Scientific evidence does not support the brain game claims, Stanford scholars say

Posted: October 21, 2014 at 1:44 am

By Clifton B. Parker

Scholars say there's little scientific evidence that computer-based brain games do more than improve performance playing them.

The Stanford Center for Longevity joined today with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in issuing a statement skeptical about the effectiveness of so-called "brain game" products. Signing the document were 69 scholars, including six from Stanford and cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists from around the world.

Laura Carstensen, a Stanford psychology professor and the director of the Center for Longevity, said as baby boomers enter their golden years, commercial companies are all too often promising quick fixes for cognition problems through products that are unlikely to produce broad improvements in everyday functioning.

"It is customary for advertising to highlight the benefits and overstate potential advantages of their products," she said. "But in the case of brain games, companies also assert that the products are based on solid scientific evidence developed by cognitive scientists and neuroscientists. So we felt compelled to issue a statement directly to the public."

One problem is that while brain games may target very specific cognitive abilities, there is very little evidence that improvements transfer to more complex skills that really matter, like thinking, problem solving and planning, according to the scholars.

While it is true that the human mind is malleable throughout a lifetime, improvement on a single task like playing computer-based brain games does not imply a general, all-around and deeper improvement in cognition beyond performing better on just a particular game.

"Often, the cited research is only tangentially related to the scientific claims of the company, and to the games they sell," said Carstensen, the Fairleigh S. Dickinson, Jr. Professor in Public Policy.

Agreeing with this view were the experts who signed the Stanford-Planck consensus statement, which reads in part:

"We object to the claim that brain games offer consumers a scientifically grounded avenue to reduce or reverse cognitive decline when there is no compelling scientific evidence to date that they do. The promise of a magic bullet detracts from the best evidence to date, which is that cognitive health in old age reflects the long-term effects of healthy, engaged lifestyles."

Materials That Will Change the World Graphene

Posted: at 1:44 am

Have you heard of graphene?

This is a blog about why graphene may be the next multibillion-dollar material, holding the key to computing, healthcare and energy storage.

What is graphene?

Graphene is a pure form of carbon that is very thin, very strong and very expensive.

When I say thin, I mean VERY thin graphene is one atom thick (almost transparent).

And when I say strong, I mean VERY strong. For its very low weight, it is 100 times stronger than steel, as stiff as a diamond, and yet also flexible and even stretchable.

But its other characteristics are most interesting. It conducts heat and electricity with great efficiency (faster at room temperature than any other known material), and it charges and discharges 100x to 1000x faster than traditional batteries.

Right now, its expensive.

Nature reported in 2013 that just one micrometer-sized flake made in this [original] way can cost more than $1,000 making graphene, gram for gram, one of the most expensive materials on Earth.

However, as mass production increases, there is potential for a 70% to 80% price drop, making graphene production much more economical. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), for example, has brought the cost down to about $100,000 per square meter.

Eczema Causes, Symptoms, Treatment – Eczema Home Remedies …

Eczema (cont.) Eczema Home Remedies

Removing exacerbating factors is a good place to start. This may be as simple as changing the laundry detergent or as difficult as moving to a new climate or changing jobs.

Prevent dry skin by taking warm showers or baths. Use a mild soap or body cleanser. Prior to drying off, apply an effective emollient to wet skin. Emollients are substances that inhibit the evaporation of water. Generally, they are available in jars and have a "stiff" consistency. They do not flow and ought to leave a shine with a slightly greasy feel on the skin. Most good emollients contain petroleum jelly although certain solid vegetable shortenings do a more than creditable job.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting, rough, or scratchy clothing.

Avoid scratching the rash. If it's not possible to stop scratching, cover the area with a dressing. Wear gloves at night to minimize skin damage from scratching.

Anything that causes sweating can irritate the rash. Avoid strenuous exercise during a flare.

An anti-inflammatory topical cream may be necessary to control a flare of atopic dermatitis.

Avoid physical and mental stress. Eating right, light activity, and adequate sleep will help someone stay healthy, which can help prevent flares.

Do not expect a quick response. Atopic dermatitis is controllable but consistency in application of treatment products is necessary.

Topical BioMedics Announces "Soothe the Skin They're in," a New Program for Children Who Suffer with Eczema

Posted: at 1:44 am

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) October 20, 2014

Topical BioMedics, Inc., announces its new program to help relieve the discomfort and pain of children who suffer with eczema by sending their parents a free tube of their proprietary topical product, Topricin Junior for Children. Formulated especially for a child's sensitive kin, Topricin Junior is a natural way to help the body heal the skin as it helps relieve itching, redness, pain, and discomfort.

