DNA evidence matches sample obtained from Anwar's sodomy accuser's clothing

Publication Date : 03-11-2014
The DNA evidence procured from the three items from Anwar Ibrahims cell matches the sample obtained from Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's clothing, the prosecution submitted.
Lead prosecutorMuhammad Shafee Abdullah told the Federal Court that chemist Dr Nor Aidora Saedon had analysed the DNA samples obtained from the Good morning towel, mineral water bottle and toothbrush taken from the cell occupied by the opposition leader and found that it matched the Male Y DNA profile found on Mohd Saifuls underwear.
The prosecution had earlier resumed submissions on the fifth day of Anwars appeal against a sodomy conviction.
Shafee had challenged the defences failure to cross-examine the police over the recovery of the towel, mineral water bottle and toothbrush.
He had said that there was no issue of conspiracy as the police officers merely testified as to what they had seen with regard to those three items and did not add more stories to implicate Anwar.
The lawyer had further argued that illegally obtained exhibits were still admissible as evidence.

Plants: Breaking down DNA by genome
Posted: at 2:44 pm
New DNA sequencing technologies have greatly advanced genomic and metagenomic studies in plant biology. Scientists can readily obtain extensive genetic information for any plant species of interest, at a relatively low cost, rapidly accelerating the pace of genome sequencing.
However, since plant tissues harbor three separate genomes (nuclear, chloroplast, and mitochondrial), it can often be challenging to isolate the particular genome of interest from extracted DNA samples. Sequencing DNA containing all three genomes therefore results in a considerable amount of wasted data, for example, if only the chloroplast genome is desired for the study.
Methods exist to isolate particular genomic regions, but each of these has drawbacks. For example, some protocols require extensive lab work, while others (e.g., long-range PCR and hybrid enrichment) require prior knowledge of the genomic regions of interest.
A new method by researchers from New England Biolabs and New Mexico State University provides plant biologists with a quick and simple approach for separating plant nuclear DNA from organellar DNA for genomic and metagenomic studies. The approach, published in the November issue of Applications in Plant Sciences, targets the methyl-CpG-binding domain, following a similar method applied for genomic studies of humans.
The method relies on differences in CpG methylation between nuclear and organellar (i.e., chloroplast and mitochondrial) genomes in plants. Compared to the nuclear genome, the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes essentially lack CpG methylation (i.e., the addition of methyl groups to sites in the genome where cytosine and guanine occur side by side).
Given these different methylation patterns, the researchers used specialized magnetic beads that hybridize with methyl-CpG-rich DNA regions in an attempt to separate nuclear DNA from organellar DNA in total genomic DNA samples. They then sequenced the methyl-enriched portion and the methyl-depleted portion separately. They found that the methyl-enriched sample contained a considerable increase in concentration of nuclear DNA, while the methyl-depleted sample contained an increased concentration of organellar DNA.
Dr. Donovan Bailey, senior author of the study and professor at New Mexico State University, said this approach has several advantages over previously established methods for enriching either nuclear or organellar DNA for genome sequencing.
"Our primary perceived benefit includes the development of a means of partitioning DNA by genomic origin when one has no prior knowledge of the genomes being studied, other than the domain of origin -- nuclear, organellar, or prokaryote. Furthermore, not requiring extensive starting material and the speed are benefits relative to some methods."
According to Bailey, this approach can also be used to target genomes of endophytes (i.e., fungi that live in plants) and prokaryotic parasites in plant DNA samples. Endophyte genomes undergo CpG methylation, while prokaryotic genomes do not, making it easy to sequence either of these along with the particular plant genome(s) of interest. This will provide researchers with greater insight on the diversity of other eukaryotes and prokaryotes living inside plant tissues.
Although this study focused on flowering plants, Bailey said the approach will likely work well across other major plant groups (e.g., ferns, gymnosperms).

Why We Need More Women In Technology
Posted: at 2:44 pm
We need more women in technology. In 2012, women made up only 26 percent of the computing workforce, out of 3,816,000 computing-related occupations. (Department of Labor Current Population Survey, 2012)
In the same year, only 18 percent of computer science majors were women.
Women hold only 11 percent of executive technical roles at privately held, venture-backed companies. (Dow Jones VentureSource, 2012)
Only 7 percent of venture capital goes to women-owned businesses, and of those venture capitalists investing in startups, only 4.2 percent are women.
These and other telling statistics are indicative of a huge problem!
Its time for a shift
I have had the extraordinary privilege of working with some of the most inspiring, ambitious female leaders of our time.
I want to devote this blog to them.
Women are primed to lead in this new era of innovation.
Im proud that each years Singularity University Graduate program has some 40 percent women attendees.

U.S. Gene Patents: Patient Care Stymied In Canada, Hospital Claims
Posted: at 2:43 pm
An Ottawa hospital is challenging the legality of gene patents that hamper the ability of doctors to freely screen for potentially deadly genetic diseases without fear of being sued forpatent violations.
On Monday, the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) started a legal process in Federal Court that could decide if human genes can be patented in Canada.
"Its about whether Canadian hospitals can provide genetic testing to Canadian patients and really give them the top quality of care," said Richard Gold, a lawyer and intellectual property expert at McGill University in Montreal, who is advising the hospital pro bono.
Currently, some genetic tests cant be done in Canada because U.S. companies hold patents on the tests and the genes and have threatened legal action if the patents are violated by doing the tests in Canada, rather than the U.S.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that naturallyoccurring human genes cant be patented and threw out patents held by Myriad Genetics Inc. to look for mutations on the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes associated with much greater risks of breast and ovarian cancer, including a mutation that actorAngelina Jolie revealed she inherited.
CHEOs case centres on patents for genes associated with long QT syndrome, an inherited heart rhythm disorder that typically presents for the first time as a fainting spell or seizure during exercise or tragically in sudden death, said Gail Graham, head of medicine genetics at the Ottawa hospital.
"Genetic technology is just exploding. It's increasingly embedding itself at the heart of medicine," Graham said.
Long QT syndrome is treatable, but it often results in sudden death of a young person. With genetic screening, doctors aim to treat it before tragedy strikes.
The hospital is not allowed to screen for genes associatedwith long QT syndrome because a U.S. company has patented the test and the genes.
