What exactly is a gene? – Video

Posted: at 6:44 pm

What exactly is a gene?
You #39;ve probably heard about GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms but what exactly is a gene and what does it mean to modify the genes of a plant or animal? We hear about DNA and genes all the time in the news and in our biology classes but very few of us can actually explain what a gene is? This short film is designed to help. Here we discuss a basic definition of a gene, show what a gene looks like, what it is that genes actually code for, and the basic idea behind Genetically Modified Organisms. The video also briefly mentions one of the ways DNA strongly suggests that all living things are related and share an evolutionary history. Even though the content given here is just a simplified overview of genetics, after watching this video (along with our first video on DNA http://www.youtube.com you should be able to easily follow any news article, basic conversation, or 100 level college course lecture on genetics, even if you #39;ve never taken a biology course or studied genetics in the past. Special thanks to Hip Hop Artist Anthony Danzl for the music http://www.youtube.com Happy 50th to Packy the freckled Elephant from the Portland Zoo. He just had his birthday and was featured in this video (at 0:45) Content for this video has been modified from two text books: Molecular Biology of the Cell, third edition: Bruce Alberts, Dennis Bray, Julian Lewis, Martin Raff, Keith Roberts, James D. Thailand to build DNA database

Posted: at 6:44 pm

The Justice Ministry plans to build a national DNA database to help police solve crime, identify suspects and bring them to justice.

Justice permanent secretary Kittipong Kityarak co-signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a joint effort to build the first DNA database in Thailand.

The ministry aims to collect DNA samples from 100,000 volunteer prisoners over three years, Mr Kittipong said on Monday.

Under the agreement, FBI Laboratory directorChris Hassell will help the Justice Ministry withthe process of collecting and collatingDNA samples.

Mr Kittipong said the DNA database will be kept and used by the Forensic Science Department to help solve crimes and track down suspects. The Royal Thai Police Office will also be able to access the database.

He said the planned database would help bring suspects of violent crimes to justice, and at the same time help protect citizens from falling victim to criminals.

The justice permanent secretary stressed that the DNA database would play an important role in solving crime.

Currently, 44 countries -- including China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan -- have passed legislation allowing the use of DNA databases, he said.

Mr.Kittipong said Thailand woulduseCODIS DNA software designed by the FBI andcurrently being used in 39 countries.

It could be used to match DNA samples taken from a crime scene withthe DNA database.

New DNA research points way to faster flu vaccines

Posted: at 6:44 pm

An experimental vaccine based on a molecule related to DNA protects animals against influenza and may one day offer an ultra-rapid way to develop new shots for humans, German scientists reported on Sunday.

Assuming it also works in people, the new approach could allow commercial flu vaccines to be designed and manufactured in weeks rather than months.

Making vaccines quickly is critical in fighting flu, particularly during a pandemic when health authorities and drugmakers are in a race to keep up with mutating strains of virus.

Flu vaccines have traditionally been produced in chicken eggs, a tricky and lengthy process. More recently some firms have started using animal cell cultures, with Novartis on November 20 winning the first U.S. approval for such a product.

Both approaches, however, still involve virus cultivation, which can result in variable yields and production delays.

The new vaccine developed by Lothar Stitz of Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and colleagues uses a quicker approach. It is made solely of messenger RNA (mRNA) - a single-stranded molecule that carries information telling cells which proteins to make.

"The only thing we need is the sequence of the relevant genes," Stitz said. "It's a new option and it doesn't take long to do."

His team vaccinated mice, ferrets and pigs with an mRNA vaccine and found that the immune response was similar or better than that found with conventional vaccines. What is more, the new vaccines showed high efficacy in very young and very old animals, which can be a problem with current flu shots.

Reporting their results in the journal Nature Biotechnology, the scientists calculated that a completed vaccine could be produced within six to eight weeks of the genetic code of a flu virus strain being published.

In contrast growing vaccines in fertilised chicken eggs can take up to six months, while using cell cultures may reduce that by up to eight to 10 weeks.

DNA not always the magic bullet in crime investigations

Posted: at 6:43 pm

When someones DNA triggers a match through a statewide database linking that person to the scene of a crime, it doesnt necessarily mean the case is a slam dunk for police and prosecutors.

