Correction: DNA Stool Test-FDA Story

Posted: March 25, 2014 at 10:51 pm

In a story March 24 about colon cancer screening tests, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the Colosure test from LabCorp is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It has not been approved by the agency. The story also incorrectly stated that another test from Epigenomics is a stool test. It is a blood test.

A corrected version of the story is below:

FDA reviews DNA-based colon cancer screening kits

FDA has questions about accuracy of 2 screening tools that use DNA to spot colon cancer

By MATTHEW PERRONE

AP Health Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) The Food and Drug Administration is weighing the benefits and risks of two experimental colon cancer screening tests which use patients' DNA to detect dangerous tumors and growths.

FDA scientists have questions about the accuracy and the potential real-world impact of the kits from Epigenomics and Exact Sciences, according to briefing documents posted online Monday. The agency released its reviews of the tests ahead of a two-day meeting that starts Wednesday. Epigenomics' Epi proColon test uses a blood sample, while Exact Sciences Cologuard uses a stool sample.

Doctors have long used stool tests to look for hidden blood that can be a warning sign of tumors and precancerous polyps. Colon cancer is usually treatable if growths are detected and removed before they multiply and spread to other parts of the body.

Both tests under review were more accurate at detecting tumors and worrisome growths than traditional blood stool tests. However, both tests also returned more false positives reporting growths when none were actually present.

The New York Genome Center and IBM Watson Group Announce Collaboration to Advance Genomic …

IBM Selected as First Technology Partner for Leading Genomic Research Institution; Project aims to Apply Advanced Analytics to Genomic Treatment Options for Brain Cancer Patients

NEW YORK - The New York Genome Center (NYGC) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced an initiative to accelerate a new era of genomic medicine with the use of IBM's Watson cognitive system. IBM and NYGC will test a unique Watson prototype designed specifically for genomic research as a tool to help oncologists deliver more personalized care to cancer patients.

NYGC and its medical partner institutions plan to initially evaluate Watson's ability to help oncologists develop more personalized care to patients with glioblastoma, an aggressive and malignant brain cancer that kills more than 13,000 people in the U.S. each year. Despite groundbreaking discoveries into the genetic drivers of cancers like glioblastoma, few patients benefit from personalized treatment that is tailored to their individual cancer mutations. Clinicians lack the tools and time required to bring DNA-based treatment options to their patients and to do so, they must correlate data from genome sequencing to reams of medical journals, new studies and clinical records -- at a time when medical information is doubling every five years.

This joint NYGC Watson initiative aims to speed up this complex process, identifying patterns in genome sequencing and medical data to unlock insights that will help clinicians bring the promise of genomic medicine to their patients. The combination of NYGC's genomic and clinical expertise coupled with the power of IBM's Watson system will enable further development and refinement of the Watson tool with the shared goal of helping medical professionals develop personalized cancer care.

The new cloud-based Watson system will be designed to analyze genetic data along with comprehensive biomedical literature and drug databases. Watson can continually 'learn' as it encounters new patient scenarios, and as more information becomes available through new medical research, journal articles and clinical studies. Given the depth and speed of Watson's ability to review massive databases, the goal of the collaboration is to increase the number of patients who have access to care options tailored to their disease's DNA.

"Since the human genome was first mapped more than a decade ago, we've made tremendous progress in understanding the genetic drivers of disease. The real challenge before us is how to make sense of massive quantities of genetic data and translate that information into better treatments for patients," said Robert Darnell, M.D., Ph.D., CEO, President and Scientific Director of the New York Genome Center. "Applying the cognitive computing power of Watson is going to revolutionize genomics and accelerate the opportunity to improve outcomes for patients with deadly diseases by providing personalized treatment."

First Watson Application in Genomic Research Watson will complement rapid genome sequencing and is expected to dramatically reduce the time it takes to correlate an individual's genetic mutations with reams of medical literature, study findings, and therapeutic indications that may be relevant. The intention is to provide comprehensive information to enable clinicians to consider a variety of treatment options that the clinician can tailor to their patient's genetic mutations. It will also help NYGC scientists understand the data detailing gene sequence variations between normal and cancerous biopsies of brain tumors.

