Ted Nugents greatest, if not so melodic, hits
Posted: February 21, 2014 at 7:42 pm
Ted Nugent, poet laureate of the politically incorrect, is no stranger to making waves with his unorthodox political analysis. His insults and curse-laced soliloquies dot the news so often that they've basically been rendered white noise, but every once in awhile he says something that either causes the politicians affiliated with him to shake their head in sympathy or denounce him.

After Nugent called President Obama a "subhuman mongrel" last week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry responded by sayingThats Ted Nugent . Thats just Ted. Anybody thats offended sorry, but thats just Ted." Perry later said that Nugent should apologize. Rand Paul took the opposite tack of distancing himself from the singer of "Wango Tango," ranked seventh on Guitar World's list of 100 Worst Guitar Solos.
Many other Republican politicians have followed suit. Nugent responded in kind Friday:"I apologize for using the term. I will try to elevate my vernacular to the level of those great men that I'm learning from in the world of politics."
Here's a very long list of the other times Nugent said things that Republican politicians would probably rather he hadn't.
Nugent says congrats to President Obama after his reelection in 2012:
Nugent analyzes Obama's 2013 State of the Union speech:You just cant get more of a predictable flowery script. And every time he is done speaking he either does just the opposite or nothing at all.
Nugent floats the idea of starting an American Revolution sequel: "I'm part of a very great experiment in self-government where we the people determine our own pursuit of happiness and our own individual freedom and liberty, not to be confused with the Barack Obama gang who believes in we the sheeple and actually is attempting to re-implement the tyranny of King George that we escaped from in 1776.And if you want another Concord Bridge, I got some buddies."
Nugent unleashes all his favorite adjectives in an analysis of the president: "I have obviously failed to galvanize and prod, if not shame enough Americans to be ever vigilant not to let a Chicago communist-raised, communist-educated, communist-nurtured subhuman mongrel like the acorn community organizer gangster Barack Hussein Obama to weasel his way into the top office of authority in the United States of America."
Nugent earns an audience with the Secret Service: "If you want more of those kinds of evil anti-American people in the Supreme Court, then dont get involved and let Obama take office again. Because Ill tell you this right now: if Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year. ...But if you cant go home and get everybody in your lives to clean house in this vile, evil, America-hating administration I dont know what youre made of. If you cant galvanize and promote and recruit people to vote for Mitt Romney were done. Well be a suburb of Indonesia next year. ...Our president, and attorney general, our vice president, Hillary Clinton, theyre criminals, theyre criminals. And if you take that adamant we the people defiance, remember were Americans because we defied the king. We didnt negotiate and compromise with the king, we defied the emperors. We are patriots, we are bravehearts. We need to ride into that battlefield, and chop their heads off in November."

Industry insiders discuss censorship in the cinema
Posted: at 7:42 pm
From local independent productions to Hollywood blockbusters, all films screened legally in the Kingdom are subject to government censorship. But what are the boundaries?
While Rithy Panh will be the first Cambodian director to walk down the Oscars red carpet next month, many filmmakers at home are faced with a stickier path: through a good deal of red tape. Some directors report no problems while others have had their releases delayed indefinitely, but one thing is for certain: no film can be shown in Cambodias cinemas unless the government says so.
Under Cambodian law, every feature film released in the Kingdom must be approved by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts film censorship board. Such scrutiny is normal in the region, with every ASEAN state exercising direct film censorship to some degree, while government censorship in Western nations is usually only reserved for cases of extreme obscenity, such as depictions of pedophilia, bestiality or real-life violence.
For local productions in Cambodia, scripts must also be submitted prior to filming. If the film is rejected at either stage, it cannot be legally screened in Cambodia. Cambodian film censors have most recently held up the release of Martin Scorseses The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo Dicaprio, which contains graphic sex scenes, drug use and more than 500 uses of the word f***.
Chhay Bora has directed two movies since becoming a filmmaker in 2010. PHOTO SUPPLIED
But filmmaker Chhay Bora, who directed the yet-to-be released 3.50, said that the censorship board has never explained to him their grounds for evaluating movies.
Its like walking in the jungle with no road map to follow, said Bora, whose film on sex trafficking was supposed to be released last October but never received final approval. Although his script was approved, Bora said that the censorship board has failed to reach a verdict on the final version. No specific cuts have been ordered by the ministry, he said, but feedback he received suggested that censorship board members were concerned about the movies heavy social commentary.
The Ministry of Culture film department said they didnt ban the film, but they didnt grant the licence yet, said Bora, adding that although the films dialogue did not seem to cause controversy, the censorship board expressed concern over not less than 10 shots. Some of the criticism, Bora said, was over shots that the board claimed represented Cambodia in a bad light, such as a taxi driver throwing a cigarette out the window and a scene within the impoverished White Building community on Sothearos Boulevard.
Bora also said that other scenes were too political for the censors comfort, such as a shot of a character walking down a dusty road with Prime Minister Hun Sens office visible in the background.
But it is not just edgy, socially provocative films that are sent to the censors. Sok Visal, whose debut feature film Gems on the Run premiered last December, said that the censorship board was never hostile to his project but expected a clean moral message for his family-friendly comedy, which involves two friends transporting $3 million of stolen gems. Since the plot features a police officer working with criminals, Visal made sure his script approached the subject with care.

