Censorship of film Halawet Rooh in Egypt sparks national controversy

Posted: April 24, 2014 at 5:42 pm

Controversy is mounting over film censorship in Egypt where the military-backed government has pulled steamy pic Halawet Rooh, Arabic for Sweetness of Spirit, from movie theatres, overruling the head of the countrys censorship board who resigned in protest sparking outrage.

Ironically the spat comes just after Darren Aronofskys Noah got the green light to be released in Egypt even though its banned in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrein. That had caused Egyptian freedom of expression advocates to cheer.

The decision by interim prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab to unilaterally yank Sweetness, which stars Lebanese bombshell Haifa Wehbe, prompted Ahmed Awad, undersecretary to the culture minister and head of the censorship authority, to immediately resign. The censorship board is supposed to be an independent body with final say on whether a movie can be seen by Egyptian auds.

Directed by Sameh Abdel Aziz, Sweetness is reportedly loosely based on Italo helmer Giuseppe Tornatores steamy Monica Bellucci-starrer Malena, both pics involving a teen-age boys infatuation, which is what motivated the muzzle, along with a rape scene.

Prime Minister Mahlab announced on the cabinets Facebook page that he yanked the film in response to calls from the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood and to preserve the morals of our children.

The movie, released earlier this month, had grossed almost 1 million Egyptian pounds ($143,000) in its first week, according to website Elcinema.com. Thats 52 percent more than the take in the same frame for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The pics trailer, featuring Wehbe, a singer-turned-actress whos become a sex symbol in the Arab world, drew more than 3 million views on YouTube.

The Egyptian Creativity Front, a coalition comprising the countrys three main artistic unions has slammed the move as an assault on the freedoms of thought, expression and art.

Awad, the censorship board chief who resigned, told the Associated Press he did this out of respect for myself.

Since being appointed in September 2013 Awad had been hailed as one of the countrys most liberal movie censors. He gave the go-ahead for several potentially button-pushing pics to screen, including Amr Salamas black comedy Excuse My French (pictured) about a Christian kid enrolled in an Islamic public school who finds himself forced to conceal his religious identity. French, which had long languished in censorship, topped the Egyptian box office chart in February.

Is Paul plausible in 2016?

Posted: at 5:42 pm

Can Sen. Rand Paul really become the 45th president?

His curly hair and slight frame arent a Hollywood casting agents idea of a commander in chief. But the freshman Republican senator from Kentucky rejects established norms; hes on a declared mission to redefine the presidency and his own party.

Many other Republicans are nervous about Pauls rising stock, much more than they were about the presidential bids of his father, former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

A CNN/ORC International poll last month showed Paul leading a field of Republican presidential contenders among Republicans and independents who favor the GOP nationwide. He garnered 16 percent support among those groups, compared to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who garnered 15 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Paul won the presidential survey at the Northeast Republican Leadership Conference in New Hampshire and the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Even so, there are some in GOP circles who say they dont take Paul seriously.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter said Paul, whos about 5 feet 8 inches tall, cant be president because hes as tall as my iPod.

Generally, the taller candidate wins, said Robert Denton Jr., an expert in political communication at Virginia Tech.

But Denton added that voters criteria have evolved over the years and now a candidates ability to project empathy is as important as radiating authority and competence.

He actually does have kind of an everyday-person appearance about him, he said.

Why this gender-crossing economist prefers motherly libertarianism to government paternalism

Posted: at 5:42 pm

Economist Deirdre McCloskey, a motherly libertarian, wants to be taxed to provide a minimum income (not a minimum wage), which would treat adults like adults. Photo by JACQUES DEMARTHON/AFP/Getty Images.

A Note from Paul Solman: Deirdre McCloskey is a freshwater economist with a twist. A career that began on the banks of Lake Michigan at that bastion of free market economics, the University of Chicago as opposed to those saltwater havens of bi-coastal Keynesianism, Harvard, MIT and Berkeley continued at the University of Iowa, where McCloskey became one of the countrys foremost economic historians and a prolific and esteemed writer on the rhetoric of economics. The byline for all this work was not Deirdre McCloskey, however, but Donald.

In 1995, at age 53, with a wife and two grown children, all of whom he loved, Don changed his gender identification and name. She says now that leaving Chicago for Iowa may have been impulsive, but she has never doubted the wisdom of acting on a lifelong drive. Some family and friends were freaked out. But as Deirdre (Dee) tells it in her 1999 memoir, Crossing, the response of the first administrator she came out to, the dean of Iowas business school, Gary Fethke, was not untypical of the reaction within economics.