"As genomic research progresses and information becomes more available, we aim to make the process of analysis much more practical and accessible through cloud-based, cognitive innovations like Watson," said Dr. John E. Kelly III, Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research. "With this knowledge, doctors will be able to attack cancer and other devastating diseases with treatments that are tailored to the patient's and disease's own DNA profiles. If successful, this will be a major transformation that will help improve the lives of millions of patients around the world."

The goal is to have the Watson genomics prototype assist clinicians in providing personalized genomic analytics information as part of a NYGC clinical research study. The solution has been under development for the past decade in IBM's Computational Biology Center at IBM Research.

New York State's Investment in Genomic Medicine New York State is at the forefront of advancing medical science and commercialization. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently proposed $105 million to fund a partnership between NYGC and the University at Buffalo's Center for Computational Research to advance genomics research. This investment to enhance the state's genomic medicine capabilities, together with NYGC's acquisition of Illumina's state-of-the-art HiSeq X Ten whole human genome sequencing system, will accelerate the availability of valuable genomic information in New York.

Synthetic human growth hormones may not help healthy aging

Posted: at 10:50 pm

Does human growth hormone have antiaging powers? Or does it contribute to heightened cancer risk and earlier death? The complex science in the area suggests the answer is yes to both.

Growth hormone, a biochemical that helps stimulate cell growth and division, is given to children and teens with low natural supplies to increase their growth. Increasingly, healthy older individuals also are taking it to improve the appearance of skin, increase muscle tone and for other purported benefits.

Taking growth hormone for antiaging purposes is hugely controversial in the medical community but nonetheless appears to be gaining popularity in parts of the world. The global market for human growth hormone, or HGH, will reach an estimated $4.7 billion by 2018, up from $3.5 billion in 2011, according to Global Industry Analysts Inc., a market research firm.

New studies published this year, however, offer the strongest indication yet that lower levels of a compound related to growth hormone called insulin-like growth factor-1, or IGF-1, are related to longevity and lower risk of cancer as people reach old age.

"These studies suggest that growth hormone for healthy aging might not be a good idea," says Nir Barzilai, an endocrinologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City who published one of the papers in the journal Aging Cell in February.

That levels of testosterone, estrogen, growth hormone and other biological chemicals fall with age is well known among medical professionals. But whether replacing or supplementing hormones is good for the health of an aging individual is a complex question.

Eczema Symptoms, Treatment, Causes, Home Remedies …

Posted: at 10:50 pm

Eczema facts Eczema is not a single disease but a reaction pattern of the skin produced by a number conditions. Atopic dermatitis, a common causes of eczema, is more prevalent in those with asthma and hay fever. Eczema appears as small blisters that can weep and ooze, or as crusted, thickened plaques of skin. It is almost always quite itchy. It is important to distinguish the different kinds of eczema because effective treatments often differ. If eczema is produced by skin exposure to a specific substance, it can be helpful to avoid it. Keeping the skin healthy and moisturized can prevent many kinds of eczema. What is eczema?

Rather than a specific condition, eczema is a group of unrelated diseases that have a similar appearance. When it is new eczema, the affected skin appears red and elevated with small blisters (vesicles) containing a clear fluid. When the blisters break, the affected skin will weep and ooze. In older eczema, chronic eczema, the blisters are less prominent and the skin is thickened, elevated, and scaling. Eczema almost always is very itchy.

There are at least 11 different types of skin conditions that produce eczema. In order to develop a rational treatment plan, it is important to distinguish them. This is often not easy.

Boy with nut allergy died after eating curry from Indian takeaway

Posted: at 10:50 pm

Connor Donaldson suffered asthma, hayfever and eczema and his mother requested a dish with no nuts but curry house used same spoon for different dishes

A boy died after a severe reaction to a takeaway curry, his family claim.

Connor Donaldson, 12, went into cardiac arrest and died a short time later in hospital. His mother, Sarah, told an inquest that her son suffered asthma, hayfever and eczema, and that she was careful to ensure he never came into contact with nuts.

When she ordered the takeaway by phone from their home in Tyldesley, Gtr Manchester, last October 19, Mrs Donaldson was told Connors meal would not contain nuts.

But, she said, after two mouthfuls, he tapped me on the leg and said, I cant breathe. I rang 999. Tests confirmed that Connor had a severe peanut allergy.

Tyldesley Tandoori owner Minhaz Ahmed said pans and spoons were always clean. But environmental health staff found the same spoons were used for different sauces.

