China accuses hackers for Internet disruption; experts suspect censors

Posted: January 23, 2014 at 12:45 am

A mysterious glitch in China led to one of the biggest-ever Internet blackouts on Tuesday, forcing massive volumes of Chinese Web traffic to U.S. servers belonging to a firm with a long history of protesting the government in Beijing and evading its censors.

The disruption, which crippled service for most of Chinas roughly 600 million Internet users, began abount 3 p.m. in Beijing (2a.m. EST) and lasted as long as eight hours, according to Compuware, a Detroit-based firm that monitors Web performance.

The official China Internet Network Information Center said the disruption was probably the result of a hacking attack, but Internet experts said that the cause appears to have been a flawed effort by Chinese Web censors part of what is known as the Great Firewall of China to block sites the government deems subversive.

But instead of censoring, the government appears to have momentarily shut down much of the countrys access to the Internet by mistakenly directing all of that Web traffic to servers controlled by Dynamic Internet Technology, a U.S. software company founded by anti-censorship activist Bill Xia.

Xia said in an e-mail that the disruption, which crashed his servers, was caused by Chinas hijacking system, which is part of Chinas Great Firewall. Xia, who moved to the United States from China in the late 1990s, sells software and services to Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, the U.S.-based organization Human Rights in China and Epoch Times, a newspaper published by the Falun Gong religious group.

This incident both communicates the fragility of the Chinese Internet but it also reminds us how robust and resilient their censorship has been, said James Mulvenon, director of Defense Group Inc.s center for intelligence research and analysis.

The Great Firewall works in myriad ways to control what Chinese Internet users can see online, from obstructing searches on sensitive topics such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests to blocking entire Web sites, such as social media sites Facebook and Twitter.

The Chinese government blocks sites by exploiting a weakness in the infrastructure of the Internet. Lets say a user is trying to reach a site by entering the domain name for instance, Facebook.com into a browser. Ordinarily, that request gets sent to whats known as a DNS server, which matches the domain name to an IP address, a series of digits that computers can use to identify each other.

Internet experts say Chinas Great Firewall works by redirecting traffic to erroneous or fake IP addresses. But in the case of Tuesdays glitch, something seemed to go wrong.

A massive amount of traffic was diverted to 65.49.2.178, an IP address affiliated with Xias Dynamic Internet Technology, a group whose work is routinely censored by the Chinese government.

China Internet outage redirects users to anti-censorship site

Posted: at 12:45 am

Hundreds of millions of Internet users in China were unexpectedly shown a way to overcome the communist countrys strict firewalls on Tuesday afternoon.

The users were simply attempting to access some of the countrys most popular websites. When they typed in the addresses, they were automatically redirected to the homepage of Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT), a U.S. company that sells anti-censorship technology that allows Chinese citizens to get around the so-called Great Firewall.

It is unclear whether the situation was the work of savvy hackers or the result of some kind of glitch in the Great Firewall.

Reuters reports that DIT has ties to the Falun Gong, a spiritual group banned in China that has been blamed for past hacking attacks.

I dont know who did this or where it came from, but what I want to point out is this reminds us once again that maintaining Internet security needs strengthened international cooperation. This again shows that China is a victim of hacking," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a daily news briefing.

The state-run China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said the attack on the countrys Internet is under investigation, the official CCTV broadcaster wrote on its microblog on Wednesday.

However, sources familiar with the Chinese governments web management operations told Reutersthat a hacking attack was not to blame for the malfunction. They declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.

They said the incident may have been the result of an engineering mistake made while making changes to the Great Firewall.

Our investigation shows very clearly that DNS exclusion happened at servers inside of China, said Xiao Qiang, an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley School of Information and an expert on Chinas Internet controls.

It all points to the Great Firewall, because thats where it can simultaneously influence DNS resolutions of all the different networks [in China]. But how that happened or why that happened were not sure. Its definitely not the Great Firewalls normal behavior.

Ron Paul: "Warfare, Welfare, And Wonder Woman: How Congress Spends Your Money"

Posted: at 12:44 am

Submitted by Ron Paul via the Ludwig von Mises Institute blog,

Supporters of warfare, welfare, and Wonder Woman cheered last week as Congress passed a one trillion dollar omnibus appropriation bill. This legislation funds the operations of government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Wonder Woman fans can cheer that buried in the bill was a $10,000 grant for a theater program to explore the comic book heroine.

That is just one of the many outrageous projects buried in this 1,582-page bill. The legislation gives the Department of Education more money to continue nationalizing education via common core. Also, despite new evidence of Obamacares failure emerging on an almost daily basis, the Omnibus bill does nothing to roll back this disastrous law.

Even though the Omnibus bill dramatically increases government spending, it passed with the support of many self-described fiscal conservatives. Those wondering why anyone who opposes increasing spending on programs like common core and Obamacare would vote for the bill, may find an answer in the fact that the legislation increases funding for the Overseas Continuing Operations which is the official name for the war budget for the first time since 2010. This $85 billion war budget contains $6 billion earmarked for projects benefiting Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, and other big defense contractors.

Ever since sequestration went into effect at the beginning of last year, the military-industrial complexs congressional cheering session has complained that sequestration imposed draconian cuts on the Pentagon that will decimate our military even though most of the cuts were actually reductions in the projected rate of growth. In fact, under sequestration, defense spending was to increase by 18 percent over ten years, as opposed to growing by 20 percent without sequestration.

Many of the defenders of increased war spending are opponents of welfare, but they are willing to set aside their opposition to increased welfare spending in order to increase warfare spending. They are supported in this position by the lobbyists for the military-industrial complex and the neoconservatives, whose continued influence on foreign policy is mystifying. After all, the neocons were the major promoters of the disastrous military intervention in Iraq.

