DNA match leads to charges in 1995 attack in St. Louis, police say

Posted: at 12:43 am

ST. LOUIS DNA has linked a St. Louis man to an alleged rape and robbery downtown in 1995, police say.

Prosecutors charged Terrence L. Walker, 38, of the 3500 block of Plover Avenue, with first-degree robbery on Monday. No sex charges have been filed, but police said in court documents that Walker's DNA matched evidence from a rape kit after an alleged rape in December 1995 in the 300 block of North Seventh Street.

According to a probable cause statement by police, a woman accused a man of raping her at gunpoint and taking her wallet. Police said investigators received a DNA match to Walker through a national law enforcement database of DNA in November. Lauren Trager, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Officewould not say when or how the DNA sample was obtained, citing an ongoing investigation.

Walker was charged in October with misdemeanor assault. He was released on that charge but was arrested in March on a bench warrant for missing a court hearing, court records say. On May 2, Walker posted bail on that charge and was released.

No sex charges were filed in the case because the statute of limitations has expired on various sex crimes applicable to the allegations in the case, Trager said.

Walker was not in custody Wednesday. A judge set his cash-only bail at $50,000.

Walker's criminal history includes several convictions of vehicle tampering and resisting arrest.

Let There Be Life: Researchers Created Brand New Kind of Working DNA

Posted: at 12:43 am

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) -- helical polymers of nucleic acids attached to a phosphate backbone -- is the blueprint of all life on Earth. From humans to even some lowly parasitic viruses (essentially bundles of DNA looking for a host), DNA is used daily to encode ribonucleic acid (RNA), which in turn are used to make the proteins that regulate life as we know it. I. It's Life Jim, But Not as We Know It In 1953, Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling photographed double-helical DNA, offering a final conclusive proof of life's genetic code. James Watson and Francis Crick, a pair of famous biologists, popularized the finding. Life as we know it is produce by combinations of two kinds of base-pairs:

An unnatural base pair is seen here aside a natural base pair (dC-dG). [Image Source: Nature]

These organisms cannot survive outside the laboratory. Personally, I think its a less dangerous way to modify DNA.

DNA 'Plan B' to beat murder charge

The man accused of murdering five members of the Lin family allegedly had "numerous" conversations about the crime with a fellow prison inmate who gained his trust, telling him where he bought the hammer and rope used in the attack and where they were hidden, a court has heard.

The accused murderer and his fellow inmate allegedly referred to the scheme as Plan B a bold strategy that was only to be pursued if "things go really bad".

But the NSW Supreme Court heard on Monday that one of the men was playing a very different game.

Lian Bin Robert Xie is on trial for the murder of Min "Norman" Lin, 45; Mr Lins wife, Yun "Lily" Li Lin, 44; their sons Henry, 12, and Terry, 9; and Ms Lin's sister, Yun Bin "Irene" Yin, 39, in Boundary Road, Epping, in the early hours of July 18, 2009.

The court heard on Monday that, after being arrested, the 50-year-old was caught in a carefully planned police sting designed to flush out vital information about his involvement in the crime.

Crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, QC, told the jury that a prisoninmate, known as "Witness A",would give evidence about 21 separate conversations he had with Mr Xie over the course of 18 months they spent in neighbouring cells inLongBayjail from mid-2011.

These allegedly included discussions about two plots - both known as 'Plan B' - by which Mr Xie would allegedlyframe dead people for the murdersby planting theirDNAat the crime scene or on amurder weapon.

The court heard that Witness A told the accused killer that he had a contact inside a funeral parlour called "Harry" who could find a body whoseDNAcould be put on the murder weapon, the location of which would then be leaked to police.

Human Longevity Inc. Fills Leadership Roles

Posted: at 12:43 am

Human Longevity Inc., the J. Craig Venter-backed outfit that recently raised $70 million in Series A to help extend the human lifespan through genomics and informatics, has a trio of new hires to help steer its C-suite.

It has hired Bradley Perkins as its chief medical officer, Yaron Turpaz as its chief information officer, and Felix Frueh as its chief scientific officer.

Perkins will oversee all clinical and therapeutic operations at the company, which includes developing the consumer clinics business and stem cell therapeutics.

Perkins was previously chief transformation officer at Vanguard Health Systems, overseeing the 46,000-employee health services providers strategy and innovation initiatives. Among his many roles at the system, Perkins started a $167 million venture capital fund at Vanguard.

He has worked at the Centers for Disease Control, and co-discovered a bacteria that causes cat scratch disease which led to several new bacterial meningitis and pneumonia vaccines, according to Human Longevity.

Working closely with the CDC director, he built a $2 billion state-of-the-art emergency response capability and positioned the improvement of population health as a focus of the health care reform movement within the White House at that time, Human Longevity said.

Turpaz will build the companys genomic and phenotypic databases, and will lead the bioinformatics and software engineering efforts at Human Longevity, the company said. He worked recently at AstraZeneca as the vice president of research and development information technology. Hes worked extensively with big data analytics, Human Longevity said.

Frueh, as chief scientific officer, will lead all genomic operations and will help partner with both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. He most recently was an executive partner at Opus Three LLC, a consulting group that provides strategic advice for the pharmaceutical, diagnostics and venture capital arenas.
