Censorship, despite intent, is unpatriotic

L
ast week in Jefferson County, Colorado, nearly a thousand high school students walked out of their classrooms in protest of proposed curriculum changes to their history classes.
The walkouts were staged in response to a proposal submitted by the new conservative school board, which suggested setting up a review committee to make sure Advanced Placement U.S. history classes promote patriotism, free enterprise and respect for authority. According to a draft of the proposal, AP U.S. history teachers would have to present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage, while being prohibited from encouraging or condoning civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.
Teachers and students in several schools across the district have understandably expressed concern that this review committee will lead to censorship of educational materials.
School board member Julie Williams, a supporter of the review committee, criticized the current AP U.S. history curriculum for focusing too much on gender, class, race, ethnicity and grievance. In her eyes, emphasizing the historical struggles of different groups is American-bashing.
I understand the desire to encourage students to be proud of their country, but that patriotism must not come at the cost of distorting or censoring history. This proposal would essentially strip educators of their ability to offer students a comprehensive course on U.S. history. Instead of encouraging students to think critically and examine how the past shapes the present, teachers would be restricted to only presenting materials that portray America in a wholly favorable light.
These changes would essentially transform a college-level history class into a political platform with the goal of endorsing American pride while simultaneously discouraging civil disobedience. In addition to being a shameful attempt to propagandize education for ideological purposes, the proposal is also inherently un-American.
One of the most cherished rights of an American citizen is the ability to protest unjust laws. Such protests contributed to the abolition of slavery, the approval of womens suffrage and the social progress achieved during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. If people werent willing to stand up against the government and make their voices heard, these monumental steps in our history might never have occurred. Civil disobedience has been essential for driving positive social change since the founding of our country.
The students who are rightfully protesting against the school boards proposal have been backed by the College Board, which issued this statement of support: These students recognize that the social disorder can and sometimes must be disrupted in the pursuit of liberty and justice. The board emphasized these ideas are essential within the study of a college-level, AP U.S. History course.
The Jefferson County School Board majority may believe its actions will promote patriotism, but censorship in the history classroom will only promote ignorance and indifference to the social struggles that have made our nation what it is today. Students dont deserve to be robbed of the challenging and rewarding experience of a college-level history class, and they most certainly dont deserve to be treated as children who need to be told what to think.

Ron Paul: Scotland's secessionist movement should inspire U.S.
Posted: at 8:45 am

Former Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas Republican who became a libertarian icon after two presidential runs, wrote on his website this week that Scotland's failed bid for independence should encourage secessionist movements in the United States and around the globe.
"Americans who embrace secession are acting in a grand American tradition," Paul wrote. "The Declaration of Independence was written to justify secession from Britain. Supporters of liberty should cheer the growth in support for secession, as it is the ultimate rejection of centralized government and the ideologies of Keynesianism, welfarism, and militarism."
The former congressman said that support for secession is growing in America, citing as evidence the campaign to split California into six states. While the initiative didn't gain enough support to make it on the November ballot, more than one million Californians signed a petition to get it on the ballot.
"The possibility that people will break away from an oppressive government is one of the most effective checks on the growth of government," Paul wrote. "It is no coincidence that the transformation of America from a limited republic to a monolithic welfare-warfare state coincided with the discrediting of secession as an appropriate response to excessive government."
Paul similarly touted the virtues of secessionist movements in 2012, when he was still in Congress.
Ron Paul's son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, had to distance himself last year from a member of his staff who supported pro-Southern secessionist and racist views. The senator accepted the staffer's resignation and argued that libertarianism is "a philosophy that encourages a more tolerant worldview."
Rand Paul appears poised to follow in his father's footsteps and launch his own presidential bid, but he's made clear he wants to be judged for his own views -- not those of his father, his staff or anyone else. Earlier this year, the senator said he has "pretty much quit answering" questions about his father's views. "I've been in the Senate three years, and I have created a record of myself," he said.

Rand Paul wont like this: Ron Paul weighs in on secessionist movements in the U.S.

