DNA of murder accused found on cigarette BANKER'S MURDER: Saliva sample found to be a match, says Chemistry Dept Crime …

13 June 2014| last updated at 12:02AM
Chemistry Department's Crime DNA Unit head, Dr Seah Lay Hong, told the High Court that DNA testing on four cigarette butts collected from the Kuan Yin Temple parking lot matched Koong's DNA profile.
During examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor T. Deepa Nair yesterday, Dr Seah said saliva samples from the smoker's mouth found on the cigarette was extracted for DNA testing.
Koong, 45, is on trial for murdering Hussain, 75, as well as for attempted murder of his wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, 50, a managing consultant, at the Kuan Yin Temple parking lot at No. 4, Lorong Ceylon, Dang Wangi, here, between 1.30pm and 2pm, on July 29, last year.
The 13th prosecution witness said Koong's DNA male profile was found from among four cigarette butt samples sent by the police to the Chemistry Department on Aug 1 last year.
Acting Deputy Superintendent Zuraimi Zam Zam, attached with the Forensic Laboratory Division (D10) of the Kuala Lumpur Police headquarters, testified that he and seven officers found the cigarette butts at food stalls within the temple compound.
Zuraimi said after they arrived at the temple parking lot about 3.15pm on July 29 last year, they gathered the cigarette butts from stalls about 10m from Hussain's body and 6m from the main temple building.
He said after being wrapped and sealed, the cigarette butts were handed over to Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent R. Ananthan that same day.
He said they also collected three bullets from under Hussain's body and seven bullet casings scattered near the body. The evidence was given to Ananthan the same day.
He said the deceased's body was initially covered by black plastic before he pulled it off, revealing the corpse sprawled on the ground, drenched in blood.

Appeal for DNA samples to solve grisly murder of Scots artist

Borders-based Valerie Graves had significant head and facial injuries when she was discovered in the ground-floor bedroom of a waterside house in Bosham, on the English south coast.
She was killed while she house-sat for friends in the coastal village that was featured in an episode of the ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders.
Ms Graves, 55, had moved from Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders, to the West Sussex village just two months previously to care for her 87-year-old mother.
Now police have returned to the area of the killing in their latest attempt to find any evidence that might lead them to what happened.
She was house-sitting with her sister Jan, mother Eileen and her sister's partner, Nigel Acres in a home in Smugglers Lane while the owners of the 1.6m property were spending Christmas in Costa Rica.
Ms Graves had been repeatedly hit on the head and face with the hammer. She was discovered by her sister.
Police were yesterday in Smugglers Lane and nearby Bosham Lane to give residents and visitors the chance to pass on any information that might lead to a breakthrough. They were due to be in the area again from 10am today.
They have asked all men who visit, work or live in the area to voluntarily attend DNA screening sessions.
Officers handed out leaflets and put up posters asking "all men aged over 17 who live, work or visit Bosham to help police find Valerie's killer by providing a simple DNA mouth swab and thumbprint" to "enable police to eliminate as many men as possible from the inquiry".
The drop-in sessions will take place at the Millstream Hotel in Bosham between January 21 and 29, February 2 and 7, and February 10 and 15, police said.

Machine Intelligence Cracks Genetic Controls

Every recipe has both instructions and ingredients. So does the human genome. An error in the instructions can raise the risk for disease.
Every cell in your body reads the same genome, the DNA-encoded instruction set that builds proteins. But your cells couldnt be more different. Neurons send electrical messages, liver cells break down chemicals, muscle cells move the body. How do cells employ the same basic set of genetic instructions to carry out their own specialized tasks? The answer lies in a complex, multilayered system that controls how proteins are made.
Frey compares the genome to a recipe that a baker might use. All recipes include a list of ingredientsflour, eggs and butter, sayalong with instructions for what to do with those ingredients. Inside a cell, the ingredients are the parts of the genome that code for proteins; surrounding them are the genomes instructions for how to combine those ingredients.
Just as flour, eggs and butter can be transformed into hundreds of different baked goods, genetic components can be assembled into many different configurations. This process is called alternative splicing, and its how cells create such variety out of a single genetic code. Frey and his colleagues used a sophisticated form of machine learning to identify mutations in this instruction set and to predict what effects those mutations have.
Olena Shmahalo/Quanta Magazine
The researchers have already identified possible risk genes for autism and are working on a system to predict whether mutations in cancer-linked genes are harmful. I hope this paper will have a big impact on the field of human genetics by providing a tool that geneticists can use to identify variants of interest, said Chris Burge, a computational biologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was not involved in the study.
But the real significance of the research may come from the new tools it provides for exploring vast sections of DNA that have been very difficult to interpret until now. Many human genetics studies have sequenced only the small part of the genome that produces proteins. This makes an argument that the sequence of the whole genome is important too, said Tom Cooper, a biologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
The splicing code is just one part of the noncoding genome, the area that does not produce proteins. But its a very important one. Approximately 90 percent of genes undergo alternative splicing, and scientists estimate that variations in the splicing code make up anywhere between 10 and 50 percent of all disease-linked mutations. When you have mutations in the regulatory code, things can go very wrong, Frey said.
People have historically focused on mutations in the protein-coding regions, to some degree because they have a much better handle on what these mutations do, said Mark Gerstein, a bioinformatician at Yale University, who was not involved in the study. As we gain a better understanding of [the DNA sequences] outside of the protein-coding regions, well get a better sense of how important they are in terms of disease.
Scientists have made some headway into understanding how the cell chooses a particular protein configuration, but much of the code that governs this process has remained an enigma. Freys team was able to decipher some of these regulatory regions in a paper published in 2010, identifying a rough code within the mouse genome that regulates splicing. Over the past four years, the quality of genetics dataparticularly human datahas improved dramatically, and machine-learning techniques have become much more sophisticated, enabling Frey and his collaborators to predict how splicing is affected by specific mutations at many sites across the human genome. Genome-wide data sets are finally able to enable predictions like this, said Manolis Kellis, a computational biologist at MIT who was not involved in the study.

