DNA to determine if bones found in South Dakota are girls who vanished in 1971

Posted: at 7:42 am

DNA testing is being done on bones found inside an old submerged car to determine whether they belong to two 17-year-old girls who disappeared in South Dakota in 1971, authorities told FoxNews.com.

Cheryl Miller and Pamella Jackson were last seen May 29, 1971, driving a 1960 Studebaker Lark on their way to a party. Authorities this week pulled a rusted Studebaker from an embankment in Brule Creek near Elk Point, and are processing evidence.

Miller's sisters, Rita Allen and Dawn Hewlett, live in Watertown. They told local station KELO-TV that they're grateful for the development in the cold case. They say their mother's biggest wish was "never give up" -- and no one has.

The sisters say they will wait to see what answers they get, and they aren't setting any expectations.

"Skeletal remains have been recovered, as well as additional items," authorities said in a press release Tuesday. "No further information will be released until a requested autopsy and further testing is complete."

The statement was issued after crews lifted the rusted, mangled hulk from an embankment in Brule Creek near Elk Point, which isn't far from the South Dakota town of Vermillion where Cheryl Miller and Pamella Jackson were from.

High spring water levels followed by a drought this summer helped reveal the old car. Authorities recovered a Studebaker hubcap and a license plate matching the car once owned by Miller's grandfather.

A fisherman, who remembered the 42-year-old case, told The Associated Press that he called authorities after noticing one of the car's wheels sticking out of the creek. It's not clear what, if anything, came of that phone call.

The disappearance of the Vermillion High School juniors was one of the initial investigations of South Dakota's cold case unit. The unit was formed in June 2004 to focus on unsolved suspicious deaths and disappearances; there's no time limit on filing criminal charges in homicide cases.

A September 2004 search of a Union County farm turned up bones, clothing, a purse, photographs, newspaper articles and other items, but not the car. Authorities have not ever said if the bones recovered were the girls' -- or even whether they were human remains.

DNA evidence leads to arrest in 1987 killing

Posted: at 7:42 am

A former professional boxer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the 1987 slaying of his manager, Los Angeles police said.

An LAPD-FBI fugitive task force took Exum Speight, 50, into custody at his San Fernando home Wednesday morning, a day after an arrest warrant charging him with murder was filed, police said.

Cold case detectives said DNA ultimately linked Speight to the killing of Douglas Stumler, a 30-year-old Los Angeles County Housing Authority employee who was found dead inside his West L.A. apartment on March 31, 1987. Stumler sidelined as a boxing manager and worked with Speight, even living with him at some point during the mid-1980s, LAPD Det. Rick Jackson said.

Stumler spent March 29, 1987, with a friend and returned to his apartment alone, Jackson said. The friend called later that Sunday night, but Stumler didnt answer the phone.

Red flags were raised when Stumler a sports fan and Indiana native didnt meet with friends the next day to watch his Hoosiers win the NCAA basketball championship, Jackson said. When he didnt show up for work Tuesday, his friends grew more concerned.

They know somethings not right, he said.

A friend went to Stumlers apartment with the building manager and found his body.

Jackson said there was evidence of a pretty violent struggle that stretched across the apartment. There were multiple causes of death, he said, including strangulation and stab wounds.

It was not a quick thing, he said.

Speight initially landed on the detectives radar, as the boxer and his manager had a bit of an issue years before over stolen property, Jackson said. But the connections were circumstantial investigators were never able to definitively link Speight to the crime.

CLC bio and UK scientists assemble ash tree genome

Posted: at 7:41 am

AARHUS, Denmark--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

This week, collaborating researchers at CLC bio and Queen Mary University of London have released a genome assembly of the European ash tree, Fraxinus excelsior, as part of the British Ash Tree Genome project.

The release comes as populations of ash trees across Europe have been devastated by the ash dieback fungus, which spread to Denmark and to the UK in 2003 and 2012, respectively. Fortunately, a small number of ash trees appear to have low susceptibility to the disease. It is hoped that by releasing the genome sequence publicly, scientists around the world can use it to determine the genetic or epigenetic causes of the variation in susceptibility.

Senior Lecturer at QMUL, Dr. Richard Buggs, states, We were very fortunate to sequence a tree that was the progeny of a self-pollination, produced ten years ago by David Boshier from the University of Oxford. The tree is now an invaluable resource, because its low heterozygosity enables a higher quality genome assembly than would have been possible in a more heterozygous tree.

PhD student at CLC bio, Lizzy Sollars, continues, "Using CLC bios de novo assembler, along with the open-source scaffolding tool SSPACE, we produced our best de novo assembly so far. The current version consists of 142,000 scaffolds, with an N50 of almost 69,000, and hits 97% of 248 conserved eukaryotic genes. Although several plant species have now been sequenced, there is still no closely related reference sequence for the ash. We hope that the new reference genome can lay the foundations of research into the ash dieback disease, as well as enable other forestry researchers to use genomic approaches in their studies."

The British Ash Tree Genome project, funded by an urgency grant from NERC, started in January 2013. Samples were taken from the selfed tree, owned by The Earth Trust, Oxfordshire, UK, and DNA was extracted from the sample by QMUL PhD student Jasmin Zohren. Samples were then sent to Eurofins, Germany, for sequencing on Illumina and Roche 454 platforms, and the resulting data was assembled into contigs using the CLC bio de novo assembler and open-source software.

The latest assemblies are available for download on the BATG website:
