Eczema Woes More Than Skin Deep

Posted: January 19, 2015 at 2:46 am

A new study finds that eczema, a chronic itchy skin disease that often starts in childhood, wreaks havoc on patients lives.

The study from Northwestern University discovered that adults suffering from eczema have higher rates of smoking, drinking and obesity and are less likely to exercise.

These behaviors give them a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as diabetes, according to the researchers. On top of that, they also have higher rates of insomnia.

About 10 percent of adults in the U.S. have eczema, the researchers reported.

This disease takes a huge emotional toll on its sufferers, like chronic pain, said dermatologist and lead study author Jonathan Silverberg, Ph.D.

Because eczema often starts in early childhood, people are affected all through their developmental years and adolescence. It hurts their self-esteem and identity. Thats part of why we see all these negative behaviors.

Adding to eczema patients health woes is difficulty exercising because sweat and heat aggravate the itching, according to Silverberg, director of the Northwestern Medicine Multidisciplinary Eczema Center.

They will avoid anything that triggers the itch, he said. Patients report their eczema flares during a workout.

This opens our eyes in the world of dermatology that were not just treating chronic inflammation of the skin but the behavioral, lifestyle side of things, Silverberg continued.

Novartis' Cosentyx Approved By EU For First-line Systemic Treatment Of Psoriasis

Posted: at 2:45 am

By RTT News, January 19, 2015, 02:05:00 AM EDT

(RTTNews.com) - Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG ( NVS ) announced that the European Commission or EC has approved Cosentyx (TM) as a first-line systemic treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy.

Cosentyx is the first and only biologic that has been approved in Europe as first-line systemic therapy in the treatment of psoriasis and as an alternative to treatments that have significant side effects. All other biologic treatments for psoriasis, including anti-tumor necrosis factor therapies and Stelara are recommended for second-line systemic therapy in Europe, according to the company.

The company said that the key treatment goal for psoriasis patients is achieving clear skin. In clinical studies, 70% or more Cosentyx 300 mg patients achieved clear skin or PASI 100 or almost clear skin or PASI 90, during the first 16 weeks of treatment and importantly, this was maintained with continued treatment in the majority of patients up to Week 52.

Novartis stated that the EU approval follows the recent results of the Phase IIIb CLEAR study, which showed that Cosentyx was superior to Stelara in clearing skin of patients living with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. The CLEAR study was the second head-to-head study for Cosentyx. Cosentyx also showed superiority to Enbrel in clearing skin in the FIXTURE study.

In addition to the EU, Cosentyx has been approved in Australia for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and in Japan for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and active psoriatic arthritis.

Further, the company said that the US Food and Drug Administration or FDA decision in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis is anticipated early in 2015 following the unanimous recommendation of approval in October 2014 from the Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee or DODAC to the US FDA.

The Train to Crystal City:FDRs Secret Prisoner Exchange Program and Americas Only Family Internment Camp During World War IIbyJan Jarboe Russell Scribner

The name sounds like a fairyland amusement park, but it was quite the opposite. Crystal City, explains journalist Russell, was a WWII family internment camp in Texas for German, Italian and Japanese immigrants. The only US camp of its kind, Crystal City was a center for secret prisoner exchanges. Groups of immigrants and their children were traded for businessmen, diplomats, scientists and soldiers deemed more important by the US. A book that casts a light on a dark chapter in our history.

Larry Wilmore is ready for his Nightly Show closeup

Posted: at 2:45 am

Dealing with contemporary issues and controversies will be a regular feature of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.

Standing on the set of his new series, which debuts 11:30 p.m. Monday on Comedy Central the old Colbert Report timeslot Wilmore tells a group of reporters, If The Daily Show and Politically Incorrect had a kid, it would be this show.

Wilmore is known to Comedy Central viewers from his role on The Daily Show.Photo: Comedy Central

Wilmores brand-new set is in the same spot as The Colbert Report on Manhattans far West Side.

On one side, a desk with several chairs invites panel discussion across from a green screen. On the other, there are shelves decorated with old clocks, cameras and typewriters opposite a wall of clocks with jokey time zones such as Pasadena, Obamas Birth Place and Pompeii among others.

Well done and clever, considering that the numbers on the clocks run counterclockwise.

Tall and distinguished in a dark tailored suit, Wilmore, the former Senior Black Correspondent on The Daily Show and, most recently, an executive producer on ABCs hit comedy Black-ish stands apart from his producers Rory Albanese and Amy Ozols and his head writer Robin Thede to talk about the format of his show.

In addition to his trademark deconstructive point of view, he wants to have a mix of real people and glamour people to talk about the issues of the day.

Like many talk show hosts before him, Wilmore says that The Nightly Show, which was created by Jon Stewart, will focus on issues rather than personalities. And there will likely always be a comedian.

This is my barbershop, Wilmore said. No matter how heated it gets, its still a barbershop. I think we may cover the State of the Union address.
