The James Webb Space Telescope Is Going to Stare Straight Into Jupiter – Futurism

After launching late last year, NASAs revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope is finally getting ready to fixate its numerous golden mirrors on distant targets.

Intriguingly, though, one of its 13 early targets isnt so distant at all at least in the grand scheme of things. Itll be looking at Jupiter, the iconic gas giant in our own star system. Of course, we already know quite a bit about the planet already so why investigate it using the JWST if it can have a closer look at far more distant objects?

Weve been there with several spacecraft and have observed the planet with Hubble and many ground-based telescopes at wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum (from the UV to meters wavelengths), Berkeley astronomer Imke de Pater, leader of the Jupiter observation team, told Digital Trends, so weve learned a tremendous amount about Jupiter itself, its atmosphere, interior, and about its moons and rings.

But every time you learn more there are things you dont yet understand so you always need more data, she added.

For instance, we still dont know how an awful lot about the gas giants atmosphere, with massive storms roiling on its surface. The planets Great Red Spot, in particular, has fascinated astronomers since its discovery in 1830.Its a storm so massive, in fact, that you could easily fit the Earth in the area it takes up.

Well be looking for signatures of any chemical compounds that are unique to the [Great Red Spot] which could be responsible for the red chromophores, Leigh Fletcher, senior research fellow in planetary science at the University of Leicester in the UK, said in a 2018 NASA statement about the project, referring to particles responsible for the storms unusually red color.

If we dont see any unexpected chemistry or aerosol signatures then the mystery of that red color may remain unresolved, Fletcher added.

The JSWT will also take a closer look at Jupiters moons Io and Ganymede, the latter being the only known moon that has its own magnetosphere.

The space telescope is the ideal candidate for the job.

The biggest advantage is at the mid-infrared wavelengths, de Pater told Digital Trends. We can observe at some of these wavelengths from the ground, but the Earths atmosphere is so turbulent that what we get on the ground, we cant calibrate the observations very well.

Right now, the JSWT is still busy aligning its mirrors but soon, itllfinally be prime time.

In the first year of science operations, we expect Webb to write entirely new chapters in the history of our origins the formation of stars and planets, Klaus Pontoppidan, the Space Telescope Science Institute project scientist for Webb, said in a recent NASA blog post.

Before gazing at Jupiter, the observatorys Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) will have to be cooled to about 7 Kelvin, or about -447 Fahrenheit, to adjust to its frosty surroundings in deep space.

But once its ready, astronomers are already excited about what it will be able to see.

The imager promises to reveal astronomical targets ranging from nearby nebulae to distant interacting galaxies with a clarity and sensitivity far beyond what weve seen before, Alistair Glasse, Webb-MIRI Instrument Scientist at the Astronomy Technology Center in the UK, said in a recent post.

And considering its proximity, Jupiter should be childs play for the JWST.

Updated to correct an error in the temperature the James Webbs MIRI instrument will eventually be cooled to.

Tokyos once-futuristic Nakagin Capsule Tower to be demolished – Digital Trends

A short walk from Tokyos upmarket Ginza district stands a unique building that for decades has been a magnet for architecture fans and curious tourists.

Tokyos Nakagin Capsule Tower was designed by the late Kisho Kurokawa and built in 1972. The extraordinary structure is a rare example of Japans post-war Metabolism movement that combined modern architectural thinking with ideas of organic biological growth.

But in just a few days from now, the iconic building will be torn down.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower, which to some resembles a precarious stack of front-loading washing machines, has been showing its age in recent years, and despite the long-running efforts of preservationists to save it, work on demolishing the structure will begin on April 12.

The buildings 140 or so capsules, each measuring around 10 square meters, were built off-site and then bolted onto two concrete shafts. Kurokawa suggested at the outset that the capsules should be replaced with new designs every 25 years, but in the end none were removed.

Although it began life as an accommodation block, over the years, as the building became more outdated and harder to maintain, some of the capsules began to be used for storage and office space, as well as more offbeat activities befitting of its quirky design.

Some of the capsules have been modernized, while others retain their original features, including the technology that in the early 1970s wouldve been considered cutting edge.

