Libertarian Senate Candidate discusses social, economic policy by Will Marshall | Oct 02 2014 | 10/02/14 1:52am
Libertarian Virginia Senate candidate Robert Sarvis spoke at a Students for Individual Liberty event at Clark Hall Wednesday, outlining his platform in the upcoming midterm election.
The Annandale native broke into the spotlight when he ran as a third-party candidate in last years Virginia gubernatorial election, defining his brand of libertarianism as a best of both worlds, striking a balance between what he considers the Republican and Democratic parties best policies.
Generally speaking, Sarvis said he identifies with the rights fiscal policies and the lefts social policies.
Sarvis began his political career as a GOP candidate running for state Senate, eventually dropping his Republican affiliation and taking up the Libertarian mantle.
After I ran in 2012 as a libertarian Republican, I learned that the GOP is not a good vehicle for liberty candidates, Sarvis said. They are hypocritical on economic issues and strident on social issues. I feel like the two-party system is broken. I could have run as an independant, but thats not leaving behind something that outlasts you.
Sarvis emphasized what he considers the most urgent issues libertarian candidates need to address the dwelling on the long, costly drug war, which he blames for saddling the nation with excess expenditures in the last 50 years.
Thanks to the drug war, we have millions in prison the highest incarceration rate in the world, Sarvis said. A third of those are for nonviolent crimes, which, a) costs money, and b) is wasted human potential.
Other issues topping his list of priorities included reforming certain entitlement programs and deregulating areas where he believes the free market would be a more effective solution.
Obamacare is a problem but weve also had 100 years of misregulation of the health care system by both major parties, Sarvis said.

David Gordon: The Life and Times of Murray Rothbard
Posted: at 1:41 am
Jeff Deist: This week were joined by Mises Institute Senior Fellow Dr. David Gordon, the man who Rothbard claimed knows everything about everything. Our topic is the life and times of the late Dr. Murray Rothbard. David Gordon was both his friend and associate and if you are a Rothbard fan, youll really enjoy this weeks show. We discuss Rothbards life from an insiders perspective, touching on his experience founding the Cato Institute, his relationship with Mises and the areas where they disagreed, his time with Ayn Rand and her objectivist followers and much, much more. Stay tuned.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome once again to Mises Weekends. Im Jeff Deist and Im very pleased to be joined this weekend by none other than our own David Gordon who is visiting us from Los Angeles, so hes in the studio here. Im face-to-face with him and David, thank you very much, its great to see you.
David Gordon: Great to see you too, Jeff. Thanks for inviting me.
JD: David, last weekend we spent some time with Guido Hlsmann, going inside the mind of Ludwig von Mises. This week, wed like to talk to you in a similar vein about Murray Rothbard. So tell us first and foremost about your relationship with Murray.
DG: I met Murray in 1979. Id actually read Man, Economy and State when it came out in 62 when I was in junior high and I didnt get to meet any of the major libertarians till 79. I met him in 79 when I attended a conference at the Cato Institute in Eugene, Oregon in June and he and I hit it off right away and I met also his great friends, Ronald Hamowy and Ralph Raico and right after that conference, thanks to Murrays influence, I was offered a job at the Cato Institute and I was there briefly. As you probably knew, Murray split with the Cato Institute and I went with him, but I always got along very well with Murray.
What impressed me the most about him was he had an endlessly curious mind. He was always absorbing new information and he would keep up with the latest books and of course, hes best known for his libertarianism and his work as an economist. He kept up with all sorts of subjects. He knew philosophy, history, trends in art and music, anything you wanted to talk to him about, he would have new ideas and know all the new books on it and he would be very fast in the way he talked and want you to have to keep up with him and sometimes hard to do it. Id always be on the phone with him, sometimes several times a week and I knew him for 17 years.
JD: So, did you ever spend any time in his New York apartment and did you know Joey Rothbard as well?
DG: Oh yes, well I knew Joey very well. She was very protective of Murray. They had met when they were both at Columbia. She was very, very smart, very well read. She knew American history very well.
JD: And of course, she was protective of him and then he ultimately found himself in hot water with the Ayn Rand circle over the fact that Joey was not rational enough for them in the sense that she was religious.
DG: Oh yes, yes. I remember she told me that one of the things they wanted her to do, they didnt want him to divorce her right away because she was religious, but they wanted her to listen to their stuff and they thought if she did, then she would convert to their views. Nathaniel Branden apparently had done a series of tapes on the existence of God and proofs of God and they wanted her to listen to them and she didnt do it. She said something like, why do I need to listen to these tapes? She was a quite devout Presbyterian. She kept up with that all of her life. There was a minister, I think Dr. Reed in the church in New York she thought very highly of.

