$1 Million Prize to Extend Human Life Beyond 120

Posted: January 12, 2015 at 8:47 pm

London: A Silicon Valley entrepreneur has launched a $1 million prize challenging scientists to discover the 'elixir of life' and push human lifespan past its apparent maximum of about 120 years.

Fifteen scientific teams have so far entered the prize to find the elusive fountain of youth.

According to hedge fund manager Dr Joon Yun, the chance of dying between ages 25 and 26 is only 0.1 per cent.

He now wants scientists to "hack the code of life" and push human lifespan past its apparent maximum of about 120 years, the Guardian reported.

Dr Yun believes it is possible to "solve aging" and get people to live, healthily, more or less indefinitely.

Dr Yun plans to offer more money for feats above and beyond until longevity is no longer an "issue."

Dr Yun is not the only one who sees a new flowering of anti-aging research.

In 2013, Google launched California Life Company (Calico) with a mission to reverse engineer the biology that controls lifespan and "devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives."

In 2014, pioneering American biologist and technologist Craig Venter along with the founder of the X Prize Foundation, Peter Diamandis, announced a new company called Human Longevity Inc.

The company plans to create a database of 1 million human genome sequences by 2020 that will give key information for a longer, healthier life.

Prevent eczema, skin issues from arising in dry winter air

Posted: at 8:47 pm

Picking up a travel-sized lotion to take on the go may not be a bad idea to help prevent skin issues from developing this winter.

If you have chronic dry skin, you can develop different types of eczema during the winter ... that can flare with the dryer weather and when the dry heat that comes on, Krystle Kane, physicians assistant at Advanced Dermatology, Pottsville, said Wednesday.

A specific type of eczema Kane talked about was atopic eczema. This type of eczema often runs in families who may have allergies, such as hay fever and asthma, but can also have sensitive skin and a history of eruptions called atopic dermatitis.

While eczema can form at any age, this type is most common with infants and young adults, and improves before age 25, according to information provided by the Advanced Dermatology office.

Over-washing hands to avoid germs can also lead to hand eczema, Kane said.

A simple rash or patch of dry skin can turn into eczema over exposure to water or dry air, as well as different detergents, solvents, cleaning agents, chemicals, rubber gloves or ingredients in skin and personal care products.

Common areas for eczema are behind the knees, in the creases of elbows and on the face or cheeks, Kane said.

Topical steroids are used to decrease inflammation in eczema, but is not an absolute cure.

While eczema is not dangerous, it can be prevented by moisturizing.

Its not dangerous per say, but if you leave it go and you develop into eczema or you chronically scratch areas open, theres always potential for bacterial infections to develop, Kane said.

Researchers identify new gene mutations linked to colorectal cancer in African-Americans

Posted: at 8:46 pm

Discovery paves way for new approaches for population with highest incidence and mortality rates from this kind of cancer

Case Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers have identified new gene mutations unique to colon cancers in African Americans - the population with the highest incidence and death rates of any group for this disease.

This discovery - namely, that colorectal cancers appear different on a molecular level in African Americans - offers new hope for these patients. With this groundbreaking knowledge, scientists now will seek to develop treatments that target the distinct nature of the disease in African Americans - and, they hope, begin to reduce the devastation disproportionately wrought on this population.

The findings, published in the Jan. 12 edition of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), only became possible because of technological advances in gene sequencing and computational analysis. The study that revealed this invaluable information ultimately involved review of 1.5 billion bits of data.

"This milestone study builds on our previous genetic research on colorectal cancer," said Sanford Markowitz, MD, PhD, corresponding author on the study, and principal investigator of the $11.3 million federal gastrointestinal cancers research program (GI SPORE) that includes this project. "It illustrates the extraordinary impact that dedicated, collaborative teams can make when they combine scientific experience and ingenuity with significant investment."

Announced in 2011, this GI SPORE program is one of just five in the country. Markowitz, Ingalls Professor of Cancer Genetics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and a medical oncologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, included studies of the disease's behavior in minority patients as part of his team's original grant application. The disparity between colorectal cancer rates in African Americans and other groups has long existed; the most recent federal statistics, for example, put age-adjusted incidence at 46.8 cases for every 100,000 African Americans, and 38.1 cases for every 100,000 Caucasian Americans. Yet scientists have struggled to determine what factors - biological, economic, environmental, or others - account for this disparity.

"These advancements underscore the importance of university-based research," said Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and representative of the 11th district, which includes Case Western Reserve and UH Case Medical Center. "I am proud that researchers from Northeast Ohio are taking meaningful steps toward identifying pathways to block a devastating disease that disproportionately affects members of the African American community."

From the very start, Markowitz and his colleagues believed the answer to this question would be found through genetic analysis.

"Identifying gene mutations has been the basis of all the new drugs that have been developed to treat cancer in the last decade," Markowitz said. "Many of the new cancer drugs on the market today were developed to target specific genes in which mutations were discovered to cause specific cancers."

One of the lead researchers on the project was senior author Joseph E. Willis, MD, associate professor of pathology, Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, director of tissue management, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Vice Chair of Pathology for Clinical Affairs at UH Case Medical Center.

Larry Wilmore prepares to replace Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central

Posted: at 8:45 pm

Larry Wilmore says that his new "Nightly Show" launching on Comedy Central later this month will be like a hybrid of "The Daily Show" and "Politically Incorrect," combining comic observations and a topical panel discussion.

Wilmore's half-hour show, which will air at 10:30 p.m. weeknights following Jon Stewart's "Daily Show," is replacing "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert headed to CBS. Unlike the star of "The Colbert Report," Wilmore will be himself, and not play a character.

"It may be comic, it may be provocative," Wilmore said last weekend. "Who knows? It will go where it goes."

Celebrities will be part of the mix, "but they won't be hawking books and movies," he said. He'll begin test shows next week in anticipation of Monday's premiere.

Wilmore, 53, is a comic veteran with extensive experience onstage and behind the scenes, most recently developing the ABC comedy "black-ish." He's known to Comedy Central viewers as the "senior black correspondent" on "The Daily Show." He jumped at the chance for the new show when Stewart suggested it, somewhat surprised at his age to be getting the opportunity.

It was initially called "The Minority Report," but was changed after Fox raised complications because it is preparing a show with the same name. "Meet the Rest" was briefly considered before they settled on "The Nightly Show."

"If you're watching 'The Daily Show' and it feels like it's getting a little darker, it's probably 'The Nightly Show,'" he said.

Some 417 people applied to be writers on "The Nightly Show" before Wilmore and executive producer Rory Albanese settled on 10. Wilmore said he was looking for people who would challenge him.

"I already have my voice," he said. "I don't want to have a roomful of people who are going to reflect me."

Pressed by a reporter on how he might find comedy on a difficult week like this, with the attacks and hostage-taking in France, Wilmore said, "They're starting to kill satirists just as a brother is launching his show. The timing of that is a little bit scary." For some stories, he said the best thing may be to wait to gain perspective.
