Self-censorship is not the way forward

I was disappointed to see Marco Armentsay he wishes he never wrote his poston Apples software quality,Apple has lost the functional high ground.
The point he made is one Ive tweeted about (though not written about) a number of times over the years. The big problem facing Apple isnt a deficit of innovation, but bitrot creeping into their codebase. You dont have to look far to see it: for example, theres a race condition in text handling that has been there since at least OS X 10.3.
The point needed to be made by someone who knows and loves Apple, someone who is a leader in their developer community, and someone who has a reputation for being fair and even-handed. Thats Marco. He did an excellent job of offering constructive criticism to a company that he genuinely loves.
Yes, there is a risk that anything you write will turn into a media storm. Thats a risk you have to live with; its unfortunate, but its not going away. Its also important to say what needs to be said. Self-censorship is not the way forward.

Former congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul says our entire system has been based on lies and ignorance.
If Americans were honest with themselves they would acknowledge that the Republic is no more. We now live in a police state. If we do not recognize and resist this development, freedom and prosperity for all Americans will continue to deteriorate. All liberties in America today are under siege.
It didnt happen overnight. It took many years of neglect for our liberties to be given away so casually for a promise of security from the politicians. The tragic part is that the more security was promised physical and economic the less liberty was protected.
With cradle-to-grave welfare protecting all citizens from any mistakes and a perpetual global war on terrorism, which a majority of Americans were convinced was absolutely necessary for our survival, our security and prosperity has been sacrificed.
It was all based on lies and ignorance. Many came to believe that their best interests were served by giving up a little freedom now and then to gain a better life.

After every other conservative alternative to Mitt Romney crashed and burned (libertarian Ron Paul is in a category of his own), from the rubble emerges Rick Santorum. But he isnt just the last man standing. He is the first challenger to be plausibly presidential: knowledgeable, articulate, experienced, of stable character and authentic ideology.
Hed been ignored largely because he appeared unelectable out of office for five years, having lost his Senate seat in Pennsylvania by a staggering 17 points in 2006.
However, with his virtual tie for first in Iowa, he sheds the loser label and seizes the momentum, meaning millions of dollars worth of free media to make up for his lack of money. Hes got the stage to make his case, plus the luck of a scheduling quirk: If he can make it through the next three harrowing primaries, the (relative) February lull would allow him to build a national campaign structure before Super Tuesday on March 6.

An enormous mushroom has been discovered in China.
At its widest point, the Lingzhi is 3ft (107cm) wide and weighs a staggering 16.4lbs (7.45kg).
The oval fungus, popularly known as the 'immortality mushroom,' is believed to possess many health giving benefits.

Store owner Wei Fangning showed off the giant mushroom - also known as ganoderma lucidum - at his shop in Hezhou city, in China's south-west Guangxi province.
The Lingzhi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years.
It is very distinctive looking as it is flat, with a conspicuous red-varnished, kidney-shaped cap and, depending on a caps's age, is white with brown pores underneath.

Liberals shopping for new human rights commissioner as Barbara Hall retires

The Ontario government is looking for a new human rights watchdog.
Former Toronto mayor Barbara Hall, chief commissioner for the Ontario Human Rights Commission, is retiring at the end of next month.
Hall, 68, who was appointed to the $167,000-a-year post by former premier Dalton McGuinty in 2005, has had her term extended four times.
Her contract expires Feb. 27 and a new chief is expected to be named before then.
From 1994 to 1997, Hall was the last mayor of the old city of Toronto and twice ran for the mayoralty of the amalgamated megacity, losing in 1997 to Mel Lastman and in 2003 to David Miller.
Sources say several prominent candidates are being considered for the job.
One person being touted is Bernie Farber, former chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress and a long-time anti-racism activist.
Farber who ran for the Liberals in the 2011 provincial election, losing Thornhill to Progressive Conservative Peter Shurman has worked with at-risk youth, battered women, and served on numerous community race-relations and safety committees over the years.
Another potential candidate is former New Democrat MPP Rosario Marchese.
Marchese, who lost the riding of Trinity-Spadina to Liberal Han Dong in the June 12 provincial election, was minister of culture and communications in former premier Bob Raes government and served at Queens Park for 24 years.

`Post-umbrella era' starts with rally

About 50,000 are expected to join a February 1 rally for universal suffrage as the post-Umbrella Movement era begins, organizer Civil Human Rights Front said.
The walk from Victoria Park will end at the Chater Road pedestrian zone, where protesters may lie down depending on the situation, group convener Daisy Chan Sin-ying said.
Chan said the rally is only a beginning for the post-Umbrella Movement era. "During this new stage, the government issued a public sentiment report and launched the second round of political consultation. But the report did not reflect public opinion ... it even pushed the responsibility to the pan democrats," she said.
Chan explained that the sentiment report, submitted to the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in Beijing, does not give reasons for or provide analysis of the 79-day movement, which ended on December 14.
She said it is not a comprehensive report.
She said the rally aims to pressure the SAR government into relaunching the "five-step" process for the 2017 chief executive elections.
She also said the August 31 framework by tne NPC Standing Committee is still a small group election that prescreens two to three candidates.
They called on the central government to withdraw the framework.
