Fire Engulfs Cargo Ship Carrying Thousands of Luxury Cars – Futurism
Posted: February 21, 2022 at 6:03 pm
That... can't be good.Coming Up Aces
A giant cargo ship carrying luxury cars including numerous Porches is now adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, burningafter its crew evacuated, according to the Associated Press, which reports that 22 crew members were evacuated on Wednesday and the ship is now just kind of floating and on fire.Which is relatable, frankly.
We are aware of an incident today involving a cargo ship transporting Volkswagen Group vehicles across the Atlantic, a spokesperson told the AP via email. At this time, we are not aware of any injuries. We are working with local authorities and the shipping company to investigate the cause of the incident.
The AP says the ship is carrying nearly 4,000 cars that were meant to go on sale in North America, the New York Times reported. Their fate is now unclear, since finding a boat big enough to tug the Felicity Ace to port is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Just this week, Fox Businessreported on soaring prices in the used car market for 2022, due in large part to demand for new and used cars outpacing supply. Its hard to get new cars because of supply chain shortages that have made it hard for manufacturers to get the parts they need, which is in turn increasing demand and prices for used ones.
Porsche majority shareholder Volkswagen declined to speculate to the AP how this fire and a potential several-thousand-car-loss will impact customers and the car market, but its almostcertainly not good news. In addition, its not clear whether the Ace will sink or cause pollution, although the AP says a Portuguese navy ship has been charged with finding out.
Wed tell you to hold out hope the ship wont cause a pollution-and-price double whammy, butat this point its a little hard to imagine much going right in 2022.

Twin Brothers Marry Twin Sisters, Have Babies Who Are Genetically Brothers – PopCrush
Posted: at 6:03 pm
Identical twin sisters Brittany and Briana told the U.S. Sun that they have experienced most of their lives together. That includes the moment they married identical twinbrothersJosh and Jeremy Salyers in a joint ceremony.
Now, the twin couples are experiencing parenthood together, and their children share a unique bond.
The Salyers family went viral after social media caught on to the fact that bothcouples recentlygave birth to sons.
Of course, little Jax and Jett Salyers are cousins. However, the young boys have even more in common. No, we're not just talking about the fact that their names both start with theletter "J."
As the children of two sets of identical twins, they're also genetically brothers. The happy parents (all four of them) explained the situation in a post on their shared Instagram account.
"Cousins, Genetic Brothers, and Quaternary Twins," they wrote alongside a photo of the young boys (who, unsurprisingly, look very similar). Check it out below:
You may be wondering how cousinscould qualify as genetic brothers. Why doJett and Jax have a better claim tobeing brothers from another mother than most?
According to Futurism, it all stems from the fact that both sets of parents are identical twins. Whenthe Salyers twins got married, they had what is referred to as a "quaternary marriage."
Time fora science lesson: Identical twins come from the exact same sperm and egg. That means that the siblings' DNA is, you guessed it, identical.
In quaternary marriages, both couples have the exact same DNA. Thus, their children also have very similar DNA.
Futurism notes that, based on a DNA panel, itwould be almost impossible to tell kids like Jett and Jax apart.
Right now the Salyers family and their "twinsane life" is getting plenty of attention on social media. It probably doesn't hurt that they reportedly live in the same house, which makes their situation even more... unique.
In an interview on TLC, Brittany and Briana revealed that they even worked together.
Watch them chat about meeting and marrying their identical Prince Charmings below:
The Salyers' unconventional parenting situation has turned them into internet celebrities. However, it's worth pointing out that their case is not unique. There are other examples ofquaternary marriages.
In 2014, identical twin sisters Keyolla and Teyolla Loux married identical twin brothers Eric and Shawn Crow in a similar joint ceremony. Keyolla even wrote an essay about the wedding.