While many neocons give lip service to limiting domestic spending, their main priority remains protecting high levels of military spending to maintain an interventionist foreign policy. The influence of the neocons provides intellectual justification for politicians to vote for ever-larger military budgets and break the campaign promises to vote against increases in spending and debt.

Fortunately, in recent years more Americans have recognized that a constant defense of liberty requires opposing both war and welfare. Many of these Americans, especially the younger ones, have joined the intellectual and political movement in favor of limiting government in all areas. This movement presents the most serious challenge the bipartisan welfare-warfare consensus has faced in generations. Hopefully, the influence of this movement will lead to bipartisan deals cutting both welfare and warfare spending.

The question facing Americans is not whether Congress will ever cut spending. The question is will the spending be reduced in an orderly manner that avoids inflecting massive harm on those depending on government programs, or will spending be slashed in response to an economic crisis caused by ever-increasing levels of deficit spending. Because politicians are followers rather than leaders, it is ultimately up to the people what course we will take. This is why it is vital that those of us who understand the dangerous path we are currently on do all we can to expand the movement for liberty, peace, and prosperity.

Rand Paul Is the 2016 Republican Frontrunner

Posted: at 12:44 am

Don't laugh. He has built-in advantages in Iowa and New Hampshire, a party moving in his direction, and formidable fundraising potential.

If Chris Christie was ever the frontrunner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, he isnt anymore. All along, the theory behind his candidacy was that he could overcome his lack of conservative bona fides with a combination of personality, competence, electability, and money. Bridgegate undermines all four.

In the minds of many voters, Christies personality has morphed from brash to bully. Its harder to look competent when your top aides egregiously abused power under your nose. Christies supposed electability was based partly on polls showing that he was the only potential Republican nominee running even with Hillary Clinton. But Marist and Quinnipiac, whose surveys showed Clinton and Christie virtually tied in December, now show him trailing her by 13 and 8 points, respectively. The electability argument also depended on Christies supposed success in bringing New Jerseyans together across party lines, a harder claim now that Democrats in the state legislature are talking impeachment. And as Christies electability erodes, so will his vaunted support among GOP moneymen. As a Republican insider recently told BuzzFeeds McKay Coppins, There are definitely people jumping ship.

So if Christie is no longer the candidate to beat in the 2016 Republican race, who is? Believe it or not, its Rand Paul.

To understand the Kentucky senators hidden strength, its worth remembering this basic fact about the modern GOP: It almost never nominates first-time candidates. Since 1980, George W. Bush is the only first-timer to win a Republican nomination. And since Bush used the political network his father built, he enjoyed many of the benefits of someone who had run before. Its the same with Paul. In both Iowa and New Hampshire, he begins with an unparalleled infrastructure left over from his father Ron Pauls 2008 and 2012 campaigns.

Start with Iowa. Last May, Rand Paul gave the keynote speech at the Iowa Republican Partys annual Lincoln Day Dinner. How did he secure this prize invitation? Because the chairman, co-chairman, and finance chairman of the Iowa Republican Party all supported his father. Rand Pauls not the only potential 2012 candidate who will inherit a political infrastructure in the Hawkeye State. Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee also have networks left over from prior runs. But their supporters dont play as influential a role in the state GOP. RPI no longer stands for the Republican Party of Iowa, noted a recent article in Politico, but for Rand Paul, Inc.

Because the Iowa GOP will elect new leaders next spring, its unlikely Paulestinians will so thoroughly dominate the party leadership in 2016. But Craig Robinson, former political director of the Iowa GOP, says thats actually to Rand Pauls advantage, since it will free up some of Iowas most powerful Republicans to run his 2016 campaign. The Iowa caucuses are, famously, a test of organization. And for that reason, Robinson argues, Rand Paul has a huge advantage in this state. Theres an organization built that has grown and been able to be maintained for four to six years. Thats a headstart. Theres no other candidate who has something like that. Its almost like having the advantage of having run before.

Despite his organizational strength, Ron Pauls libertarian views capped his support in Iowa, preventing him from winning over more traditional conservatives. But in 2016, Rand Paul will be less of an ideological outlier than his father was in 2012. Thats partly because he has avoided some of his fathers edgier views. (Hes more supportive of foreign aid and sanctions against Iran, for instance.) And its partly because more Republicans now share his suspicion of the national-security state. Last summer, more than 40 percent of House Republicans voted to curb NSA data collection. Rand has a much broader appeal than his father, Robinson says. Polls reflect that: A survey last December for the Des Moines Register found Paul with a lower unfavorability rating among Iowa Republicans than either Christie or Jeb Bush.

If Paul is, arguably, the early leader in Iowa, he may be the early frontrunner in New Hampshire as well. While Ron Paul placed third in Iowa in 2012, he placed second in New Hampshire, losing only to Mitt Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts and a national frontrunner with a vast financial edge. Even before Bridgegate, Christie would have struggled to match Romneys success. Dante Scala, associate professor of political science at the University of New Hampshire, notes that in 2012 Romney had two advantages that Christie wont have this time around. First, he had a preexisting network in the state, built during his 2008 run. Second, since he was no longer a sitting governor, he had virtually unlimited time to campaign.

Now, of course, Christies chances of matching Romneys New Hampshire success look even dimmer. Most pre-Bridgegate polls showed Christie and Rand Paul virtually tied atop the prospective GOP field in the state. Post-Bridgegate, Paul looks like the stronger of the two.
