Tampa dermatologists clinical trial for sufferers of eczema ongoing
Posted: October 23, 2014 at 11:43 am
Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman continues to conduct a clinical trial for eczema and is seeking new patients to participate in what may be a one-of-a-kind, breakthrough treatment that will alleviate symptoms for those who suffer from the skin condition.
In an effort to provide an effective solution for patients, the Tampa dermatologist is administering the treatment in hopes that participants will see a noticeable improvement of their skin by the end of the trial.
I would encourage anyone who suffers from eczema to take advantage of this opportunity, says Dr. Forman. The goal of this treatment is to provide patients with positive, long-term results that will relieve irritation and itchiness and improve the appearance of their skin.
Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a skin condition characterized by irritated skin due to the release of inflammatory chemicals in the body. Common symptoms include a combination of itchy, dry and red patchy skin on areas of the body including the face, hands and neck.
Patients enrolled in the trial will receive subcutaneous (injected under the skin) medication at no cost, as well as free lab tests and exams by the Tampa dermatologist and his office. In addition, volunteers will be compensated for their participation in the research study.
Everyone should have the opportunity to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin, says Dr. Forman. My hope is that this trial will simplify the lives of those affected by atopic dermatitis.
Dr. Forman is the founder of Forman Dermatology and Skin institute, located in Tampa, Fla. and has appeared on TV shows across the country, including the nationally syndicated show The Doctors to provide sun-protection tips and to demonstrate his breakthrough skin cancer treatments.
If interested in being a part of the clinical trial for eczema, or for more on Dr. Seth Forman, Tampa dermatology or Forman Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, please visit http://www.FormanDerm.com.
About Dr. Seth Forman: Dr. Forman is a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Tampa, Florida. He was voted the Best Dermatologist in Carrollwood in 2011 and 2012 by the Carrollwood News and Tribune. In December 2011, he opened his new Tampa dermatology office, Forman Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, where he gives psoriasis sufferers access to the latest treatment options, including topical and oral medications, as well as biological and phototherapy. Dr. Forman is one of the few Tampa dermatologists to offer narrowband light therapy, which uses pharmaceutical grade light to suppress psoriasis. Hes also one of the few board-certified dermatologists in the U.S. to use the SRT-100 radiotherapy to treat basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.

Novartis International AG / Novartis announces FDA Advisory Committee unanimously recommends approval of AIN457 (secukinumab) for patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis . Processed and transmitted by NASDAQ OMX Corporate Solutions. The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement.
Biologics License Application (BLA) for secukinumab, a "first-in-class" IL-17A inhibitor, is currently under FDA review with an anticipated action date in early 2015
FDA Advisory Committee recommendation based on efficacy and safety outcomes of 10 Phase II/III clinical studies of secukinumab in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis
Affecting 7.5 million Americans, psoriasis may negatively impact daily life and is associated with increased risk for other chronic illnesses[1]-[3]
National Psoriasis Foundation survey of 5,600 patients found 52% were dissatisfied with their disease management[4]
Basel, 20 October, 2014 - Novartis announced the Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee (DODAC) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today voted unanimously to support the approval of AIN457 (secukinumab), a selective interleukin-17A (IL-17A) inhibitor, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adult patients who are candidates for systemic therapy (a drug that is absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to all parts of the body) or phototherapy (light therapy). The DODAC based its recommendation on the safety and efficacy outcomes from 10 psoriasis Phase II/III clinical studies which included nearly 4,000 patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.
"Moderate-to-severe psoriasis is a serious condition where patients suffer from skin lesions that cause itching, pain and scaling. There is a need for novel therapies as not all treatments are appropriate or effective in every patient," said Vas Narasimhan, Global Head Development, Novartis Pharmaceuticals. "Today's recommendation is based on the efficacy and safety data put forth in our robust clinical trial program and brings us one step closer to delivering an innovative, new treatment option for people suffering from moderate-to-severe psoriasis. We look forward to working with the FDA as it finalizes its review."