Meta: Is it all a Maya? – The Times of India Blog

According to Wikipedia A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In futurism and science fiction, it is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal virtual world that is facilitated using virtual and augmented reality headsets. Author Neal Stephenson is credited with coining the term metaverse in his 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, in which he envisioned lifelike avatars who meet in realistic 3D buildings and other virtual reality environments.
And Wikipedia says Maya, literally illusion or magic has multiple meanings in Indian philosophies depending on the context. In later Vedic texts, My connotes a magic show, an illusion where things appear to be present but are not what they seem the principle which shows attributeless Absolute as having attributes.
As you can see the virtual is very close to illusion and augmented reality is another word for where things appear to be present. So, the question is does metaverse provide solutions to real world problems and create opportunities for businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs or is it all a maya? The truth is you already live in the virtual world where you care more about what you look like on Instagram and Facebook than in real life.
Most people think the metaverse is a virtual place. Like in the movie Ready Player One or a virtual world, like Minecraft, Roblox. I say the metaverse is the moment in time where our digital life is worth more to us than our physical life. This is not an overnight shift but a gradual change thats been happening for the last decade or two. Every important part of our life is going digital. Work moved from factories to laptops. boardrooms to zooms. Friends moved from neighbors to followers. Where do you find like-minded people? WhatsApp. Twitter. Reddit. etc. And more kids play Fortnite than basketball and football combined.
Now shifting from personal to business, the pandemic accelerated a transition in our organizational reality that may have already been in motion a shift from single-location corporate campuses to more geographically distributed teams and organizations. As a critical mass of people work from wherever they work best, they will choose to spend more time with any technology that makes their preferred work experience possible. And, if this critical mass has the skills and knowledge the world needs, the people still working from the main office will, in turn, adapt.
Luxury brands are getting in on the action. As Vogue Business notes, Gucci was quick off the mark in May when 20 million users visited its virtual Gucci Garden on the Roblox platform. In just two weeks, hundreds of thousands of users bought multiple limited-edition avatar items from the gardens virtual store.
Guccis Dionysus bags even sold for more than the usual price of the physical equivalent. Vogue Business found that users who bought these virtual Gucci items wore them five hours longer than other accessories.
Fashion house Balenciaga teamed up with Epic Games to debut its autumn/winter 2021 collection in VR, offering a special line of in-game outfits and accessories, as well as physical merchandise sold via the game. Balenciaga also released its spring/summer 2022 collection as a video using only one model and a computer-generated image (CGI) audience.
Businesses that want to stay competitive should make plans for how they are going to engage with customers, find new advertising opportunities, and bring in sponsorships in the metaverse. The metaverse is less about becoming immersed in a fantasy world of unicorns and dragons and more about escaping physical limits to spend time in a virtual space thats a version of, or extension of, real life. Instead of only reaching your physical store to get a try or test with the first new product, your customers can join or visit the exclusive launch party no matter where they are in the world. They can have the feeling, sense, and experience they can in the virtual world.
BMW is already building a digital twin a digital representation of a physical asset, system, or process for its factory using Nvidias metaverse platform Omniverse. Microsoft says that it will build its enterprise metaverse with Mesh, a mixed-reality, cloud-based meeting app that can teleport a person digitally to a remote location for shared experiences.
While the road to the metaverse is still being mapped, technology that makes real-world, physical scenarios available virtually and enhances enterprise offerings will play a role. Metaverse may start slow as the technology remains in a nascent stage, market competition will intensify as the tech titans battle for market dominance and non-tech brands track their progress for potential revenue and operational improvements.
So, whether you acknowledge or not, this is also about taking advantage of what you know and understand and applying emerging technology to new context. For example, business should look at metaverse to:
Ultimately, beyond business adoption, metaverse consumer platforms will transform how people play, shop, access media, and interact. The metaverses future will be interesting to watch unfold. I have more questions than answers on what it will ultimately become, but we can be certain that even if seems like maya for now, meta is real as in having attributes.
Views expressed above are the author's own.

DNA structure and function – PubMed

The proposal of a double-helical structure for DNA over 60 years ago provided an eminently satisfying explanation for the heritability of genetic information. But why is DNA, and not RNA, now the dominant biological information store? We argue that, in addition to its coding function, the ability of DNA, unlike RNA, to adopt a B-DNA structure confers advantages both for information accessibility and for packaging. The information encoded by DNA is both digital - the precise base specifying, for example, amino acid sequences - and analogue. The latter determines the sequence-dependent physicochemical properties of DNA, for example, its stiffness and susceptibility to strand separation. Most importantly, DNA chirality enables the formation of supercoiling under torsional stress. We review recent evidence suggesting that DNA supercoiling, particularly that generated by DNA translocases, is a major driver of gene regulation and patterns of chromosomal gene organization, and in its guise as a promoter of DNA packaging enables DNA to act as an energy store to facilitate the passage of translocating enzymes such as RNA polymerase.
Keywords: A-DNA; B-DNA; DNA as an energy store; DNA backbone conformation; DNA elasticity; DNA information; DNA structure; DNA topology; alternative DNA structures; genome organisation.