The statistics are staggering. According to the National Eczema Association, there are 31.6 million people in the United States who suffer with eczemaand many of them are children.

Eczema is the most common skin problem treated by pediatric dermatologists. About 65% of their young patients develop symptoms before age one, and about 90% of them before age five. Adolescents and adults can also develop this condition, and individuals who had eczema as a child may experience reoccurrences later in life.

A non-contagious inflammatory skin condition, the term eczema is derived from Greek, meaning "to boil out." The name is appropriate since to ancient medical practitioners the skin may have appeared to be "boiling."

Eczema can appear anywhere on the body or in just a few areas. Common symptoms include dry, red, itchy skin, bumps, and rashes, which can be oozing or very dry. In babies, a rash often appears on the face and scalp, but the symptoms of eczema vary from child to child, and rashes can be found on the back of the knees, bend in the elbows, trunk, wrists, hands, feet, and other parts of the body.

No matter which part of the skin is affected, eczema is usually itchy. But scratching can make the rash worse, and may eventually lead to thickened, brownish areas on the skin and/or cause an infection.

The National Eczema Association has given voice to the children who are afflicted with eczema, and the things they say can break your heart. Things like: I feel uncomfortable in the skin Im in. Eczema makes me feel left out and sad. Eczema is hard to live with. It hurts when people stare. And, the simple, poignant statement I feel bad.

Unfortunately, the primary reason that most people remain suffering with eczema is because there is an incomplete understanding of the disease and what causes it. In addition, many of the Rx medicines for eczema and other skin issues have side effects, some of which are severe.

A childs skin is more sensitive to pain than an adults skin, and they feel pain more intensely, says Lou Paradise, president and chief of research, Topical BioMedics. They are little peoplenot little adultsand adult medications may not be appropriate for them. Children need gentler, safer, effective treatments. Understanding and treating the cause of eczema, not just symptoms, is key.

Vitamin D Might Help Kids With Eczema

Posted: at 1:44 am

FRIDAY, Oct. 17, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Daily vitamin D supplements might help children with eczema that gets worse in the winter, a new study suggests.

When eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, flares up in the winter it's known as winter-related atopic dermatitis.

Researchers found vitamin D significantly reduced the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this disorder.

"While we don't know the exact proportion of patients with atopic dermatitis whose symptoms worsen in the winter, the problem is common," said study leader Dr. Carlos Camargo, of Massachusetts General Hospital's department of emergency medicine.

"In this large group of patients, who probably had low levels of vitamin D, taking daily vitamin D supplements -- which are inexpensive, safe and widely available -- proved to be quite helpful," he said in a hospital news release.

A common treatment for severe atopic dermatitis is the controlled use of ultraviolet light, which stimulates production of vitamin D in the skin, the study's authors said. In conducting their research, they explored the possibility that vitamin D deficiency -- the so-called sunshine vitamin -- could help explain why the condition often gets worse during winter.

The study, conducted with the help of scientists at the Health Sciences University of Mongolia, involved 107 Mongolian children between the ages of 2 and 17 from nine outpatient clinics in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.

All of the children had atopic dermatitis that flared up in cold weather or during the transition from fall to winter. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: those who received a 1000 IU daily dose of vitamin D and those who received a placebo.

The children's symptoms were evaluated when the study began, and one month later when it ended. The children's parents were also asked whether or not they felt their child's skin condition had improved.

The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, revealed the children who received the vitamin D supplements had an average 29 percent improvement in their symptoms. In contrast, the children who received the placebo had a 16 percent improvement.

Sanofi, Regeneron Begin Phase 3 Study For Eczema Drug Dupilumab

Posted: at 1:44 am

By RTT News, October 20, 2014, 02:16:00 AM EDT

(RTTNews.com) - Sanofi (SNY, SAN) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( REGN ) Monday announced the start of the phase 3 trial for dupilumab on patients with atopic dermatitis or eczema.

Primary objective of Liberty Ad Chronos, first trial of the phase 3 study, is to demonstrate the efficacy of the drug in adults with moderate to severe AD, when administered concomitantly with topical corticosteroids through 16 weeks, the companies said. The trial will have around 700 patients.

Secondary objective is to gauge the safety and efficacy of dupilumab up to 52 weeks.

"This Phase 3 program will evaluate if blocking IL-4 and IL-13, two key cytokines in the Th2 inflammatory pathway, may provide a potential new approach for this chronic, difficult-to-manage disease," said Donald Leung, a member of the Liberty Ad Clinical Trials Steering Committee.
