Ron Paul defends insane Charlie Hebdo conspiracy theory: Im just trying to get the truth out!

Posted: January 17, 2015 at 8:41 pm

Two days after the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity republished a column suggesting that last weeks terror attack on the satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo was a false flag operation, the former congressman himself weighed in on the conspiracy theory Friday, saying his group ran the columnsimply to pose some questions about the official version of events.

In the column, paleoconservative crank and Reagan administration Treasury Department official Paul Craig Roberts cast doubt on the notion that the Paris attack truly stemmed from Muslim anger over Charlie Hebdos cartoons lampooning Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Roberts, a notorious 9/11 truther, speculated that the U.S. government executed the attack to punish France for its independent foreign policy, citing its vote at the United Nations to recognize Palestine as a state and French President Francois Hollandes recent call to ease sanctions on Russia.

Clearly, France was showing too much foreign policy independence. The attack on Charlie Hebdo serves to cow France and place France back under Washingtons thumb, Roberts wrote.

Appearing on Newsmax TV today, Paul defended Roberts column, arguing that neither he nor Roberts actually believe the attack was a false flag. They just Have Some Questions.

I think he suggested it, he wanted a discussion and he has some really good things in there, Paul said. Its a shame that the media doesnt pick up and say what about this chief investigator of this event committed suicide right in the middle of it? I have no idea whats going on there but that to me is big stuff.

The three-time presidential candidate whose son Rand is expected to mount a 2016 White House run contended that by his conspiracy theory, Roberts showed a healthy skepticism of government.

Its sort of like the people of this country especially have lost a lot of confidence in governments per se, including our own, Paul said. I mean, weve been trying to get to all the answers of Benghazi, and of course Fast and Furious was a scandal, nobody believes those answers. Eighty percent of the American people dont even believe the Kennedy Commission on who killed Kennedy. So people are very skeptical, and I think this is the whole point.

Though Paul maintained that the column wasnt a declaration that the U.S. government carried out the attacks it was merely an effort to try to get the truth out, he said he also implied that he finds Roberts theory plausible.

Of course we have Rahm Emanuel who says dont ever let an emergency goes to waste, and I think that is part of what is going on there, this is a design to restructure and reorient people on foreign policy, Paul said.

Paul in Vegas, says hes not worried about Romneys presidential hopes

Posted: at 8:41 pm

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul said Friday he isnt worried about the prospect of third Mitt Romney presidential campaign because voters and former supporters are looking for somebody new in 2016.

Therell be a big spirited debate over whether or not hes had his chance, Paul said in an interview after chatting up diners at the Peppermill Restaurant, a popular Strip eatery.

Romney, a Mormon, won the GOP presidential caucus in Nevada in 2008 and in 2012, earning about 50 percent of the vote thanks in part to the states politically active members of the church. Pauls father, former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, came in second in 2008 and third in 2012.

Romney privately told fundraisers and supporters this past week that hes considering a third White House bid, which would shake up the GOP presidential contest. Hed compete most directly with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie if the two establishment hopefuls also jump into the race, which appears likely.

Rand Paul said he believes he can draw some of Nevadas Mormon vote if he runs for the GOP nomination because that churchs believers are conservative like him and they, too, may think Romneys time has passed.

I think theres a reasonable chance, even though Mormons may have a great affinity for Governor Romney, he said, They may say, You know what. There are other conservatives in the race that may be able to hold the banner better this time.

Pauls visit to Las Vegas comes two days after he toured New Hampshire, which holds the nations first primary. He said he plans to travel to Iowa on Feb. 7, visiting the state that holds the first caucus vote. Nevada, too, is one of the early voting states, holding the first presidential caucus in the West since 2008.

While in Las Vegas, Paul also met behind-the-scenes with potential financial backers, including a representative of the Fertitta brothers, Lorenzo and Frank, of Station Casinos and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Last week, Paul met Las Vegas Sands Corp. CEO and top GOP contributor Sheldon Adelson in Washington, D.C., where they both attended a Republican Jewish Coalition meeting, according to a GOP source.

Paul plans to meet voters at Renos Atlantis hotel-casino on Saturday. In Northern Nevada he will attend fundraisers for his victory committee, collecting money for his Senate re-election campaign. He also headlined a Friday night fundraiser in Las Vegas with the proceeds going to the Nevada Republican Party.

Letter: Please Dana Point, Dont Become Ordinary

Posted: at 8:41 pm

By David M. Sanders, Dana Point

After reading Andrea Swaynes piece, Building Character in the Jan. 9-15 issue of the Dana Point Times, I couldnt help but sit down and consider the opportunity it laid on the table.

As an architect who has been a Dana Point resident for over three decades, the one thing I always relished about Dana Point was the remarkable degree of freedom it gave to designers. This freedom is incredibly unique in a coastal community. Dana Point has been an island of artistic libertarianism in a vipers den of architectural totalitarianism for as long as I can remember, and personally, Id be sad to see that change.

