ISS-Above glows when the space station orbits near you

Posted: at 2:45 pm

Get alerts anytime the International Space Station flies over your location, so you can wave, send a tweet, or run outside to see it at night.

It's easy to forget that there's a big floating box full of people orbiting about 200 miles above us. The ISS-Above project on Kickstarter wants to be your reminder. It gives out alerts anytime the space station flies above your location, so you can wave, send a tweet to the station, or run outside to see it at night.

The brains behind ISS-Above is a Raspberry Pi system with a memory card loaded with your location information. LEDs light up to alert you to the space station's presence. There are different case options depending on the look you want your gadget to have, including some colorful 3D-printed options.

A complete ISS-Above device preloaded with your location goes for a pledge price of $115. If you just want the memory card with your location and custom Twitter login for sending a quick "hello" to the ISS, then it's just $42. This is a good option if you want to make your own custom alert device. The project has until February 27 to meet its $5,000 funding goal.

Back when the space shuttle was still in operation, I met my mother to see both the shuttle and ISS together in the night sky, two little pinpoints of light moving rapidly out of view. "There are people up there," was all I could say to her, all my years of "Star Trek" fandom and childhood astronaut dreams running through my head.

I see ISS-Above as a mini-celebration of humans in space, a reminder that we really did manage to get people off the planet, and they're still up there, living and working above.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ NASA opens a new era this month in its exploration of our home planet with the launch of the first in a series of Earth science instruments to the International Space Station. A media briefing on this addition to NASAs Earth-observing program will air at 1 p.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 8, on NASA Television and the agencys website.

The first Earth-observing instrument to be mounted on the exterior of the space station will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, on the next SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services flight. ISS-RapidScat will monitor ocean winds for climate research, weather predictions and hurricane monitoring from the space stations unique vantage point.

The second instrument is the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS), a laser instrument that will measure clouds and the location and distribution of pollution, dust, smoke, and other particulates in the atmosphere. CATS will follow ISS-RapidScat on the fifth SpaceX space station resupply flight.

The briefing will take place in the NASA TV studio at the agencys Headquarters, located at 300 E Street SW in Washington. The briefing panelists are:

Julie Robinson, ISS Program chief scientist, NASAs Johnson Space Center, Houston

Steve Volz, associate director for flight programs in the Earth Science Division, NASA Headquarters, Washington

Melanie Miller, lead SpaceX-4 robotics officer, Johnson

23andMe aims to be Google for genetic research

Posted: at 2:44 pm

MOUNTAIN VIEW -- In less than a decade, biotech company 23andMe has turned a refrigerator full of spit into one of the largest databases of personal genetics information in the world.

The brainchild of Anne Wojcicki, the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe began in 2006 as a startup mailing DNA testing kits to customers' front doors and asking them to mail back a vial of saliva. Eight years later, the company is the gatekeeper of a database of hundreds of thousands of people's DNA -- a self-described Google for genetics information.

"It's actually bigger than anything else I can think of, way bigger," said Lisa Brooks, program director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health.

23andMe has begun selling that genetics data to researchers and pharmaceutical companies to conduct large-scale medical studies, making it an emerging leader in a largely underexplored, and at times hotly debated, area of scientific research. In the last couple of months, 23andMe has announced a joint effort with Pfizer to research inflammatory bowel disease, released findings from a joint study of more than 100,000 people that made new discoveries on Parkinson's disease, and received a $1.4 million grant from the NIH.

But as the guardian of a very lucrative set of data -- the accuracy of which has come under question -- critics say the Mountain View company also may pose a threat to consumers' privacy.

Most medical studies take months or years to solicit enough volunteers. But 23andMe puts the genetic information of 700,000 people at researchers' fingertips, allowing medical studies to be fast-tracked and new treatments to make their way into hospitals sooner, experts say, giving patients with chronic diseases a better quality of life.

"Instead of actually having to do clinical trials the old-fashioned way, we can enable researchers to get their answers instantaneously," Wojcicki said in an interview with this newspaper. "And they pay us for that."

But some experts worry 23andMe users have no idea where their own genetic information will end up. Because the company is relying on data sales to become profitable -- selling $99 home genetic testing kits doesn't pull in the big-dollar revenue -- 23andMe may disseminate consumers' genetic information not only to government agencies and research institutions, say legal and bioethics experts, but also to big pharmaceutical companies, marketers and advertisers.

"There are a lot of people who would want to use that data. There's a lot of money potentially locked up in that data," said Charles Seife, a professor at New York University and longtime science writer.

Indeed, in a 2013 interview with The New York Times, Wojcicki said, "I remember in the early days of Google, Larry (Page) would say, 'I just want the world's data on my laptop.' I feel the same way about health care. I want the world's data accessible."
