Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine Forms Collaboration with National University Ireland Galway
ROCHESTER, Minn. The Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine and colleagues at the National University Ireland Galway have signed a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) to pave the way for joint clinical trials using regenerative therapies.
The MOU follows years of close collaboration with NUI Galways Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) and the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials (NFB) and will focus on adult stem cell therapy, gene therapy, biomaterials and biomedical engineering. Furthermore, the agreement facilitates ongoing student and staff exchange between Galway and the United States.

Anthony Windebank, M.D., deputy director for Discovery, Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine, and Professor Timothy OBrien, director of the REMEDI, were among those present at the signing in Galway.
Both the National University Ireland Galway and the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine have laboratories which are compliant with current good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations as it applies to cell manufacturing, says Professor OBrien. This allows us to initiate joint trials of regenerative therapies that will produce identical cell products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency are making efforts to streamline and facilitate introduction of new therapies on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Carrying out these approval processes and completing joint studies will facilitate more rapid introduction of new therapies for patients.

Gene Mutation Discovered in Blood Disorder

Newswise Philadelphia, Sept. 23, 2014 An international team of scientists has identified a gene mutation that causes aplastic anemia, a serious blood disorder in which the bone marrow fails to produce normal amounts of blood cells. Studying a family in which three generations had blood disorders, the researchers discovered a defect in a gene that regulates telomeres, chromosomal structures with crucial roles in normal cell function.
Identifying this causal defect may help suggest future molecular-based treatments that bypass the gene defect and restore blood cell production, said study co-leader Hakon Hakonarson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Applied Genomics at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
Hakonarson and CHOP colleagues collaborated with Australian scientists on the study, published online Sept. 9 in the journal Blood.
Were thrilled by this discovery which has advanced our understanding of certain gene mutations and the causal relationship to specific diseases, said study co-leader Tracy Bryan, Ph.D., Unit Head of the Cell Biology Unit at the Childrens Medical Research Institute in Westmead, New South Wales, Australia.
The research team studied an Australian family with aplastic anemia and other blood disorders, including leukemia. Hakonarson and lead analyst Yiran Guo, Ph.D., along with genomics experts from BGI-Shenzhen, performed whole-exome sequencing on DNA from the families and identified an inherited mutation on the ACD gene, which codes for the telomere-binding protein TPP1.
Telomeres, complex structures made of DNA and protein, are located on the end of chromosomes, where they protect the chromosomes stability. They are sometimes compared to plastic tips at the end of shoelaces that prevent the laces from fraying.
Telomeres shorten after each cell division, and gradually lose their protective function. Aging cells, with their shortened telomeres, become progressively more vulnerable to DNA damage and cell death. Separately from the aging process, certain inherited and acquired disorders may shorten telomeres and injure rapidly dividing blood-forming cells produced in bone marrow. This leads to bone marrow failure, one example of which is aplastic anemia.
Bryans team investigated the function of the ACD gene. They determined that the mutation shortened telomeres and interrupted the ability of telomeres to attract the enzyme telomerase, which counteracts telomere shortening and thus protects cells.

How to determine black marketing?
Posted: at 4:42 pm
In a market-driven economy, it is difficult to determine whether the price that is being charged is black-marketing
September 24, 2014:
Recently, the Chief Minister of Bihar, Jitan Ram Manjhi, stirred up a controversy when he said that hoarding and black marketing of goods by small traders will not be treated as a crime. He may have been politically incorrect yet he was logically correct.
The hoarding and black marketing by small traders have no material impact on the demand and supply of goods in the market as the quantity of goods being hoarded by these small traders are insignificant.
Black marketing might be socially reprehensible and ethically wrong but there is nothing to prevent a businessperson from increasing the price to meet the pressing needs of the escalating cost.
In a market-driven economy, where there is no price ceiling, it is difficult to determine whether the price that is being charged is black-marketing. In the case of commodities, where there is no concept of an MRP, the concept of black marketing is even more questionable.
Blaming the small traders of hoarding and black-marketing creates more panic than to actually resolving supply side concerns. In modern commercial economy, hoarding and black marketing is a flawed logic that is often blamed for price increase. Small traders with limited financial resources can hardly make any dent on the price of a commodity or its availability.
Politicians browbeat the mythical hoarders for price rise often forgetting that the activity of hoarding needs very large and continuous supply of finance which no small trader possesses in India.
The agricultural physical market in Bihar and other States do not operate on a leveraged model and is also not a heavily financed model, unlike the trade of crude and metals in the international scenario.
In the past, it has been conclusively proven that when non-binding price ceilings are put in place to prevent price gouging in the event of natural disasters, it may actually reduce incentives for sellers to be well-stocked with goods as they will be unable to command the full market price for the commodities.

Denver Students Protest Censorship Of History In Curriculum
Posted: at 4:41 pm
One poster said Censoring history = No Education.
Another read We deserve to know the truth.
The signs were just a few lining the streets as hundreds of students from at least seven Denver-area schools walked out of their classrooms Tuesday and Wednesday to protest a proposal by a member of the Jefferson County School Board, according to CNN affiliates KDVR and KMGH.
The proposal calls for a new panel to review the schools curricula, but thats not the part that has students and parents outraged.
It is the call for a review of the Advanced Placement curriculum for U.S. history classes to ensure that teaching materials present positive aspects of U.S. history and its heritage. According to the wording of the proposal, teaching materials should promote citizenship, patriotism (and) respect for authority and not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.
I understand that they want to take out our very important history of slavery and dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it portrays the U.S. in a negative light, said Casey McAndrew, a high school senior.
Ben Murky, a high school junior, said, The censorship of U.S. history is wrong, and I think its pretty communist.
The protest followed walkouts by students on Monday and a protest Friday, when at least 50 teachers called in sick, according to KDVR.
I think its time we hear from the kids on how its impacting them, because it is, and its very scary for them whats happening here, parent Andrea Stevens said.
Jefferson County Superintendent Dan McMinimee tried to stem the outrage by stressing that no changes in the curriculum have been finalized.

