NASA Plant Pillows Give Astronauts On The International Space Station A Chance To Grow Their Own Veggies

Posted: May 5, 2014 at 4:45 pm

NASA is experimenting with growing fresh vegetables aboard the International Space Station, or ISS, using what the space agency calls plant pillows -- NASAs version of an ordinary grow bag commonly preferred by tomato farmers. The goal is to establish a garden aboard the station that would give astronauts a chance to pick their own meals.

NASA announced the fresh food program last month shortly before SpaceX made a delivery to the ISS of 2.5 tons of cargo early Easter morning.

The April payload included a portable pop-up greenhouse for growing things like lettuce. The space agencys garden program is appropriately nicknamed Veggie.

With the plant pillows successfully delivered, astronomers are one step closer to enjoying the first fresh salad in space.

"The ability to grow food in space will become increasingly important in the context of future long-duration space missions, and especially in the context of future human settlements on the moon and Mars," Ian Crawford, a professor ofplanetary science and astrobiology at Birkbeck, University of London, told the Guardian. "These experiments are an important step in developing this capability."

Growing plants in space has its own unique set of challenges. In zero gravity conditions, seeds dont remain in the soil, and water pools around the roots which can choke the plants.

Plants in space also have a hard time knowing which way is up and which way is down, meaning they often wont sprout in the appropriate direction.

NASAs plant pillows include a base with a reservoir of water that is covered with a permeable fabric. A series of wicks guide the water towards the plants as the water seeps into the soil. The wicks also help to keep the plants growing upright.

The seeds themselves are glued in the correct orientation. A set of LED lights provides the plants with energy.

Two of the NASA plant pillows contain seeds of red romaine lettuce. The third holds zinnia seeds, a flowering plant.

ISS Studies Show Bacteria From Earth Could Colonize Mars

Posted: at 4:45 pm

timothy posted yesterday | from the let's-get-this-process-underway dept.

As reported by Tech Times, research conducted aboard the ISS has shown that Earth bacteria could survive the rigors of travel to Mars better than might be expected. "Research into bacterial colonization on the red planet was not part of the plan to terraform the alien world ahead of human occupation. Instead, three teams investigated how to prevent microbes from Earth from hitching a ride to the red planet aboard spacecraft. It is nearly impossible to remove all biological contaminants from equipment headed to other planets. By better understanding what organisms can survive in space or on the surfaces of other worlds, mission planners can learn which forms of microscopic life to concentrate on during the sanitation process. 'If you are able to reduce the numbers to acceptable levels, a proxy for cleanliness, the assumption is that the life forms will not survive under harsh space conditions,' Kasthuri Venkateswaran of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and co-author of all three papers, said."

Moon colonization? – Yahoo

Posted: at 4:44 pm

The moon is the perfect stepping stone for human exploration of space and for that reason going back to the moon is very important. Just supplying the ISS with food, air and water from a lunarbase would be alot cheaper than supplying the ISS from earth. This is BECAUSE the moon has so little gravity and no atmosphere. A payload taking off from the lunar surface can have any shape or size. No need to take in account drag and aerodynamics. And using a MagLev track payloads can be lofted into space using only electricity.

Everything needed to build spaceship and equippment is right there on the lunar surface as it is very similar in composition to earths crust. There are no or very little of volatiles like carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen but those same elements are considered waste on the ISS. CO2, urine and waste plastics for instance. Everywhere humans go they bring it along. A station on the moon that takes care of wastes from the ISS would be a good start for a lunar industry. CO2 is split into carbon and oxygen using the Sabatier electrolysis cycle which also produces hydrogen. Hydrogen and carbon is used to steal oxygen from the lunarsoil and metals for construction become the "waste" that can be used. So you get more CO2 and water that you can split into hydrogen, oxygen and carbon once more. Eventually you have so much oxygen you have no choice but to get rid of it. So you sell it to NASA for a profit where it is turned back into precious CO2. Same thing with the water only it just gets enriched with nitrogen compunds.

Food production isnt a given. We dont know when it is feasible or if it can even be done on the moon. But if you stock up on enough water and CO2 a biological outpost on the moon would be ideal. Then you finally get to put all those nitrogen compunds into use and begin to sell kelpburgers to NASA.

I wouldnt call this colonization however. People would just live and work on the moon much like we live and work on oilplatforms, in nuclear subs or in research stations in Antarctica. But I am still all for it. There are plenty of other worlds out there that we WILL colonize. We just need to build a bridge to them first.
