'Increasing censorship' in Venezuela, says fired cartoonist

FIRED: "I was informed of my sacking from El Universal over this caricature and my awkward attitude over graphic satire, " veteran cartoonist Suprani said via Twitter.

The firing of a longtime editorial cartoonist at El Universal newspaper for drawings critical of Venezuela's government caused a protest Friday by former colleagues concerned about censorship of opposition viewpoints.

Cartoonist Rayma Suprani's firing this week reflects the country's "increasing censorship," according to a statement issued by staff at the newspaper.

Long an opposition voice in Venezuelan politics, the editorial page of the 105-year-old newspaper was often critical of Venezuela's socialist government, including President Nicolas Maduro and his predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez. The newspaper was acquired in July by interests aligned with the Chavista government. Since then, numerous columnists have left the publication.

"We're sorry that (Rayma) is no longer with us and we see (her firing) as one of the major costs that the new ownership is paying for trying to adapt to an editorial line favourable to the government," the staff's statement said.

Suprani sent a message over social media Wednesday saying she was let go because her cartoons made the Maduro government "uncomfortable." Her last sketch, published on Sept. 17, showed two fever charts one atop the other. One was labelled "Health" and tracked a patient's normal heart beat. The other was labelled "Venezuela's Health" and showed a flat line, or cardiac arrest.

Venezuela is suffering from a generally weak economy, inflation running at higher than 60 percent, a devaluing currency and scarcities of basic food and household items.

Under Chavez and Maduro, Venezuela's socialist government has vigorously attacked or neutralised critics in TV, radio and print media. The critical RCTV station lost its broadcast license in 2007, and TV owner Guillermo Zuloaga was jailed in 2010 on hoarding charges he said were designed to muzzle him. He later sold his interest in the station.

Defiant Singaporeans watch banned docu in Malaysia

Hundreds of defiant Singaporeans protesting censorship gathered in Malaysia to see a documentary banned by regulators in their home country as a threat to national security

JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia Hundreds of defiant Singaporeans protesting censorship gathered in Malaysia on Friday, September 19, to see a documentary banned by regulators in their home country as a threat to national security.

'To Singapore, With Love' poster

The film, "To Singapore, with Love", examines the case of political exiles in the city-state and features interviews with nine former activists, student leaders, and self-confessed communists who fled Singapore from the 1960s until the 1980s and are currently settled in Malaysia, Britain and Thailand.

Organizers estimated 400 people watched the screening, saying most of the audience was made up of Singaporeans who had crossed the border to view the production in the southern Malaysian city of Johor Bharu.

The Media Development Authority (MDA), Singapore's media regulator, on September 10 banned the documentary, saying it provided a "distorted and untruthful" account of the exiles' situation.

It said the film's contents undermined national security because it showed "legitimate actions of the security agencies to protect the national security and stability of Singapore are presented in a distorted way as acts that victimized innocent individuals".

According to the Singapore government, a number of the exiles featured in the film were former members of the Communist Party of Malaya, which had sought to overthrow governments in Singapore and Malaysia in the 1950s and 1960s.

Singapore became independent from the Malaysian federation in 1965.

"I am disappointed by the reaction of the MDA, I wish it was otherwise of course...I spent a lot of time making it and really would have liked this film to have been seen (in Singapore)," director Tan Pin Pin told the audience in remarks after the screening.

Ron Paul blasts lawmakers who support war with ISIS

Posted: at 9:41 am

By Ashley Killough, CNN

updated 10:54 PM EDT, Fri September 19, 2014

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Alexandria, Virginia (CNN) -- Sen. Rand Paul said this week that he would vote in favor of going to war with ISIS, but his father, former Rep. Ron Paul, made it clear Friday night that he sharply opposes further U.S. involvement in the Mideast region.

Speaking at a libertarian-leaning conference, Ron Paul slammed the "bipartisan support" among congressional lawmakers for "rubber-stamping what President Obama wants" in the fight against the militant group.

More broadly, he suggested that Senate Republicans aren't that different from their Democratic counterparts.

Some people think "if the Republicans take over the Senate this year, that will hamstring the president and everything's going to be OK," he said at the Liberty Political Action Conference in Alexandra, Virginia. "That's a joke."

"It wouldn't be OK because they all believe in the same thing, they believe in the federal reserve and they believe in the war. They believe in the spending and the intervention overseas," he said.

Obama's proposed plan includes expanded air strikes against ISIS and arming and training Syrian rebels who are also fighting off the threat.

Congress has not voted specifically to authorize air strikes against ISIS, but Rand Paul has said he would vote in favor of doing so.

Libertarians give Paul a pass

Posted: at 9:41 am

Rand Paul insists hes not an isolationist. Luckily for him, many in his libertarian base are willing to let him keep saying that.

A movement that often demands ideological purity is, for now, largely giving the potential 2016 presidential contender a pass, even as he appears to take some foreign policy positions well beyond traditional libertarian limits.

Libertarians say theyre willing to look the other way because the Kentucky Republican the son of isolationist iconoclast Ron Paul is their best hope for taking their views into the mainstream and all the way to the White House. In more than a dozen interviews at a libertarian conference this week in Alexandria, Virginia, many attendees said they understand if Paul, who recently came out in favor of airstrikes against militants in Iraq, has to hedge on some issues to gain broader appeal but that they still believe hes one of them at heart.

(Also on POLITICO: House GOP replaces law firm in Obama lawsuit)

Hes playing two games, said John Walsh, a former professor of physiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Hes trying to position himself so he doesnt get tripped up and ruled out [of 2016], and at the same time, maintain his anti-interventionism.

Paul already faces deep skepticism from many establishment Republicans. They are quick to note that he once espoused isolationist-leaning views, including arguing for ending all foreign aid, including to Israel; reining in defense spending and expressing deep reluctance to intervene in the Middle East. He has since distanced himself from some of those positions saying, for instance, that he would not support ending aid to Israel anytime soon but hawkish members of the GOP donor class remain unconvinced.

When people meet Sen. Paul in person, theyre impressed by him, and he exceeds the expectations they have based upon the rantings of his father, said one Republican who works closely with hawkish GOP donors. He can change his positions now and come across as friendly in one-on-one meetings, but he still, at some point, is going to have to explain for his previous positions. And by the way, if he actually flips to a pro-Israel or more interventionist foreign policy, hes going to lose a lot of his base libertarian isolationist supporters.

(Also on POLITICO: Will Dems go all-out to beat Roberts?)

But at this weeks Liberty Political Action Conference, it was clear that, for now, Paul maintains a large reservoir of support even among the most hardcore libertarians.

More than 600 ardent libertarian activists gathered for the event, which is tied to Ron Paul, who is idolized at LPAC. Those gathered were far from mainstream Republicans: Many are deeply anti-war and pro-pot; several could be heard muttering conspiracy theories about how past presidential elections were stolen from Ron Paul; one screamed at a reporter for ruining America. Yet they represent an energetic segment of the grass roots that would be vital to a Rand Paul presidential bid.