One day, as McCloskey had begun the process of what she calls gender-crossing, Fethke noticed McCloskeys ear studs, small, but both ears. McCloskey and Fethke had known each other since 1980 and were on man-to-man terms. Fethke thought he knew that McCloskey was straight, even macho. I met McCloskey earlier that same year and thought the same.

Fethke smiled and said jocularly, Whats this, Don? The earrings! Have you turned gay?

You want to know, Gary?

Uhyes. Come into my office. He shut the door.

Dee spoke with his ironic, tough-guy demeanor, the last defenses of masculinity. He admitted to being terrified at how the university community might react.

Gary sat stunned for a moment. They were both economists, conservative by academic standards, free-market enthusiasts. Then:

Thank god.I thought for a moment you were going to confess to converting to socialism!

Azerbaijan human rights situation urgent

Posted: at 5:41 pm

The state of human rights in Azerbaijan requires urgent attention, the commissioner of a European watchdog organization said Wednesday.

Nils Muinieks, Commissioner for Human Rights at the 47-nation Council of Europe, said in a press release Wednesday that no progress had been made to curtail human rights abuses since the COE reported on them in August.

In particular, Muinieks highlighted government crackdowns on freedom of expression, citing [u]njustified and selective criminal prosecution of people expressing dissenting views, including journalists, bloggers and activists.

This is unacceptable, the Commissioner said.

The release likewise charged the governing New Azerbaijan Party, headed by President Ilham Aliyev, with restricting freedom of association and assembly, and violating property rights, accusations the Azeri government denies.

There are no problems with human rights in Azerbaijan, said New Azerbaijan Party deputy executive secretary Mubariz Gurbanly. Those who talk about human rights violations in our country are biased and try to blacken Azerbaijans image.

Human Barbie's no make-up selfie

Posted: at 5:41 pm

Ukranian model Valeria Lukyanova, aka Human Barbie, uploads a no make-up selfie, and the video diary of the spa treatments that prepped her for it

Barbie, human or otherwise, is rarely seen without her make-up. Valeria Lukyanova, aka Human Barbie, uploading a photo of herself sans coloured lenses, bubble-gum blush, doll lashes and saccharine sweet lip colour was something we didn't expect to see, until now.

IN PICTURES - Celebrity 'no make-up selfies'

For her latest selfie - of which there are many - the 28-year-old Ukranian model (who lives off a diet of cosmic micro-food for the record) has stripped back her plastic fantastic appeal and joined the no make-up selfie movement.

Her fans, while enthused by the photo - "so much more beautiful WITHOUT MAKE UP!" they echoed on Lukyanova's Facebook page - might however want to look at the post that followed. A video diary live from the spa - where it seems Human Barbie has spent a lot of time, and money, perfecting and manipulating her 'natural' look.

It's not just her vital stats and eye colour that Lukyanova has altered, it's also her eyebrows and colour, her skin (which she likes to look toned and 'Nordic') and we might add, her lifestyle, as exhibited by this short, but exhausting, film shot on spa location.

Job fair provides local teens with job search, interview skills

Posted: at 5:41 pm

Teenagers who live on post and in the local community spoke with Human Resources managers and assistants at Fort Belvoir during the Army Community Service Employment Readiness Programs Teen Job Fair, April 16 at the ACS building.

Human Resource representatives from the Fort Belvoir Credit Union, Post Exchange and the Nonappropriated Funds office spoke to the teens during a panel discussion about the importance of dressing properly for an interview, having questions prepared for the interviewer and appropriate comments to make during and after an interview.

The panelists also wanted the teens to feel comfortable when applying for jobs, too, according to Juanita Ray, Fort Belvoir Nonappropriated Funds Human Resources specialist.

I wanted to make sure they are aware they have to get used to applying for jobs online, said Ray. A lot of jobs are announced on USAJOBS, but the system is cumbersome, so I think some teens are afraid of using the website.

Teens left the fair more confident and informed about preparing and going through an interview, plus applying for jobs, according to Signe McDonald, 16, who attends Hayfield High School.

The way you present yourself during an interview, said McDonald, The fact all that stuff is taken into consideration is definitely the most useful information we heard today.

Her interest in working at the Fort Belvoir Exchange this summer is why she attended the fair, said McDonald. Along with interview skills, McDonald feels like the advice each panel member gave for how to apply for a job is useful.

You have to read the entire job description so you arent surprised by something when you start the job, said McDonald, Whether its pay, benefits or something else.

One teen who attended the fair found the interview skills particularly helpful. Haleigh Altersitz, 14, Lewis Village resident, likes to sew and make dresses. Shes thinking of starting a business one day, so knowing how to conduct an interview will help her if she has to hire someone.

I know what to look for in an interview if I ever interview someone, said Altersitz.
