Battling Censorship

On Jan. 7, 2015 Paris endured its deadliest attack in modern times. That morning, three Islamist gunmen tore through the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. This cowardly and barbaric attack was thought to be perpetrated in response to a 2011 issue that carried a caricature of the prophet Mohammad. Visual depictions of Mohammad are forbidden by Sunni Islamic teachings.
Despite the arrests of seven suspects connected to the attacks, the two brothers thought to be the gunmen, Cherif and Said Kouachi, remained at large for three days until two separate standoffs occurred on Jan. 9.
Friday, sustained gunfire followed by explosions echoed through a warehouse where the Kouachi brothers had taken a hostage. Not far away, a second confrontation was developing at a Kosher Market in eastern Paris. Another man said to be connected to the brothers threatened to kill others if there were any attempts made to capture Cherif and Said Kouachi. More died on this day, including the Kouachi brothers.
In total, 17 people lost their lives during this stretch of chaos. On Sunday morning, an organized march, the largest in France since the end of WWII, drew a crowd of 1.6 million in the streets of Paris.
Charlie Hebdo's creative professionals waged a war against censorship. Throughout history, and across the world today, censorship is used as a means of social control. Freedom of expression is an ongoing struggle.
As opinions are shaped and shifted by those who say what's right and wrong our choices no longer become ours. The 12 artists and professionals at Charlie Hebdo lost their lives in a fight for freedom. Let's continue their fight by having our voices heard and by letting every decision we make be our very own.

OPINION What the latest Bollywood hit says about Indias fraught relationship with religion and secularism by Sawan Patel | Jan 14 2015 | 5 hours ago
India is a land of contradictions. It is home to a huge high-tech labor force as well as a multitude of low-skill agricultural and industrial workers. It is a relatively liberal democracy, yet allies itself closely with the Russian Federation, an autocratic nation. It is the birthplace of three major world religions Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism yet is constantly divided by religious violence and upheaval with a long history of censorship and strong religious forces: it was the first country to ban Salman Rushdies The Satanic Verses. Religious groups have long held great power in Indian politics and society. This is even considering the fact that the Indian constitution states the country is a secular republic.
Even though the Indian government is secular, it is responsible through its loose hate-speech laws for protecting the values of its varied religious and ethnic groups. This requires censorship of what it deems offensive to any group. The Indian constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but the government has loosely interpreted laws regarding hate speech and public order, which are used very liberally to censor books, movies, and television. The logic behind this is that with such a long history of violence and such a diverse population, the only way to keep the peace is by preventing that which is deemed inflammatory from being publicly distributed.
Regardless, religion is one of the most satirized topics in Bollywood the Indian Hollywood but the new record-breaking hit PK is the latest and greatest in a line of movies that includes the critically acclaimed Oh My God: in which a man sues religious groups that represent Gods will for the destruction of his shop.
However, PK was not intended to be a serious film. It rather playfully places its emphasis critically not on religion as a whole but rather just on organized religion as it appears in India. The movies lighthearted nature is especially evident in the name, a play on the English way of writing out the Hindi word for drunk. It simply suggests that Indians should not listen to religious God-men who have achieved a God-like status among Indias poor and uneducated for their miracles and ability to communicate directly with various deities. The message is to turn inward to find religious experience rather than basing it on communal values. These God-men are criticized for being conservative and corrupt by playing on their vast support for political and monetary gain.
The radical aspect of this film comes in when one considers the context of censorship toward religious criticism prevalent in India. Films and books like these are rare in that they are never the combination of being this radical and also this influential. The reason it was a successful film is that it is funny; the reason it was the highest grossing Indian film of all time was that it resonated with people. They were finally really allowed to see both the truth and that others feel the same way as they do about these corrupt religious figures.
However, it is the backlash to this film that is most revealing of the true nature of Indian society. Even before its release, it was almost prevented from being screened by the censorship board because it supposedly promoted vulgarity.
After the films release, the true power of Indias conservative religious groups was revealed. Both religious leaders and fringe groups condemned the movie. These extremist religious groups organized burnings of the films posters. Even more portentously, many theatres in major cities were forced to cancel the screening of the movie because of threats to the owners and the theatres themselves. Theatres were threatened with being ransacked and burned.
This is the status of Indias relationship with religion. Even the government has been divided as shown by recently elected Prime Minister Narendra Modis support from both Hindu nationalists and the politically powerful sages. His checkered past as a Hindu extremist combined with his pro-Hindu reaction to anti-Islam riots when he was the governor of Gujarat in 2002 where he basically sat by and condoned the violence should have rendered him unacceptable as a Prime Ministerial candidate. Instead, he rode a Hindu wave of support to victory.
The combination of government censorship and public backlash from entrenched religious interests is the root of many of these problems. People are not allowed to confront the religious issues because they are hidden to maintain order. The only way for India to move forward as a democracy and a nation is to take off these democratic training wheels, confront their religiously turbulent past, and move past some archaic traditions.

