Lincoln 'confident'; will rates stay flat?
Posted: November 25, 2014 at 3:47 pm
Shares of Lincoln National Corp., the Radnor-based insurance and investments company that owns naming rights for the Eagles stadium, are trading above $59 for the first time in six years, and Lincoln CEO Dennis Glass and his managers are "confident of their prospects" for yearly profit growth of 8-10%, Robert Glasspiegel, analyst at Janney Capital Markets in Philadelphia, tells clients in a report today.
Glasspiegel notes some concerns (in addition to interest-rate and stock-market risk): Lincoln has cut way back on its old policy of reinsuring its life insurance, and is holding a lot more of the risk on the books, Glasspiegel notes. He points out that Swiss Re and other European insurers have said they are worried customers are living longer than expected, so they are having to pay some annuities longer than expected. He's watching to see "if this is just a European insurer problem" or whether American firms like Lincoln will have to change their assumptions, too.
Glasspiegel also says Lincoln is investing more money (6%-12% of its new investments) into high-yield junk bonds. He questions "if this is a good time to be re-risking in light of where yields, spreads and valuations are today."

Eczema cases rising among U.S. children
Posted: at 3:47 pm
By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter
MONDAY, Nov. 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A growing number of children are being diagnosed with the allergic skin condition eczema -- but it can usually be eased with topical treatments, according to a new report.
Eczema is a chronic condition that usually starts in childhood, and causes patches of skin to become dry, inflamed and often intensely itchy.
And, studies have shown, eczema seems to be on the rise.
Based on a household survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of eczema among kids younger than 18 rose between 2000 and 2010: from around 9 percent to 17 percent among black children; from 5 percent to 10 percent among Hispanic kids; and from around 8 percent to almost 13 percent among white children.
"We don't know for certain why that is," said Dr. Anna Bruckner, one of the authors of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) report.
Greater awareness of eczema and higher rates of diagnosis are likely part of it, according to Bruckner, who directs pediatric dermatology at Children's Hospital Colorado.
"But the incidence of the [eczema] is probably increasing, too," she said.
The AAP detailed the best ways to manage atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema, in a report released online Nov. 24 in the journal Pediatrics.
The treatments described in the AAP report are not new, Bruckner said. But since so many kids have eczema -- and there are so few pediatric dermatologists -- all pediatricians need to be up to speed on the skin condition, according to Bruckner.

Eczema's effects can be bone-deep

Study finds tie between eczema, bone injury
A new study out this month suggests that people with the itchy skin condition eczema are more likely to suffer broken bones and other joint and bone injuries.
Researchers studied a nationally representative sample of 34,500 adults ages 18 to 85 of whom about 7 percent had eczema. They found that people with eczema were about 44 percent more likely to have had an injury and that 67 percent were more likely to have a bone or joint injury serious enough to limit physical activity than were those without the ailment. Other skin problems were not associated with an increased risk. The study appeared in JAMA Dermatology.
The studys authors noted that that chronic inflammation is associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk. Also, steroid medications, often used for eczema, can weaken bones.

New recommendations for treating kids with eczema
Posted: at 3:47 pm
Ava Rosado, only 4 years old, has been dealing with itchy, painful eczema all her life.
"It feels like you need to scratch it," she told CBS News.
Her mother, Deanna Rosado, says she constantly tells her daughter not to scratch the eczema. "Rub, rub, rub," she tells her daughter. "Because if you scratch, you break the skin. She gets infections," she told CBS News.
It's estimated about 10 percent of children in the U.S. suffer from eczema, an uncomfortable, inflammatory skin condition that is often difficult to treat. Now, the American Academy of Pediatrics has released new recommendations for doctors when treating the youngest of patients. It says doctors should also give parents an "action plan" to help them manage their child's condition.

Skin comes in different colors and types, but these 9 conditions give folks rarer flesh than most
Dr. Nanette Silverberg, a dermatologist at Kravis Children's Hospital at Mount Sinai in New York City told CBS News she advises parents first how to use moisturizers for eczema, which are sometimes enough to keep skin healthy.
Typically, she also prescribes a steroid cream to apply to skin when a patient has a flare-up. She says the treatment is safe for children. "They certainly have not been associated with major side effects," she said.
The AAP report also recommends bathing every two or three days with a gentle cleanser. Skin should be patted dry but left damp and moisturizer applied immediately. Parents should monitor flare-ups because children with eczema are more prone to staph infections compared with kids who do not have the skin condition. Sometimes Rosado also gives her daughter an antihistamine before bed to help her fall asleep.
Ava says the treatments have helped prevent her skin from feeling itchy. "When they put the medicine on, it feels better," she said.