The Phase III clinical program for secukinumab included four placebo-controlled pivotal studies which examined secukinumab 300 mg and 150 mg in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. In these studies, secukinumab met all primary and key secondary endpoints, including Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 75 and 90 and Investigator's Global Assessment modified 2011 (IGA mod 2011) 0/1 responses, showing significant skin clearance at Week 12[5]-[7]. In addition, a majority of secukinumab-treated patients who achieved PASI 75 response and IGA mod 2011 0/1 at Week 12 maintained the response at Week 52 with continued treatment[7]. PASI measures the redness, scaling and thickness of psoriatic plaques, and the extent of involvement in each region of the body[8]. Treatment efficacy is assessed by the reduction of the score from baseline (i.e., a 75% reduction is known as PASI 75 and a 90% reduction is known as PASI 90). PASI 90 is a higher standard of skin clearance compared to PASI 75[8].
Currently available data showed no major safety issues. In the pooled analysis of the placebo-controlled period of the pivotal Phase III studies, the incidence of serious adverse events (SAEs) was low and comparable for both doses of secukinumab and placebo (2.0% for both 300 mg and 150 mg vs. 1.7% for placebo)[5]-[7]. Commonly reported adverse events (AEs) observed with secukinumab were nasopharyngitis, headache, diarrhea, pruritus (itching), and upper respiratory infection[5]-[7].
Novartis submitted a Biologics License Application (BLA) for secukinumab to the FDA in October 2013 and the FDA action date is expected in early 2015. Additionally, submissions have been made with regulatory authorities in the EU with an expected decision anticipated in late 2014 or early 2015.

Gene May Help Shield Hispanic Women From Breast Cancer, Study Says
Posted: at 11:43 am
TUESDAY, Oct. 21, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- About one-fifth of Hispanic women have a genetic variation that offers significant protection against breast cancer risk, according to a new study.
The genetic variant originates from native Americans and reduces breast cancer risk by 40 percent to 80 percent, particularly the more aggressive estrogen receptor-negative forms of the disease, researchers said.
"The effect is quite significant," study senior author Dr. Elad Ziv, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a university news release.
"If you have one copy of this variant, which is the case for approximately 20 percent of U.S. Latinas, you are about 40 percent less likely to have breast cancer. If you have two copies, which occurs in approximately 1 percent of the U.S. Latina population, the reduction in risk is on the order of 80 percent," Ziv explained.
The researchers pinpointed the genetic variant after analyzing DNA from 3,140 breast cancer patients in the United States, Mexico and Columbia, as well as from nearly 8,200 women without breast cancer in those same countries.
The team also found that women with the genetic variant have breast tissue that appears less dense on mammograms. Breast tissue that appears more dense on a mammogram is a known risk factor for breast cancer, according to the study published Oct. 20 in the journal Nature Communications.
Hispanic women are at lower risk for breast cancer than women in other ethnic groups. Lifetime risk of the disease is 13 percent for whites, 11 percent for blacks, and less than 10 percent for Hispanics, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. The risk is even lower for Hispanic women with native American ancestry.
The newly identified genetic variant is on chromosome 6, near a gene that codes for an estrogen receptor called ESR1. Further research is needed to determine how the genetic variant affects breast cancer risk, the researchers said.
"If we can use these results to better understand how this protects [against] estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer, that would be interesting and important, because right now we have no good way to prevent that type of breast cancer," Ziv said.

Get ready to spend real time with Bill Maher in Clearwater
Posted: at 11:42 am
Expect Bill Maher to come out swinging when he takes the stage at Ruth Eckerd Hall on Saturday night.
The always politically incorrect host of HBOs Real Time is likely to take on conservative Republicans, the U.S. reaction to Ebola, what he calls the do nothing Congress, whatever else is in the news, and his latest target Islam.
In a recent telephone interview, Maher said he has even more new material to unload since his live HBO comedy special in September.
The last time he performed to a sold-out Ruth Eckerd Hall audience, the 2012 Republican Convention had just wrapped up in Tampa. I guess Im not doing my job because they are still around, he joked.
Maher, 58, has a loyal following and has garnered 32 Emmy nominations for his hit TV shows and specials. Mahers first creation, the late-night talk show Politically Incorrect (Comedy Central, ABC), ran from 1993 to 2002. Real Time has been on 12 years.
Conservatives have always been a target for Maher, a self-proclaimed proud liberal who goes back and forth from the serious to the funny. But in recent weeks he has made news by taking on other liberals over his views on the Muslim religion.
In a clash with actor Ben Affleck on his Real Time show, Maher said that to claim that Islam is like other religions was just nave and plain wrong, pointing to a recent New York Times article that 19 people have been beheaded in Saudi Arabia since August, with most being for non-violent crimes, including homosexuality.
