Eczema doesnt go away in most children, study finds

Posted: April 5, 2014 at 5:43 am

My 14-year-old son has been dealing with the itchy, scaly red skin patches of eczema since he was a baby; I always know when summer is officially over the minute he starts scratching his arms and legs, since cold, dry air causes a flare-up for him.

Over-the-counter corticosteroid creams usually help him manage the itchiness, and the condition which doesnt cause severe problems in most of the 10 to 15 percent of children who have it has receded through the years. Still, I wonder if hell ever outgrow it.

A new study published this week in JAMA Dermatology suggests he may not: Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania followed more than 7100 children with eczema for several years and found that the skin condition lingered through the teens. Only 50 percent of those who reached age 20 had at least one six-month period where they were free of symptoms.

This runs counter to what most dermatologists are taught during training: that 50 to 70 percent of children with eczema referred to medically as atopic dermatitis will be free of their symptoms by age 12, the authors wrote.

Physicians who treat children with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis, they added, should tell children and their caregivers that AD is a lifelong illness with periods of waxing and waning skin problems.

Botox for skin conditions

Posted: at 5:42 am

HOUSTON -

It's a chronic skin condition that can have a major impact on your self-esteem and quality of life. But now there's a new way to battle psoriasis, with a proven cosmetic treatment.

Lisa Encinca had her first outbreak of psoriasis more than 30 years ago.

"Initially I didnt know what it was but as it began to increase I went to see a doctor, Encinca said.

Dermatologist Dr. Leyda Bowes said psoriasis is a skin condition that can be tough to treat.

"There's no cure for psoriasis and patients have to be applying creams and other therapies even injections of specific agents forever. Also sometimes the skin becomes lighter in color and there's no way of going back it's pretty much permanent," Bowes said.

Topical treatments helped Encinca for a while but she became concerned about the long term effect of cortisone creams and steroids. Long term use can weaken the body and lead to thinning of the skin.

That's why Bowes and other dermatologists are experimenting with an off label use of Botox. They're hoping the mechanisms of the wrinkle relaxer will reduce inflammatory cells that fuel chronic conditions like psoriasis.

"So if we can modulate these responses bring it down, psoriasis could improve," said Bowes.

A week after the injections, Encinca noticed a clear difference.

Recurrent head and neck tumors have gene mutations that could be vulnerable to cancer drug

SAN DIEGO, April 4, 2014 An examination of the genetic landscape of head and neck cancers indicates that while metastatic and primary tumor cells share similar mutations, recurrent disease is associated with gene alterations that could be exquisitely sensitive to an existing cancer drug. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and Yale University School of Medicine will share their findings during a mini-symposium Sunday at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2014.

About 50 percent of patients diagnosed with head and neck squamous cell cancers already have disease that has spread, or metastasized, to the lymph nodes, explained Jennifer Grandis, M.D., distinguished professor and vice chair of research, Department of Otolaryngology, Pitt School of Medicine, and director of the Head and Neck Program at UPCI, partner with UPMC CancerCenter. About 20 to 30 percent of patients thought to be cured of the disease go on to develop recurrent cancer, which typically doesn't respond to standard treatments.

"We decided to compare the genetic signatures of tumor cells from primary tumors with those from disease that had spread and cancers that were thought cured but then came back in the hopes of getting some clues about how best to guide therapy in these different settings," Dr. Grandis said. "We found that recurrent cancers might have an Achilles' heel we can exploit to kill them."

The team conducted the first whole-exome genetic sequencing study on what Dr. Grandis called its "treasure trove" of frozen patient samples and found similar mutations both in primary tumors and in the lymph nodes to which their cancers had already spread. But there were different mutations in tumors that had recurred after a period of remission that were not found in their original cancers.

"The recurrent tumors carried mutations in a gene area that encodes for DDR2 cell receptors," Dr. Grandis said. "Other studies have shown that DDR2 mutations can confer sensitivity to the cancer drug dasatinib, which could mean that drug has promise in the treatment of recurrent head and neck cancers."

The researchers suggest that further investigation of dasatinib treatment is warranted.

The Red River Shootout became politically incorrect. Calling it the Red River Rivalry was apparently too obvious.

So this years Texas-Oklahoma game in October has been dubbed the AT&T Red River Showdown, according to both schools and the telecom giant. A new logo highlighting both teams was created and will be on full display Oct. 11.

This is the ninth year that AT&T has been a title sponsor of the Longhorns-Sooners matchup, which is known simply as Texas-OU or OU-Texas depending on which side of the Red River you live. It shifted from the Red River Shootout to the Red River Rivalry in 2005.

Were excited to continue connecting college football fans to this iconic game for years to come, said Mark Wright, AT&T vice president of media services and sponsorships.

Right, Turkey elections are over. You can use Twitter again

Posted: at 5:42 am

High performance access to file storage

The Turkish government has finally lifted its ban on Twitter after a largely unsuccessful attempt at state-sponsored censorship in the run-up to key local elections held last Sunday.

Prime minister Tayyip Erdogans administration blocked the popular microblogging platform a fortnight ago after complaining of a smear campaign when alleged recordings of senior officials making shady deals appeared on the site.

The telecoms authority (TIB) confirmed to Reuters on Thursday that the ban had been lifted, a whole week after an Ankara court ruled in favour of a group of journos and lawyers who complained that the block contravened their "freedom of information and communication.

The ban followed some fighting talk from the PM, who branded Twitter a scourge and said of social media we will wipe out all of these.

He followed the Twitter blockade last week with a ban on YouTube on which site agitators had also posted audio files incriminating his administration.

In the end the Twitter ban didnt appear to have much effect. Just a day after it came into force some social media agencies were measuring a spike in tweets of up to 130 per cent from Turkish users.

Many used TOR or VPNs to get around the ban, whilst Twitter also tweeted several numbers its followers could use to SMS their posts.

A lifting of the ban always seemed likely in light of this, and after president Abdullah Gul declared, on Twitter, that it was unacceptable.

For the record, Erdogans Justice and Development (AK) party took over 45 per cent of the vote at the elections. All El Reg can deduce from this is that either censorship works or there are a lot of Twitter haters in Turkey.
