Rand Paul Tops Presidential Straw Poll at Conservative PAC Conference
Posted: at 2:42 pm
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., easily won Saturday's straw presidential poll at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington.
Paul, son of libertarian former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, took 31 percent of the vote from the conference attendees in National Harbor, Md. -- the second straight year he has won their nod for the Republican presidential nomination.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was second with 11 percent, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
Paul won over the conservatives on Friday for his views on National Security Agency surveillance programs.
While most speakers on the second day of the three-day conference, many of whom presidential hopefuls, spoke about the Russian intervention in Ukraine's Crimea region, Paul chose to address the expansive surveillance of Americans conducted by the NSA, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"If you have a cellphone, you are under surveillance. I believe what you do on your cellphone is none of their damn business," Paul said. "I don't question President Obama's motives, but history will record his timid defense of liberty."
"Our rights are innate, they come from our creator and no government can take them away from us," he said. "The Constitution merely codifies what exists before all time. Mr. President, we won't let you -- we will not let you run roughshod over our rights. We will challenge you in the courts. We will battle you at the ballot box. Mr. President, we will not let you shred our constitution. Our future hangs in the balance."
Paul's speech garnered the most applause during the conference which wrapped up Saturday with speeches by former House Speaker Newt Ginrich, Carson and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Also during his speech, Paul knocked former President Bill Clinton, calling him a "sexual predator," The Hill reported.
"It is quite hypocritical that a party that says they're great defenders of women in the workplace supports a guy who violated all of those pledges, all of those promises that the workplace is a safer place for women than it has been in the past," he said. "He's a throwback to a sort of troglodyte time, where men did whatever they wanted to women in the workplace."

5 things we learned from CPAC
Posted: at 2:41 pm
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
National Harbor, Maryland (CNN) -- It would be a mistake to read too much into the speeches, breakout sessions and late-night parties that took place at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.
Thousands of right-leaning activists made the pilgrimage here this year, to a convention hall outside the nation's capital. They were greeted, as they are every year, by a bevy of candidates, bloggers, political operatives and more than a few hucksters out to make a buck.
But it's tough to glean any sweeping insight into the state of the conservative movement just by hanging out at CPAC for a few days and talking to its most rock-ribbed and outspoken partisans.
And yet: The confluence of big name Republican speakers -- many of them potential White House contenders -- makes the three-day event impossible to ignore.
CPAC crowd chants, 'Run, Sarah, run!'
Here are five big takeaways from CPAC 2014:
1. This is Rand's house: Rand Paul's blowout win in the presidential straw poll Saturday -- he won more than a third of the vote, easily besting second-place finisher Ted Cruz -- cemented his place as the King of CPAC.
Rand Paul convincingly wins CPAC straw poll
Paul's address here on Friday, unapologetically heavy with libertarian sentiment, was far and away the best-received speech of the weekend. The room was packed and Paul, wearing jeans, was interrupted repeatedly by standing ovations. After his appearance, he joined his wife, Kelley, across the street from the convention center at a packed restaurant for an open bar happy hour with fired-up supporters.

Faunda named St.?C. post commander
Posted: at 2:40 pm
ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Lt. James Faunda, who grew up in Eastern Ohio, has been named as commander of the St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The position opened after Lt. Jeff LaRoche retired in February.
Recently promoted from sergeant to lieutenant, Faunda has been with the state patrol since 1993 and was transferred to the St. Clairsville Post in 2011. Despite being on the promotion list for several years, he indicated that he was surprised by his recent promotion.
"The thing I like about this promotion, I graduated from River High School (in Hannibal) in 1989 and I grew up in Monroe County," said Faunda. "I am familiar with the area. Basically, I am back home. So the fact that I was able to get promoted to the St. Clairsville Post is actually a blessing."
Becoming a law enforcement officer is something that Faunda always wanted to do. He went into the State Patrol Academy after attending the University of Alabama and Belmont Technical College.
"The Ohio State Highway Patrol had one of the best reputations in law enforcement for professionalism," said Faunda. "It's been a very fulfilling career. Just like anything else, it has its up and downs. We don't like going to people's homes and telling them that their family member has been killed in a crash, but we do get a feeling of satisfaction when we remove an impaired driver from the roadway, when we arrest people that are dealing drugs and even beyond that one of our big focal points is service to the public."
In 21 years as a trooper, Faunda has been transferred to several different posts throughout the state of Ohio. He was first assigned to the Milan Post and it was there, he was selected as "Post Trooper of the Year" in 1997. He then was transferred to the Norwalk Post in 1999, where he was selected as "Post Trooper of the Year" in 2001.
Faunda was promoted to sergeant in 2002 and was transferred to the Bowling Green Post. At the Bowling Green Post, he served as assistant post commander. As a sergeant, he served at the Norwalk Post, Bucyrus District Criminal Patrol, Mansfield Dispatch Center and the Steubenville Post.
Faunda said one of the things that impressed him most about the St. Clairsville Post is the working relationships and communications with local law enforcement agencies, and he plans for this to continue. "The thing that impressed me when I came back home is how well the post and all the agencies in Belmont County worked together," Faunda said. "We have a great working relationship with the sheriff's office and all the police departments in Belmont County, and we also have a great relationship with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Woodsfield and the Woodsfield Police Department."
He thinks that this is an important because all of these agencies have the same job, which is to remove criminals from our highways, cities and towns.
"If all the agencies don't work together, then that just makes that job that much harder," Faunda said. "We are very fortunate in this area."