No, the CDC is not collecting your DNA from PCR test samples – 10TV

A flurry of false information spurred from a recent Tweet by the CDC about PCR test samples and genomic sequencing.
COLUMBUS, Ohio You've heard a lot of talk about genomic sequencing: It's the process used in labs to detect variants of COVID-19 from PCR test samples.
Some social media users falsely claim it's also used to collect samples of your DNA.
Lindsey Mills takes the claim to the experts to verify why thats not true.
The CDC is using PCR COVID test samples to collect your DNA.
Heres what we found:
This is the Tweet from the CDC that sparked a flurry of false information in a thread.
It says: "Remember that #COVID19 nose swab test you took? What happened to the swab? If it was processed with a PCR test, there's a 10% chance that it ended up in a lab for genomic sequencing analysis."
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene retweeted it and wrote: "Did the @CDCgov get permission from people to take their DNA???" And there are replies like this: Do you have signed consent forms for every single DNA sample?"
One day after the original Tweet -- the CDC followed up with another to clarify. It says in part the "CDC and our partners conduct genomic sequencing analysis of the VIRUS that causes COVID-19."
"Our cells contain DNA, not RNA, you could do genetic sequencing on DNA or RNA but in the context of genetic sequencing, on a COVID test, it's genetic sequencing only for RNA of the virus, and not the person's DNA, explained Dr. Gastaldo.
We can verify: the claim that the CDC is collecting your DNA from PCR COVID test samples is false.
"This is an RNA virus, not the DNA virus. And that's what a PCR test does, it detects a piece of the RNA," Dr. Gastaldo said.
Have something you'd like us to verify? Send us an email to verify@10TV.com.

Bring back the woolly mammoth? Steal DNA? The prospects and pitfalls of rewriting life. – The Boston Globe
Posted: at 6:02 pm
After more than a decade studying artificial intelligence, Webb shifted her sights to the links between biology and technology, generally described as synthetic biology, in part because she observed Big Tech companies becoming deeply invested in it. She and geneticist Andrew Hessel are coauthors of a new book, The Genesis Machine: Our Quest to Rewrite Life in the Age of Synthetic Biology. It does an admirable job of staying clear of both hype and fearmongering, and I wanted to ask Webb why she sees such a wide range of possible outcomes. Our conversation has been condensed and edited.
Some people are customizing their diets based on what they learn from DNA tests. Is the biological age already upon us?
For around three decades, weve been making progress on the technologies that are shaping the biological age. I think we entered it officially when the first in vitro fertilization treatment was completed successfully in 1978.
You can sequence your full genome now for less than the cost of a pair of Nike Air Jordans. However, a good question is what would compel somebody to give up their DNA to help them figure out what food to eat or when to drink what. DNA-based nutrition analysis can be entertaining, like horoscope-based science. Still, you shouldnt make any life choices based on it.
How are you defining synthetic biology in the book?
The bare-bones definition is: Synthetic biology is the application of science to improve or, in some cases, redesign life to have new or better purposes. Its a field of science that combines engineering, computer science, biology, and design.
I want to put a footnote here and say this is not about designer babies.
Do you mean synthetic biology is not only about designer babies?
Yes. I think anytime we talk about genome editing or reprogramming life, people immediately leap to designer babies. But synthetic biology is about making different types of improvements to different types of living organisms.
This includes creating new life.
Theres research being done on minimum viable genomes to understand how the different components work and why. Another field is trying to clone or re-create the DNA of animals that are extinct.
I take it youre talking about resurrecting animals like the woolly mammoth. Do you think its possible?
Lots of genomes are being decoded. George Church, a preeminent geneticist, is working on a version of the woolly mammoth. A couple of days ago some scientists figured out the genome of the numbat, a relative of the extinct Tasmanian tiger. Sequencing technology has gotten better, and we have DNA samples. And so were able to clone genomes, and this potentially could lead to resurrecting species.
The goal isnt to create a zoo filled with formerly extinct animals. Its mostly an effort to increase biodiversity, which has been plummeting, and possibly find new opportunities to deal with climate change. Part of this woolly mammoth project is about rewilding the very northern reaches of the planet, where enormous animals used to stomp around and compact the permafrost layer, which helps to keep greenhouse gases from escaping it.
Can changing the environment be risky?
Engineering biology raises questions about unpredictability. In some limited cases, there are on and off switches that can be coded into genomes. But it can be much more challenging to program an off switch for a complex organism in the wild than for a cell in a lab. Introducing something new into the environment may have downstream impacts that we didnt consider initially.
Many people are understandably worried about engineered viruses. Are there any circumstances where we should root for scientists to create new virus genomes?
The best way to think of a virus is that a virus is just a container for code. In a way, its like a USB stick: Its a container that can carry code thats malicious, benign, or great. Right now, we are dealing with a deadly pathogenic virus. But theres research underway looking at engineering viruses to fight particular types of cancer and other viruses. If we can confront deadly pathogens more precisely at a code level, what does that potentially give us? More control and better options. Right now, theres no precise way to mitigate a lot of the challenging viruses or cancers.
How can gene editing meet the challenges of global warming and food scarcity?
I think this is probably a little bit further off. Lets start with carbon dioxide. We have too much of it right now. But what if there was a way to engineer a leaf that could suck up 10 times more CO2 than, lets say, the average existing leaf, and it created organic fertilizer that doesnt cause any problems with our topsoil?
Or think about externalities that we cant control at the moment, like extreme weather events that put our food production and water supply in jeopardy. We might be able to use some of this technology to engineer better plants, like corn. I grew up outside of Chicago, where corn takes up a ton of space, and a cornstalk only has three to four ears of corn growing on it. What if we could engineer corn to be three feet taller, have 20 or 30 ears of corn, and require the same resources as our current cornstalks? Then we can do that type of farming in a fraction of the amount of space potentially indoors in a giant warehouse where you could control the temperature, humidity, and the amount of water. If you have that level of control, you dont need to use pesticides with chemicals that people are concerned about.
How can a diverse world reach a shared understanding of what the limits of synthetic biology should be?
One way to do that is to make sure more voices are a part of the conversation. One of the issues that we highlight in the book is that many of the editorial boards of core scientific journals are fairly homogenous. For various reasons, we also dont see enough people of color represented in the existing genetic databases. If were trying to optimize the future for everyone, we need more diversity and must involve more people in the conversation earlier on.
What if bad actors get their hands on powerful gene-editing technologies that are cheap and easy to use?
During the World Economic Forum, a collective of people near Davos picked up detritus, like forks and napkins, and claimed to have scraped off the DNA of global leaders, including Angela Merkel and Donald Trump. They said they would auction it to the highest bidder. Were at a point where DNA can be scraped off discarded items and used to try to piece together some form of a genome. Doing so would be problematic. After all, its illegal to pluck a hair off of somebodys head to try to scrape their DNA from it. But in the future, if a bad actor works hard enough, its plausible they could use DNA to invent an ailment intended for just one person.
Given all the possibilities, I completely understand why Emmanuel Macron recently refused a nasal swab when visiting Vladimir Putin in Russia.