Although the Nakagin Capsule Tower will soon cease to exist in its complete state, its architectural significance means that some of the capsules will be saved and put on display in museums in Japan and around the world. Many, however, are sad to see the structure go, all too aware that Tokyo and the world of architecture are losing something really rather special.

Thanks to the recent trip back to our beloved Y2K eraand its fascination with futurismtheres a new nail trend rising to the surface. Known for its chrome-style finish, the look is essentially like a mirror on your nail beds and gives off a dystopian aura to any look.

Celebrities and Instagram It-girlshello, Dua Lipahave all donned the trend in whether it be through their social media grid or when attending award shows, and the manicure trend looks to be going nowhere any time soon.

For most, the mirror manicure could come across as daunting, but lo and behold, your nails wont actually reflect an image. In fact, if youre less keen on a full-nail coverage, your digits dont have to be. The trend can be achieved in different ways, with iterations of the manicure ranging from a subtle chrome french tip to a dipped mirror effect.

And there arent any rules on colour either, you can opt for metal-like silver tones or a rich and decadent gold hue. The best part? While the less confident manicure mavens can head straight to their closest nail technician, this trend can actually be done at home.

First, the most important step in any manicure routine is to prepare your nails. Essentially, prepping your nails includes trimming, filing and shaping the nails how you prefer them. But dont forget to buff the nail bed back, since gel wont stick to shiny nails.

Next, apply your first coat of nail polish. For gel polish users, now is the time to apply your primer and set. Then, go in with your preferred base coat and cure with a UV or LED lamp until dry.

Once your polish is applied, heres where the chrome comes in. To apply your chrome pigment, which is what gives your digits the mirror-like shine youre after, reach for a brush, either the one the pigment came with or a firm eyeshadow brush youre happy to part with. Then, press the brush into the chrome pigment and swipe from the base of the nail to the tip, avoiding the cuticle and skin as much as possible.

When the chrome pigment begins to reflect light la a mirror, then the pigment has done its job. To finish off the look, apply your favourite top coat and let cure under your UV or LED lamp. Apply a nourishing nail oil to your cuticles and digits once dry, and voil!

And as we said, if creating your own mirror manicure isnt your strong suit, theres no shame in heading to your local manicurist.

How the changing dynamics of agriculture in India is paving the way for a new futuristic model – Times of India

The dichotomy of Indian agriculture is unique. India ranks second in terms of global food production and, at the same time, is home to the worlds largest undernourished population. Agriculture provides livelihood to more than 50% of the population, yet contributes less than 20% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Even after seven decades since independence, Indian farmers continue to battle low productivity and profitability. Considering the complexity of Indian agriculture, a single policy or technology cannot reform the agricultural sector.

However, consistent digital transformation efforts along with government incentives and intervention can strengthen the agricultural model in India. In the past few years, the agriculture landscape in India has witnessed a spike in innovative inventions, use of technology and improved farming models. An influx of investments, AgriTech startups and innovation are bent on changing the dynamics of Indian agriculture and paving the way for a futuristic model.

Farm diversification for supplementing income

The state of small and marginal farmers in India has been dismal, struggling with inadequate farmlands, low incomes and mounting debts. As per the stats 100 million farmers out of 140 million own less than an acre of land, while many others own less than 2 acres. These farmers depend on mono-crop culture, wavering weather, informal lenders and fluctuating output prices. And farmers who seek to venture into aquaculture or animal husbandry dont have appropriate investments, marketing channels and knowledge.

But with the advent of AgriTech startups and digital tools, many Indian farmers are supplementing their income with farm diversification. These startups are empowering farmers to integrate livestock rearing and aquaculture into their existing operations with micro-farm installation requiring minimum space and labour. Non-crop diversification is helping farmers increase and earn round-the-year income, improve productivity and profitability and adopt sustainable farming systems.

Improving digital & market connectivity

Before the internet and smartphones, farmers could only access their local or closest markets, often suffering low returns for their produce. Moreover, due to a lack of storage infrastructure, farmers were forced to sell their produce at the first price offered. However, with ever-increasing internet and smartphone penetration, digital connectivity is reaching Indian villages. As a result, farmers can access a slew of information about farming inputs, climate conditions and market prices. It has further improved the market linkage of farmers, who can now sell their produce at higher prices. Many AgriTech startups are increasing awareness among the farming communities and connecting them to a network of traders, retailers and exporters willing to buy their produce at higher prices.

