Fin24.com | Google's Gmail blocked in China

Beijing - Google's Gmail was blocked in China after months of disruptions to the world's biggest email service, with an anti-censorship advocate suggesting the Great Firewall was to blame.

Large numbers of Gmail web addresses were cut off in China on Friday, said GreatFire.org, a China-based freedom of speech advocacy group. Users said the service was still down on Monday.

"I think the government is just trying to further eliminate Google's presence in China and even weaken its market overseas," said a member of GreatFire.org, who uses a pseudonym.

"Imagine if Gmail users might not get through to Chinese clients. Many people outside China might be forced to switch away from Gmail."

Google's own Transparency Report, which shows real-time traffic to Google services, displayed a sharp drop-off in traffic to Gmail from China on Friday.

"We've checked and there's nothing wrong on our end," a Singapore-based spokesman for Google said in an email.

Almost all of Google's services have been heavily disrupted in China since June this year, but until last week Gmail users could still access emails downloaded via protocols like IMAP, SMTP and POP3. These had let people communicate using Gmail on apps like the Apple iPhone's Mail and Microsoft Outlook.

China maintains tight control over the internet, nipping in the bud any signs of dissent or challenges to the ruling Communist Party's leadership.

The country is host to the world's most sophisticated internet censorship mechanism, known as the Great Firewall of China. Critics say China has stepped up its disruption of foreign online services like Google over the past year to create an internet cut off from the rest of the world.

Ron Paul On The Real Meaning Of The 1914 Christmas Truce

Posted: at 5:42 am

Submitted by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity,

One hundred years ago last week, on Christmas Eve, 1914, German and British soldiers emerged from the horrors of World War One trench warfare to greet each other, exchange food and gifts, and to wish each other a Merry Christmas. What we remember now as the Christmas Truce began with soldiers singing Christmas carols together from in the trenches. Eventually the two sides climbed out of the trenches and met in person. In the course of this two day truce, which lasted until December 26, 1914, the two sides also exchanged prisoners, buried their dead, and even played soccer with each other.

How amazing to think that the celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace could bring a brief pause in one of the most destructive wars in history. How sad that it was not to last.

The Christmas Truce showed that given the choice, people do not want to be out fighting and killing each other. It is incredibly damaging to most participants in war to face the task of killing their fellow man. That is one reason we see today an epidemic of PTSD and suicides among US soldiers sent overseas on multiple deployments.

The Christmas Truce in 1914 was joyous for the soldiers, but it was dangerous for the political leadership on both sides. Such fraternization with the enemy could not be tolerated by the war-makers. Never again was the Christmas Truce repeated on such a scale, as the governments of both sides explicitly prohibited any repeat of such a meeting. Those who had been greeting each other had to go back to killing each other on orders from those well out of harms way.

As much as governments would like to stamp out such humanization of the enemy, it is still the case today that soldiers on the ground will meet and share thoughts with those they are meant to be killing. Earlier this month, soldiers from opposing sides of the Ukraine civil war met in eastern Ukraine to facilitate the transfer of supplies and the rotation of troops. They shook hands and wished that the war would be over. One army battalion commander was quoted as saying at the meeting, I think it's a war between brothers that nobody wants. The top brass should sort things out. And us? We are soldiers, we do what we're told.

I am sure these same sentiments exist in many of the ongoing conflicts that are pushed by the governments involved -- and in many cases by third party governments seeking to benefit from the conflict.

The encouraging message we should take from the Christmas Truce of 100 years ago is that given the opportunity, most humans do not wish to kill each other. As Nazi leader Hermann Goring said during the Nuremberg war crimes trials, naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. But, as he added, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

This is where our efforts must be focused. To oppose all war propaganda perpetrated by governments against the will of the people.

Veterans stunned by discovery of human remains on VFW grounds

Posted: at 5:41 am

The grisly discovery of two sets of human remains on the grounds of a Brockton VFW has stunned members of the post, who say theyve seen enough death.

All the members here are combat veterans, so something like this is upsetting, said post commander James Doherty, a Vietnam veteran who served as a helicopter door gunner.

He said the Veterans of Foreign Wars post owns 20 acres off North Quincy Street that is used by hikers, anglers and bow hunters. But Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said yesterday the land also was used as a dumping ground for at least two sets of human remains.

The dismembered body of a woman believed to be in her 20s was discovered alongside the skeletal remains of another person Sunday.

Brockton police responded to a report of possible human remains about a quarter-mile into the woods off of North Quincy Street at 12:18 p.m. Sunday.

The two bodies, found in close proximity to each other, were in very different stages of decomposition, Cruz said. The more intact body, believed to be a woman in her 20s with medium-length brown hair, had been dismembered, he said. The age and sex of the other, more skeletal, remains, possibly also dismembered, has not yet been determined, Cruz said. The cause and manner of death have not been determined.

Neighbors were rattled by the gruesome find just steps from their backyards.

Im glad they found them when they did, one resident said. Hopefully, they can find out who they are and their families can get some closure.

Another neighbor said she was too distraught to talk about it. Its disgusting, she said.

Alan Tate of Mission for the Missing, a nonprofit organization that helps search for missing people, said investigators will have their hands full determining who killed them, how and why.