Affleck, and others since that show, have accused Maher of being a bigot for painting all Muslims with the same broad, negative brush.
I think weve started a national debate over what are some of the non-liberal beliefs held by this religion, Maher responded during the interview. Ive never said all Muslims believe the same thing, but many, many throughout the world support treating women as second-class citizens, and that its all right to kill those who leave the faith.
All religions are strange in some ways, but Islam is the most dangerous and violent right now, he adds, noting that the terrorist group Isis is labeled as extreme but a high court in Pakistan recently upheld the death sentence for a woman whose crime was something derogatory against the prophet Muhammad.

Censorship in America: What is Censorship?
Posted: at 11:42 am
Censorship is suppression of speech or other communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. Rationale The rationale for censorship is different for various types of information censored: Moral censorship is the removal of materials that are obscene or otherwise considered morally questionable. Pornography, for example, is often censored under this rationale, especially child pornography, which is illegal and censored in many jurisdictions in the world. Military censorship is the process of keeping military intelligence and tactics confidential and away from the enemy. This is used to counter espionage, which is the process of gleaning military information. Very often, militaries will also attempt to suppress politically inconvenient information even if that information has no actual intelligence or combat-tactical value. Political censorship occurs when governments hold back information from their citizens. This is often done to exert control over the populace and prevent free expression that might foment rebellion. Religious censorship is the means by which any material considered objectionable by a certain faith is removed. This often involves a dominant religion forcing limitations on less prevalent ones. Alternatively, one religion may shun the works of another when they believe the content is not appropriate for their faith. Corporate censorship is the process by which editors in corporate media outlets intervene to disrupt the publishing of information that portrays their business or business partners in a negative light, or intervene to prevent alternate offers from reaching public exposure. Political Strict censorship existed in the Eastern Bloc. Throughout the bloc, the various ministries of culture held a tight rein on their writers. Cultural products there reflected the propaganda needs of the state. Party-approved censors exercised strict control in the early years. In the Stalinist period, even the weather forecasts were changed if they had the temerity to suggest that the sun might not shine on May Day. Under Nicolae Ceauescu in Romania, weather reports were doctored so that the temperatures were not seen to rise above or fall below the levels which dictated that work must stop.
Independent journalism did not exist in the Soviet Union until Mikhail Gorbachev became its leader; all reporting was directed by the Communist Party or related organizations. Pravda, the predominant newspaper in the Soviet Union, had a monopoly. Foreign newspapers were available only if they were published by Communist Parties sympathetic to the Soviet Union.
Possession and use of copying machines was tightly controlled in order to hinder production and distribution of samizdat, illegal self-published books and magazines. Possession of even a single samizdat manuscript such as a book by Andrei Sinyavsky was a serious crime which might involve a visit from the KGB. Another outlet for works which did not find favor with the authorities was publishing abroad.
The People's Republic of China, which continues Communist rule in politics, if not in the controlled economy, employs some 30,000 'Internet police' to monitor the internet and popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo.
Iraq under Baathist Saddam Hussein had much the same techniques of press censorship as did Romania under Nicolae Ceauescu but with greater potential violence.
Critics of the Campaign finance reform in the United States claim that this reform imposes widespread restrictions on political speech.
During World War I letters written by British soldiers would have to go through censorship. This consisted of officers going through letters with a black marker and crossing out anything which might compromise operational secrecy before the letter was sent. The World War II catchphrase "Loose lips sink ships" was used as a common justification to exercise official wartime censorship and encourage individual restraint when sharing potentially sensitive information.
An example of "sanitization" policies comes from the USSR under Joseph Stalin, where publicly used photographs were often altered to remove people whom Stalin had condemned to execution. Though past photographs may have been remembered or kept, this deliberate and systematic alteration to all of history in the public mind is seen as one of the central themes of Stalinism and totalitarianism.
Censorship is occasionally carried out to aid authorities or to protect an individual, as with some kidnappings when attention and media coverage of the victim can sometimes be seen as unhelpful.
In the context of secondary school education, the way facts and history are presented greatly influences the interpretation of contemporary thought, opinion and socialization. One argument for censoring the type of information disseminated is based on the inappropriate quality of such material for the young. The use of the "inappropriate" distinction is in itself controversial, as it changed heavily. A Ballantine Books version of the book Fahrenheit 451 which is the version used by most school classes contained approximately 75 separate edits, omissions, and changes from the original Bradbury manuscript.
