The next presidential election is two years away, but Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Pauls visit to Maine on Saturday is being considered perhaps his most important so far in his potential 2016 White House bid.

The Maine Republican Party has been plagued by infighting since libertarian activists loyal to Paul's father -- former GOP presidential candidate and Texas Rep. Ron Paul -- seized control of it in 2012.

The activists took over the state convention and elected a majority slate of delegates for Paul.

However, establishment Republicans challenged the move, and the national committee voted to replace half of Maine's delegates for Paul with supporters of Mitt Romney, the party's presidential nominee.

In Maine, Paul is trying to strengthen his appeal beyond his father's passionate supporters to prove he can be a credible national candidate.

And he hopes to promote further party unity ahead of the November re-election test for GOP Gov. Paul LePage, considered one of most endangered Republican governors in the nation. LePage rode Tea Party support to victory in 2010.

On Saturday, Paul told the Maine GOP convention that Republicans must reach out to groups that the country has mistreated and show the party's compassionate side.

He also said that the GOP cannot be the party of corporate welfare and railed against overspending and government waste.

On Friday, Paul said at Harvard University's Institute of Politics that the Republican Party will adapt, evolve or die."

When Sen. Rand Paul visits Maine Saturday, he'll be venturing into friendly territory.

His father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, amassed strong support in the state and took a close second behind Mitt Romney in the 2012 GOP presidential caucuses, 38 percent-36 percent.

Rand Paul will speak at Maine's GOP convention on Saturday, after headlining a lunch for the state party with fellow Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

The pairing of the two senators is an interesting matchup, given Collins' reputation for being a moderate and Paul's libertarian leanings. But it could be a mutually beneficial appearance.

Paul is actively trying to broaden his appeal in the GOP by courting mainstream Republicans without losing his libertarian-leaning base.

If Paul runs for president, he'll want the same robust support his father got from Republicans in Maine, and by appearing with Collins, he'll show voters nationwide he can play nice with establishment Republicans and those willing to work with the other side.

For her part, an event with Paul could help boost her credentials among her more conservative base and curb speculation that she's not a firmly rooted Republican.

"It's kind of neat to have two people that represent part of the breath of the Republican Party ... together in one room," Maine GOP Chairman Rick Bennett said.

Bennett is hoping the joint appearance will help represent a theme of unity at the convention, a theme he says needs to permeate after the state's 2010 and 2012 conventions that saw strong division among tea party activists, libertarians and moderate Republicans.

Potential 2016 presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul is in the Northeast, meeting with Republican operatives and fund-raisers. Conservatives are wary of some of his recent comments.

Perhaps its genetic, but US Sen. Rand Paul seems to have the same effect on more traditional Republicans as his father former US Rep. Ron Paul did.

Rep. Peter King (R) of New York says Sen. Paul whos been making clear moves toward a presidential run in 2016 would be disastrous as president.

Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona included the younger Paul among Republican wacko birds filibustering the appointment of John Brennan to head the CIA. (McCain later apologized for the comment, which also had been aimed at Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Justin Amash.)

Rand Paul consistently tops the list of possible GOP presidential candidates in 2016, including a Quinnipiac University poll in Colorado this week in which he beat Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton 48-43 percent.

The poll in Colorado might also shed some light on where Paul could outflank his GOP counterparts among young voters, according to Politico.com.

While Clinton leads Jeb Bush by 21 points and Mike Huckabee by 11 points among 18-to 29-year-olds, Paul matched the former secretary of state in the age group, with both scoring 43 percent, Politico reports. Paul also had a strong edge against Clinton among respondents who identify as independent voters: 48 percent of independent voters favored Paul, while just 37 favored Clinton.

But if he is to go farther than his father (whose runs for president were significant even though they failed), Paul will have to do more than attract a loyal, energetic following of young libertarians, plus those tea partyers who dont mind his straying from conservative orthodoxy on some international and social issues.
