Neuroscientist Ponders Whether People Remain Conscious After Having Their Heads Chopped Off – Futurism

Heres a macabre question: how long can the brain continue to process information after being severed from its body? Do we actually see our lives flash before our eyes? And how long does it take to actually lose consciousness after such a catastrophic injury?
Bangor University cognitive neuroscience professor Guillaume Thierry examines these questions in a fascinating new piece for The Conversation. He first started wondering about the concept, he wrote,when he learned about the use of the Guillotine during the French revolution when he was 15 years old.
As far as we know right now, six minutes after the heart stops, the brain essentially dies, Thierry writes. Then, deterioration reaches a point of no return and core consciousness our ability to feel that we are here and now, and to recognize that thoughts we have are own own is lost.
Lab experiments involving mice more or less confirmed this hypothesis, with neural activity ceasing less than a minute after consciousness is lost.
But what about people have undergone near death experiences, reporting they had their lives flash before their eyes?
If humans can be resuscitated after six, seven, eight or even ten minutes in extreme cases, it could theoretically be hours before their brain shuts down completely, Thierry argues.
Its exceedingly difficult and bioethically fraught to record and study the brain activity of a dying person. One recent study, however, aimed to record the brain waves of an 87-year-old epilepsy patient for seizures. But during the study, the patient experienced a heart attack and died.
The findings suggested that some brain waves changed their patterns even after the patient had died and blood stopped flowing to the brain. In short, theres still a glint of a chance that we are in fact able to see our lives flashing before our eyes.
The researchers however only reported on brain activity recorded over a period of about 15 minutes, including a few minutes after death, as Thierry points out in his piece, which means we still dont know what happens beyond that point.
Thierry is now hoping that future research in the field, with longer measurements of neural activity after death, perhaps even brain imaging, will provide support for the idea that ones life flashes before their eyes one last time.
It would be a peaceful sendoff into the unknown even if it occurred after having ones head chopped off.

A much beloved comet flew a little too close to the Sun and appears to have disintegrated during its closest approach an apt metaphor, and appropriate end, for the space snowball.
The comet, dubbed Leonard, was first discovered on January 3 of last year by a senior research specialist at the University of Arizonas Lunar and Planetary Laboratory named Gregory Leonard. At the time, it was as far away as Jupiter, EarthSky reports, and wasnt particularly noteworthy until later that year, when amateur astronomers started suggesting in November that it might be starting to disintegrate.
But Leonard didnt appear to disintegrate until making its closest approach to the Sun in January of this year. Astronomers watched as Leonard kept fading, in a decisive end to an exciting year-long comet chase. In February, it was a mere ghost of what it once was, as seen in images taken by the Slooh robotic telescope in Chile.
In fact, according to Leonard, a ghost has now become an apt metaphor for the dust and gas that likely remains in its place.
As for the comets possible demise, I dont mind the fact that it may have disintegrated, he told EarthSky. With its post-perihelion hyperbolic orbit, I once imagined the comet sometime in the deep future haunting another solar system. Now with its nucleus possibly disintegrated, it may more strangely appear as a ghostly, hyperbolic wisp of dust and gas, if that.
The paths of comets like Leonard are still very hard to predict. Volatile surface material gets expelled as their cores are warmed by the Sun, causing them to move erratically.
Comet Leonard was particularly odd, featuring an unusually triangular shaped head, while also seemingly veering way off its predicted course, according to EarthSky.
During its travels, the mile-acrossice chunk came tantalizingly close to us, well inside the Earths orbit, allowing some experts to see it unaided glinting in the night sky, showing off its impressive tail.
Speaking of its tail, NASA and the European Space Agencys Solar Orbiter managed to fly right through it twice.
It was an utterly surreal experience having a much-anticipated comet sailing dimly overhead for most of 2021, Leonard told EarthSky, and I was thrilled when it began brightening and tracking across the autumn and winter skies, and of course bearing my familys name as it was.
In the end, the encounter could teach us about the very early days of our solar system.
Comets are literally older than dirt and speak to important questions of deep time and our very origins, Leonard told EarthSky.
And of course, comets are full of surprises, reminding us that we humans are not in control, he added.