Availability of affordable & innovative farming inputs

Currently, the market for farming inputs in India is highly unorganized and a majority of farmers have to deal with middlemen to procure materials. Thus, they end up paying premium prices or borrowing money for farming inputs. However, technological improvements and competition among private companies have led to a surge in the supply of quality and affordable farming inputs. Consequently, farmers can order innovative inputs, better seeds and fertilizers, customized farm machinery and feed for animals online at cost-effective prices. Technological advances in supply chain platforms have also resulted in the supply of high-quality live input materials to farmers engaged in livestock rearing and aquaculture.

Formal Credit Inclusion

For ages, Indian farmers have been stuck in a vicious loop of low income, piling debts and lack of formal credit, thereby resorting to high-interest rate charging moneylenders. But with the emergence of Fintech and AgriTech startups, the lending landscape of the country is changing. Previously underserved small and marginal farmers can now secure loans from formal institutions at low-interest rates. A plethora of easy financing options and government initiatives have alleviated the burden of interest on farmers. With accessible and affordable credit, farmers can adopt entrepreneurial strategies.

The road to digital agriculture

The initiation of the Digital Agriculture Mission by the government is set to pave the way for a new and futuristic farming model in India. The use of technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), remote sensing, drones and robots can improve agriculture production, profitability and sustainability. A unified AgriStack platform will provide farmers with end-to-end services and timely technological and data interventions. A robust digital infrastructure can help revolutionize Indias agricultural landscape. By arming farmers with information and technology, India can achieve twin benefits of profitability and sustainability.

Reaching a peak of 7.3 million average players in July 2021, Overwatch is still played by millions of gamers per month even six years after its release. But its long-awaited sequel is on the way, with Overwatch 2 set to begin beta testing on April 26.

Overwatch teased the new Toronto map along with others in an Instagram post shared on Thursday, the four new Overwatch 2 PvP maps debuting in the April 26 Beta test. And it's packed with fun easter eggs that locals will recognize.

Local landmarks like City Hall and the CN Tower are included in a futuristic version of the city with a distinctive art style, but there are other fabulous finds for those willing to look closer.

A streetside advertisement displays a burly lumberjack type (with bionic arms for futuristic effect) holding a steaming hot cup of coffee with the red branding of....Tom Beansons?

You'll also see trees with red maple leaves, Toronto's iconic Bay and Gable style homes, and the familiar orange and green livery of a Beck Taxi.

"We want players to feel like they time jumped into the future where these cities are in their Golden Era," says Blizzard Entertainment Art Director Dion Rogers.

Rogers explains that "With each map, we are trying to find the 'Golden Moment' through the cities' architectures, culture, visionand we want that to come across in our design."

The press release notes the "warm, welcoming feeling that represents Toronto's multicultural history," which should juxtapose interestingly against the game's shoot-'em-up play style.

What would you change about yourself? Would you change your eye color, hair type, height or the sound of your voice? Maybe you want to become smarter? Funnier? Imagine you could. With human genetic engineering, all the physical and mental traits you desire could become a reality. The only question is: is it morally right?

I believe gene editing or engineering should only be used to cure illnesses and diseases. Designer babies, the ability to change the superficial features of a child, are unethical and should not be conducted. Humans should not change the physical and mental characteristics of their children, but love them as they are.

Human genetic engineering is already possible, and it will soon change the way we think of childbirth and human health. Using a technology called CRISPR, also known as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindrome Repeats, which is defined by Live Science as, a powerful tool for editing genomes, meaning it allows researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function, humans will then have the ability to aesthetically edit the genetic characteristics of an unborn child.

This technology holds unimaginable possibilities. As reported by Tides, a social charity foundation, a person can give a fertility clinic a checklist of characteristics and features they want for their child, scientists then use CRISPR to edit the genes of an embryo accordingly, implant the embryo into the mother for pregnancyand finally, the designer baby is born.

