Prosecutors: DNA links man to CTA train sex abuse incident in 2012

Posted: at 6:47 pm

DNA evidence links an Oak Lawn man with a lengthy criminal history to the sexual abuse of a woman who was riding on a CTA Red Line train in 2012, Cook County prosecutors said Thursday.

Michael Robinson, 31, of the 4300 block of West 95th Place, was also charged in a similar incident with a woman on a Blue Line train last May, prosecutors charged.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Robinson held in lieu of $400,000 bail on 11 felony counts including aggravated criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery in a public place and attempted robbery.

Semen recovered from the coat and backpack of the 2012 victim matched Robinson's DNA, said Assistant State's Attorney Colleen Rogers. That victim, 28, was riding the Red Line home from nursing school in January 2012 about 7:30 p.m. when Robinson, the only other passenger in that car, boxed her in so she couldn't move. He exposed himself and sexually abused her, Rogers said. He also allegedly demanded her cellphone and cash.

The woman immediately reported the incident, and police took her coat and backpack as evidence.

Prosecutors did not say why it took so long for the Illinois State Police crime lab to complete its testing, but the lab has a backlog of DNA cases.

In the May incident, the 26-year-old woman was riding a Blue Line train at 3:30 p.m. when Robinson, again the only other passenger on the car, exposed himself and sexually abused her, Rogers said.

The woman called 911 and reported what happened, she said, and the incident was captured on a CTA surveillance camera.

Robinson was held Tuesday by CTA security after he was identified from CTA fliers, police said. He was arrested in the 500 block of South Pulaski Road.

He has eight felony convictions for attempted aggravated robbery, retail theft, burglary and possession of a controlled substance, Rogers said. He was also convicted of four misdemeanor charges including public indecency in 2010, she said.

Almost freed, DNA links inmate to five rapes

Posted: at 6:47 pm

CLEVELAND - A Cleveland man scheduled to be released from prison this week will now remain in custody after DNA testing linked him to the rapes of four adults and one teenager in the 1990s, reports CBS affiliate WOIO.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury last week indicted Dwayne Wilson, 54, on nine counts of rape and five counts of kidnapping in connection with the assaults of five women in Cleveland between 1994 and 1997.

Wilson had been scheduled to be released from prison on Friday after serving a five-year prison sentence on a separate sexual assault conviction.

The DNA tests were conducted as part of an initiative started in 2011 by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

"This case highlights exactly why I felt that we owed it to Ohioans to test the thousands of previously untested rape kits in police evidence rooms across the state," DeWine said, according to the station.

"Had these kits not been tested, this defendant would have been released from prison and given the opportunity to attack again. Now he's looking at spending the rest of his life behind bars."

In all five cases, investigators say Wilson pulled up to the females in his vehicle and sexually assaulted them at either knife or gunpoint. The alleged victims ranged in age from 16 to 34 at the time of the attacks, reports the station.

As of October 1, over 5,000 rape kits have been tested as part of DeWine's initiative. The testing has resulted in over 1,500 matches to DNA already in the Combined DNA Index System, according to the station.

In Cuyahoga County alone, more than 200 people have been indicted following testing as part of the initiative, the county prosecutor's office says.

Comedian Steve Solomons mines his Italian and Jewish heritage

Posted: at 6:45 pm

Steve Solomons theatrical one-man shows which began with My Mothers Italian, My Fathers Jewish and Im in Therapy have been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and also just for general crassness.

But Solomons naughty, but not dirty family-centered storytelling is traditionally old-school, and that may have something to do with his comic beginnings.

The person that influenced me was Jonathan Winters. He would do sound effects and I would emulate him. I worked all my life with the sound effects, says Solomon, who also was mentored early in his career by George Carlin, himself a comic known for politically incorrect humor.

Solomon brings the fourth installment in his Italian/Jewish series, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt, to Booth Playhouse beginning Tuesday, when it starts its seven-day run.

It is politically incorrect, and I think thats why people love it, says Solomon, who left a career as a high school administrator and physics teacher to pursue comedy writing. Old ladies that wear black dresses and stir sauces and gravy thats a stereotype? Thats the way I grew up! Thats every old Italian lady I knew. The older people know thats the way it was. Its not a stereotype. Im describing people I come into contact with.

He says that while his family has mostly embraced the shows, which feature 20 different recurring characters and are more akin to plays than stand-up, his daughter did once ask him to remove a joke.

She brought all of her friends to see the show when it was on Broadway, Solomon says. In the scene, shes a crazy teenager. I have a friend that says shes spoiled. And I said, No. Shes supposed to smell like that. She came backstage and said, Dad, that line has got to go.

Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt is set in his parents attic as theyre preparing to move to Florida from the Brooklyn home theyve shared for 40 years. My sister and I were going to take care of the moving, says Solomon, who discovered they hadnt bothered to pack the attic. The attic was far from empty.

And he says the humor transcends ethnicity.

In Galveston (where he played last week), there wasnt a Jew or an Italian for a thousand miles, he says. Its not just about family. Its about airports and doctors and people you come into contact with. I think that is why it works.