NAU interdisciplinary conference tackles censorship
Posted: at 7:42 pm
Northern Arizona Universitys Graduate English Organization is hosting the 14th Annual Peaks Interdisciplinary Conference this weekend.
The topic of the conference is Censorship and Silence: Reading Between the Lines. According to the conference website, the purpose of the 14th Annual Peaks Interdisciplinary Conference is to strike sparks regarding censorship and silence in the interdisciplinary arena.
Whether we consider banned media, silenced groups, or even small acts of passivity, reading between the lines of the spoken and unspoken is becoming increasingly necessitated in todays society, the conference website states.
The keynote speaker will be NAU Spanish professor and Director of Latin American Studies Robert Neustadt.
In his presentation, titled Looking Beyond the Wall: Encountering the Humanitarian Crisis on the Border with Students, Neustadt will describe the field trips he has been taking with students to the Arizona-Mexico border since 2010.
Topics will include the environmental, financial, political and humanitarian costs of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, as well as the us versus them perspective on undocumented immigration and how experiential education can break down barriers.
The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Room 120 in the Liberal Arts Building.
The Peaks Conference will run today through Sunday in the Liberal Arts Building, which is Building 18 on the NAU campus. Attendance is free to the public.
More information and a complete schedule of events is available online at peaksconference.weebly.com.

Censored in Beijing: a correspondent watches himself fade to black
Posted: at 7:42 pm
The Monitor's Peter Ford knows censorship happens all the time on his China beat. But when it happened to him in an interview with CNN, he felt punched in the gut.
Its not as if Ive been physically assaulted, I grant you. But I certainly feel violated that nauseous sensation when you realize your home has been burgled.

Ive been censored.
One moment I was on the TV screen, a guest of CNNs On China talk show discussing press freedom in China, and the next I wasnt. The screen went black. The Chinese censors had pulled the plug. Where there was light, they brought darkness. Nobody in mainland China could watch the program.
Well of course, you will say. You are in China. What do you expect? The freedom to talk publicly about the lack of freedom?
And, of course, I know perfectly well that almost all of my Chinese colleagues are censored, or forced to self-censor, every day.
But this was my first time. And the first time is different.
As well as my day job being The Christian Science Monitors correspondent in China, I am also president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China. That means people come to me when they want to know about foreign correspondents working conditions in China.

Carl Bernstein and Ron Paul to speak in April at Penn State
Posted: at 7:41 pm
Details are being finalized for an event featuring investigative journalist Carl Bernstein and politician Ron Paul on April 15 at Eisenhower Auditorium, Chairman of the Penn State College Republicans Jordan Harris said.
It will be more of a discussion than a debate that was between Gibbs and Gingrich [last year], but [Bernstein and Paul] will offer many points of contrast related to different issues on American policy, Harris (senior-history and economics) said.
John Wortman, UPUA off-campus representative and vice chair of student life, said he is looking forward to having Bernstein and Paul on campus.
Ron Paul is a revolutionary one of the most popular political figures for college students across the country, Wortman (sophomoresecondary social studies education) said. Bernstein, in his own right, is a phenomenal man and a phenomenal journalist.
Wortman said UPUA is hoping to co-sponsor the event with the Penn State College Republicans and Penn State College Democrats and that legislation will likely be on the floor next Wednesday to approve co-sponsoring the event.
UPUA has been looking into this event since last years debate between Newt Gingrich and Robert Gibbs, which sold out Schwab Auditorium, Wortman said.
[UPUA] realizes the importanceof creating a discussion on campus, said Wortman, who anticipates the event will not be a debate but a conversation between the speakers.
Wortman said they are expecting a high turnout for the event and said he believes they will sell out Eisenhower Auditorium.
Nadia Lehtihet, president of the Penn State College Democrats, also said she is looking forward to a high turnout to the event.
Its a really good event to get students thinking about the governors race, Lehtihet (juniorbiochemistry and molecular biology) said. [The event] should generate a lot of excitement for May and November.

Carl Bernstein and Ron Paul to speak at Penn State
Posted: at 7:41 pm
Final details are in the works to bring investigative journalist Carl Bernstein and politician Ron Paul to Penn State in April, Chairman of the College Republicans Jordan Harris said.
Harris said the speaking event will be a follow-up to last years debate organized by the College Republicans between Newt Gingrich and Robert Gibbs, however this years event will be more discussion-style.
It will be more of a discussion than a debate that was between Gibbs and Gingrich [last year], but [Bernstein and Paul] will offer many points of contrast related to different issues on American policy, Harris (senior - history and economics) said.
Harris said he hopes to bring Bernstein and Paul to speak on April 15, which is also Tax Day in the U.S.
He said he expects the event to be held in Eisenhower Auditorium, but the location has not been finalized yet.
This is a chance for College Democrats and Republicans and UPUA and different organizations to come together again to provide this service for the student body, and last year, the reception from the student body was great, Harris said.
Funding for the event has also not been finalized yet, Harris said, but he added that he has organized more than 12 events through the College Republicans and has never failed to get funding.
Read Friday's edition of The Daily Collegian for more details.
