Many Common Household Products Contain DNA-Damaging Nanoparticles: Study

redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online
Some nanoparticles commonly added to thousands of consumer products can significantly damage DNA, according to a new study by researchers at MIT and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH).
These products, which include cosmetics, sunscreens, clothing and other common items, contain nanoparticles added by manufacturers to, among other things, improve texture, kill microbes, or enhance shelf life.
But the current study suggests these tiny particles can be toxic to cells.
For instance, the researchers found that zinc oxide nanoparticles, often used in sunscreen to block ultraviolet rays, significantly damages DNA. Nanoscale silver, which has been added to toys, toothpaste, clothing, and other products for its antimicrobial properties, also produces extensive DNA damage.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require manufacturers to test nanoscale additives for a given material if the bulk material has already been shown to be safe. However, there is evidence that the nanoparticle form of some of these materials may not be safe due to their extremely small size and differences in physical, chemical, and biological properties. They can also penetrate cells more easily.
The problem is that if a nanoparticle is made out of something thats deemed a safe material, its typically considered safe. There are people out there who are concerned, but its a tough battle because once these things go into production, its very hard to undo, said Bevin Engelward, professor of biological engineering at MIT and lead researcher of the current study.
Engleward and associate professor Philip Demokritou, director of HSPHs Center for Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology, used a high-speed screening technology to analyze the DNA damage caused by nanoparticles, allowing them to study the potential hazards at a much faster rate and larger scale than previously possible.
The researchers focused on five types of engineered nanoparticles silver, zinc oxide, iron oxide, cerium oxide, and silicon dioxide (also known as amorphous silica) that are used industrially. Some of these nanomaterials can produce free radicals called reactive oxygen species, which can alter DNA. Furthermore, once these particles get into the body, they may accumulate in tissues, causing even more damage.

DNA evidence recovered from a bandanna that a purported gang member was wearing and dropped after he shot and killed a 64-year-old man four years ago helped lead to his arrest on murder charges this week, Cook County prosecutors said Friday.
Anthony Wells, who is already in jail awaiting trial in connection with another murder, had been covering his mouth and nose with a black and white bandanna when he opened fire in the 2000 block of East 71st Street and hit Osho Mobolaji on Aug. 13, 2010, Assistant States Attorney Dan Griffin said.
As he fled, Wells bandanna fell to the ground and was recovered by police, who sent it to the Illinois State Police forensic lab, Griffin said.
Wells was also identified by a witness in a lineup earlier this week, Griffin said.
Wells, of the 7100 block of Jeffrey Boulevard, was ordered held in lieu of $2 million bail Friday.
Wells is currently in jail for his alleged role in a September 2013 murder that took place in the same area where Mobolaji was gunned down.

Edico Genome seeks to speed up DNA mapping
Posted: at 12:43 am
Edico Genome has developed a circuit board card that plugs into computers to speed processing of genomic data.
A San Diego startup has come up with technology that it claims streamlines the mapping of next-generation DNA sequencing data into useful information.
Edico Genome has developed the Dragen Wavefront Processor system that can take data that might require 20 hours to process today and do it in less than 30 minutes, said Pieter van Rooyen, chief executive officer of the firm.
It makes things obviously a lot faster, but our biggest value proposition, I would say, is actually the cost, he said. It provides all the bio-IT processing at a much lower cost.
While the core cost of sequencing a human genome now has fallen below $1,000 thanks to new high-tech machines from San Diego-based Illumina and similar devices from Thermo Fishers Life Technologies unit in Carlsbad processing the enormous amounts of digital data created during DNA sequencing remains a time-consuming, computer-intensive bottleneck that is slowing down efforts to bring the full benefit of genomic medicine to the public.
According to van Rooyen, the company is talking with Illumina and Thermo Fisher about its technology. Illumina declined to comment. Mike Lelivelt, director of software products for Thermo Fishers Ion Torrent line of sequencers, said data sets are so large in next-generation sequencing that research labs have banks of computers sitting near sequencing machines to process the genetic information and hunt for variants.
What (Edico is) trying to do is speed up what could be a very time-intensive process by using a highly modified collection of graphic processors that are specifically built to do massively parallel mapping of these individual (sequencing) reads, he said.
The question is whether Edicos faster processing technology is worth the potential cost.
Van Rooyen claims Dragen Wavefront cuts costs by reducing computer hardware and other back-office infrastructure expenses. But Lelivelt isnt so sure of the savings. Edico sells an aftermarket circuit board card that plugs into computers. Installation, along with the costs of the processor itself, could make it too expensive for the benefit.
Do the people buying this value speed to the point where they are willing to pay the premium that might be coming in with this? asked Lelivelt.
