Hambycast: Could Rand Paul support gay marriage?

Posted: at 2:42 am

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) -- Campus politics aren't always a clear winner for Rand Paul, as he discovered here this week during an appearance at the College of Charleston.

The Kentucky Republican and potential 2016 contender opened with a familiar riff about government surveillance that won predictable applause -- especially from the many students who represented Young Americans for Liberty, the libertarian outfit created from the ashes of his father Ron Paul's presidential campaigns.

Then a young woman in the audience asked if Paul, who sponsored an anti-abortion bill in 2013 that defines life as beginning at fertilization, is opposed to Plan B, the emergency contraception commonly known as the morning-after pill.

A number of social conservatives -- plenty of them in Iowa -- have condemned the morning-after pill as an on-demand abortion drug, sometimes confusing the contraceptive with RU-486, which can be used to induce abortion.

Noticeably uncomfortable with the question, Paul first gave a terse answer: "I am not opposed to birth control," he said. After a pause, he elaborated. "That's basically what Plan B is. Plan B is taking two birth control pills in the morning and two in the evening, and I am not opposed to that."

Rand Paul: 'I am not opposed to birth control'

Next question.

The exchange was notable because it happened on a college campus -- a place where Paul has made inroads in building support for his libertarian agenda. And it underscored the challenge that lies ahead for him: burnishing the libertarian credentials that make him so appealing to young voters while making sure he doesn't stray so far from the Republican line that he won't be able to win the party's presidential nomination.

Another student here pressed him on "the drug war," asking if Paul would support legalizing marijuana, cocaine and heroin. He said he wasn't supportive of drug use, explaining that pot "is not that great," but said drug laws should be left up to states. Colorado and Washington are experimenting with legalized marijuana, he said, and we should be watching carefully.

KURTZ: How the media are saddling Rand Paul with his fathers baggage – Ron Paul's secession comments could pose …

Posted: at 2:42 am

Rand Paul is the most interesting presidential possibility out there right now. But will the media hang his fathers record around his neck like an albatross?

That may be unfair, since the Kentucky senator is a very different lawmaker and potential 2016 candidate than his father, former Texas congressman and perennial presidential contender Ron Paul. But Im starting to think it may be inevitable.

In fact, in a lengthy New Yorker profile, Rands mother, Carol, says the two men arent far apart:

Everybody that calls [Ron] wants to argue about their differences. They dont really have differences. They might have fractional differences about how to do things, but the press always want to make it into some kind of story that isnt there.

I would beg to differ. Both men are libertarians, to be sure. Ive watched Ron Paul speak to campaign crowds, and he can get them wound up on the gold standard, abolishing the IRS and other issues that make his ardent fans swoon but also rendered him unelectable as a national candidate. Rand Paul is a conservative pragmatist who has been breaking with Republican orthodoxy, particularly when it comes to reaching out to African-Americans.

As the magazine profile by Ryan Lizza makes clear, Rand Pauls life was very much intertwined with his dads career. Growing up, he worked on a number of his fathers campaigns, once taking off a semester to join his unsuccessful Senate race. "Ultimately, Rand was saved from political obscurity by his father. In 2008, Ron Paul decided to run for president. The campaign raised an extraordinary $35 million by cultivating a small but intensely committed following that later carried Rand Pauls message, too.

Paul himself once wrote of his impendingKentucky race:After seeing how the establishment treated my father during his presidential campaign, I had every reason to believe that the powers-that-be would do everything they could to keep another Paul away from the reins of government.

The elder Paul is an isolationist, and while the younger Paul doesnt go that far, he is an outspoken critic of U.S. military intervention abroad and has called for an end to foreign aid. His challenge is to ensure that their approach to world affairs arent morphed in the public mind.

Paul has spent the past few months often clumsily trying to convince voters that his foreign policy differs from his fathers. Rand is perhaps best known, thus far, for his nearly 13-hour filibuster last year to protest the administrations use of dronesa tactic that further convinced Republican hawks that he doesnt share their assessment of the risks posed by terrorism. Over the summer, Paul was under constant attack from rivals, such as Governor Rick Perry, of Texas, who described him as curiously blind to the threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham. As with the criticisms of his past statements on civil rights, Paul felt that he was the victim of a smear campaign. Unfair criticism from people who have partisan goals, he told me.

Interestingly, John McCain, one of Pauls frequent critics, is quoted as saying that the freshman senator has evolved.

Post-human study to Granta | The Bookseller

Posted: at 2:41 am

Published October 3, 2014. By Joshua Farrington

Granta Books has signed To Be a Machine: Encounters with a Post-Human Future by Mark O'Connell.

Senior editor Max Porter signed UK and Commonwealth rights at auction from Karolina Sutton at Curtis Brown on behalf of Amelia Atlas at ICM.

The book is described as "intellectual anatomy" of the transhumanist movement, those who believe technology can enable mankind to transcend the biological conditions of humanity, blending history, cultural criticism, in-depth profiles and essayistic reportage.

Porter said: This is an outstanding piece of work. Marks proposal could be cryogenically frozen to show the robots of the future what a perfect non-fiction pitch was in 2014. To Be a Machine will be deeply intelligent, profoundly timely and frequently hilarious. All of us at Granta believe we have found a non-fiction super star.

North American rights were sold to Doubleday and deals in other foreign territories are being negotiated. To Be a Machine will be published in 2016.

Australia-Cambodia deal puts refugees at risk

Posted: at 2:41 am

Phnom Penh has a poor record on refugee protection and basic rights, says Human Rights Watch.

A new refugee agreement between Australia and Cambodia does not meet Australias commitment to send refugees to a safe third country, and will undermine refugee protection in the region, Human Rights Watch has said.