Rand Paul announces campaign manager for likely 2016 campaign
Posted: at 5:45 am
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Tuesday announced the hiring of a campaign manager for his likely 2016 presidential bid, part of an aggressive effort to build a national political team as the race for the White House heats up.
The hiring of strategist Chip Englander, who recently guided a gubernatorial candidate to victory in Illinois, marks a clear step forward for the Kentucky Republican as he prepares to transform his cadre of loyalists into a full-scale campaign.
Doug Stafford, Pauls longtime confidant, will remain as his chief political adviser. In an interview Tuesday, Stafford said he will rely on Englander for the day-to-day execution of Pauls operation.
The move underscores Paul's unorthodox approach to presidential politics and his expected candidacy, with plans to put an emphasis on outreach to the poor and younger voters while also courting conservative activists in early-primary states.
In an interview Tuesday, Englander argued that Pauls unconventional positions would lay the foundation for a potent Republican coalition. Paul has articulated mostly non-interventionist views on foreign policy, while taking hardline stances against tax hikes and President Obamas health-care law domestically.
America has intractable problems and its going to take a transformational leader to fix them, Englander said. Senator Paul is going to be the bold, transformational figure in this race.
The hiring of Englander comes as former Florida governor Jeb Bush and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney are moving closer to launching their own 2016 campaigns and connecting with donors and Republican officials.
Rather than bringing on a consultant well-known in Washington or one with ties to his father, former Texas congressman Ron Paul, the Kentucky Republican has enlisted a youthful outsider to coordinate his efforts.
Englander, 33, who spent much of his early career working in California politics, last year managed Republican Bruce Rauners campaign for governor in Illinois, guiding the wealthy businessman through a competitive primary and then to a decisive win in the general election - in part by outpacing Democrats in some urban areas and steering clear of hot-button social issues.
Stafford cited the work of Englander in helping Rauner win a blue state where Republicans have had scattered success as a key reason why Rand Paul settled on him. He also focused on Englander's management of Rauner's sprawling network of volunteers and a campaign budget of nearly $70 million.

Rand Paul looks to steal 2016 spotlight

Jeb Bush is a Big Government Republican. Mitt Romney had his chance. And Marco Rubios recent jabs on foreign policy are silly and childish.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is back in insurgent mode, lobbing bombs at his potential Republican presidential rivals and looking to take back a political spotlight that Bush and Romney have been hogging lately. Paul is also heading to New Hampshire and Nevada this week, hoping to strike a fire with voters who want a new voice to carry the GOPs message to the White House.
Story Continued Below
You need a candidate who reaches out to new constituencies and is able to bring new people into the party, Paul said. Because if we do the same old, same old candidates, we are going to get the same old result.
While other Republican House and Senate members attend this weeks rare GOP joint congressional summit in Pennsylvania, Paul will be in New Hampshire to meet with mothers and activists railing against Common Core, the education program reviled by the tea party right. An added advantage: The issue gives him a chance to further needle Bush, a prominent Common Core supporter who would probably be a front-runner for the presidential nomination.
(Also on POLITICO: Rand Paul taps Chip Englander as likely 2016 campaign manager)
In an interview Tuesday, the Kentucky Republican did just that.
Hes been a proponent of Common Core, a proponent probably of a much bigger government a Big Government Republican who believes more things should be occurring in Washington rather than decentralization, Paul said of the former Florida governor. He added that his rivals brother and father, former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush, also backed education policies aimed at more Washington control.
Jeb Bush spokeswoman Kristy Campbell responded: Gov. Bush would put his successful conservative governing record up against anyones.
Pauls assessment of Romney is only slightly less critical.