Obviously, in historical terms, Dana Point has positioned its style as a sort of quasi-Cape Cod groove, which is fine, as far as it applies to certain sites and areas of the city. However, once you leave the specific planned areas, you see Dana Points real charactera huge variety of styles and individual visions of architecture. Take a look at it! You have the recently completed pedestrian overpass at the south end of town in the Spanish Colonial style only a short walk away from the Organic Modernist landmark that is the Chart House Restaurant.

Our two closest neighbors, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, are perfect examples of what I call architectural despotism. While San Juan Capistrano has a bit more credibility for its attitude in light of its long history (dating back to Spanish colonization in the 18th century), San Clementes is laughable in my view, dating back to the vision of a property developer in the early 20th century.

To paraphrase Henry Ford, in vast swathes of San Clemente, You can build anything you like, as long as it has a red tile roof, white plaster and wood windows. Since childhood, I always felt that attitude was utterly antithetical to the American ideal. Id sure be disappointed to see that happen to Dana Point. As a property owner, I find it positively offensive.

If you want to dictate aesthetic values on a piece of property Ive bought and paid for, that brings us right down to the level of statist organs like the old Soviet Union and China. I dont think that was Franklin or Jeffersons vision of the United States. Rather, their vision was to create a society of individuals free to pursue their own desires as long as they didnt infringe on their neighbors rights or property. The argument that putting, for instance, a Modernist building next to someone elses Spanish Colonial Revival villa will detract from its value is a threadbare, tenuous argument. Any realtor will tell you that good location, practical zoning standards and quality schools take the lead in property valuation; architectural style of the neighboring buildings is of almost zero relevance.

If I were made king for a day, Id like to see something unique happen with Dana Point. Id like to see it embrace an attitude of encouraging good architecture, period; no matter the textbook style being expressed. As such, any future planning documents would need to contain standards embracing several architectural styles, and even hybrids of those styles.

As a professional in the field, I enjoy experiencing a wide range of styles from the classical to the modern; my only requirements to declare them good is that they be well-designed, well-constructed and compliant with the zoning standards. Dana Point already has mechanisms in place to insure those qualities, and has maintained a knowledgeable, competent staff of community development personnel to uphold the standards.

If a planning document had to be created, it should provide examples and guidelines for all of Californias imported styles, such as Spanish Colonial, Cape Cod and Mediterranean (to name just a few) as well as its indigenous, vernacular styles such as the 1930s through 1960s wood-clad, heavily-glazed beach cottage, Rudolph Schindlers California modernism, and the Arts and Crafts-era bungalow style (a.k.a. Craftsman style); again, naming just a few.

A farewell to Michel du Cille, photographer and artist with a lovely soul

Posted: at 8:40 pm

His friends and colleagues knew Michel du Cille, the many-laureled Washington Post photographer and editor, only as Michel (pronounced Michael). But at a memorial celebration Friday afternoon, they learned that the name was shorthand. Du Cilles full given name was Michelangelo.

And like the transcendent Renaissance sculptor and painter, du Cille, who died last month of a heart attack at age 58 while covering the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, was hailed as an artist who captured timeless images of human emotion and struggle in his way through the lens of a camera.

A great man, a great artist with a lovely soul, said Donald Graham, former chief executive of The Washington Post Co. Graham, now chairman of Graham Holdings Co., quoted a tribute written by a student of the original Michelangelo: The great ruler of heaven looked down and, seeing these artists attempts, resolved to send to Earth a genius. He further endowed him with true moral philosophy and a sweet, poetic spirit so the world would marvel.

Du Cilles memorial at the Newseum in Washington was by turns solemn, spirited, spiritual, humorous and musical. Friends, colleagues, relatives and even a contingent from du Cilles college newspaper at Indiana University filled the 450-seat Newseum auditorium to overflowing. It was multicultural and multiregional, drawing people from around the country and from Jamaica, du Cilles birthplace.

Du Cilles daughter, Lesley Anne, played a vibrant violin solo in her fathers honor. Leighton, his son, described du Cille as a quiet man who spoke loudly with images he shot, as well as a closet Trekkie who binge-watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. In a loving e-mail exchange with his son about his photos from West Africa, du Cille wrote shortly before he died: My work is a calling to me. I hope it makes a difference.

Before he set off on his final assignment, du Cille texted his love to his wife, Post photographer Nikki Kahn, and enthusiastically wrote, Africa, here you come! Said Kahn, If he were here today, hed be reminding us of the real story: 8,429 lives lost to Ebola and counting. Hed be saying, Remember the real story. Remember the thousands of people in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the rest of the world who are dying and will die from this Ebola virus.

The most eloquent tribute may have been a wordless one: a slide show of du Cilles photos over the decades.

The people depicted included the famous President Obama, the late Post editor Ben Bradlee, civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks and the decidedly not famous drug addicts in filthy surroundings, Ebola patients awaiting death, militiamen (and women) in Sierra Leone, disabled American veterans.

