The family of Jason Rezaian, The Washington Posts Tehran bureau chief, issued a statement Sunday in response to the decision by the Iranian court to bring unspecified charges against him. Rezaian has been in detention since July 22. His wife Yeganeh Salehi, who was arrested with him, was released on bail in October. The statement is as follows:

FAMILY OF WASHINGTON POST REPORTER JASON REZAIAN RESPONDS TO CHARGES AGAINST HIM BY IRANIAN GOVERNMENT

Our family is deeply saddened to confirm that, after being held in solitary confinement without charge for 137 days, Jason Rezaian was charged with unknown crimes by the government of Iran.

In its ongoing disregard of Irans own laws, the Iranian judiciary has continued to deny Jason access to legal representation, denied his request for bail, and prevented access to review of his case file.

This continued disrespect for Irans judicial system should be a concern not only to the international community who are eagerly awaiting normalization of relations with Iran, but also to all those Iranians who claim that Iran is a country of laws which should be recognized as such by major world powers.

We urge Irans Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to show the international community that Iran is indeed a country that respects its laws, and order the immediate and unconditional release of Jason and Yeganeh and end what Irans own Head of the Judiciarys Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani, recently described as a fiasco.

Prior to taking office in 2007, Lt. Governor Roberts spent over a decade as one of Rhode Island's most respected advocates for quality, affordable health care for families and small businesses and earned a statewide reputation for being a tireless leader on health and medical issues.

While serving in the Senate, Roberts was an acknowledged leader on healthcare reform issues. She is credited with creating the Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner, an important mechanism for controlling health insurance costs and expanding primary care in Rhode Island. She championed legislation to protect the safety of residents in nursing homes. Then-Senator Roberts also led the effort to reform the corporate board structure at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island, providing for more transparency and public accountability. As Lt. Roberts has a degree from Brown University in Human Biology and an MBA in Health Care Management from Boston University.

TEHRAN, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- After being detained over the summer, a reporter for the Washington Post was charged by an Iranian court Saturday.

Jason Rezaian, an Iranian American with dual citizenship, spent around 10 hours in a court in Tehran before charges were filed against him, though the nature of the charges remain unclear. A translator assisted Rezaian, who does not speak Farsi, and sources familiar with the case told the Washington Post Rezaian signed documents indicating he understood he was being charged.

Rezaian has been an Iran-based journalist since 2008, and in 2012 be became the Washington Post's correspondent in the country. He was arrested on July 22, 2014 with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, and another photojournalist. The detention came a day after Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance renewed Rezaian's press credentials. Also a journalist, Salehi was released on bail in October.

Before Saturday, Rezaian was held for over four months without being officially charged. This measure, allowed under Iranian law, was compounded by the court's refusal to allow Rezaian to meet with an attorney.

"If authorities had evidence that Rezaian had committed a real crime, they should have charged him shortly after his arrest," Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director for Human Rights Watch, said.

U.S. State Department officials brought up the subject of Rezaian and other Americans imprisoned in Iran during November negotiations in Vienna dealing with Iran's nuclear program and related sanctions.

Last month Iranian officials hinted that Revaian may be released soon, but earlier this week sources including Revaian's family said the Iranian government extended his detention another 60 days due to ongoing investigation.

Washington Post journalist charged by court in Tehran

The Bihar government on Saturday removed Superintendent of Police of state Human Rights Commission, Amitabh Kumar Das, who had alleged links between Union minister of state Giriraj Singh and the outlawed Ranveer Sena, from the post.

Das has been transferred from the Human Rights Commission and made SP cum Assistant Citizens Security Commissioner, according to a notification issued by Home department here.S M Vakil Ahmad will take place of Das in the Bihar Human Rights Commission, the notification said.

The Rights Commission had on November 10 served a show cause to Das for writing to the Special Branch of state police alleging links between Union minister of state Giriraj Singh and the outlawed Ranveer Sena.The letter written by Das to Special Branch Inspector General (IG) J S Gangwar, and marked to BHRC Chairman and two members, alleged "sweet relations" between Singh, who is a Lok Sabha member from Nawada, and the outlawed Ranveer Sena, a private militia of upper castes landlords which allegedly committed several massacres in Bihar between 1996-2000.

The SP letter had come on November 10 when Giriraj Singh was made Union minister of state for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).The BHRC had swung into action and asked Das for clarification and for using the letterhead and the logo of the Commission, as well as, giving the impression that his opinion was Commission's opinion.BJP had taken strong exception to the event.

Reacting strongly to Das letter against Giriraj Singh, former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi had sought suspension of the IPS officer.Claiming that Das had a controversial track record, the senior BJP leader said the officer exceeded his jurisdiction by writing a letter to the IG (Special Branch) J S Gangwar for intimation to Intelligence Bureau (IB) about newly-appointed union minister's alleged links with the outlawed Ranvir Sena.