Burglar snared after leaving DNA on a rock used to smash into Romsey home – Hampshire Live
Posted: at 6:01 pm
A burglar was snared by police after leaving DNA on a rock used to smash his way into one property and a fingerprint on a window at another.
Ian Masters, aged 33, broke his way into a house in Church Lane, Southampton, on November 13 last year, by prising open a bathroom window.
Portsmouth Crown Court heard Masters smashed a kitchen door using a brick, before smearing cheese across the kitchen and stealing a Nintendo Switch, bank letters, and a laptop.

The items were not recovered.
But Hampshire Constabulary were able to link Masters to the crime after finding a fingerprint he left on the bathroom window.
Then, on December 16, a house in Brook Way, Romsey, was broken into while the occupants were out.
A glass pane on a kitchen door was smashed with a rock to gain entry.
A credit card, two debit cards, 45 worth of Icelandic currency, 30 in cash, two mobile phones and three gold rings, including a wedding ring were taken.
Again, the items were never recovered.
The owner later received a text from his bank to say the credit card was used six times to buy items worth 135.80, with one declined transaction of 21.
Police later discovered DNA left on the rock matched Masters while CCTV footage showed a man matching his description using the credit card.

He was arrested days later on December 23 before being further arrested and charged in January.
Masters, who was serving at HMP Lewes when he appeared in court, has now been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary and fraud by false representation.
Police Staff Investigator Sarah Stewart from Hampshire Constabulary, said: "Your home is somewhere you should feel safe which is why dwelling burglaries can be so traumatic for those affected, beyond the impact of the belongings that are stolen.
This sentence shows we will use all the tools at our disposal, including forensics, to bring offenders to justice and I hope it reassures our communities that we take burglary very seriously.