The biggest stars of TED Talks often have a shorthand claim to fame: the neuroscientist who discovered he was a latent psychopath or the 12-year-old app developer. But the game designer and futurist Jane McGonigal whose TED lectures have garnered over 15 million views is harder to define. To some, shes the researcher who urged us to collectively spend 21 billion hours per week on games of Warcraft, building skills to solve climate change and poverty. To others, shes the woman who suffered a brain injury, then hastened her recovery by designing a game she called Jane the Concussion Slayer.
In Imaginable, McGonigal stakes out yet another claim to fame: oracle. She leads simulations for her work. One such 2010 exercise had participants envisioning a future upended by a global respiratory pandemic, raging wildfires, and online disinformation spread by a shadowy group called Citizen X. As these story lines gave way to eerily similar realities, McGonigal received a flood of messages from past participants. Im not freaking out, one wrote. I already worked through the panic and anxiety when we imagined it 10 years ago. Hoping to impart the same equanimity to her readers, McGonigal argues that mapping out imminent scenarios not only readies us for them, but preps us for unforeseen curveballs too.
And to simulate the future, per McGonigal, you must analyze it in vivid detail. If an epidemic of deer ticks leads to severe allergies worldwide, will you wear your EpiPen as an armband, on your waist, or strapped to your thigh?
To simulate the future, per McGonigal, one must analyze it in vivid detail, and she guides readers through questions about how wed feel and what wed do in different scenarios. Do her methods work? Absent a large-scale study, its hard to be sure. Imaginable does offer up neuroscientific findings, some more convincing than others. Her case mightve been helped by a deeper look at the approachs limits. For example, she means to empower her readers when she writes, If youre not the hero of your own future, then youre imagining the wrong future. But how might we do harm when picturing the future largely through our own eyes? When might a forward-looking gaze be a distraction? Can ambitious future-thinking lead to catastrophe?
Your opinion of Imaginable may ultimately be hard to separate from your feelings about other futurist authors or Silicon Valleys techno-utopians. Levitating warehouses or humans genetically engineered to survive on Mars might sound preposterous, but to McGonigal, theyre not. Anything is plausible. One gets the sense that McGonigal could hold her own in a high-stakes discussion with military strategists, but overall, Imaginable strikes an upbeat, conversational tone. Indeed, lines like, What next? Dont worry. Literally, dont worry, might not sit well with those of us whove ground our teeth down to stumps over the past two years.
Maybe McGonigal remains so buoyant because she sees play everywhere. She writes about leading a quick game of When does the future start? That, to me, sounds like a question an exercise at best. But maybe thats her point: A game can be anything you approach with a sense of fun. McGonigal seems like one of the few interested in gamings potential to foster collective well-being, rather than filling corporate coffers. Play for plays sake but also for the sake of solving world problems is an uncommon self-help angle. In Imaginable, theres no tangible reward save the feeling of readiness itself. Which, right now, is certainly appealing.

A scientist is sounding the alarm on a massive oil tanker that he says will likely spill roughly 40 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean.
Christopher Reddy, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, penned a piecefor CNN calling attention to a decaying oil tanker anchored off the coast of Yemen. The ship, ironically dubbed FSO Safer, has been there since March 2015 when the nearby port city of Al-Hudaydah was seized by a militant group known as the Houthi rebels.
The tanker is filled with more than a million barrels of crude oil, which makes it a major cause of concern for scientists worried that any accident involving the Safer could result in it spilling into the ocean.
If there was any issue with the tanker, Reddy says that it would create an environmental calamity worse than the catastrophic Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 that resulted in hundreds of miles of Alaskan coastline getting covered in crude oil. Thats because Safer is carrying four times the amount of oilas the Valdez.
And in addition to the harm caused to aquatic life, many of its worst impacts would directly affect people, Reddy said.
He added that a spill would ruin fisheries throughout the region, which relies on them for food. It could also send toxic fumes into the air, causing illness for thousands.
Thats not the worst of it though, according to the scientist.
Perhaps most ominously, the vessel is at risk of igniting into a waterborne fireball that could erupt with massive explosive force, wreaking even more potential ecological devastation, Reddy horrifyingly adds.
Fortunately, the leader of the Houthi rebels have agreed to allow Safers oil barrels to be transferred to another vessel. However, its contingent on the United Nations pulling together resources to make it happen.