Her book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," raises and addresses questions of ethical issues of race and class in medical research
By Ross French on October 20, 2014
Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, will speak at UC Riverside on Nov. 20, 2014.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. The story of a set of human cells that have been used extensively in medical research for more than six decades, the tragic history of the woman they were taken from, and the accompanying ethical issues of race and class in medical research will be discussed in a free public lecture by New York Times bestselling writer Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 in the Highlander Union Building, room 302 on the campus of the University of California, Riverside.
Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and the lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. with a question and answer session to follow. A book signing will also take place at the conclusion of the evening. Seating is limited. Free parking will be available in Parking Lot 1.
Skloots book examines the history of the first-known human immortal cell line used for medical research, called HeLa, and the woman who unknowingly provided the cells, Henrietta Lacks. It has received several awards, including the National Academies Best Book of the Year Award, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences Best Young Adult Book Award and the Heartland Prize for non-fiction.
Skloots appearance is part of the year-long lecture series hosted by The Immortality Project, which was established at UC Riverside in 2012 by Professor John Martin Fischer with a $5 million, three-year grant from the John Templeton Foundation to undertake a rigorous examination of a wide range of issues related to immortality.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is about a certain kind of immortality not as a conscious being, and not just in terms of memories and fame, but as the donor of cells that continue to multiply indefinitely, Fischer said. The book is beautifully written and raises issues about social justice and informed consent. It discusses these difficult and disturbing issues in a way that remains humane and personally compelling throughout.
I think one of the things that really makes The Immortal Life powerful for students is that the story is so personal for them, Skloot said. Everyone in the world has benefited personally from HeLa cells in some way, and theres always a point in the book when readers realize this, whether its because theyve gotten vaccines developed using HeLa cells, were conceived through in vitro fertilization, or any number of other things. Students often tell me that their mother or father is alive because their cancer was treated with a drug made using HeLa cells I look forward to being with the students at UCR and sharing with them the way the Lackses story affects us all.

Human rights still a concern in Burma, despite big-name investment
Posted: at 1:41 am
A nighttime view of the capital of Yangon. Pic: AP.
The internationally known Hilton hotel brand launched its first Burmese property inNaypyidaw last Friday. The company renovated a property owned by the Eden Group, which partnered with Hilton for brand recognition, The Irrawaddy reported. Hilton also plans to open several more properties in the country, including in Yangon, Inle Lake and Bagan.
Investment in Burma bya global hotel chain like Hilton is unsurprising, and even expected. The Irrawaddy has reportedthat several other hotel chains, including Kempinski and Accor Group, have already established properties in Burma. Its a smart business decision, considering that both tourism and international investment are growing in the country. Burma is ever more on the map, and governments and the private sector are eyeing it for potential growth.
But concerns remain that, as the country is celebrated for investment and diplomatic opportunities, its ongoing human rights abuses will be forgotten.
Asia News reported that Burmas economic growth for 2014-2015 is projected at 8.5 percent, based on certain conditions being met, including controlled inflation and improved infrastructure. However, the sitenoted, human rights activists and associations urge people to look beyond the mere economic aspect and investigate the situations of violence, abuse and exploitation before investing in the country.
With the current wave of investment, corrupt officials and business leaders stand to benefit greatly if the government does not crack down on corruption and enforce laws against shady dealings. Even if that does happen, concerns remains. The Irrawaddy hinted at Eden Group founder Chit Khaings unsavory past, writing, A US Embassy cable from 2007 described him as an up and coming crony, [who] has parlayed his regime connections to amass great wealth, while most Burmese struggle to survive.
Burmasgovernment is eager to shed its image as a perpetrator of human rights violations. Foreign MinisterWunna Maung Lwin went on record in The China Post as sayingall major concerns related to human rights havebeen addressed since the countrys move toward democracy in 2010, andspecifically referenced the violence in Rakhine state between Rohingya Muslims and Buddhists. A study by Equal Rights Trust and Mahidol UniversitysInstitute for Human Rights and Peace Studies states that the Rohingya are among the most persecuted people in the world, while Human Rights Watch has accused the Burmese government of endorsing an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya.
All is not quiet in other ethnic areas, either, where government violence has been rampantto varying degrees throughoutthe past several decades. The Irrawaddy reported that as recently as Friday, fighting broke out anewbetween rebels and the government in Shan State.
The Burmese media has also been under attack recently, with three journalistssentenced to prisonjust last week. Human Rights Watch criticized the government in June for using intimidation tactics against local media, and journalist visas are harder to come by and may be issued for shorter periods of time than they were before.
Hilton is just one of many international companies that will establish a presence in Burma in comingyears. From a business perspective, the opportunities are risky but ripe. However, it is vital that the international community continues to pressure the government to ensure that human rights are upheld. Stability in the country depends on it, and any company with a concern for its ethical corporate culture should pressure Burma to continue improving its abysmal human rights record. Otherwise, the government and corrupt fat cats are rewarded for decades of horror and oppression.

US: Post-Haiyan anti-trafficking effort key part of US-PH ties

A US-funded, two-year anti-trafficking program is lauded by Filipino government officials and is seen as a crucial part of the US' efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines United States (US) Ambassador Philip Goldberg said an anti-human trafficking crusade is a "key part" in the US' diplomatic efforts with the Philippines.
Goldberg delivered this message Monday, October 20, during the launch of a US-funded, two-year program aimed at combatting human trafficking in Haiyan-hit areas.
He added that "beyond the financial aspect," the US involves itself in the prevention of the illegal trade.
This is a global problem that requires global and local solutions and response, he said of the smuggling of human persons for forced labor and/or sexual exploitation.
The project launch was held at the Patio Victoria in Tacloban City, the city hardest hit by 2013's most powerful tropical cyclone Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda). (CLICK: Yolanda/Haiyan)
The program, initiated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), was the subject of praise by government officials for its "victim-centered approach" and focus on those "vulnerable to exploitation."
Typhoon Haiyan unleashed its fury in Eastern Visayas last November 8, 2013, washing away homes, causing deaths in the thousands, and leaving the rest scouring for food and shelter to survive.
The devastation of key Visayas cities such as Tacloban and Ormoc was made worse by subsequent reports of women and children falling prey in the hands of human traffickers.