A Cambodian government press release states that the Australian immigration minister, Scott Morrison, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the settlement of refugees in Cambodia with the Cambodian interior minister, Sar Kheng, in Phnom Penh on 26 September 2014.

Australia and Cambodia have not released the terms of the agreement. However, Morrison has previously said that up to 1,000 asylum seekers sent by Australia to Nauru, where they have been recognised as refugees, may be transferred to Cambodia on a voluntary basis. Although Cambodia is a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has failed to protect refugees and asylum seekers, returning them to countries where they faced persecution.

Australias deal with Cambodia will send people to a country that has a terrible record for protecting refugees and is mired in serious human rights abuses, said Elaine Pearson, Australia director at Human Rights Watch. Australia should have examined these refugee claims itself instead of diverting asylum seekers to Nauru, but at least it should take those found to be refugees instead of shipping them off to Cambodia. Despite Canberras claims, the reality is Cambodia is both unsafe and ill-equipped to handle large numbers of refugees who will be given one-way tickets to Phnom Penh.

Since September 2012, Australia has been sending asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Nauru and Papua New Guinea to be screened there for refugee status. Under the terms of an agreement with Nauru, Australia is committed to helping settle refugees to a third safe country.

Australia has refused to accept returning anyone found to be a refugee to Australia on the grounds that it is pursuing a regional burden-sharing solution. As of 31 August 2014, 1,233 asylum seekers are detained in Nauru. As of 18 September 2014, the Nauru government has carried out 250 status determinations, 206 of whom have been recognised as refugees.

Australia will be failing to meet the terms of its agreement because Cambodia is not a safe third country, Human Rights Watch said.

The Australian government has referred to the transfer to Cambodia as resettlement. However, a spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, has described resettlement in Cambodia as not being a durable solution. Its not in the spirit of resettlement, the spokesman said.

It helps us every day but what has the Human Rights Act done for you?

Posted: at 2:41 am

With all the vitriol, ridicule and scorn it attracts, its easy to forget the Human Rights Act is a force for good. Although the law only came into force in 2000, it incorporates the post-war European Convention On Human Rights, inspired by Sir Winston Churchill.

Ironic when its his Tory party that now want to axe it.

Civil liberties champion Michael Mansfield QC says: If the Human Rights Act were scrapped people would soon realise how our daily lives benefit whether its in health, people in care, child abuse and so many other issues.

But with the amount of flak its facing, its time to ape the classic Romans scene in the Monty Pythons Life of Brian and answer the question: What has the Human Rights Act ever done for us?

An obsession with UFOs saw Aspergers Syndrome sufferer Gary McKinnon hack into Pentagon and Nasa computers. US prosecutors tried to extradite him and he faced a 60-year jail term.

Following a 10-year fight by his family, Home Secretary Theresa May blocked the request in 2012 under Article 3 of the Human Rights Act which forbids degrading treatment or punishment. She said Gary, 46, of Notts, was seriously ill and he would probably commit suicide if taken to the States.

Servicemen and women sent off to war without the correct equipment can now use the Human Rights Act to sue the government.

The UK Supreme Court ruled that relatives of four servicemen who died in Iraq had a right to life when they died inside the lightly-armoured Snatch Land Rovers, nicknamed mobile coffins. At least 37 UK soldiers have died in Iraq and Afghanistan inside these vehicles.

Beth Warren won the right to have a child using her dead husbands sperm thanks to Article 8 of the Human Rights Act, which enshrines respect for for privacy and family life.

After he died in 2012 a sample frozen before he had cancer treatment was due to be destroyed under existing rules until Beth, 28, used the act to block the move. Now the sperm will be frozen until 2023, giving her the choice of when to start a family.

The Moneymakers For Social Games Aren't The Big Spenders

Posted: at 2:40 am

If you pay attention to online gaming, especially in the free to play space, where a game download is free, but extras of all sorts cost money, youll see stories about people spending ridiculous amounts of money in a game far more than a typical $60 disc. For example, theres a report today about a Belgian teenager who spent nearly $50,000 in a single game.

If youre a creator of a free to play game, stories like that might warm your heart. You probably dont want players this extreme its kinda bad publicity but you want to find the kind of players who are willing to spend far more than the price of a typical video game, right?

Wrong.

As it turns out, when you analyze the data for social gaming, the biggest sources of revenue arent the biggest spenders, but rather the most social players even players who dont themselves spend any money at all. Thats been one of the key findings of Ninja Metrics, an analytics firm that explores the data about how players interact with each other in the social gaming space. That interaction, it turns out, is key to predicting how a game will do and what players companies should focus on.

Some influencers spend no money but generate hundreds of thousands of dollars, Ninja Metrics CEO Dmitri Williams told me. That also applies to game time, as well.

The more a game incentivizes players to play together, the stronger this effect is, he continued. For example, the company has used its analytics engine to observe interaction in the game Imperia Online. For that game, the company determined that about 75% of play time is driven by social interaction. That is, Imperia players want to play with their friends far more than they want to play alone.

Using this data, the company can help game developers focus on those social players, rather than the whales, in order to gain new users and retain those influencers.

We can now find out where the influencers came from to find the game and so acquire more users, Williams told me. This helps a game retain the right people and gets them to spend more money when it has them.

This data can also be used to predict churn the likelihood that a player will grow tired of the game and stop playing. So, for example, if theres a player who brings in a lot of revenue through his friends coming in to play the game, you can target that person for different kinds of promotions and see what keeps her playing. But more importantly, a company can test to see what kind of promotion keeps both her and her friends playing the game.

Businesses want to think I have a relationship with my customer, said Williams. But they often forget about the relationships their customers have with each other. But until now, its been hard to see those relationships. That means that promotions and marketing can be less about squeezing particular targets and more about what ensures people have a fun time playing.
