Douglas Carswell Wins Clacton for Ukip: Are You a Libertarian? [POLL]
Posted: October 11, 2014 at 1:43 pm
Douglas Carswell, a libertarian, won the Clacton-on-Sea by-election after defecting from the Conservatives to Ukip(Reuters)
This is the Dawn of the Libertarian. Young people just don't love the state in the same way their parents and grandparents did.
Generation Y, the under-thirties, is far more liberal than past generations. If the polls are to be believed, they are the most liberal generation in Britain's history. In both social and economic senses: they believe not just in drug decriminalisation, but lower taxes too.
"We do not pretend to know what is best for everyone, and so we feel that decisions are ideally taken by the persons directly affected by them," said Mark S. Feldner, president of Cambridge Libertarians, a group for students at one of the world's best universities.
"This scepticism about concentrated power, central planning and top-down regulation also encourages individuals to accept responsibility for their own actions."
Feldner was one of the Generation Y libertarians interviewed for an IBTimes UKfeature on the rise of libertarianism among young people in the UK.
And Douglas Carswell, a libertarian defector from the Conservatives to Ukip, just increased his parliamentary majority in a Clacton-on-Sea by-election. He's now Ukip's first elected MP.
But what do you think? Take our poll and show us.

'The Strain' News: Season 1 Finale Recap, Show Renewed for Second Season

A scene from The Strain
"The Strain" season 1 finale titled "The Master" shows Eph and Fet on a mission as they infiltrate the theater through an underground passage where they discover the Master's coffin. Palmer is furious because the Master only restored his health but did not give him immortality, but Eichhorst assures him that he will get what he wishes for once he does the Master's bidding.
Later on, Setrakian and Eph confront the Master and force him outdoors into daylight, believing that this will cause his death. The Master, though badly burned, escapes and Setrakian could not believe that their plan didn't work. They regroup, and Zack stops at his mother's house and said that he has to get some medicine for his asthma, but what he actually got was a photo album. His mother, Kelly, then reappears. She has fully turned into a vampire. Eph shoots Kelly, but only manages to wound her before she escapes.
The season finale of "The Strain" reportedly pulled in 2.091 million total viewers on Oct. 5, which made it the top drama on cable on that night according to Deadline. It has also consistently performed well in DVR, pulling in more than 4 million viewers.
"The Strain" is based on the vampire novels by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who also created the TV series. There are three books in "The Strain" series, and according to del Toro, the first two novels "The Strain" and "The Fall" will be covered by one season each, while the third book, "The Night Eternal," may be split into two or three seasons.
FX has renewed "The Strain" for a 13-episode second season, and production is set to begin in November 2014. Season 2 is slated to premiere in the summer of 2015.

What if your favorite Disney animals were human?
Posted: at 1:42 pm
Disney animators have always personified their animal characters. From Cinderellas mouse henchmen, which had sewing capabilities that could rival those of Project Runwaycontestants, to The Little Mermaids crabby Sebastian leading the oceanic orchestra under da sea, our favorite Disney animalsare almost too human.
Digital artistChacckco, and little bit of bibbidi bobbidi boo, have imagined what Disneyslovable animals would be if they were humans and the results are pretty incredible.
With a graphite a pencil, The Three Caballerosare transformed into New York gangsters, Flounder into an adoring school boy and, probably the most mind-blowing, is CarsLightning McQueen as the driver of his own race car talk about Freaky Friday!

Search Engine Leap.It Wins Steve Case's $100K Startup Competition
Posted: at 1:42 pm