How Facebook Knows You Better Than Your Friends Do
Posted: at 5:43 am
In the movie Her, Joaquin Phoenixs character falls in love with his computers operating system, which through the magic of machine learning and Hollywood comes to know and understand him better than anyone else. Its a futuristic critique of human reliance on technology. But according to one new study, its a future that may not be all that far away.
This week, researchers from the University of Cambridge and Stanford University released a study indicating that Facebook may be better at judging peoples personalities than their closest friends, their spouses, and in some cases, even themselves. The study compared peoples Facebook Likes to their own answers in a personality questionnaire, as well as the answers provided by their friends and family, and found that Facebook outperformed any human, no matter their relation to the subjects.
Thats a substantial finding, the researchers say, particularly given the fact that human beings are evolutionarily designed to have good personality judgement. Its what keeps us out of danger and influences our relationships. But the realization that, perhaps, computers are better equipped to make these judgements than humans are could help cut through the natural bias that pervades human interactions. Never mind what this says about how much of power Facebook wields.
Were walking personality prediction machines, says Michal Kosinski, a computer science professor at Stanford, but computers beat us at our own game.
The researchers began with a 100-item personality questionnaire that went viral after David Stillwell, a psychometrics professor at Cambridge, posted it on Facebook back in 2007. Respondents answered questions that were meant to root out five key personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Based on that survey, the researchers scored each respondent in all five traits.
Then, the researchers created an algorithm and fed it with every respondents personality scores, as well as their Likes, to which subjects voluntarily gave researchers access. The researchers only included Likes that respondents shared with at least 20 other respondents. That enabled the model to connect certain Likes to certain personality traits. If, for instance, several people who liked Snooki on Facebook also scored high in the extroverted category, the system would learn that Snooki lovers are more outgoing. The more Likes the system saw, the better its judgment became.
In the end, the researchers found that with information on just ten Facebook Likes, the algorithm was more accurate than the average persons colleague. With 150 Likes, it could outsmart peoples families, and with 300 Likes, it could best a persons spouse.
Whats more, at times, the Facebook model could beat the subjects own answers. As part of the survey, the researchers also asked respondents to answer concrete questions such as how many drinks they have a week or what type of career path theyve chosen. Then, they tried to see if they could predict how many drinks someone was likely to have in a week based on their answers to the personality test.
Once again, they found that Facebook Likes were a better indicator of peoples substance use than even their own questionnaires were. When people take the questionnaire, they present themselves in a slightly more positive way than they really are, Kosinski says. This tendency to self-enhance makes computers slightly more objective.
While the researchers admit the results were surprising, they say theres good reason for it. For starters, computers dont forget. While our judgment of people may change based on our most recent or most dramatic interactions with them, computers give a persons entire history equal weight. Computers also dont have experiences or opinions of their own. Theyre not limited by their own cultural references, and they dont find certain personality traits, likes, or interests good or bad. Computers dont understand that certain personalities are more socially desirable, Kosinski says. Computers dont like any of us.

Watch The Deckhouse Of The Most Futuristic Ship Drop Into Place
Posted: at 5:43 am
No matter which way you slice it, the new Zumwalt-class destroyer is one of the most futuristic ships in the world. That sort of futurism isn't limited to its operations on water. It starts even while it's being built, as they basically snap the whole thing into place like Lego bricks.
The USS Michael Monsoor, named after a US Navy SEAL killed during the Iraq War when he jumped on a grenade to save his teammates and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, is currently under construction at Bath Iron Works in Maine. Modern warships aren't entirely built from the keel up, as in traditional shipbuilding. Instead, huge sections of the ship are fabricated in blocks on land, and then attached together.
That's basically what you're seeing here. In the Michael Monsoor's case, the deckhouse, as the big sticking-up bit is known, was manufactured in Mississippi, then placed on a barge and shipped up to Maine for final assembly, where it was placed on top of the rest of the hull.
The deckhouse of the ship itself isn't made out of super-hardened steel, as you would find on a destroyer of old, but rather a carbon fiber-balsawood (yes, balsawood, the same as you find on model airplanes) composite. Carbon fiber itself is incredibly strong, and by using it in the deckhouse up top, it saves a ton of weight and lowers the center of mass in the tumblehome hull design. The carbon fiber-balsa combination also resists corrosion and adds to the boat's already considerable stealthiness, which are two huge factors in building a ship of the future.
Despite the lightweight construction, the deckhouse still weighs about 1000 tons, making this an incredibly impressive lifting job in its own right. But once everything was in place and the deckhouse was up in the air, the only thing left to do was slide the rest of the 610-foot-long ship underneath it. And then, you know, install all the radars, antennas, and everything else that goes inside it, and integrate it all together.
But from the sounds that the Navy is making, it appears as if it's all going well. Expect to see the USS Michael Monsoor in commission in 2016.
Update: We've changed the headline to reflect a slight wording issue. In Navy terms, the "head" is the toilet. The deckhouse is not a giant toilet, despite our wildest dreams.