Reddy said that its important that the UN move on this quickly. In February this year, the FSO Trinity Spirit a nearly identical tanker exploded and sank off the coast of Nigeria.
Hopefully, the UN can get their act together and remove the oil quickly. Heck, with current gas prices skyrocketing, it might even help alleviate the price at the pump too.

Encouraging teens to turn down the volume
Between video conference meetings, watching videos and listening to tunes, people spend a lot of time using headphones and earbuds. Does all of that listening put your hearing at risk?
Dr. Karin Ross , an Olmsted (Minn.) Medical Center audiologist, says she's seeing more teenagers with hearing loss that's likely due to cranking up the volume on listening devices. Her recommendation is for everyone to pay attention to volume. "We have the ability to turn the volume up pretty loud on most devices," Ross says.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's website notes that 120 decibels is what you'd hear standing next to a blaring siren and it's enough to cause ear injury and pain. Ross said her kid's smartphone can put out 130 decibels at top volume, which is as loud as some military jets at takeoff.
"Turning down that volume to about half way, cuts that sound in half," says Ross. "So you're looking at about 65 decibels, which is plenty loud and causing no damage to your ears."
How does loud sound hurt your hearing? Ross says your inner ear, the cochlea, is shaped like a snail and contains hair-like cilia and fluid. Sound enters in the inner ear in waves. If the sound is really loud, the waves are strong and can bend or break the cilia, damaging hearing temporarily or permanently.
Ross has tips for keeping your hearing safe.
Is that sink full of dishes actually good for your health?
Maybe it's time to reconsider that kitchen sink full of dirty dishes. Washing and drying them may not be at the top of your list of fun things to do. But, that chore might just be good for heart health.
A new study shows simply being "up and about" doing normal, daily things can significantly benefit cardiovascular health. Yes, running or brisk walking is good for your heart health, but so are activities such as housework, gardening, cooking and even showering.
The study was done by a multi-center team led by researchers at the School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at University of California San Diego. The researchers looked at the activity of more than 5,000 women between the ages of 63 and 97. They found that compared to women with less than 2 hours of daily routine activities, women with at least 4 hours had a 43% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, a 43% lower risk of coronary heart disease, a 30% lower risk of stroke and a 62% lower risk of cardiovascular disease death.
The study demonstrates that all movement counts toward disease prevention, said first author Dr. Steve Nguyen, a postdoctoral scholar at the School of Public Health. Spending more time in daily life movement, which includes a wide range of activities we all do while on our feet and out of our chairs, resulted in a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
The researchers say that much of our daily lives are spent doing routine activities. And it's time to consider what that type of movement does for our health. The study is published in the online edition of the Journal of the American Heart Association .
Nappuccino: What every mom needs
A study in the British Medical Journal, General psychiatry, shows napping may improve your cognitive function your mental prowess.
Dr. Chad Asplund , a Sports Medicine expert who specializes in sleep and athletics, told me that he thinks naps are underrated. He says for many people, a quick 20-minute power nap can help boost energy for the rest of the day without disrupting your sleep at night.
Asplund mentioned another type of nap that I find to be very intriguing. He calls it the "nappuccino."
"We do this with special ops in the military and with our drone pilots in the Air Force," says Asplund. "We give them a caffeine supplement or small cup of coffee, then they take a power nap."
Asplund says it takes 30 minutes for the caffeine to come on board, so when you wake up after the power nap, you experience the effects of both the caffeine and the nap. The "nappuccino" is for healthy adults who can handle the caffeine.
Time to plan that warm-weather vacation
Recently, I was lucky enough to have a short vacation in the sun. While digging my toes into the sand on the beach (after having slathered sufficient amounts of sunscreen, of course), I began to wonder about whether the sun hitting my skin would boost vitamin D levels. That thought prompted me to then dig into the recommendations and some of the research that's been published about vitamin D.
And, wow, is it confusing! Vitamin D levels seem to differ among groups of people, and depend on where you live, what you eat, the medical conditions you have and how old you are.
The Mayo Clinic News Network notes that Vitamin D boosts bone health by helping you absorb calcium and phosphorous. Too little vitamin D increases an adult's risk of osteoporosis and potentially other medical issues. And if kids don't get enough they're at increased risk of rickets.
