DNA project to link people who share the same Staffordshire…

Posted: at 3:43 am

Society chairman Ian Bloor looks through a family tree.

FAMILY historians are appealing for volunteers to join a DNA project aimed at linking the genealogical trees of people who share the same Staffordshire surname.

The Blo(o)r(e) Society has already arranged for 27 men to be tested to see if their genetic signatures are a match. It has discovered at least three of them are related.

Now society members hope more people linked to the various spellings of the Bloor name will undergo the simple swab test to shed further light on hundreds of years of history.

Chairman Ian Bloor said: "We have 106 separate trees at the moment. But if we can get the DNA samples, we might be able to go down to 18 or 20 trees.

"There are people who may have no idea they are related. It's a tremendously useful way of digging further back."

The family trees covered by the initial DNA work have connections to Newcastle, Keele, Burslem, Trentham, Ipstones and Nantwich.

Ian, who lives in Audlem, was the first to have his genetic make-up mapped, although he has yet to find a match. The results were sent off to a specialist company in the U.S. for analysis.

It is the latest project to grow out of the work of the one-name study group, which Ian and his wife Celia founded two decades ago.

There are now 140 regular members from as far afield as North America and Australia. But many are based in North Staffordshire, where the surname is thought to have originated.

How DNA Is Reshaping How We See Ourselvesand Our History

Posted: at 3:43 am

In her early 20s, Christine Kenneally discovered something about her Australian forebears that upended her sense of identity and family history. In her new book, The Invisible History of the Human Race: How DNA and History Shape Our Identities and Our Futures, she explores the power of DNA to reveal secrets in our past and predict our future.

Talking from her home in New York, she explains how even the moistness of our earwax is encoded in our genes, why our decisions are not entirely our own, and how the genetic imprint of distant historical events like slavery can shape attitudes today.

The book begins with you flying to Australia, about to discover a long-kept family secret. Tell us about the Kenneallys.

I kept circling around this memory from when I was in grade two, about eight years old. Our teacher explained what a family tree was. I was completely bewitched by this idea. I thought it was magical that you could see these lines through your familywho came from whom.

So I ran home excitedly to ask my parents what the names of my grandparents were. I was really surprised by their response. They were not happy about it. In fact, they were kind of indignant. Their attitude was: What business is it of your teacher to ask these sort of things?

Many years later, when I was in my early 20s, we were having a conversation around the kitchen table, and my father told us that the person we thought of as our grandfather was really his grandfather. And that the woman he'd grown up thinking was his sister was really his mother. And that he didn't know who his father was.

It was an incredibly significant moment in our lives. Not for the reasons I think my father feared. He came from a generation when illegitimacy was a terribly shameful thing. But this was the late 20th century. We didn't have any of those feelings. But we did feel this shuddering in our identity. The thing we'd always thought was true was not true. That's what connected with me with these questions I had about how our identities are builtwhat gets passed down to us over the years. And what can you ever really know?

You write that "the question that came to concern me, and that lies at the heart of this book, is how many decisions and how much of our self-knowledge are ultimately path dependent." Unpack that idea for us.

We have this vision of ourselves as completely in control of who we are in any one moment, as essentially creating ourselvesat least once we've become adults.

But there are many traits we have and many decisions we come to that are shaped by paths we've taken in our lives and by paths our ancestors have taken.

Synthetic biologist aims to create pig with human lungs

Posted: at 3:43 am

By Lisa M. Krieger lkrieger@mercurynews.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- In a provocative cross-species experiment, scientists are striving to rewrite the pig genome so the animal grows lungs that could be transplanted into humans.

"We are re-engineering the pig, changing its genetic code," said genome pioneer Craig Venter at SynBioBeta 2014, an annual synthetic biology conference in San Francisco. "If we succeed with rewriting the pig genome, we will have replacement organs for those who need them," he said Friday.

His team at Synthetic Genomics is designing the project, he said, creating on computers the code needed to build the hybrid. By changing as few as five genes, they have created lungs that survived for a year in baboons, he said.

In other major news at the conference, Google confirmed that Stanford University bioengineer Drew Endy has joined its team at the secretive Google X, which created such projects as Google Glass, driverless cars and high-altitude Wi-Fi balloons.

The hiring of Endy, brought to Stanford's School of Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, suggests that Google seeks to explore the design and construction of made-to-order organisms.

Led by scientists like Venter and Endy, the once-fledgling field of synthetic biology has surged in commercial interest, according to SynBioBeta founder John Cumbers. Synthetic biology companies raised more than $500 million in 2014, and at least 20 startups were launched.

Venter is a La Jolla-based entrepreneur and molecular biologist who gained fame in a historic race with government scientists to decode the human genome.

In the Mojave Desert, he is testing a device that he says can help find extraterrestrial life on Mars by detecting and decoding its DNA -- then fax back the code.

The downloaded data could be used to reconstruct the alien organism in bio-secure labs, he said.
