PH genome center unveils facility powered by IBM supercomputer

The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) officially opened on Monday, April 14, its Core Facility for Bioinformatics (CFB) to provide local scientists and researchers a suite of services for genome-scale data generation and analysis.

At the heart of the facility is an IBM supercomputer dubbed Blue Gene, which the US-based tech giant provided to the Philippine government.

The bioinformatics unit complements the next generation sequencing services being offered by the centers DNA Sequencing Core Facility (DSCF).

It offers high-performance computing resources, hardware and software, needed to analyze, manage/curate, and archive massive amount of data derived from next-generation sequencing.

Apart from data storage and analytics, researchers working with genomics-based technologies may also avail of the CFBs custom-made/client-focused services such as provision of software, specialized databases or technical support for varied bioinformatics analyses, and also the use and access to high-performance computing resources.

The Core Facility for Bioinformatics, a part of the research project capability building in R&D genomics is now open to local researchers through the grant from the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), said Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, executive director of the PGC.

In 2012, IBM teamed up with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to establish the first Philippine Systems and Technology R&D Lab.

As part of the initiative, the DOST also received an IBM Blue Gene/P super computer for use in research and development projects aligned with the national agenda, which includes improving weather forecasts, disaster management, precision agriculture, and health.

Although primarily seen as a catalyst in the advancement of bioinformatics and computational genomics research in the country, the CFB is also designed to contribute in addressing the lack of local experts in bioinformatics/computational biology.

Computerized counseling reduces HIV-1 viral load, sexual transmission risk

Antiretroviral therapy (ART), the primary type of treatment for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), can reduce sexual transmission, prevent illness, and increase longevity and quality of life for patients. However, according to current data, only an estimated 77-percent of U.S patients on ART therapy have suppressed viral loads. This suggests patients' adherence to the current ART treatment regiments is in need of improvement to reduce the viral load and also to lower sexual transmission risk behaviors.

Now, new research from faculty affiliated with New York University's Center for Drug Use and HIV Research (CDUHR) at the NYU College of Nursing (NYUCN), published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, shows that computerized counseling is a promising intervention for increased ART adherence and safer sex, especially for individuals with problems in these areas. This is the first intervention to report improved ART adherence, viral suppression, and reduced secondary sexual transmission risk behavior.

"The computer-delivered intervention model, Computer Assessment & Rx Education (CARE+), is a .Net-based custom software application with intervention content based on theoretical frameworks, which acts as additional support for traditional ART treatment," said Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, FAAN, Professor; Executive Director, NYUCN Global; and Associate Dean for Research, NYU Global Institute of Public Health. "The tool incorporates evidence-based elements shown to improve ART adherence or reduce sexual risk, as well as a personalized printout summarizing feedback, health plan and referral phone numbers."

The objective of the study, "Computerized Counseling Reduces HIV-1 Viral Load and Sexual Transmission Risk: Findings from a Randomized Controlled Trial," was to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a computerized intervention made specifically to support patients towards positive behavioral change. The study included 240 participants who were randomly divided into two groups: one receiving CARE+ and the other group receiving only a computerized questionnaire.

By focusing on the confidence, motivations and knowledge of the participants, the study reflects a better understanding of how behaviors affect ART adherence and HIV transmission risk. The results were positive and point to a new platform for further studies in HIV self-care and prevention.

"Nearly all CARE+ intervention participants found the tool easy to use, felt the session helped as much or more than face-to-face counseling with a staff person and three out of four even preferred the computer over a human counselor in the future."

After the nine-month period, CARE+ intervention participants overall had an average decrease in HIV viral load, had better ART adherence, and decreased the odds of transmission risks. A majority of participants also stated that their confidence in their health behavior plan success increased by 20-percent by the end of the trial.

Boutique owners Divine Serum helping heal dry skin

Posted: at 4:45 pm

A few years ago, Tomball business owner Grayce Egami couldnt find a solution for her young daughters severe eczema so she came up with one herself.

Egami recently opened a new holistic boutique in Tomball, where she sells Divines Serum. She developed the formula herself.

My daughter had a very severe case of eczema, Egami said. We had used everything from steroids to topical treatments and nothing was working. We dealt with that for about two years.

Egami said she went online and did some research about a holistic approach to treating the eczema.

I just wanted to see how I could help, she said. The Divine Serum came out of a need we had. My business just started with word of mouth and has now grown to the boutique.

Egamis Divine Serum helps to treat dry skin and cracked feet by moisturizing up to four hours. She has also formulated a skin cleanser.

Once you have dry skin it causes itching, she said. The itching can cause an infection. The cleanser and serum help to get your skin healthy again.

Egami offers her clients the chance to experience her products at the store.

The skin care line is the biggest thing we have here, she said. It helps those who suffer. A lot of my customers are going through chemo or are diabetic and their skin is dried out. We are just getting the word out.

Egami opened the boutique, located at 105 Pine Street in Tomball, in November, but has been working with lotions and serums for five years. The boutique also sells healing hematite jewelry and is a distributor of Shaklee.