Sunlight ultraviolet rays hitting your skin is the main source. You can get small amounts of vitamin D from foods, such as egg yolks, cheese and fatty fish. And vitamin D exists in fortified foods, such as milk, orange juice and cereal. Or you can take vitamin D supplements. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get 600 international units of vitamin D each day, with people over 70 getting 800 units.
So for those of us living in a northern climate, will a few days at a southern beach raise your vitamin D levels? A 2016 study from Edinburgh University published in the journal Plos One revealed that people who took regular vacations in the sun had higher vitamin D levels than those who didn't. They also found that farmers, who tend to work outside, also had higher levels.
Plus, at a recent visit to my healthcare provider for a regular exam, I learned that you need about 30 minutes of sun exposure a day to get enough vitamin D. But because I always wear sunscreen, which reduces the amount of ultraviolet rays that hit my skin, 30 minutes might not be enough.
Sun exposure does increase your risk of skin cancer. So if you are in the sun, be sure to wear sunscreen and sun protective clothing. And limit your time in the sun.

Life expectancy is a measure commonly considered when it comes to the overall health of a population. In this day and age, when most of us think about which medical interventions are most important to increase life expectancy, we probably think about things like treatment of cancer, interventions to treat heart attacks, or surgeries for life threatening illnesses. While those things are all important, their overall impact on a populations life expectancy pales in comparison to the prevention of infectious disease.
Average life expectancy around the world has doubled in the last two hundred years, from about 40 years to 80 years, with the bulk of that change occurring long before we had effective cancer treatment or cardiac catheterization. Before the 20th century, infant and childhood death was extremely common due to infections spread by contaminated water and food. It is estimated that through most of human history nearly half of children died before adulthood, almost entirely due to infections.
Armed with the new knowledge of germ theory, societies in the late 1800s began instituting early public health interventions such as sewage management, water treatment, milk pasteurization, and garbage collection, which resulted in rapid decreases in death from food and water borne infections, and thus increased population wide life expectancy.
Later, widespread use of vaccines for many fatal diseases led to enormous improvements in the health and longevity of populations across the globe. Try to imagine a world in which almost everyone is affected by the death of children due to polio, measles, smallpox, tetanus, the list goes on. That these deaths are now extremely rare or eliminated al together is nothing short of a modern miracle, and we ought not take it for granted.
Antibiotic use has exploded since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, and the proper use of antibiotics continues to help us prevent early death due to infections that might have been fatal left untreated. Modern science has led to effective treatments for even the most challenging infections such as tuberculosis and HIV.
Modern medicine uses abundant, wonderful technologies and treatments which help us extend lives and reduce suffering of our individual patients. But statistically, no fancy new development is likely to have the quantitative impact on human society that compares to those early public health measures. As a society, we would be careless to forget the worth of our public health institutions which have helped us thrive and double our average life expectancy. The pursuit of a healthy lifestyle can sometimes divert attention away from what is most important: having fun. Its a reminder from the worlds oldest living person, Kane Tanaka, a vivacious 119-year-old woman residing in Fukuoka, Japan.
The caption reads: Tanaka did not mention a regular fitness routine or a precise food plan when questioned about the key to her longevity. Tanaka has consumed so much Coke throughout her life that the Coca-Cola company surprised her on her 119th birthday with two personalized bottles of her favorite beverage, which her great-granddaughter Junko Tanaka shared on Twitter.
So, what has kept Tanaka enthused and motivated even after he has reached the age of 100? It is not concentrating on the past, but rather focusing on the present moment, according to her grandson, Eiji Tanaka. I dont recall her discussing the past much, he told CNN. Shes really forward-thinkingshe loves living in the moment. Her family has also stated that she keeps her mind and body active by performing arithmetic, calligraphy, and staying curious. She did, in fact, work at her familys store until she was 103 years old.
The connection between health, meaning, and happiness is well-established. In fact, four of the nine longevity pillars (qualities shared by residents in Blue Zones, where people regularly live to be 100) have nothing to do with diet or exercise. Longevity is bestowed to individuals who find meaning in their lives, handle stress, participate in their communities, and stay close to their families.
