Psoriasis is a disease of the immune system manifesting in the skin or joints and there is no cure. According to the National Institute of Health more than 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis which commonly appears on the skin as itchy, red patches. Psoriasis is one of the longest known illnesses and one of the most misunderstood. It often manifests on the scalp, arms, knees and trunk. Dr. Stephen Weiss explains that it can be extremely difficult and painful for those suffering with psoriasis on the palms and feet. Psoriasis was typically treated with gels and creams. In the early 1950 #39;s - 1960 #39;s light-based treatments became available, and evolved to narrow-band UVB treatments. Patients would have to stand in a light box for UVA or UVB therapy and have more than 30-40 treatments to see results. The Xtrac laser treatment by Photomedex is a targeted beam of light in the 308 nanometer wavelength that allows for precise treatment of the area, spearing the surrounding normal tissue. This allows for fewer treatments (roughly 10). Dr Weiss saw 75-90% of patients achieved clearance of Psoriasis for 4-6 months. The Xtrac is considered a medical therapy and most major insurance companies cover the treatment.

ChitChat- Psoriasis
Oh hey, didn #39;t see you there... Well this is just a little chit chat on guttate psoriasis. I have had psoriasis for a while now, and it really effected me emotionally. I lost a lot of confidence, silly I know, but now that it is almost gone I feel better talking about it. I even lied to a lot of people telling them I had an allergic reaction like hives because I was embarrassed to say that I had psoriasis. Now I feel silly for feeling like that, I want everyone to feel good about themselves. So if you have psoriasis guess what? No matter what, I respect you and I know what it #39;s like to be afraid of showing people. I didn #39;t even want to show my doctor at first. I did not post a photo of it in the video because I am still slightly embarrassed by how bad it was, I #39;ll get over it eventually though! So have an absolutely perfect day! It is kind of cloudy today 🙁 I hope you have a smile on your face! Pick-up line: If you #39;re cos^2 and I #39;m sin^2, together, we #39;d make one... 😉 *Ps I #39;m actually extremely good in math, so I find math pick up lines pretty freaking awesome! Drug shown to be effective, safe in psoriasis trial

Posted: at 11:46 pm

Celgene Corp's experimental drug apremilast proved to be more effective than a dummy pill for psoriasis patients in a late-stage study, clearing the way for the company to file for U.S. regulatory approval in the second half of 2013.

Celgene said 59 percent of patients in the 844-patient trial achieved a 50 percent improvement in symptoms at 16 weeks, using a standard score of the severity and extent of psoriasis, compared with 17 percent of placebo patients. A 75 percent improvement in symptoms was seen in 33 percent of the treatment group and 5 percent of the placebo group.

The Phase 3 trial is the first of two pivotal studies of the drug in patients with psoriasis, a disease in which itchy, painful skin plaques are thought to be caused by an inflammatory response initiated by the body's immune system.

Apremilast is a pill that inhibits an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase 4, or PDE4, and acts to damp down inflammation.

Celgene said previously it planned to file for Food and Drug Administration approval of the drug as a treatment for psoriatic arthritis in the first quarter of this year.

Side effects were consistent with those seen in earlier trials of the drug, with the most common being diarrhea and nausea.

Celgene said no cases of tuberculosis or lymphoma were observed through Week 16, and there was no increase in risk of cardiovascular events or serious opportunistic infection.

"From a physician's perspective, this can definitely be a first-line therapy because of the excellent risk/benefit profile," said Dr. Richard Langley, director of dermatology research at Dalhousie University inHalifax, and one of the study's lead investigators. "I think the patient acceptance of this drug and the physician acceptance is going to be extremely high."

He noted that most psoriasis patients are currently treated with methotrexate, which can cause serious side effects.

Newer biologic drugs used to treat psoriasis, which include Amgen Inc's Enbrel and AbbVie Inc's Humira, can make patients more susceptible to infection, Dr. Langley said.

SLU’s interim law dean says he’s done, ‘too politically incorrect ‘ for the job

Posted: at 11:45 pm

ST. LOUISSt. Louis Universitys interim law school dean is stepping down, saying he made politically incorrect statements to faculty and was not a good fit for the position.

Tom Keefe, who took over the temporary post in August, said his inappropriate comments which included a remark about Indians and another comment perceived as sexual harassment were misinterpreted.

But he said he was not pressured to resign.

I have chosen to step down because obviously there have been statements made about things I have done, and in all likelihood Ive done them all, Keefe said in an interview Monday. The problem is Im just too politically incorrect to be a dean.

The university is close to naming a permanent law dean. University spokesman Clayton Berry said a search committee has selected two finalists.

Two people are being interviewed: Michael Wolff, a former Missouri Supreme Court judge and now a law school faculty member, and Anthony A.J. Chivetta, a partner at the Armstrong Teasdale law firm.

Berry did not know when a new dean would be named, but he said the law school would be without an interim leader in the meantime.

Keefe, a trial lawyer, was an unconventional pick for the temporary post when he was named in August. He lacked any academic background.

He filled the position amid controversy. His appointment was announced the same day that the former dean, Annette Clark, abruptly stepped down citing disagreements with the university's president, the Rev. Lawrence Biondi.

Keefe had previously attracted headlines for his colorful comments regarding his appointment.
