Rand Paul wins second consecutive CPAC straw poll

Posted: at 9:44 pm

OXON HILL, Md. -- It's safe to say libertarian hero, former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, has officially passed on the crown: His son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., walked away Saturday for the second consecutive year with the top honor from the annual straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Committee.

Though last year's poll found him in nearly a dead heat with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Rand Paul managed to bring in 31 percent of the 2014 vote, followed distantly by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, with 11 percent. Ben Carson - a neurologist whose rant against President Obama launched him into the conservative stratosphere - clocked in at No. 3 with 9 percent.

It's the making of a hands-off-government political dynasty: Rand Paul's dad, three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul, has twice won the CPAC poll in years past. But the younger Paul, who's emerged as a bona fide conservative star in his own right, offers what is potentially a more realistic tie to the party's establishment base.

For victory, Paul bested a parade of high-profile GOP names, including Cruz, Rubio, Govs. Chris Christie, R-N.J., and Scott Walker, R-Wis., as well as former Sen. and effective 2012 runner-up Rick Santorum. (For the record, write-ins included former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and 1930s President Calvin Coolidge.)

The CPAC straw poll is considered an informative but ultimately insignificant gauge of the enthusiasm of the conservative base - a rough verdict from the right wing on a variety of rising stars in the Republican Party. The winner of the straw poll has occasionally gone on to bigger and better things.

In 2012, during the fiery passion of a contested Republican presidential primary, eventual nominee Mitt Romney won the straw poll with 38 percent of the vote. He also claimed victory in 2009 and 2008.

Rand Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll

Posted: at 9:44 pm

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul won the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday for the second consecutive year.

The freshman senator practically inherited the mantle from his father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, a godfather of the tea party movement who won the poll in 2010 and 2011.When the elder Paul didnt attend in 2012, Mitt Romney won first place, shortly before he secured the GOP nomination.

The younger Paul was expected to win the straw poll after delivering abarnburner of a speechon Friday bashing President Barack Obama for infringing on civil liberties. Mr. Paul hasnt been coy about his potential interest in running for president in 2016 and made a number of visits to early early-primary states. In recent weeks he has invoked the scandals of the Clinton administration to try to tarnish his potential Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. Those attacks have drawn criticism from some fellow Republicans, including former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee after his speech at the conference.

Mr. Paul got 31% of the CPAC vote, followed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 11%, motivational speaker Ben Carson with 9%, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with 8%, and former Sen. Rick Santorum and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with 7%.

Mr. Pauls victory reflects his popularity with young voters. Forty-six percent of the 2,459 voters in the poll were under 25 years old. A large majority said their top concern was promoting individual freedom and slightly more than half said its time for U.S. allies to provide for their own defense.

Rand Paul wins presidential straw poll at Conservative PAC conference

Posted: at 9:44 pm

WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI) -- Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., easily won Saturday's straw presidential poll at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington.

Paul, son of libertarian former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, took 31 percent of the vote from the conference attendees in National Harbor, Md. -- the second straight year he has won their nod for the Republican presidential nomination.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was second with 11 percent, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Paul won over the conservatives on Friday for his views on National Security Agency surveillance programs.

While most speakers on the second day of the three-day conference, many of whom presidential hopefuls, spoke about the Russian intervention in Ukraine's Crimea region, Paul chose to address the expansive surveillance of Americans conducted by the NSA, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"If you have a cellphone, you are under surveillance. I believe what you do on your cellphone is none of their damn business," Paul said. "I don't question President Obama's motives, but history will record his timid defense of liberty."

"Our rights are innate, they come from our creator and no government can take them away from us," he said. "The Constitution merely codifies what exists before all time. Mr. President, we won't let you -- we will not let you run roughshod over our rights. We will challenge you in the courts. We will battle you at the ballot box. Mr. President, we will not let you shred our constitution. Our future hangs in the balance."

Paul's speech garnered the most applause during the conference which wrapped up Saturday with speeches by former House Speaker Newt Ginrich, Carson and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Also during his speech, Paul knocked former President Bill Clinton, calling him a "sexual predator," The Hill reported.

"It is quite hypocritical that a party that says they're great defenders of women in the workplace supports a guy who violated all of those pledges, all of those promises that the workplace is a safer place for women than it has been in the past," he said. "He's a throwback to a sort of troglodyte time, where men did whatever they wanted to women in the workplace."

Brenda Picard welcomes Human Rights post

Brenda Picard has tallied an impressive volunteer record over the years working with many provincial and national organizations relating to family violence prevention, restorative justice and conflict resolution.

Brenda Picard decided way back in Grade 8 she wanted to go to law school one day.

The appeal of the profession, concedes the relatively new executive director of the P.E.I. Human Rights Commission and former long-time legal aid lawyer, was nothing terribly noble at the time.

Looking back, the 51-year-old Mount Stewart resident believes her interest in becoming a lawyer was simply sparked by all the crime shows she had been watching on television at the time while growing up in Kensington.

She went on to enter law school with no specific area of the field in mind in which she might like to pursue. She would. though, eventually get a good diverse taste of the legal profession after receiving her bachelor of laws degree in 1985 from Dalhousie University.

Picard first worked in public legal education, updating and revising material during a short-term contract.

The education component would be a consistent one in her career while her jobs would vary in interesting fashion over the ensuing years.

I always had an interest in being able to share the knowledge and communicate and teach people...to be able to help people in understanding what their options were, says Picard.