Next comes the hard part: Investigators must prove there isnt an otherwise noncriminal explanation for why that persons genetic material was found on someones body, on a murder weapon or inside another persons home.

A lot of people think that if you get a DNA hit that, Bingo, you got the person, but it doesnt work that way, Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara said. What law enforcement needs to be cognizant of is that there are many innocent explanations for things to be where they are, and as we get better and better at being able to find DNA, we also have to keep in mind that there is an innocent way for DNA to be left behind.

Since New Yorks statewide database of DNA collected from convicted criminals has been expanded over the years, the ever-growing pool of samples to compare against has helped local police agencies crack tough cases, officials said.

For instance, DNA from a strand of hair found on Jennifer Bennetts body in 2007 ultimately linked Craig Ingersoll to her strangulation. Although Ingersoll never had been a suspect, a DNA match led investigators to question Ingersoll after Utica police arrested him in 2010 for stealing from a business and state law required him to provide a sample of his DNA.

This is great technology, but its not easy, Whitestown police Chief Donald Wolanin said. Knocking on doors and interviewing people is still one of our best tools and probably most reliable. Were arresting more people by doing basic police interviews than we are with DNA technology.

Here are a few examples of how complicated some cases can be, even with DNA evidence.

A bloody cloth

Utica police continue to investigate the killing of someone who was stabbed repeatedly. A bloody cloth recovered from the homicide scene did lead to a DNA match with a known person, but that individual has denied any involvement in the killing, prosecutors said.

DNA gives us a lead, but it doesnt give us enough to proceed, McNamara said. When we confronted the person with the bloody cloth, he said he didnt know what we were talking about. So, just because we find a bloody cloth with his DNA on it, that doesnt mean he killed anyone.

Teach your Droid DNA some GSM tricks

Posted: at 6:43 pm

Harness the Droid DNA's prowess to rock not just roaming on AT&T or T-Mobile.

The Droid DNA is one slick device, but will it work on T-Mobile or AT&T, too?

One of the new HTC Droid DNA's unsung features is its ability to jump onto global GSM networks, which is great when traveling overseas. Verizon certainly thinks so, and thanks to an unlocked SIM card slot, you can also slip in an AT&T or T-Mobile card and flip the DNA over to operate on those carriers.

Now I first heard of the Droid DNA's freedom to link to American GSM networks from smartphone news site Android Central, and since I had just finished reviewing the DNA, my ears perked up right away. The question is, would you really want to port a gadget like the Droid DNA over to a carrier it wasn't designed for? For me the answer is: yes, absolutely.

That's because this hot piece of mobile hardware is extremely lust-worthy in its own right, no matter what network it grabs signal from. First of all, it's one of a handful of U.S. smartphones to boast quad-core processing. The DNA also runs powerful Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software, plus features a massive and sharp 5-inch (1080p) screen.

Unfortunately as part of Verizon's Droid brand, the Droid DNA is exclusive to Big Red, which is a big pain for people who subscribe to other U.S. carriers. For that alone I had to see for myself whether the DNA's radio could be coaxed to grab hold of a local GSM signal correctly. In addition, though I'm technically a T-Mobile customer, I'm constantly taking multiple phones (from various cell providers) for test-drives simultaneously, which doesn't always work out smoothly. Sorry Google Voice, you're a great solution but sometimes you fail miserably and I would love to receive texts and calls reliably for a change.

Pop that LTE card The first step was to power down my HTC Droid DNA test unit and pop open its LTE/SIM card slot. Located on the top edge, I just stuck a push pin (though a small paper clip could work) into the pin hole next to the slot. This ejected a tiny metal tray and the Verizon LTE SIM held within. Trust me, I know 4G LTE cards don't grow trees, so I stashed it in a safe place.

The LTE/SIM card slot is on the top edge.

Insert your GSM SIM Since the Verizon LTE card is the same size as a micro-SIM, I had no trouble placing my T-Mobile SIM in the Droid DNA's SIM tray. Once inserted I powered up the DNA and waited for the signal indicator to detect a signal.

Add an APN When I saw a few bars of coverage appear in the top right of the Droid DNA's screen, I knew I was in business. Next I had to tell the phone what to do with its newfound GSM network. Within the Android settings menu, I tapped Mobile Data, then selected GSM/UMTS Options. From here I hit Access Point names and saw just one entry, VZWINTERNET -- the APN for Verizon's network.
