Weird Life

Posted: at 12:43 am

A genome taken from a 36,000-year-old skeleton has helped scientists shed new light on interbreeding between humans and Neanderthals.

The ground-breaking study of DNA recovered from a fossil of one of the earliest known Europeans - a man who lived in western Russia - shows that the genetics of the earliest inhabitants of the continent survived the last ice age, helping form the basis of the modern-day population.

Known as the Kostenki genome, the DNA also contained evidence the man shared, as with all people of Eurasia today, a small percentage of Neanderthal genes, confirming previous findings which show a period when Neanderthals and the first humans to leave Africa for Europe briefly interbred.

This means that, even today, anyone with a Eurasian ancestry - from Chinese to Scandinavian and North American - has a small element of Neanderthal DNA.

But despite Western Eurasians going on to share the European landmass with Neanderthals for another 10,000 years, no further periods of interbreeding occurred, the study said.

Robert Foley, a University of Cambridge professor, said: "Were Neanderthal populations dwindling very fast?

"Did modern humans still encounter them?

"We were originally surprised to discover there had been interbreeding.

"Now the question is, why so little?

"It's an extraordinary finding that we don't understand yet."

'Longevity Gene' One Key to Long Life, Research Suggests

Posted: at 12:42 am

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Nov. 6, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Even among people who live well into their 90s, those with a particular gene variant may survive the longest, a new study finds.

The variant is in a gene known as CETP, and researchers have known for more than a decade that people who carry it have a better shot at an exceptionally long life -- past 95 or even 100.

CETP is involved in cholesterol metabolism, and the longevity-linked variant raises blood levels of HDL cholesterol (the "good" kind) and promotes larger-than-normal HDL particles, researchers say.

The new findings show that even when you look at people who've already lived beyond age 95, those with the "favorable" CETP variant survive longer, said Dr. Sofiya Milman, an assistant professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

Milman was scheduled to present the findings Thursday at the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Washington, D.C. Data and conclusions presented at meetings are usually considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

The results build on work that began at Einstein in the late 1990s. Researchers there have been studying centenarians in and around New York City, all of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. They've found that people in this long-lived group often carry the CETP variant, and have very high HDL levels.

"They don't only live longer, they live healthier, too," Milman said.

Research has linked the CETP variant to lower-than-average rates of heart disease and stroke, as well as sharper mental function in old age, Milman noted. But she said the gene could have other, yet unknown roles in aging, too.

These latest results are based on more than 400 people from the Einstein project. They were typically 97 years old when they entered the study, and were followed anywhere from one to 11 years, Milman said.

Neighbors step in after fatal South Hill shooting

Posted: at 12:42 am

SPOKANE, Wash. -

"I said the ambulance needs to get here now, his lungs are filling up with blood," says MistyDawn Aff, remembering her neighbor gasping for breath after being shot a number of times in the upper body.

The shooting took place at the corner of S. Elm and 10th Ave just after midnight on Saturday. Aff says before the gunshots rang out, she heard two men, one of them her neighbor, arguing out on the street.

"He was screaming and calling my neighbor some very politically incorrect words," says Aff.

Shortly after, five to six gunshots were heard, and Aff, without hesitation, ran outside. Lying on the street, she saw her neighbor, whose name has been withheld pending police confirmation. She began checking the victim for wounds and found two, one in his side and one in his chest. She immediately began putting pressure on the chest wound, while her family followed her lead and began helping.

"My fiance grabbed a blanket or towel to put on the side wound, and my mom was just talking to him, giving him something to focus on, keep him calm" says Aff.

Neither Aff nor her fiance and mother have any medical training, but they did what they could to help their neighbor before the ambulance arrived.

"We kept him propped on his side, that's all we could do," says Aff. "Keep him talking, keep him calm."

The victim later died from his wounds, Aff and others are left wondering what led up to the shooting. A woman who had been with the victim, whom Aff identified as the victim's girlfriend said she thought they'd been followed back from a bar. The two had been out celebrating the fact that they were expecting a baby.

"I don't know why anyone would do this to him, he was a great guy," says Aff.