As he moves toward a 2016 bid for the Republican presidential nomination, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is working overtime to win over GOP factions skeptical of the conservative libertarian brand embodied by Paul and his father, former Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Though Rand Paul got his start in electoral politics working on his fathers campaigns, the success of his likely presidential campaign depends on distancing himself from Ron Pauls more strident rhetoric regarding U.S. economic policy and foreign intervention, and from the elder Pauls extensive history of bigoted and racist commentary.
In a lengthy profile of the Kentuckian for the forthcoming issue of the New Yorker, Ryan Lizza offers a glimpse at the nascent Paul campaigns early efforts to create space between father and son ahead of the 2016. An aide to the senator expressed exasperation that the old man is still out there speaking his mind after Ron Paul released a statement supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after the Russian-backed rebels showed down a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine. Rand Paul, commenting on his familys ties to far-right and white supremacist figures, told Lizza that he was never associated with any of these people. Ever. Only through being related to my dad, who had association with them. (Not quite.)
Pauls claim might not withstand scrutiny, but this much is clear: his efforts to keep his father from becoming a problem are unlikely to succeed if Ron Paul continues to voice inflammatory views. And Ron Pauls latest essay makes clear he has no intention of fading quietly into the night.
Hailing the September 18 independence referendum in Scotland in which voters rejected a split from the United Kingdom Paul said the referendum should cheer supporters of the numerous secession movements springing up around the globe despite its failure. Paul left little doubt that he counts himself among their ranks.
Americans who embrace secession are acting in a grand American tradition, Paul writes. The Declaration of Independence was written to justify secession from Britain. Supporters of liberty should cheer the growth in support for secession, as it is the ultimate rejection of centralized government and the ideologies of Keynesianism, welfarism, and militarism.
Paul doesnt endorse secession as an outcome so much as a useful form of blackmail.
The possibility that people will break away from an oppressive government is one of the most effective checks on the growth of government, he posits, proceeding to state that the threat of secession will make it easier to achieve the [d]evolution of power to smaller levels of government.
In a subsequent interview with National Journal, Paul pronounced himself real pleased with secessionist movements in the U.S. His only lament is that there arent more.
[O]n second thought, you think, Why not? Why not more? Paul wondered to National Journals Rebecca Nelson.

8 superfoods that arent all that super
Posted: at 8:45 am
Five hundred years ago, Ponce de Leon searched in vain for the Fountain of Youth and immortality (in Florida, no less). Had old Ponce been a 21st-century man, he might have gone to his local supermarket and searched the aisles for humanitys latest health and longevity obsession, superfood. Virtually every newspaper, magazine and broadcast outlet, major or minor, has extolled the miracles of superfoods, often more than once. Superfoods are minimally processed foods that are so nutrient-packed they promise to protect your body against all manner of illness and add years to your life, all the while supercharging your sex life and growing hair on your head, never mind perking up your brain and freshening your breath. Theyre the veritable Fountain of Youthor at least thats what they say. Lets examine eight of the major superfoods, their purported super powers and the facts behind the hype machine.
1. Green Tea
The Story:Green tea has been popularized in the past several years as a health tonic extraordinaire. While commonly consumed in Japan, it only recently has caught on in America. Green tea, unlike regular black teas, is made from unfermented tea leaves (black tea uses the same leaf but it is fermented). This minimally processed tealeaf contains higher concentrations of antioxidants (specifically one called EGCG) which enthusiasts claim slows cellular growth and can prevent cancer. Green tea is also supposedly helpful in lowering cholesterol and battling Alzheimers disease.
The Reality:Green tea is good for you. Two or three cups a day, no argument there. Especially in lieu of sugary beverages or coffee with half-and-half. But studies have shown mixed results in lowering cholesterol (it lowered total cholesterol but the bad stuffLDL and triglycerideremained unchanged), and other studies have suggested it may block the effects of some anti-cancer medications. Additionally, drinking it piping hot may increase the chance of contracting esophageal cancer, especially among smokers and alcohol drinkers. Alzheimers? There have been no human trials to back up lab tests (which have shown some helpful benefit of green tea in combatting the disease).
2. Garlic
The Story:Who doesnt love garlic? So how convenient that it is also good for you. Super good, say proponents. The major health ingredient in garlic is allicin, and it is contained in all forms of garlic, even that powdered stuff you sprinkle on your slice. Garlic will lower your cholesterol, your blood pressure, prevent heart disease, and battle cancer to boot, treat yeast infections, and shrink the old prostate. And leave your breath minty fresh. No waitnot that last one.
The Reality:Eat your garlic. Its delicious. But studies suggest that garlics super powers are a bit stinky. They show a limited association with health benefits, but not a definitive cause-and-effect. Plus most of the studies of garlic are centered on a study of the so-called Mediterranean diet, which is high in garlic content, but also high in fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain breads, monosaturated fats, red wine, and other healthy stuff. The health benefit may be with the diet as a whole, primarily from just eating a balanced low-processed diet. And beware, garlic appears to have some interaction with some HIV drugs. Current evidence does not support the use of garlic supplements toimprove health, says Alison Hornby, dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association.
3. Dark Chocolate
The Story:Undoubtedly, there were celebrations galore when publications started touting the health benefits of eating dark chocolate. We knew it all along! Tastes good and good for you! And its true, sort of. Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants called flavonoids, which help lower blood pressure, lower risk of heart disease, battle diabetes, perk up the brain function, and lower the stress level. Not so fast, though.
The Reality:The studies on dark chocolate make associations but do not present conclusive evidence. While there is some evidence that it lowers blood pressure, there is no evidence that dark chocolate prevents heart disease. And chocolate products are generally packed with sugar and (in the case of milk chocolate) whole milk, which present other health questions. So by all means treat yourself to a small chunk of dark chocolate a day. Stick to dark chocolate high in cacao content (70% or more), or sprinkle some cacao nibs into your morning cereal. Just dont think they will be selling M&Ms in the health food store anytime soon.

