Jurassic Park-like species revival is possible, Marin futurist claims

Posted: at 5:43 am

From an environmentalist who wants to revive extinct species to a software company seeking to design molecules, Marin County is well represented at this week's TED Conference, the annual gathering of elites from the technology industry and creative fields.

Founded in 1984, the conference -- the acronym stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design -- features 50 speakers from a wide range of fields. Admission to the weeklong event costs a hefty $7,500, but videos of the talks have become a phenomenon online, where they have been streamed hundreds of millions of times.

In a talk Wednesday at the conference in Long Beach, futurist and environmentalist Stewart Brand of Sausalito proposed something previously associated more with the fiction of "Jurassic Park" than with reality -- using DNA to bring extinct species back to life.

"Biotechnology is about to liberate conservation, at least a part of conservation, in a pretty spectacular way," he said.

Brand, known for his creation of the Whole Earth Catalog in the 1960s among other projects, said research is underway that could make so-called "de-extinction" possible. The process could help restore habitats that have been destroyed and teach scientists how to prevent more endangered species from becoming extinct, he said.

Describing himself as a "cheerleader" who is encouraging researchers, Brand said scientists are working on a way to use DNA to re-create the passenger pigeon, a

"The result won't be perfect, but it should be perfect enough because nature doesn't do perfect either," he said.

Reviving other species such as the woolly mammoth may one day be possible, he said.

Addressing people who would likely be concerned about interfering with nature, Brand said humans are responsible for much of the extinction that has occurred.

"Humans have made a huge hole in nature in the last 10,000 years," he said. "We have the ability now, and maybe the moral obligation, to repair some of the damage."

The International Space Station (ISS) will pass through the skies overEast Texas and the ArkLaTexseveral times over the next few nights, with some viewings lasting up to six minutes each.

According to the KSLA StormTracker 12 Weather team, the skies will be clear over the next several nights, making it easy to spot the ISS in the darkening skies. Because of its large size (about the size of a football field), the ISS reflects a great deal of sunlight, making it visible in the darkening sky. It will look like a slow-moving airplane in the sky, although the light will be steady, not blinking like an airplane.

Thursday's viewing of the International Space Station will last from 7:36 p.m. until 7:40 p.m.,trackingthe west to thesouth. However, the station will only reach a maximum height of 20 degrees above the horizon.

The ISS can be seen Friday, March 1 at 6:44 p.m. and remain visible until 6:51. The space station will move from northwest to southeast and reach a maximum height of 41 degrees above the horizon.

Alien DNA? Zecharia Sitchin on Sumerian History
Zecharia Sitchin (RIP) talks on some points of his research findings in this short clip. Some claim his work is mixed with dis-info. I think people should explore and express that what is within them. Ideas then presented, without prejudice- so the individual, can make of it on their own accord, what resonates- or otherwise, to what it`s meaning is. ..once again, enjoy the revealing

Covaris introduces a novel FFPE DNA extraction kit at AGBT 2013

Posted: at 12:47 am

WOBURN, Mass., Feb. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Covaris, Inc. introduced the single-tube FFPE DNA Extraction Kit at the 2013 Advances in Genome Biology and Technology (AGBT) meeting held recently in Marco Island, Florida. This newest innovation from Covaris provides an optimized reagent and protocol for high-yield DNA extraction from Formalin-Fixed, Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) tissue samples. Adaptive Focused Acoustic (AFA) Technology is used to emulsify and separate the paraffin, while simultaneously re-hydrating the tissue sample in an aqueous solution within a few minutes. Covaris Focused-ultrasonicators enable the purely mechanical processing of the samples, eliminating the need for organic solvents. Large Molecular Weight DNA is efficiently extracted from FFPE samples, with greater yield when compared to organic extraction with other commercially available kits. The AFA-based kit brings standardization to a previously uncontrolled pre-analytical preparatory step.

The FFPE Nucleic Acid Extraction Kit utilizes AFA Technology, the standard method for DNA fragmentation for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). An optional DNA fragmentation step can be included in the workflow to precisely size the DNA for applications requiring short DNA fragments, such as NGS all in the same tube. This optional integrated single-tube DNA Shearing streamlines the sample preparation workflow, while also doubling total DNA yield when compared to extraction without fragmentation.

FFPE is a widely used method for archiving tissue specimens; especially clinical samples. Extraction of DNA or RNA from FFPE tissue has traditionally been a challenge as it requires removing the paraffin, rehydrating the sample, and reversing the formaldehyde cross-links, which results in low yields and poor quality of nucleic acid samples. Additionally, the traditional extraction processes require the use of hazardous or difficult-to-handle solvents. Archived FFPE tissues are a rich resource for studying gene variations or gene expression profile changes. This trend has been growing with the continued advances in the fields of genomics and trancriptomics. These new applications benefit from the high-quality starting material and improved workflow provided by the Covaris FFPE DNA Extraction Kit.

About Covaris Covaris, Inc. (www.covarisinc.com) provides advanced sample preparation systems for life and analytical science. Covaris sample prep technologies support a wide variety of applications including Next-Generation Sequencing, ChIP, proteomics, formulations, and compound management. Our patented Adaptive Focused Acoustic (AFA) technology is the industry standard for DNA shearing, and is used by major genome centers, academic, and clinical institutions worldwide. AFA brings unsurpassed speed and efficiency to biological and chemical sample preparation. The AFA process, which is based on shock wave physics, delivers controlled, precise, and accurate acoustic energy to biological and chemical samples.