Some of the latter photos won du Cille the third of his Pulitzer Prizes for photography in 2008, for a Post series that documented neglectful conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the District. He also shared a Pulitzer in 1986 with fellow Miami Herald photographer (and future Post staffer) Carol Guzy for photos documenting a volcanic eruption in Colombia, and in 1988 for images of crack-cocaine addicts in Miami.

Under a projection of a smiling du Cille carrying a camera, naturally photojournalist Donald Winslow announced that du Cille would be the posthumous recipient of the National Press Photographers Associations annual Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, the groups highest honor.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY: Volunteers raise awareness about human trafficking

Volunteer Marjorie Saylor, 32, puts up a poster about human trafficking at Del Lago Market in Lake Elsinore as part of a countywide "Day of Action" against human trafficking on Jan. 17, 2015.

If you or someone you know is being forced to engage in any activity and can't leave whether it's commercial sex, housework, farmwork, construction, factory, retail or restaurant work, or some other activity there are numbers to call for help.

National Human Trafficking Resource Center: 1-888-373-7888

California Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking: 1-888-539-2373

Volunteers fanned out across Riverside County Saturday to spread awareness about human trafficking and help businesses comply with a law to help victims.

Though the law has not yet been enforced in Riverside County, since April 2013 California has required certain types of businesses to post notices informing the public and potential victims of human trafficking and slavery about telephone hotlines where they can seek help or report suspicious activity.

I dont think a lot of people are even aware of it, sheriffs Lt. Paul Bennett, who oversees the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, said of the law.

The businesses affected include massage parlors, farm labor contractors, transit stations, sexually oriented businesses, liquor stores, emergency rooms and privately operated job recruitment centers.

North Korean defector admits inaccuracies in his story

Posted: at 8:40 pm

AP Photo/Jason DeCrow North Korean human rights activist Shin Dong-hyuk delivers remarks during an event on human rights in North Korea on Sept. 23 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

TOKYO Shin Dong-hyuk, the North Korean prison camp survivor who has become the symbol of human rights injustices suffered in that country, has changed key parts of the story of his ordeal.

Although the most horrific details, such as being lowered by a hook over a fire, still stand, Shin has admitted that many of the places and timings in his telling of his story were wrong, according to Blaine Harden, the author of Escape from Camp 14, the best-selling book about Shins life.

From a human rights perspective, he was still brutally tortured, but he moved things around, said Harden, a former Washington Post journalist who first wrote Shins story for The Post in 2008.

Shin, 32, has been one of the most prominent defectors from North Korea, trying to raise awareness about human rights abuses there. He also testified in front of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry, whose report has led to an international campaign to hold the totalitarian states leaders to account for decades of human rights violations.

North Korea, alarmed by this campaign and the prospect of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un being indicted, has been trying to undermine Shins testimony and will doubtless seize on these revisions to try to portray all accounts of human rights abuses as fabrications.

In Escape from Camp 14 and in his testimony to the U.N. commission, Shin has told this story: That he was born in Camp 14, a sprawling high-security political prison in the mountains of north of Pyongyang, where he was brutally tortured and lived until his escape in 2005. He has consistently said that he escaped with a fellow inmate, climbing over his body when the man was electrocuted on the fence that surrounded the camp, and then made his way into China.

Shin has now admitted to Harden that when he was about 6, he, his mother and his brother were transferred to another prison camp, Camp 18, across the Taedong River from Camp 14.

It was there, after learning of his mother and brothers plans to escape, he betrayed them to the authorities, Shin told Harden. It was also in this camp, he said, that he witnessed their execution.

In the book, Shin recounted all these events as happening in Camp 14.

Obese woman files complaint with B.C. Human Rights Tribunal over her post-surgery care

Posted: at 8:40 pm

An obese woman has filed a complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal, claiming she was discriminated against because of her weight, and denied a reasonable level of care.

The complainant, a university professor, says a doctor told her that, because of her obesity, there was no point wasting rehabilitation resources on her, and another doctor told her she was just wasting a rehab bed.

In a decision issued Friday, tribunal member Catherine McCreary denied the application to dismiss the complaint, noting certain conclusions could only be reached after a hearing.

The individual doctors involved, the health authority and the complainant are all subject to a publication ban and cannot be identified.

The professor says she suffers from a disability, namely obesity, and the tribunal notes that obesity is a disability which is a protected characteristic in the B.C. Human Rights Code.

The woman said she received differential and discriminatory treatment in her access to rehab, following two hip surgeries, followed by an infection, and the subsequent removal of her prosthetic hip.

The complainant, who was in excess of 440 lbs., said a doctor told her she would be transferred out of rehab and into a seniors home, and that the health authority did not have the resources to deal with someone her size.

The health authority disputes the womans assertion that she was denied a reasonable level of rehab. They noted that both of the complainants hospital stays markedly exceeded the typical length of stay by several weeks, and her 126 days in the rehab unit was the longest length of stay of any orthopaedic patient in the Unit over a six-year period.

The health authority also said the complainant refused to participate in nutrition counselling.

The tribunal member urged the parties to use mediation to settle the matter.