MNACs modernist makeover
Posted: at 8:44 am
The National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) in Barcelona is best known for its medieval art, particularly its collection of Romanesque murals, which is considered one of the most important in the world. But a significant chunk of the museums holdings of around 30,000 pieces is modern art, dating back to the beginning of the last century, and up to the 1950s. Now, around 1,300 pieces, half of them never exhibited in public before, are to go on display in a specially prepared space covering 4,000 square meters of the museums first floor.
The walls of the space, formerly a neutral off-white, have been painted in bright colors, while the paintings have been hung seemingly willy-nilly.
One of the MNACs main tasks is to showcase Catalan art through the centuries, but the collection now on display also includes work by Juan Gris, Julio Romero de Torres, Alfred Sisley and Edvard Munch. These all form part of the collection and help to put it in context, says the museums director, Pepe Serra.
Weve presented a big picture of what society was like, with all its contradictions
MNAC director Pepe Serra
When Serra took over three years ago, he made it clear that he wanted to break with tradition, and put the modern art collection in context. As a result, painting, sculpture, posters, cinema, illustrations, furniture, advertising, photography, and particularly architecture are all on display. Together the pieces tell the story of the beginning of modern art, and how realism gradually emerged as the dominant trend in the early 20th century. Paintings such as Mariano Fortunys The Battle of Tetun, which harks back to the styles of the 19th century, become superseded by more lifelike depictions of events.
The exhibition brings the period to life through the faces of the artists as depicted in their self-portraits, as well as those of their wealthy patrons. We have tried to avoid focusing on styles such as Impressionism, Futurism, Cubism, Expressionism, etc., and have instead presented a big picture of what society was like, with all its contradictions, says Serra. The major works are there as well, and are enriched by being seen alongside others created at that time.
The longer-term goal, says Serra, is for the MNAC to become the benchmark for modernism, a movement that developed in Catalonia, represented by artists and architects such as Ramon Casas, Santiago Ruisiol, Miquel Utrillo, Isidre Nonell, Pablo Picasso and Carles Casagemas. Space has been found to present 20 pieces of furniture created by Antoni Gaud, alongside work by his long-time collaborator Josep Maria Jujol.
Works by Juli Gonzlez, Joaquim Sunyer, Josep de Togores, Joaquim Torres-Garca, Salvador Dal and Picasso are all to be found in the 39 sections that make up the collection. There are also pieces related to the Spanish Civil War, among them photographs taken by Agust Centelles, many of which were exhibited alongside Picassos Guernica in the Republican Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris in 1937.
An epilogue is provided in the form of works lent by the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) by Antoni Tpies, Modest Cuixart and Joan Pon, members of the Dau al Set, which attempted to revive surrealism in Spain at the end of the 1940s. Despite having 4,000 square meters at our disposal, we ran out of space, says Serra, who says the Baroque and Renaissance areas of the museum are now to be redesigned.