Global Animal Health Market 2014 Report Available Online By MarketResearchReports.Biz
Posted: at 4:42 pm
Albany, NY (PRWEB) December 29, 2014
The 2014 edition of the animal health market report is based on the premise that animals suffer from an increasing number of diseases, just as human beings do; it is imperative that they receive timely and proper care from not just qualified veterinarians, but also from pet owners and farmers/livestock herders.
View Full report at http://www.marketresearchreports.biz/analysis/234394
The report segments the animal health market based on species: food producing animals and companion animals. The former refers to animals that provide meat and dairy, namely, swine, sheep, bovines, poultry, and fish. On the other hand, companion animals include species such as cats, dogs, fish, horses and others that are kept as pets by people. The report observes that the animal health industry strives to introduce products and medicines that are geared toward helping animals enjoy a disease-free and active lifestyle and increase their longevity. Thus, the products that are offered by companies operating within the animal health market are formulated to achieve this end in all types of animals be it companion animals, livestock or even wild animals.
The key products within the animal health market are: Vaccines, pharmaceuticals and medicinal feed additives. Of these, the pharmaceuticals segment is the leader as far as revenue is concerned. It contributes significantly by creating products that improve the health and longevity of both companion animals and livestock.

According to the findings of the report, the segment of veterinary healthcare has witnessed significant development (by revenue) because of a slew of factors working together. For instance, the growing economic development of a number of countries has resulted in higher per capita income, which ultimately gives consumers the benefit of higher disposable income. With this, consumers have reported higher pet ownership this in turn leads to a greater demand for better and more effective nutrition products, especially protein for animals. Pet owners are careful about what their pets consume and do not hesitate from spending more on quality/organic products. At the same time, farmers invest in quality medicines and nutraceuticals to improve the productivity of farm animals (milk, eggs, meat etc.), as well as the quality of their meat.

The report analyzes the global animal health market, with a focus on the trends that will promote higher development of the market. The key markets that are discussed in the report are: the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. All of these developed countries hold massive potential for the animal health market. This report also profiles the three major players in the animal health industry, namely, Merck, Zoetis, and Elli Lilly.

Disease burden and patient reported outcomes among patients with moderate to severe psoriasis: an ethnography study …
Posted: at 4:42 pm
(PRWEB) December 30, 2014
Psoriasis: Targets and Therapy has published the original research Disease burden and patient reported outcomes among patients with moderate to severe psoriasis: An ethnography study.
As corresponding author Mr Siva Narayanan says Our ethnography study is one of the first of its kind in the Psoriasis arena to uncover and describe subtle or less well-defined HRQoL concepts and highlight the voice of the patient and their perception of their disease. As such, we were able to highlight the issues such as patients self-isolation, relationships with their partner and family, self-consciousness and anxiety, and the extensive planning and daily routines that are required to cope with everyday life and avoid uncomfortable social situations. We also exposed cultural differences in this study, including differing expression of emotional impacts and (un)willingness/(in)ability to discuss psoriasis with others, which contributes to severe psychosocial burden.
Mr Narayanan continues We believe that the findings from our study could aid families, care givers and healthcare providers alike in recognizing the psoriasis disease burden (from patient perspective) and accordingly suggest coping techniques to improve patient HRQoL. Further, our results could inform development and/or refining of PRO instruments in psoriasis.
As Dr Uwe Wollina, Editor-in-Chief, explains There are very few investigations on psoriasis available. This paper tries to bridge this gap of knowledge.
Psoriasis: Targets and Therapy is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal focusing on psoriasis, nail psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and related conditions, identification of therapeutic targets and the optimal use of integrated treatment interventions to achieve improved outcomes and quality of life.
Dove Medical Press Ltd is a privately held company specializing in the publication of Open Access peer-reviewed journals across the broad spectrum of science, technology and especially medicine.

Health Beat: Cancer gene: Medicine's next big thing?
Posted: at 4:42 pm
DALLAS -
Five-year-old Elizabeth Eastham has just finished a round of chemotherapy to treat kidney cancer. It's a tough battle, but Elizabeth's mom knows today's discoveries may bring tomorrow's hope.
"With what they find with your child can help another child later on would be fantastic," said Angela Eastham, Elizabeth's mother.
Dr. Hao Zhu is researching how pediatric cancers develop on the genetic level. He's pinpointed a gene that contributes to childhood cancers like neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor and liver cancer.
"And what we hope to do is to discover specific genetic targets for novel drugs to kill cancers without hurting the rest of the body," said Zhu, assistant professor Childrens Research Institute at UT Southwestern.
In laboratory mice, Zhu has found that the lin28 gene, which normally contributes to embryonic growth, also plays a role in cancer formation in fully developed juveniles.
"We hope one day to be able to treat and diagnose cancers better in children," Zhu explained.
"You don't want this for your child," said Eastham, "But you know that everything is in God's plan, and you know he saw us through this entire process and kept our strength up, and everyone's strength up around us to keep going and face one day at a time."
It may be years from the laboratory to the patient, but this discovery, published in the journal Cancer Cell, gives researchers hope that understanding how cancer works will lead to better treatments for children in the future.