Gene editing was developed for the eradication of diseases and curing of cancer, but it can also be used for creating the child of your dreams. The science is unbelievable and is already being used in controversial ways.

On Nov. 25, 2018, the impossible became possible. A biophysics researcher from China, He Jiankui, shocked the world with the first gene-edited humans. He revealed that he had altered embryos for seven couples during fertility treatmentswith one resulting pregnancy. He was trying to bestow a trait that few people naturally have an ability to resist future infection of HIV, the AIDS virus, according to Associated Press.

Babies Lulu and Nana were the results of Hes gene-editing experiment. Born from an HIV-positive father and HIV-negative mother, the twins are now resistant from contracting the illness their father has. Controversy soon followed the researcher. He is scrutinized by the public for conducting the experiment in secret. Some praised him and called He, the rogue scientist, Chinas Dr. Frankenstein, and a mad genius, as written in the South China Morning Post. The Peoples Court of Shenzhen disagreed with his work, they sentenced him to three years of imprisonment and held him financially responsible for any future genetic complications that might occur in the babies lives. He may have had the best intentions, but he crossed the line of regulated science.

Although Lulu and Nana are the first of many genetically engineered human experiments, gene editing has shown its benefits. The tool has unveiled great opportunities in correcting the course of unfair diseases placed in humans. However, the regulation of gene editing should be a high priority.

The ethics of designer babies needs to be debated. I believe gene editing could negatively affect our future if it is used to aesthetically change children. U.S. News found in 2021 that there are companies offering parents the means of selecting better embryos, although in the form of superficial features has yet to be done. There are some who may use genetic engineering virtuously to prevent hereditary diseases while there are others who may abuse gene editing to design their child with the best attributes. I think it is likely that people will create humans with perfect symmetrical faces and ideal physiques for sports. A child will unfortunately grow up to think that their physical features are what creates their success. These exploitative fantasies could be manipulated into actuality.

Gene editing might also cause major repercussions for religion. There may be some who will find gene editing of a persons exterior to be a defiance against Gods creation. A few branches of Judaism prohibits members from trimming their hair because their body belongs to God and therefore they cannot alter it. I do believe there is a higher being and even though I dont practice this rule, I understand the sentiment. Like many religions, I hold the strong belief that one should not change themselves outwardly but inwardly. Changing the body of a healthy child before they are born is disrespectful toward their creator and their lineage.

Parents considering changing their children to look different from them is also flawed. The traits inherited from previous generations should not be seen as ugly or a mistake. This mindset will only further indoctrinate artificiality and self-hatred into future generations. We all hold a part of our parents within ourselves, we cannot let that go. If we change these genetics, then we are changing something special that connects us with our family. Your genetic material is inherited from hundreds to thousands of previous generations. Genetically modifying it for a superficial reason would counter all of the meaning and history behind that from your ancestors. The gifts of our familys pasts remind us of who were from.

The future reaps the consequences of today. Gene editing is still in its infancy. Going forth with designer babies may give birth to abominable effects on our descendants. One enhancement to the length of our arms could inadvertently mutate the body in a harmful way unknowingly passed down the generations. The harm would only be discovered after it is too late. It is too risky to change the genetic makeup of the most precious thing in life: ourselves.

What needs to be changed is our mentality. Our different eye colors, curly or straight hair, tall or short limbs arent what make us. The power to change these superficial features will not help. As humans, we should not change our children to conform to body standards, but instead, change body standards to conform to us. When you can stop caring about vain appearances, it is only then that we can start caring about what matters. Whats important are the things youve done and the things you are going to do. You arent your body, a shell your soul was born in. You are only who you think you are.

New Zealands genetic engineering laws face a tough challenge from new technology, Justin Giovannetti writes in The Bulletin.

Theres a hole in the wall keeping genetically modified organisms out of New Zealand and its shaped like an impossible burger.As Chris Schulz wrote for The Spinoff, the lab-designed meat is the biggest name in the plant-based craze.However, the impossible burger would be impossible without genetic engineering. The core of the burger is a heme molecule that gives the meat its taste and bleeding character.The Listener (paywalled) also looked at the growth of consumer interest in plant-based alternatives.Aotearoas food safety regulator had to approve the impossible burgers sale here, giving it an exemption to the countrys ban on GMOs. While its not the first genetically engineered technology allowed into the country, its a sign of the growing pressure on Aotearoas laws.

