Amino acid’s increase suspected in diabetes

Posted: at 7:43 am

Dec. 19, 2013 Elevated levels of an amino acid, tyrosine, alter development and longevity in animals and may contribute to the development of diabetes in people, new research from the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio indicates. This line of study could potentially lead to a novel way to prevent or treat the disease. The research is reported in PLOS Genetics, a journal of the Public Library of Science.

Evidence of a direct effect in diabetes

Tyrosine is increased in the blood of people who are obese or diabetic, said study senior author Alfred Fisher, M.D., Ph.D., of the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at the UT Health Science Center. Among people who are obese, those at the highest risk of developing diabetes tend to have higher tyrosine levels. "It was unknown whether this was simply a marker of diabetes risk or could be playing a direct role in the disease," Dr. Fisher said. "Our work suggests that tyrosine has a direct effect."

Dr. Fisher is a physician scientist with the Barshop Institute's Center for Healthy Aging and the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. He has studied tyrosine's effect on insulin signaling in an animal model called C. elegans (roundworms) since 2005. The observation that tyrosine was elevated in human diabetics further spurred the research. Now he is ready to take research insights back into people.

Concept to be tested in humans

"This will be tested in small human clinical trials," Dr. Fisher said. "Our team will augment tyrosine levels in study participants for a short period and observe whether this changes the ability of the body to respond to insulin, which is a key hormone involved in controlling blood sugar levels. This will not be detrimental to participants, as the increase will be transient and well below the level of what is clinically relevant."

As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Fisher found that increasing the levels of tyrosine in roundworms promoted their longevity. Worms with mutations of certain genes lived 10 percent to 20 percent longer. One combination of genetic mutations produced an almost 60 percent increase in life span.

Same inhibition, different effects

"In both humans and worms, the effect is due to an inhibition of insulin signaling," Dr. Fisher said. "Interfering with this pathway produces longevity in worms, whereas in people it leads to insulin resistance and an elevated risk of developing diabetes."

Tyrosine has been studied for decades, but few if any research groups have made the connection between tyrosine and diabetes.

TODD STARNES: American Legion outraged over VA Christmas censorship

Posted: at 7:42 am

The national commander of the American Legion is demanding answers from the Veterans Administration after hospitals in three states placed restrictions on Christian volunteers, including a group of schoolchildren who were told they could only perform Christmas carols from a government-approved list.

"Every Christmas, every religious holiday, Christians are more and more often targeted for censorship and restriction at VA facilities," American Legion National Commander Daniel Dellinger said. "Veterans in these hospitals fought to protect such freedoms."

In Iowa City, American Legion members were told they could not hand out presents to veterans if the wrapping paper said Merry Christmas.

In Augusta, Ga., the VA told a group of students from a Christian school that they could not sing religious-themed Christmas carols. Instead, the students were presented with a list of government-approved, secular songs.

And in Dallas, the VA hospital refused to allow children to distribute Christmas cards to patients because the cards included phrases like "Merry Christmas" and "God Bless You."

The American Legion has asked the VA Central Office for an explanation of why it appears Christians are being singled out for restrictions.

"First of all, VA's decision to prohibit the delivery of Christmas cards that mention Christmas is ludicrous, Dellinger said. "Second of all, VA has been down this road before, and recently. VA has been warned through a federal court decree to stop denying freedom of religious expression at its facilities. Its pretty obvious the Dallas VA did not get that memo."

On Monday morning boys and girls from Grace Academy in Prosper, Tex., were planning on hand delivering the cards to the wounded veterans. Math teacher Susan Chapman called the hospital to make final arrangements and thats when she learned there was a problem.

"I told him my students made cards, we'd like to bring them down for the veterans," Chapman told MyFoxDFW.com. "And he said, 'That's great. We're thrilled to have them, except the only thing is, we can't accept anything that says Merry Christmas' or God bless you' or any scriptural references because of all the red tape.'"

A VA official quoted the policy which is in the Veterans Health Administration handbook:

Western Dems blast NSA surveillance

Posted: at 7:42 am

Western Democrats on the ballot in 2014 are strongly condemning the National Security Agency.

Montana Lt. Gov. John Walsh, a candidate for Senate who is likely to be appointed when Sen. Max Baucus (D) becomes ambassador to China, is the latest in a long line of Democrats to protest, releasing a statement Friday that blasted a federal judges ruling that the NSAs bulk collection of phone records is legal.

Outspoken criticism of NSA programs allows potentially vulnerable incumbents to distance themselves from a president whose popularity is sagging while scoring points with liberals and appealing to the regions libertarian streak.

The NSAs massive collection of law-abiding Americans phone records chips away at our fundamental right to privacy, Walsh said. Fighting decisions like this is why I am running for the U.S. Senate because Montanans deserve a leader who has the courage to secure our nation without sacrificing freedoms.

Alaska Sen. Mark Begich (D) is building his mailing list with a petition on his campaigns web site urging Congress to immediately stop the call-collection program.

(Also on POLITICO: Judge rules NSA phone tracking legal)

This is an enormous invasion of every Alaskans right to privacy, Begichs web site says. The government should not have the ability to collect our information without a warrant.

Colorado Sen. Mark Udall (D) went on ABCs This Week Sunday to urge President Barack Obama to consider all 46 of the recommendations in a report addressing the collection of phone data.

It doesnt fit the standard in the Fourth Amendment of unreasonable search and seizure, he said of the program.

Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley (D) has been one of the most vocal boosters of more congressional oversight of NSA. Hes pushed legislation, with bipartisan support, that would prevent the government from keeping FISA court interpretations of the law secret.

The Posthuman Organisation

Posted: at 7:41 am

I have explored and written about posthuman ideas since the late 1980's and have discussed with many people the validity of particular views of the future. One debate concerns the Trans-human 500 year transition period claim versus the opinion shared by me that some of us in the developed world are already Posthuman(our skeletons are now a different shape from homo-sapiens of the C19th and C20th D-shaped not round). The Industrial Revolution was the trans stage. Posthuman NOW!!

Another topic concerns whether or not the Singularity idea is valid, and how many of Kurzweils predictions hold truth. No one of us has a complete and accurate picture of the future, and all of the competing options need space to develop. To this ends, I am making this page into a set of LINKS to a representative sample of various interested parties. These organisations do not necessarily share my own views or those of others on this list. Sorry if I've missed anybody, please send me your URL.