Blog: Diversity, censorship, and criticism
Posted: at 4:41 pm
The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutras community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
There's a lot of debate right now about diversity and inclusivity in games. The fact that there is a lot of debate is good, the nature of a lot of the debate less so. Today I want to talk about a specific facet of one argument; the idea that feminism, or more broadly thegeneral diversitymovement, is out to 'censor the artistic creativity' of games designers.
The idea is that by criticising sexist or exclusionist elements in videogames, proponents of diversity are actually seeking to control and censor the work ofthe artistsdesigning these videogames by forcing them to adopt more inclusive, more 'PC' elements.
Now a lot of this argument can be boiled down to 'actually I like chainmail bikinis, so everyone else should shut up' which is simple enough to write off, but then I remembered the debate aroundthe gameDragon's Crownand thought that it might actually be worth having a discussion about artistic freedom, criticism, censorship, and the difference between those last two words.
Dragon's Crownis a game by Vanillaware designed as a homage to the oldGolden Axestyle of scrolling beat-em-up. The game features hand dawn art byGeorge Kamitani, and drew ire at the time, particularly from Kotaku writer Jason Schreier, for its portrayal of its female characters. The who don't know their meme can get aquick rundown here, view theoriginal article by Schreier here, anda response by Penny Arcade'sJerry Holkins, which represents the common opposition to Schreier's view at the time.
I remember being conflicted. On the one hand, I can see why people would see the art as distasteful - at first glance it looks exactly like the sort of bad-anime oversexualisation designed to appeal to adolescent boys at the exclusion of everyone else. One the other hand though, I reallylikeKamitani's art, grotesque sexualisation included, and respect his right to draw whatever the hell he likes.
The argument - at least initially - seemed to be that for games to become more progressive then we need to see less art like Kamitani's, which I disagree with on personal grounds - because I like his art - but also because this smacks of censorship. Progressiveness should never call forlessartistic expression, regardless of whether that artistic expression is deemed tasteful or not.
This seems to be the argument wielded by a lot of those against the social justice movement - that progressives are seeking to censor art and homogenise entertainment by forcing designers to cater to every possible point of view with each of their products. Art that caters to the male gaze is still art, after all, so surely decrying the overabundance of it is also a cry for censorship?
In fact, the progressive movement is actually about criticism, rather than censorship, and there's a big difference between the two. It's the difference between designers making informed artistic decisions and falling unwittingly into using tropes without knowing any better. This is actually the point of projects likeTropes vs. Women in Video Games- not to highlight every moderately sexist element in games and declareyou should not do this, but to bring these tropes to people's attention so we can address them critically and constructively.

Exhibit B: Victim Of Mob Censorship Or Vile History Used As Entertainment?

Protestors have forced the cancellation of the Barbicans latest show, Exhibit B, which has been branded racist by those opposing it.
The withdrawal of the work has polarised opinion some taking delight at the effectiveness of the protest, while others decry what they feel is censorship by a vocal group of protesters.
The work by South African artist Brett Bailey was to portray black actors in chains and cages in recreations of the human zoos which were an appalling feature of European 19th century history that saw publicexhibitionsof people, often kidnapped from Africa.
Over 23,000 people signed a petition to have the performance shut down, and many gathered outside the Barbican Centre last night to protest. Police were called, but no arrests were made.
The Barbican says it was the extreme nature of these proteststhat led it to cancel the event.
In a statement, the centre says:
We find it profoundly troubling that such methods have been used to silence artists and performers and that audiences have been denied the opportunity to see this important work.
Exhibit B raises, in a serious and responsible manner, issues about racism; it has previously been shown in 12 cities, involved 150 performers and been seen by around 25,000 people with the responses from participants, audiences and critics alike being overwhelmingly positive.

Why is AP History causing controversy in Jeffco?
Posted: at 4:41 pm
GOLDEN, Colo. - Censorship is in the eye of the beholder.
Pardon the adulterated aphorism, but both sides of the controversy in Jeffco Public Schools seem to be concerned that the other wants to censor history.
The argument that has now caused disruptions over four consecutive school days, including massive walkouts involving hundreds of students, is centered on a proposed review of the Advanced Placement U.S. History curriculum -- abbreviated APUSH.
Newly elected school board member Julie Williams proposed forming a committee to review the content of the APUSH curriculum. One day after that proposal and another about teacher compensation appeared on a board meeting agenda, two high schools were forced to close because of a high number of teacher absences. The teachers returned to work Monday, but students have continued the protests.
The proposal submitted to the board suggested the committee would make sure that U.S. history materials "promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights. Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage. Content pertaining to political and social movements in U.S. history should present balanced and factual treatments of the positions."
Conifer High School teachers took to the "Support Jeffco Kids" Facebook page on Monday, alleging that the proposal would "require teachers to completely ignore certain aspects of American history rather than teach the entirety of American history."
APUSH is administered by the College Board, the same group that runs the SAT test. The new curriculum, summarized in the framework document, became effective in fall of 2014. Hundreds of other documents posted by the College Board delve deeper into each area of the curriculum.
Williams links the changes in APUSH to the Common Core -- a set of academic standards supported by President Barack Obama's administration but rejected by some states. Williams noted in a letter that she had also previously proposed opting out of the Common Core.
-- CONSERVATIVES NATIONWIDE WORKING TO REVIEW APUSH --
Texas has notably rejected both APUSH and the Common Core. Their decision on APUSH came last week, amid uproar in conservative circles about perceived anti-American bias in the new curriculum and exam.