There hasnt been a review of New Zealands laws covering GMOs in over two decades.RNZ reports that the Productivity Commission now warns that current regulations dont reflect 20 years of breakneck technological advances.The commission has recommended that regulations should accomodate new technology and not stifle innovation. The government responded that Aotearoas brand is GMO-free and it wants to maintain a proceed with caution approach to genetic engineering. Theres also little public interest in changing regulations. However, the Productivity Commission is not alone. The Climate Change Commission also recommended last year that the government consider allowing genetic engineering that could cut emissions from agriculture.

GMOs can be a passionate topic and theres no easy way to define the arguments on both sides.Prem Maan, the executive chairman of Lewis Road Creamery and Southern Pastures, wrote a defence of current laws last year.He warned of possible massive damage to the environment from uncontrolled spread of GMOs and said the current ban keeps New Zealands food exports premium, wholesome products. Similar arguments are made every few years, when a new report comes out.Mia Sutherland, a former school strike forclimate organiser, wrote for Stuff that GMOs are the climate option.With the country facing a serious challenge to rapidly slash climate emissions this decade, some genetically engineered grasses could help cut agricultural emissions by nearly half.Newsroom also looks at the advances in science and argues this goes far beyond GMOs, with New Zealand also strictly limiting gene editing.

Its possible that youll be reading a newsletter in another 20 years that also covers the countrys largely GMO-free status. But its unlikely. While theres been tremendous technological change in the 20 years since the countrys last GMO review, the next two decades promise to be even more transformative.Biology is the most important technology of this century, Wired argues in a recent review of whats to come.In ways that already seem unthinkable, technology is being used right now to edit and rewrite life. The future, for better or worse, will be increasingly synthetic.

Precision medicine bypasses the 'one size fits all' approaches that are the same for everyone and develops individual-specific approaches.

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)

CRISPR is a gene editing tool and can be simply compared with a text editor, for a clear understanding. Also known as 'molecular scissors', the technique is used to edit genetic code. CRISPR shines a ray of hope in treating fatal diseases, including cancer and HIV.

Despite its great potential in medical science, the technique holds several apprehensions and questionable applications. Due to this reason, CRISPR is currently considered non-ethical in human beings and is banned in several countries, including the USA.

Gene therapy

Gene therapy involves the insertion of a healthy foreign genetic material into a person's cell to treat a disease. It is a one-shot cure as it corrects the underlying genetic cause of disease.

The first CAR T-cell-based gene therapy got approval in 2017 in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Gene therapies also hold a promising future for cancer treatment.

Sports participation by transgender youth: Providers’ perspectives – EurekAlert

In a new study, providers of care to transgender youth were against the rising tide of legislation restricting participation of transgender youth in gender-segregated sports. Nearly all providers voiced concern that legislation banning transgender youth from sports participation would lead to worsening discrimination and stigmatization, according to the study published in the peer-reviewed journalLGBT Health. Landon Hughes, from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and coauthors, analyzed the responses of 103 providers of pediatric gender-affirming medical care from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Whereas participation in organized sports can benefit physical and mental health, the providers believed that restrictive legislation would increase the number of mental and physical health morbidities among transgender youth. Specifically, providers believed these bills would increase the risks of suicide, depression, nonsuicidal self-injury, anxiety, and gender dysphoria.

All providers in this study believed that these bills should not be passed. Most providers believed that it was their duty to advocate against these bills and educate lawmakers and the public about their harmful effects, stated the investigators.

This study draws attention to a critical current issue. Numerous pending state bills lack nuance and flexibility and will cause much harm if enacted. States should follow California's example in protecting transgender student athletes. While California allows for decisions to be made on a case-by-case basis, its Assembly Bill 1266 stipulates that a pupil shall be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupils records, says LGBT Health Editor-in-ChiefWilliam Byne, MD, PhD, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY.