Bolton coroner Mrs Jennifer Leeming recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Scratching the Surface of Treating Eczema

Posted: at 10:50 pm

Parents have been itching to ask me whether their childs itchy skin could be eczema, so let me do more than skin the surface of this topic.

Eczema is a term that describes a skin condition in which the skin gets red and irritated and forms tiny red bumps that can ooze fluid or crust over. There is no definitive way to know if a child has eczema, other than to recognize the rash, along with a medical and family history suggestive of the disorder and what might have caused it.

Eczema can be a result of an allergic exposure to something that triggers the inflammatory reaction in the skin. Pollen and mold, dry winter air, harsh soaps and detergents, exposure to wool fabrics, tobacco smoke exposure, stress or even sweating can cause eczema.

Eczema occurs in about 10 percent of children, often starting in infancy and almost always appearing before a child turns five years of age. It is not contagious but about half of children with eczema will go on to develop other allergic diseases such as hay fever and possibly asthma. The other half of children with eczema will see it resolve by the time they reach adolescence.

So where is the rash most common? In infants and toddlers its common to see it start on the cheeks, forehead and scalp and then spread to the arms and legs and eventually the trunk. It is often found in the bends of the elbows, behind the knees or on the backs of the wrists and ankles.

Scratching makes eczema worse, so the name of the game is to use steroid creams or ointments, applied to the affected areas daily, to reduce inflammation and the itchy feeling that leads to scratching. There are some nonsteroidal prescription ointments that can also reduce inflammation.

Antihistamines can be used orally to reduce the itching as well. Occasionally if the rash starts to ooze pus or is very red, an antibiotic may be needed to treat bacterial germs that have entered the inflamed area.

The key to dealing with eczema flare-ups is to prevent them from happening. The best way to do that is to avoid frequent long hot baths, which can dry the skin. Instead have your child take a brief shower or bath with warm but not hot water. Use a mild soap and then pat your child dry and follow with a moisturizing ointment that can be applied to lock moisture into the skin. Keeping your child hydrated will also keep the skin moist and less prone to dryness and irritation. If an allergic trigger is identified, minimizing exposure to that trigger will also help.

Hopefully tips like this will provide you with the rash-ional information you need when it comes to knowing more about eczema and how to deal with it.

Ron Paul endorses Birman for Congress

Former U.S. congressman and presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul endorsed Republican congressional candidate Igor Birman in his race against U.S. Rep. Dr. Ami Bera (D-Elk Grove).

Paul, a Republican from Texas, said he endorsed Birman because of the candidates understanding of civil liberties and emphasis on liberty, which is what our government is supposed to be about.

He said he was also impressed with Birmans personal story. Birman was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States as a teenager along with his parents and younger brother.

Igor Birman has seen first-hand what happens when the government takes control of every aspect of your life, he said. That experience will make him a valuable member of theHouse of Representatives and a leader for smaller government and more personal liberties.

Paul added, He understands the Constitution as well as, if not better than, people who have lived here their entire lives.

Birman, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Elk Grove), said he appreciated receiving the endorsement.

I am absolutely thrilled that the leader of the liberty movement has endorsed our campaign, he said. Dr. Paul has inspired millions to fight to restore our federal government to its proper constitutional role.

Paul said he doesnt expect to endorse more than 10 candidates in the 2014 elections.

The Bristol Post commented Pet cruelty: Let's make punishments harsher

Posted: at 10:48 pm

Comments(4)

READING the Post's coverage of Katy Gammons cruelty towards her "pet dog" this will rightly horrify most decent human beings.

The implications for her will no doubt be long lasting and hopefully a lesson for those who think they can treat animals in such an appalling way.

For me, however, it's not just this awful disregard for the "fatal" abuse inflicted upon this dog, it also raised the question of why people undertake the responsibility of pet ownership when they clearly are not going to be there to care for the animal through out the day (holidays included).

Perhaps there should be some legal charter for ownership that potential owners have to sign up to, in an attempt to try to ensure that owners are more accountable for the "pets" that they have ownership of.

It really frustrates me when I read about pets being abused or indeed put down due to their owner's irresponsibility or neglect.

Perhaps the punishments should be reviewed and radically increased in an attempt to eradicate the abuse of animals.

As we are also aware, in terms of more dangerous dogs, it is generally the owner that has encouraged the dog's behaviour.

The implications as we know have been devastating for others, especially children, who have been maimed and killed by such animals.
