'd love better cloud syncing of stored app data and documents. This won't replace a local backup, but it sure will help.

A slightly bigger screen. I don't want a big, honking screen. That's what my iPad is for. I like a pocketable phone. My jeans pockets already bulge enough. Then again, the amount of screen space on the iPhone feels stale. The iPhone has tons of unused space around the screen, and the screen itself has maintained the exact same dimensions as the original 2007 model. I just want the screen to take up as much of that body size as possible.

4G...only if it doesn't chew up battery life or cost me an arm and a leg. See my above comments on battery life. I'm honestly okay with my "4G" HSDPA data on my AT&T iPhone 4S in New York, and I use Wi-Fi hot spots so frequently that I'm not sure I'd crave 4G LTE. I understand the use of 4G in an iPad for a frequent traveler. Sure, 4G on a phone would be a pleasant experience and make for zippier app use. I just don't want to pay a ton for it, and I certainly don't want my iPhone's battery life to dip down because of it. The third-gen iPad's excellent battery life on 4G is promising.

A tad less glass. The iPhone 4 and 4S are beautiful, but they make me feel like I need a case on all the time. The new iPhone looks like it's bringing back the metal, and I don't mind that one bit. Maybe it'll even encourage me to go caseless once in a while -- you know, live dangerously.

Come Wednesday, we'll found out what the iPhone holds.