In the afternoon of the first day of this weeks Big Kansas City technology entrepreneurship conference, billionaire and ex-CEO of AOL Steve Case listened to ten representatives from ten different startups talk about their companies. They had five minutes to give their pitch (no easy task, as the timer beeped mid-sentence on several occasions) and field questions from Case and a panel of judges.
The prize? A $100,000 investment from Case as part of his Rise of the Rest road tour. During this tour, Case is visiting five cities Detroit, Minneapolis, Des Moines, Kansas City, and St. Louis. At each stop, 10 startup companies compete for that $100,000 investment. The judges for the competition included Gary Shapiro of Consumer Electronics Association; Sarah Granger, an author and entrepreneur; Kimberly Bryant of Black Girls Code; and Robb Heineman, CEO of the soccer team Sporting Kansas City.
Kansas Citys competition was part of the Big Kansas City conference, focusing on technology startups and entrepreneurs. The offerings in the competition were a pretty diverse bunch, ranging from Keyzio, an app-based solution that aims to make buying and selling a house less expensive, to ShotTracker, a wearable that lets you know how well youre playing basketball; to FitBark, a wearable collar for your dog so you can monitor her health.
The winner of the competition and $100,000 investment was Leap.it. The companys goal is modest. They want to challenge Google in the search engine space.
Their key to doing this is by focusing on search results in a different way. For one, rather than a list of text links, Leap.it provides a much richer visual set of search results. Here, for example, is what you get when you type in Forbes:
Example of Leap.it search results.
The search engine is socially based. Search results depend on whats trending on Twitter and other networks, which are then integrated with web results.
Twitters great at real time stuff, founder and CEO Mike Farmer told me. But it doesnt provide context. By relating this to web objects, youre sort of overlaying this real-time stream. Like a map thats overlaid with real-time weather.
Leap.it users can also provide curated searches called perspectives a visually organized group of articles like Best Actors of the Past 50 Years or things to do in New York City or the best amusement park rides.

Zaha! : Zaha Hadid, of All People, Will Design a Human Rights Institute
Posted: at 1:42 pm
Controversial starchitect Zaha Hadid just unveiled renderings for the Sleuk Rith Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, presenting a slight departure from her signature colorless blob futurism. Instead, the future home of some one million archival documents of the Khmer Rouge era will be five wooden towers inspired by ancient Cambodian temple sites.
The towers, to be built from locally-sourced timber, will be distinct spaces on the ground level. But the higher you go, the more the towers will "interlock" to encourage more interaction among different components of the institutionwhich in addition to the massive archive, will also include a media center, library, and graduate school, all dedicated to preventing human rights atrocities in the future.
In all it's an interesting project for Hadid, who's been embroiled in a string controversies of late. Her name has been dropped in connection to forced evictions in Azerbaijan (to make room for the construction of her Heydar Aliyev building), deplorable labor conditions in Qatar, and Olympic stadiums that are, in the words of petitioning architects, "overwhelmingly large for the context." That's not even mentioning the fact that she's got a lawsuit going against a critic. This is all to say thatwho knows?perhaps this project is an attempt to ameliorate her public image. Anyway, it looks pretty cool:

Ansel Elgort: A futurist playing actor
Posted: at 1:42 pm
DN: Between the world of "Divergent" and "Men, Women and Children," which is more dystopian?
AE: This movie has that dark undertone that the world is screwed, but I don't think the world is screwed. The story line between Kaitlyn and I is positive, and I think that there are people that no matter what happens with technology are still going to be people. It's not going to completely destroy the world.
I'm not overly worried about humans. Right now is interesting because there are a lot of people in the world who were alive before any of this happened. But that's a very short amount of time in the grand scheme of things. Very soon, everyone on the planet will be alive only when there was a smartphone, so people will really know how to handle technology and use it.
For example, there were all the iPad leaks, which someone hacked and got everyone's pictures. But in the future, people are going to know where to put the pictures and where to not put the pictures, so the hackers can't get them. People are going to become more technology-savvy because it's just going to be a part of human nature.
DN: But won't the hackers also get better at hacking?
AE: Right now it's such a specialty thing, but once it's taught in school and it's not a specialty thing, everyone will know how to hack. Everyone will know how to use technology.
DN: What will this mean for the workforce as a whole if all educated people understand tech?
AE: I don't think there will be jobs at McDonald's anymore because McDonald's will be run by machines. There's no reason to have a human give you a burger when a machine can give you a burger that's perfect and cheaper, because you don't have to pay a human to make it. That's why the only jobs will be people making machines and programming machines.
DN: That sounds like a lot of unemployed people.
AE: I think 100 years from now, there may be an 80 percent unemployment rate. It's super scary.
