Premiere: Napolian & Dro Carey – 'Silicon City'

Posted: October 6, 2014 at 3:40 pm

Cult American label Software has a habit of throwing up fascinating new voices.

Uniting bedroom talents across the globe, the imprint emphasises a communal relationship, with artists on their roster frequently collaborating.

Launching the Mixware series, Software are encouraging their artists to piece together special, intricate mixes featuring old, new and unreleased material. Each Mixware instalment will be available as a free download, alongside a limited cassette issue.

Napolian is next up. The producer has responded with a deft selection, one which intrudes upon left field hip hop while also retaining a love of experimentalism that locates 8-Bit melodies, fluorescent tones and other aural treats.

Clash is able to premiere a new collaboration, which pits Napolian against Dro Carey. Silicon City is gleeful retro-futurism, with those sharpened synths borrowed straight from the Mega Drive era. This isnt some nostalgic trip, though, with the two producers delivering a slumped hip hop beat which could only be summoned in 2014.

Check it out now.

Three-parent babies are 'genetic engineering' and be banned

Posted: at 9:44 pm

In a letter seen by the Sunday Times to the Commons science and technology committee, which is holding a one-day inquiry into three parent embryos on October 22, a group of scientists said: "The safety of mitochondrial replacement therapy is not yet established sufficiently well to proceed to clinical trials."

However, an editorial in New Scientist said mitochondria "play a key role in some of the most important features of human life. This raises the ethically troubling prospect ... that children conceived in this way will inherit vital traits from three parents."

Stuart Newman, a cell biologist and professor at New York Medical College, will submit his objections this week and said the importance of the outer part of the egg, donated by the second woman, was being played down.

"The mitochondria are ... participants in the development of the organism. This clearly makes any person [brought into being from the procedure] a product of wholesale genetic engineering," he said.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which backs mitochondrial replacement, said it could "see no reason for changing its in-depth and considered views on this matter".

Scientists are closer to understanding human height, new study reports

Posted: at 9:44 pm

Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Scientists believe they now have a better understanding of what determines height in humans. An international group of researchers came together and studied a group of over 250,000 people from different regions of the world. They located over 400 genome regions that appear to be related to determining height, and they found almost 700 genetic variants.

The research, published in Nature Genetics, claims that around 80 percent of human height is based on genes, while the remaining 20 percent is based on external factors like diet. The researchers involved believe these findings could help treat diseases that can be related to height, like osteoporosis. The study further supports the concept that height is largely based on genetics, as is seen by tall parents bearing taller children. The found genes might help scientists study rare syndromes that cause children to grow unusually tall or unusually little.
